40 boats in contention for the Comunica Trophy

 

· The Monte Real Club de Yates organizes a new edition of the competition with the collaboration of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo and the sponsorship of the visual communication company Comunica

40 boats will compete this Saturday in a new edition of the Comunica Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the collaboration of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo and the sponsorship of the visual communication company Comunica.

Among the crews that aspire to take the laurels of the ORC class we will see the Yess Too of the Portuguese Rui Ramada, the Aceites Abril of the Ourenses Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, the Pairo Marnatura skippered by Luis Bugallo, the Magical of Julio Rodríguez or Al Balea Dous by Luis Pérez.

This year, as a novelty, there is also a trophy for the ORC A2 category, for sailboats with a skipper and a single crew member, in which some nautical couples have registered, such as those made up of Jacobo Vecino and Brenda Maure aboard the Salaño Dos ; or Javier Rey and Jorge Justo, in the Q Talent Consultants.

The Luxoconf by Jean Claude Sarrade, the SND Cormorán by Francisco Martínez, the Ifaclinic by Joao Allen, La Galera by Miguel Fernandez and the Pazo de Cea by Iago Carballo are some of the J80s that will compete for victory in this class of one-designs, which it will not be the only one, as there will also be a category for the Figaro Beneteau.

The latter will be sailed by the crews led by Teresa Valladares, aboard the Ladeira; or Javier Bernardez in the Bouvento.

In the absence of the deadline for registration, which will remain open until one hour before the start of the competition, there are already nearly 200 sailors who will leave Vigo this Saturday at two in the afternoon for Baiona for the final victory .

They will have a route of about 15 miles ahead of them with several steps through beacons for which the weather forecast announces winds from the south southwest with an average of 8 knots and peaks of up to 18, which could be even more intense given the probability that record showers at times.

Once the competition is over, the Monte Real Club de Yates will host the awards ceremony for the winners, in which the president of the Baiona club, José Luis Álvarez; the executive director of Comunica, Roberto Lira; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; and the deputy for sports from the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez.

Monte Real opens the heavy sailing season with the Comunica Trophy

 

· After launching the J80 League and celebrating the Spanish Optimist Championship, the heavy sailing regattas arrive at the Monte Real Club de Yates

After launching the J80 Winter League and celebrating the Spanish Optimist Championship, the Monte Real Club de Yates inaugurates this Saturday the heavy sailing season with the Comunica Trophy, the first of the six regattas for cruisers that the club from Baiona has scheduled for this 2021.

A coastal route between Vigo and Baiona will be the route that the participating sailboats (which will be able to compete in ORC, ORC Open, ORC Double Handed, J80 or Fígaro) must complete to win the final victory, which will be resolved in a single day.

Although it will be the weather that dictates the final route, the intention of the regatta committee is to make the fastest boats pass by a mark while the rest sail directly, with the aim that everyone can reach the finish more or less at the same time.

The arrival point will be located in the vicinity of the Baiona dock and once the race is over, it will be the Monte Real Yacht Club itself that will host the award ceremony for the winners, at seven in the afternoon.

As a novelty this year, one of the categories in contention will be the ORC Double Handed, in which the sailboats will be manned by only two people. This is a change accepted by the organizing club after receiving requests from some owners who want to be able to participate in more regattas within this modality to prepare for the Galician A2 Championship to be held in June.

One of the sailboats that will participate in this category will be the Salaño Dos of Jacobo Vecino and Brenda Maure, which will face, among others, the Q Talento Consultores of Javier Rey and Jorge Justo; to Lacazán by Mariano Benavente and Genoveva Pereiro; or the Alalunga by Rodrigo Rodríguez and Carlos Cárdenas.

In ORC there will be three of the regulars of the great regattas in Galicia: the Yess Racing of the Portuguese Rui Ramada, the Aceites Abril of the Pérez Canal brothers and the Pairo skippered by Luis Bugallo. And for the J80 competition, Jean Claude Sarrade’s Luxoconf, Francisco Martínez’s SND Cormorán, Joao Allen’s Ifaclinic, Miguel Fernandez’s La Galera, Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva and the Pazo de Cea by Iago Carballo.

In the last edition of the competition, held in 2019 (in 2020 there was no due to COVID19 restrictions), the Nahela of Club Deportivo Alagua, skippered by Victor Manuel Álvarez, won. He won the general classification and also took the victory in the ORC 1 class. In ORC 2 the winner was the Abal Abogados of Mariano Dios (Ro Yacht Club), and in monotypes the Cansino of Fernando Yáñez and the Ladeira of Genoveva Pereiro prevailed. The fastest boat to complete the course (11.9 miles in just 2 hours and 7 minutes) was the Swan 45 Yess Too of the Portuguese Rui Ramada.

