One of the most outstanding Spanish ocean sailing sailors, the Basque Unai Basurko, has just confirmed his participation in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, the regatta that will start on July 3rd from Baiona to Angra do Heroismo, in the archipelago of the Azores.
The 43-year-old sailor from Biscay, with more than 500 regattas and 150,000 nautical miles traveled, is still, to this day, the only Spaniard who has managed to get on the podium of a solo round-the-world trip with two stopovers, a milestone he achieved in 2007 in the 5 Oceans Regatta. In 2008 he also participated in the transoceanic Vendeé Globe, a non-stop solo round-the-world trip; and the Transat Jacques Vabre is another of the great regattas that swell the list of his long sports record.
Ready to add a new great regatta to his sailing resume, Basurko has just signed up to compete in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race. It will do so aboard a 50-foot Bavaria, from Náutica Cadenote, and with a crew made up of students and enthusiasts, in which it is still possible to embark. He does so because, he says, he wants to “allow them to fulfill their dream of ocean sailing and give them the opportunity to enjoy overcoming difficulties, sailing at night, studying tactics related to meteorology and seamanship and, of course, enjoying of the ocean.”
With 53 days to go before the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race begins, Basurko and his team have already started training, sailing monthly between Getxo and Sada to improve all possible aspects of deep-sea sailing. “We must prepare very well – says Unai-, it is It is important to arrive in good physical condition for the race and leave the problems on the ground to be able to enjoy the competition to the fullest”.
A competition that he will face, he assures, always bearing in mind a series of environmental issues that, for years, he has promoted in his sailing expeditions to places such as Greenland, Newfoundland or Antarctica. “Whoever sees the sea only as a circuit in which to compete, has not understood anything about navigation. On board we will always promote behaviors that are respectful of the marine environment and its inhabitants. The crew will have books on board, to identify birds, mammals, fish…”
It was this need for environmental awareness that led Unai Basurko to create Pakea Bizkaia, a school with which she intends to achieve, through the notoriety of her exploits, greater social recognition for the sport of sailing, as well as to educate and raise awareness among young and not so young in respect for the environment.
And it will be the flag of peace (pakea means peace in Basque) and that philosophy is what marks the navigation of the Portuguese in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race aboard the Pakea Cadenote. “Our main goal ,” he says, It will be learning and enjoyment, but it is clear that we will also try to do almost everything a little better than our competitors”.
The ocean regatta, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Angra Iate Clube, will depart on July 3 from the fishing village of Baiona towards Angra do Heroismo, a town of some 35,000 inhabitants located on the Terceira Island of the Portuguese archipelago. from Azores. It will be there where the awards ceremony for the first stage will be held, just before the start of the second stage back to Galicia, on July 14.
