The J80 Class Winter League of the Monte Real Yacht Club opens this weekend the 2017 regatta season in Baiona. The competition is one of the eleven included this year in the sporting calendar of the Baiona yacht club, along with other historic ones such as the Conde de Gondomar Trophy or the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy.
The Winter League will be held over six days during the months of January, February and March . Exclusively, J80 class sailboats will compete in it, monotypes that Monte Real has been promoting for several years, through the acquisition of new boats by its partners and its inclusion as a class in all the competitions it organizes.
This Saturday, the J80 will be in charge of loosening the moorings of the regatta season with the first stage of tests, starting at three in the afternoon in the bay of Baiona. The participating crews, made up of a maximum of four sailors, with the possibility of including a fifth as an observer , will sail as a fleet and compete in real time.
The regatta committee will establish a windward-leeward course for them, which will depend on the weather conditions and which the crews must complete in several laps, proving their worth in each of the manoeuvres. With a maximum of three tests per day and six stages to complete, the teams will add points for the final classification from which the winner of the league will come out, which will be known at the end of next March.
Among the participating boats are, among others, the winners of the previous edition: the Miudo of the Portuguese Francisca Barros, the Virazón skippered by Miguel Lago and the Luna Nueva of the Oviedo Juan Luis Tuero. Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, winner of the J80 Class Autumn League, will also repeat; and Luis de Mira’s Namasté, who came second in the same competition.
There will be a total of ten boats that will take to the water this Saturday to compete in the J80 Class Winter League. After the inclusion last November of the Cansino of Fernándo Yáñez and Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui in the J80 fleet of Monte Real, in this month of January another boat is added, the Mondo, armed by Bernardo Macedo.

The J80 Class Winter League is the first of the eleven competitions that the Monte Real Club de Yates will organize throughout 2017. After its celebration, the Winter Regatta and the Spring Regatta – Repsol Trophy will arrive in April, leaving May for the youngest, with the Baitra Children’s Sailing Trophy .
The Galician Solo and Two Championship will open in June, a month in which the Social Cruise Regatta and the AXA Trophy – Iberian Championship Class 2.4mR will also be held. In July, Monte Real opens the month with the celebration of the Baitra-MRCYB Social League Final , and closes it with one of its classics, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy .
The other great event for the Baiona club will be in September with the Prince of Asturias Trophy , in which the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards will be awarded again. To close the calendar, a new edition, the third already, of the Solidarity Vertiathlon , and the J80 Class Autumn League .