This new edition of the Comunica Trophy is once again sponsored, for yet another year, and there are now five (four cruise editions and one monotype exclusive), by Comunica Comunicación Visual, a firm that offers printing services, labels, industrial design and articles acrylics to all of Galicia from the municipality of A Guarda, where its main headquarters are located. For months now, under the signature of AEProtec, they have also been manufacturing masks, screens and other products related to protection against COVID19.

1. ORGANIZATION

The REPSOL Trophy will be organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates (MRCYB) with the sponsorship of REPSOL.

2. PLACE AND DATES

It will be held in the waters of the Vigo estuary and the Bay of Baiona on May 1 and 2, 2021.

3. RULES

3.1 According to the provisions in force in the following regulations:

3.2 The infraction of the Rules in AR and IR of this event indicated as[NP] , it will not be a reason for protests between ships. This modifies Rule 60.1(a) RRS.

3.2 Measures in relation to COVID-19.

3.2.1 Access to the facilities will not be allowed for those people whose body temperature exceeds 37.5 degrees or those who refuse to pass the temperature control. This decision does not constitute a reason to request a remedy (this modifies RRS 62.1(a)).

3.2.2[SP] Failure to comply with the “Security Protocol in relation to COVID-19” will lead, after a hearing, to the imposition of penalties at the discretion of the Protest Committee” with a minimum of two places in the test or tests to be determined.

3.3 The infraction of the Rules in AR and IR of this event indicated as[DP] , indicates that your penalty may be lighter than disqualification if the Protest Committee so decides. The abbreviation for the discretionary penalty imposed pursuant to this instruction shall be[DPI] .

3.4 The penalty for infractions of the IR indicated as[SP] they will be fixed, without a hearing and imposed by the Regatta Committee in each test infringed during the day (modifies Rules 63.1 and A5 of the RRS).

4. PARTICIPANTS

4.1 Participation in this regatta is limited to boats with an ORC International, ORC, OPEN or ORC A2 or Club certificate valid for 2021, as well as the J80 and Figaro monotypes.
4.2 Participants must comply with the eligibility rules of the WS

4.3 Groups and Classes.

An ORC group is established that will be divided into classes, as well as those of the different monotypes:

Cruise (*) – ORC
Cruise (**) – ORC OPEN
J80 class – J80 monotypes
Figaro class (***) – Figaro Monotypes
A2 (****) – A2

(*) In ORC, in view of the registrations made and as soon as their effective participation in the regatta is verified, the Regatta Committee and Organizing Committee will establish the classes and cuts of the same, seeking the greatest possible equity, not admitting claims about it.

(**) In the Special Open Class, only boats that do not enter the classes indicated in (*) will be admitted. This class will have to fill out a registration form with specifications of material on board.
In any case, the Regatta Committee and the Organizing Committee of the regatta will have the power to include, at their discretion, in the Open Class the boats they deem appropriate, not admitting claims in this regard.

(***) The Figaros will run in real time and only in their class.

(****) In class A2 they will race under the Double Handed rating (those boats with an ORC certificate may request it free of charge from the RFEV).

4.4 One designs will only compete in their class and in real time.

To form a class, there must be a minimum of 6 registered.

5. ELIGIBILITY

5.1 Participants must comply with the eligibility conditions reflected in Regulation 19 of the World Sailing and the prescriptions of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation related to said regulation.

5.2 Participants of nationality or legal residence in Spain must be in possession of the athlete’s federation license for 2021.

6. ADVERTISING [NP] [DP]

6.1 Participants may display advertising, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20 of World Sailing and the Advertising and Competition Regulations of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation.

6.2 In accordance with World Sailing Regulation 20, participants may be required to display advertising on the forward 20% of the hull, on each side of the boat and on the sides of the boom, as well as possible advertising pennants on the backstay of each boat. All this would be provided at the MRCYB race office once your registration is confirmed.

6.3 Modifications to the stickers provided by the organizing committee are not allowed. Violation of this IR will entail a penalty of 2 places in the test.

6.4 The Monte Real Club de Yates reserves the right to demand the elimination or substitution of any type of publicity, message or image displayed during the celebration of the event of the boats or the equipment of their crew members, which does not comply with the moral and ethical standards of general acceptance (Regulation 20 of the World Sailing) or contravene the interests of the organizing club. This includes holding races on the regatta course, at the club’s facilities or while at the regatta committee’s disposal.

6.5 The owner or skipper of the boat with advertising will be asked to indicate or show the type of advertising that will be displayed during the celebration of the regatta, for the approval of the organizing committee.

6.6 The participating owners and crews grant their authorization to the MRCYB so that any photograph, image or video of people or boats taken during the days of the regatta may be published in any medium, such as television advertisements, editorial comments, information , advertising, etc.

7. INSCRIPTIONS AND BONUSES

7.1 Entries will necessarily be formalized on the official form (it accompanies this document and/or is available at www.mrcyb.es).

7.2 The registration fees will be the following:

7.3 The registration rights must be made effective, in the name of the Monte Real Yacht Club, by means of a transfer or payment made in the current account that is set out below (indicating the name of the boat):

7.4 To be accepted, an application for registration must be submitted or submitted with the following documentation:

• Registration form duly completed and signed.
• Proof of payment, as specified in 7.2.
• For foreign athletes who do not have a federative license or athlete’s medical insurance that insures them in the event of an accident, they must prove that they have insurance against accidents and illness valid in Spain.
• Valid and signed ORC measurement certificate (ORC fleet only).
• Photocopy of civil liability insurance and damage to third parties for a minimum coverage of €336,556 and coverage for all crew members on board and policy extension for participation in non-professional regattas.
• List of security elements (depending on whether ORC or Monotype) duly covered and signed.

7.5 The application for registration must have the approval of the Organizing Committee of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

7.7 Registration period.
The registration period will end on April 27, 2021. The Organizing Committee reserves the right to extend said period. If registrations are accepted after the deadline, the cost of these will be increased by 20%.

7.8 Registration of Participants
Each owner or skipper must register and personally sign the registration form at the MRCYB Regatta Office before 11:00 a.m. on May 1, 2021.

7.9 Admission of Participants
The registration of a boat will not be accepted if, before the time indicated in section 7.8, it does not present the documents specified in 7.4 at the Regatta Office or does not have the approval of the Organizing Committee.

8. PROGRAM

8.1 The program of the event is as follows:

Friday, April 30

12:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. – Presentation of documentation and delivery of Sailing Instructions.

Saturday, May 1

10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. – Presentation of documentation and delivery of Sailing Instructions.

1:00 p.m. – Coastal tour for all classes (departure from Baiona cove).

7:30 p.m. – Tasting, if the COVID restrictions on the date allow it.

Sunday, May 2

12:00 hours – Coastal Tour.

6:30 p.m. – Award ceremony.

8.2 On Sunday, May 2, no attention signal will be given later than 3:30 p.m. GPS time.

8.3 Two coastal tests are scheduled (one on Saturday and the other on Sunday), which may be modified at the discretion of the organizing committee.

8.4 The Sailing Instructions may introduce variations in the routes or in the scheduled program, depending on the circumstances that occur, mainly weather.

9. INSPECTION AND MEASUREMENTS [DP]

Measurements and daily checks of certificates and safety may be carried out by the measurement committee on regatta days.

10. SCORE

10.1 The Low Score System Appendix A4 of the RRS will apply.

10.2 There will be no discards.

11. COMPENSATION SYSTEM AND RANKINGS

11.1 ORC rankings will be established according to one of the following compensation systems:
For cruising, compound course, and if not possible, coastal regatta will apply.

All this always at the discretion of the regatta official, not admitting claims in this regard.

11.2 Class classifications will be established (provided that the provisions of points 4.2. and 4.3 are met).

11.3 The one design classes (J80 and Figaro) will only qualify in real time.

12. SECURITY [NP] [DP]

12.1 The safety of the regatta is considered as Category 4, in accordance with the Special Rules of Regatta of the World Sailing (for one designs they will be specific to them).

12.2 The participants undertake to carry on board, under their responsibility, the updated regulatory documentation of the vessel, as well as the appropriate qualification for the management of the vessel and the navigation to be carried out.

13. PRIZES

The list of prizes will be exposed in the TOA, in view of the participants and registered, before the start of the 1st test.

14. BERTHS

The boats formally registered in this regatta and that do not belong to the MRCYB fleet, will have a reserved mooring or anchoring place (mooring under the exclusive responsibility of the owner or skipper), free of charge at the MRCYB, from April 25 to May 8.

15. COMMUNICATIONS [NP] [DP]

15.1 The Race Committee will use Channel 72 VHF for its communications during the celebration of the tests.

15.2 All participating boats must have an operational VHF radio receiver installed on board, equipped with at least VHF channels 09 (156.450Mhz), 16 (156.800Mhz) and 72 (156.610Mhz).

16. OFFICIAL SOCIAL ACTS

16.1 The award ceremony will take place on the terrace of the MRCYB, once the general classifications of the tests have been published on May 5, 2021 (approximately 4:30 p.m.).

16.2 Scheduled social events:

17. LIABILITY

17.1 All boats participating in the regatta do so at their own risk and responsibility.

17.2 The Monte Real Club de Yates, the organizing authority or any other person or body involved in the organization of the event, rejects any responsibility for loss, damage, injury or inconvenience that may occur to people or things, both on land and at sea, as a result of participating in the tests covered by this Notice of Race.

17.3 Attention is drawn to Fundamental Rule 4 DECISION TO RACE in part 1 of the RRS which states:

“It is the sole responsibility of a ship to decide whether to participate in a
test or if it continues in regatta”

The Okofen maintains its dominance over the J80

 

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen reaffirmed this Saturday in Baiona its leadership in the Baitra J80 Winter League organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates

· The sailboat signed a first and a second place in the quarters of the third day and after discarding its worst result it separates from its direct rivals

· El Alboroto and El Marías will arrive in second and third position on the fourth and penultimate day that will be held on May 15

 

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen maintains its dominance over the J80 that compete in the Baitra Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates. The sailboat led by the ocean navigator not only reaffirmed its leadership in the competition this Saturday, but also managed to further separate itself from its rivals in the ranking.

With a first and a second place in the partials of the third day held this Saturday in the bay of Baiona, and after ruling out his worst result, the Okofen is 4 points behind its most direct competitor, the Uproar by Juan Carlos Ameneiro who is second with 12 points. Marías de Manel Marías closes the provisional podium with 17 points.

Okofen achieved this new victory on a complicated day due to the wind, which had a hard time picking up intensity. The first test that was started, with a slightly shorter route than usual so as not to risk too much, had to be canceled because the wind, which had started from the east with little force, fell completely, leaving the measurements to zero .

Turned into an oil pond, the stage was announced as very complicated to hold a race, but the regatta committee did not give up and kept the sailboats in the water for some time hoping to give them at least one more start.

Finally he succeeded with a north wind of about 6 knots on average, with which the fleet was able to play up to two tests, the fifth and sixth so far in the competition. In both, the sailboats made the usual course, a windward leeward double turn; and with the last one, which the committee decided to cut to ensure their final, they were able to eliminate their worst result so far, something that made the classification dance.

There were some notable jumps, both up and down. The Cansino de Fernando Yáñez, a regular on the provisional podium, lost the third position he had brought from the previous day and fell to fourth; and La Galera, by Miguel Fernández, from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña, signed the most spectacular climb, from tenth to fifth position, something he achieved thanks to his good performance this Saturday, with a first and fourth place in the partial .

The next day, fourth and penultimate of the Baitra J80 Winter League organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates will be held on May 15.

The Baitra J80 Winter League crosses its equator with Okofen and Marías in the lead

The Baitra J80 Winter League crosses its halfway mark this Saturday with the celebration of the third of the five scheduled days in the competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales.

The Okofen of Javier de la Gándara from Vigo and the Marías of the Portuguese Manel Marías are the sailboats that are in the lead, in first and second position respectively, separated by just three points. This tight difference and the proximity of the crews that are in third and fourth place -Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino and Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto-, will undoubtedly give excitement to tomorrow’s regatta day.

Baiona crowns the new Spanish Optimist champions

 

In the SUB 16 category, the winners were Fernando Benítez from the Canary Islands in the men’s section and Marisa Alexandra Vicens from the Balearic Islands in the women’s section.

· Ignacio Martín (RCN Palma) and Blanca Ferrando (RCN Valencia) were the best male and female sailors in the SUB 13 category

The fishing village of Baiona, in Galicia, crowned the new champions of the Optimist class this Saturday after the celebration of the 2021 Spanish Championship – Cenor Trophy, which the Monte Real Club de Yates organized during Holy Week by delegation of the Royal Federation Española de Vela and with the sponsorship of Grupo Cenor.

The new champions of children’s sailing in Spain are the canary Fernando Benitez , from the 4 Winds Regatta Club (Las Palmas); and the Balearic Marisa Alexandra Vicens ( Club Nautic s’Arenal) in the SUB 16 category; and Ignacio Martin (RCN Palma) and Blanca Ferrando (RCN Valencia) in the SUB 13 category.

The four won the laurels of the competition after having completed, with the best results, the 5 tests held in the only two days -of the four scheduled- in which they could compete. The wind, very capricious throughout the championship, left the first and third stages blank, and the sailors were only able to score points on the second and last day of regattas.

They did, yes, showing great potential in the water despite the complications of the weather and despite not having been able to sail, train or compete as usual in a very troubled season due to the COVID19 restrictions.

Cenor’s marketing director, Leticia Fernandez, was in charge of presenting the U16 Spanish champion plaque to Fernando Benitez , from Las Palmas. The Canarian managed to beat Tim Lubat (RCN Palma) and Roberto Aguilar (CNM Benalmádena), who had to settle for silver and bronze in the category.

The president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez, did the same with the U16 women’s section, which had its best sailor in Marisa Alexandra Vicens (CN s’Arenal). The Balearic athlete was crowned the new champion of Spain after beating her clubmate Nicola Jane Sadler and the Andalusian María Castillo (CDN Punta Umbría).

The title of new champion of Spain SUB 13 of Optimist is held, from this Saturday, by the Mallorcan from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, Ignacio Martín . The sailors Rodrigo Luis Pérez (CDN Punta Umbría) and Fernando Echávarri (RCM Santander) stayed close to the great final victory. The Andalusian and the Cantabrian occupy the second and third position respectively.

Among the females, the best in the SUB 13 competition was the Valencian Blanca Ferrando , from the Real Club Náutico de Valencia. The second and third place for women’s SUB 13 went to Gabriela Morell from the Balearic Islands (RCN Palma) and Carla Lorenzo from the Canary Islands (RCN Tenerife).

In addition to revealing the names of the new Spanish Optimist champions, the championship held these days in Baiona revealed which are the best autonomous communities through a classification derived from the results of the top sailors in the ranking of each territorial federation.

The winner of this championship by autonomies was, without a doubt, the Balearic community , which obtained the best results in the competition and convincingly demonstrated that it had a fantastic pool of sailors in its ranks. Andalusia and the Canary Islands were, with quite a difference in points, in second and third position.

The territorial federations received their awards from the Mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez. The deputy for tourism of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Ana Laura Iglesias, and the president of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation, Manuel Villaverde, also participated in the cast.

With the closing of the Optimist national, Monte Real puts an end to one of its star events in the children’s sailing season and, while it continues with its J80 one-design league, it is already preparing to open the heavy sailing season, which Its first milestones are the celebration of the Comunica Trophy, on the 24th; and the Repsol Trophy, the first weekend of May.

As for the Optimists, their sights are already set on the Spanish Cup to be held in Hondarribia (Basque Country) at the end of April. The two major international events of the year will follow: the European Championship in June and the World Cup in July, in which a selection of the best sailors from national competitions will participate.

The wind steals the spotlight from the Optimists in the Spanish Championship

 

· The third day of the Spanish Optimist Championship – Cenor Trophy that was going to be held this Friday in Baiona was canceled due to lack of wind

The third day of the Spanish Optimist Championship – Cenor Trophy, in which three new tests of the dinghy sailing competition were to be held, ended up being canceled this Friday in Baiona (Galicia) due to lack of wind.

The 150 sailors participating in the competition did not even get out on the water. They remained on land for hours pending in case a breeze came in and they could go sailing, but the conditions never became ideal.

Members of the regatta committee and the beacons did go out to sea to study, from the early hours of the morning, both the interior and the entrance channel to the Bay of Baiona, but the wind did not manage to reach the intensity in any of those areas. necessary. At some point up to 7 knots were recorded, which was the maximum of the day, but neither direction boards were maintained nor did they last over time.

Finally, after verifying that it would be impossible to contest any sleeve, the organization decided to cancel the stage and summon the participants to the final day this Saturday, the last of the championship, with a scheduled start time for eleven in the morning.

After the protests registered after the first tests there were some changes in the initial classification, but the protagonists of the ranking continue to be, with force, the sailors of the Balearic federation, followed by the Valencian, Canarian and Andalusian territorial ones.

In the U16 male category, Tim Lubat (RCN Palma) is in the lead, followed by Xavier García (RCN Palma) and Miguel Padrón (RCN Gran Canaria). Marisa Alexandra Vicens (CN s’Arenal), and Susana Bestard (RCN Palma) and Nicola Jane Sadler (CN s’Arenal) are second and third in the women’s SUB 16 category.

In SUB 13, the best classified in the men’s section are Ignacio Martín (RCN Palma), Rodrigo Luis González Pérez (CND Punta Umbría) and Nikko Palou (RCN Palma). Blanca Ferrando (RCN Valencia), Gabriela Morell (RCN Palma) and Laia Matos (CMSAP) hold the provisional gold, silver and bronze in the women’s SUB 13 category.

Tomorrow, Saturday, in addition to the last tests -if the wind allows it-, the awards ceremony will be held for the new Optimist champions of Spain, at six in the afternoon at the facilities of the Monte Real Club de Yates, organizing club.

The Balearic Islands rules in the national Optimist

 

· Marisa Alexandra Vicens and Ignacio Martín from the Balearic territorial federation were placed this Thursday at the head of the SUB 16 and SUB 13 categories of the Spanish Optimist Championship – Cenor Trophy

· The SUB 16 Marisa Alexandra Vicens (CN s’Arenal) and the SUB 13 Blanca Ferrando (RCN Valencia) were the best female sailors of the day

The Spanish Optimist Championship – Cenor Trophy has already named its first leaders. Marisa Alexandra Vicens and Ignacio Martín, both from the Balearic territorial federation, were placed this Thursday at the top of the classification of the children’s sailing national held in the Galician town of Baiona under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

With two first places and one second, and after discarding her worst result (a 26), Marisa Alexandra Vicens, from Club Nautic s’Arenal, was the best athlete in the regatta. It is placed at the top of the general classification and also leads the group of the female SUB 16. In this category, they are followed, in second and third position, by Susana Bestard (RCN Palma) and Nicola Jane Sadler (CN s’Arenal) from Mallorca.

Among the U16 boys, the best of the day was Tim Lubat (RCN Palma). He overtook his club mate Xabier García, who is second; and the Canarian Miguel Padrón (RCN Gran Canaria) who closes the provisional podium of the category.

In the SUB 13 competition, Ignacio Martín (RCN Palma) and Blanca Ferrando (RCN Valencia) lead the classification, in the male and female categories. The Andalusian Rodrigo Luis González Pérez (CDN Punta Umbría) and the Balearic Nikko Palou (RCN Palma) were left on the verge of first place, second and third respectively among the boys; and Candela Escobedo (RCM Santander) and Gabriela Morell (RCN Palma) hold the provisional silver and bronze for the girls.

This second day of the Spanish Optimist Championship – Cenor Trophy was the first scoring of the competition after the blank day lived this Wednesday due to lack of wind. Three tests were planned in the stage program, but the regatta committee, seeing the good weather conditions and the not very optimistic reports for the remaining days of competition, decided to do a fourth.

They were all held with very good wind, always above ten knots, with an average of thirteen and gusts of up to sixteen. The starts were clean, with hardly any out of line, and it was only necessary to make a general call to the sailors of the blue group. The aspiring champions of Spain sailed on a trapezoid-shaped field, which they left on the outside completing a lap, passing through a gate and adding a second upwind leg to the finish.

The regatta area was located in Carallones, at the entrance to the Bay of Baiona, one of the most spectacular places in the Rías Baixas due to the views it offers of the Estelas Islands, the Cíes Islands of the Atlantic Islands National Park, the Parador Nacional de Baiona and the Virgen de la Roca, one of the most visited monuments in the Galician fishing village.

The wind did its thing this Wednesday in Baiona (Galicia) and left blank the opening day of the Spanish Optimist Championship – Cenor Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates by delegation of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation.

The regatta committee, with Cristofol Morales at the helm, maintained until the end the hopes of being able to start at least one test with which to open the classification, but the wind did not pick up nor did it pick up enough intensity to celebrate the regatta. Winds were recorded from all four quadrants and, when it seemed that the situation was going to stabilize, half a regatta field was laid, but the attempt was ultimately frustrated.

The opening of a championship that still has three more days on the program was thus watered down and the sights are already set on the weather forecasts for this Thursday, which are announced to be somewhat better. Quite a bit of cloudiness is expected and there is a high probability of rain, even heavy showers, but the wind will blow more intensely, which will make it easier for the Optimists to navigate. If the forecast holds true, it will blow from the southeast in the morning and from the southwest in the afternoon, with between 5 and 8 knots on average and gusts of up to 16.

The start time of the tests is set for eleven in the morning but the clock will be, as always, subject to what happens with the wind. In the water will be the 150 sailors from Andalusia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, the Valencian Community, Catalonia, Murcia, the Basque Country, Cantabria, Madrid and also the Galicians, who act as hosts.

Galicia receives, starting tomorrow, Wednesday, the best sailors of the Optimist class in Spain in the national class championship, which the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona organizes in 2021 by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and thanks to the sponsorship of the Cenor Group.

More than a hundred young sailors from 10 autonomous communities aspire to win the title of champion in the SUB 16 and SUB 13 categories throughout the four days that the competition will last, which will take place in the Galician Rías Baixas.

After two days of registration, control of materials and measurements, the first regatera day will be held tomorrow, a stage that will begin, if the wind allows it, at eleven in the morning. The weather forecast announces an easterly wind in the early hours and the possibility that it will roll to the southeast as the day progresses, which will be very covered, although no rain is expected. The intensity, between 7 and 10 knots with peaks or gusts of up to 17, should not make navigation difficult for sailors.

The 12 scheduled tests, divided into three per day, will be held in a regatta field located, predictably, inside the Bay of Baiona. It will be a trapezoidal route with beacons that will mark the pace of the sailors until the final arrival, located inside the ring. Its duration will be approximately 45 minutes.

The Optimists will be divided each day into two different groups -blue and yellow- with the aim that they can compete against each other. They will navigate a qualifying series of 9 tests during the first three days of competition; and a final series, of 3 sleeves, the last day of the championship. With the celebration of 2 tests, the championship will already be valid; and on the fourth round completed, sailors will be given the chance to discard their worst result.

Leading the regatta committee will be Cristofol Morales and the sports director of Monte Real, Roy Alonso, will be the safety coordinator. In total, more than thirty people including committees, beacons, sailors, juries, measurers, office staff, security and the press will be in charge of the entire championship operation.

The competition will start this year without the classic opening ceremony, an act in which all the participants used to parade carrying the flag of their autonomous community. COVID19 has forced the organization to implement numerous prevention measures to avoid possible contagion and this ritual has been suspended.

Other actions stipulated in the coronavirus control protocol are taking the temperature of the participants, the separation of spaces by autonomies, the maintenance of safety distances or the obligation to always wear a mask on land (in the water, since sail alone, they will be able to take it off).

Among the participants of this Spanish Optimist Championship 2021, a total of 150 sailors from 10 communities: Galicia (22 sailors), Andalusia (20), the Balearic Islands (20), the Canary Islands (20), the Valencian Community (20), Catalonia ( 19), Murcia (11), Basque Country (6), Cantabria (6) and Madrid (4).

In addition to the titles of champions SUB 16 and SUB13, the competition also puts in contention the Championship by Autonomies, which will reward the territorial federations that obtain the best results. In this contest, the first classified of each autonomy and category (SUB 16 and SUB 13) will score and the final general classification will come from the sum of the positions of those sailors.

Okofen snatches the lead from Marías

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen gave no respite this Saturday in Baiona and in addition to achieving the best results on the second day of the Baitra J80 Winter League, managed to take the lead from Manel Marías’ Marías, who was in the lead after the stage inaugural.

Just the opposite happened to Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino. It started strong, with a second place, but it lost steam as the regatta day progressed; and the fourth and eighth places that he signed in the rest of the races did not allow him to climb positions beyond the third place that he had dragged from the first stage.

In fourth position is Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, in which this Saturday the presence of the Spanish J80 champion, Javier Aguado, was noted. His good work helped the crew climb positions from 12th to 4th place. It was, without a doubt, the climb of the day, for one of the sailboats with the best results (one first, one second and one fourth in the tests held).

The Baitra J80 Winter League organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales will return to the bay of Baiona on April 10 with three new tests that will take the monotypes into the halfway point of the competition.

Ribeira shines on the opening day of the Optimist Cenor Regatta

This Saturday, Ribeira led two of his athletes towards victory in the Cenor Regatta, the Galician optimist qualifier that is being held this weekend in Baiona under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates, after placing them at the top of the classification provisional.

In the U-16 category, the winner of the day, with two fifths and one sixth place in the partials, was Jorge Álvarez, from the Ribeira Sports Yacht Club. He managed to beat Javier García, from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña; and Miguel Rodríguez, from the Canido Maritime Club; who were, tied on points, in second and third position respectively.

The sailor Bruno Iglesias, also from the Ribeira Sports Yacht Club, was the undisputed leader of the regatta day among the U-13s, after signing two first places and one second in the three races held. The athlete was one of the brightest in the opening stage of the competition and will reach the final in a very comfortable position, 25 points behind his closest rival, Jaime Díaz, from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña. The provisional silver and bronze medals for the Sub-13s are held by Jaime Díaz, from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña; and Aitana Pérez, from the Monte Real Yacht Club.

In the competition for sailors from the blue group, those who are just starting out, the best classified after the first tests were Diego Lago, from the Oza Maritime Club, in the men’s category; and Lidia Radio, from the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, in the women’s category.

The start of the competition was marked by a westerly wind that remained quite stable, shifting just a few degrees and allowing the initially designed regatta course to remain practically intact until the end, with just a few minor corrections. It also blew intensely, always above 8 knots, with an average of 13-14 and with peaks of up to 17, so the heats developed quickly.

The regatta committee, with Carlos Villar at the helm, was able to start the three tests planned in the sports program and the competition premiered some markers that will be complete tomorrow, Sunday, on the second and last day, which will be held from the morning.

In the afternoon, the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club will host the delivery of trophies to the winners, in which Cenor’s marketing director, Leticia Fernández; the president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; the territorial delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Vigo, Marta Fernández; the deputy for sports from the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez; and the president of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation, Manuel Villaverde.

Baiona raises the curtain on the Cenor Regatta with sailing, games and theater

 

· More than 100 boys and girls from Galicia will participate starting tomorrow in the last Optimist qualifier prior to the national championship of the class

Baiona raises the curtain on the Cenor Regatta tomorrow, Saturday, with a sailing and games program for the more than 100 young sailors who, coming from different parts of Galicia, will participate in the last Optimist qualifying round prior to the national class championship, a competition sponsored by the home appliances and technology group Cenor.

In addition to the usual sports events, which will start at half past one in the afternoon, the novelty of this competition will be a special entertainment program that the Baiona council has prepared, hand in hand with the Casa de la Navegación Museum and the Baiona Theater Classroom, so that children can have fun discovering Baiona.

It is a dramatized track race that will take the little ones through the main tourist attractions of the fishing village. A tour that, with the aim of solving a riddle, will allow you to discover the ins and outs of discovery, to figures as prominent as Diego Carmona, Vasco Gallego, Isabel la Católica or Pinzón; and places like the Church of Santa María, the Monolito de la Arribada, the nuns’ fountain or the Pinta caravel, among others.

To avoid crowds and be able to maintain COVID safety distances, the game will start at six in the afternoon, taking advantage of the forced closure of the hotel industry. It will start from the music box in Parque de la Palma, where an actress, symbolizing Baiona, will give the little ones the first clues to start playing.

Divided into teams, the children will have to solve different riddles that will take them through some of the most outstanding points of the fishing village, where there will be actors representing some of the most important characters in the history of Baiona. They will be the ones who, explaining different historical episodes, will give the participants the following clues to continue with the tour. The winning team will win an optimist candle courtesy of the company Filtros Navales Jesús Betanzos.

“It is the perfect combination of sport, tourism and fun” says the sports director of the Baiona city council, Javier F. López, who thanks the members of the Casa de la Navegación Museum and the Baiona Theater Classroom for having made possible. “For just over an hour, children will be able to discover the history and wonders of Baiona while having fun following clues and solving riddles” – he continues – “And this will only be the appetizer of what we will prepare at Easter for the Spanish Optimist Championship”.

The dramatized track race will start once the sports program in the water has finished, which includes holding up to three tests if the weather permits. In them, more than 100 young sailors from the yacht clubs of Vigo, Coruña, Canido, Ribeira, Rodeira, Aguete, Oza, Sanxenxo, Panxón, Ferrol and Baiona will fight for the best results in order to move up in the Galician ranking. The first 20 athletes from that regional list will be automatically selected to represent Galicia in the Spanish Optimist Championship.

Baiona warms up engines for the Spanish Optimist Championship with the Cenor Regatta

The fishing village of Baiona warms up for the Spanish Optimist Championship that it will host at Easter with the celebration, this weekend, of the Cenor Regatta, a regional qualifying class prior to the national one. It will be a competition in which more than 100 boys and girls between 9 and 15 years old will haggle, coming from up to 11 clubs from different parts of Galicia.

The Real Club Náutico de Vigo, with 26 children, will be the club with the greatest representation in the water, followed by the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña with 22 sailors competing and the Club Marítimo de Canido with 18. Athletes from Sanxenxo, Rodeira, Aguete, Panxón, Ribeira, Oza and Ferrol will also compete in this qualifying round. For the Monte Real Club de Yates, organizer of the competition, 6 sailors will participate, among which Pablo Marquina stands out, the athlete from Monte Real who has achieved the best results so far in the Galician ranking.

In the sports program of the event, six tests are planned, with a maximum of three per day, being necessary to complete a single sleeve so that the classification can be considered valid.

The competition will begin on Saturday at half past one in the afternoon, once the regatta office procedures and the meeting of coaches and team leaders have been completed; and on Sunday, starting at ten o’clock, the last rounds will be played.

The little ones will sail in a fleet, they will score in real time, they will have the possibility of discarding their worst mark from the fourth race and their results will be added to the ranking of the regional Optimist class, from which the 20 chosen to represent Galicia in the Spanish Championship held in Baiona at Easter.

With the aim of complying with all COVID19 protocols and applying the maximum control and prevention of contagion during the competition, there will be no more social events than the delivery of trophies to the winners, which will be held on Sunday at six in the afternoon.

Likewise, measures such as taking the temperature prior to access to Monte Real, exhaustive hand washing, maintaining an interpersonal distance of one and a half meters, the obligation to always carry hydroalcoholic gel and to navigate at all times will be mandatory. with mask. In addition, the coaches’ meetings will be held outdoors and participants will be able to consult the classifications, images and other materials of the regatta by scanning QR codes distributed throughout the club with their mobile phones.

“Monte Real is more alive than ever”

After learning of the announcement of the suspension of the prestigious sailing SUPER SERIES in Baiona due to COVID19, we reviewed with the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez, the impact that the pandemic has had on one of the clubs with the most History of Spain.

While many other yacht clubs saw how COVID made them lose members, reduce income, forced them to suspend regattas and the activity of their schools, the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona not only managed to stay afloat, but also signed one of its best years, with record numbers of influx of members and students in its Sailing School.

About a year after the declaration of the state of alarm derived from the coronavirus, the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona, José Luis Álvarez, takes stock of what these last months of confinement and restrictions have meant for the club; and of the actions that have allowed them to be an exception in a bleak panorama.

The organization of the SUPER SERIES has just announced the suspension of the Baiona Sailing Week, which next June was going to bring these “formula 1 of the sea” to Galicia. It will have been a very hard blow for the club…

It has been, without a doubt, quite a hit, since we were very excited about the arrival of the SUPER SERIES in Galicia, but we perfectly understand the decision of the organization and we are glad that they have us for 2022. Right now the situation derived from COVID19 did not give them the security they needed and they have preferred to minimize the risks by reducing the trips and suspending the closest regattas in time. From the club, the only thing we hope is that next year the situation will be much better and we can see these outstanding players in Galicia, in a year that will also continue to be Xacobeo, so it will undoubtedly be a good year to receive them as they deserve .

The truth is that the COVID19 crisis has generated numerous losses in the economic activity of many sectors (the nautical sector has not been an exception) and it is still not very well known what the impact will be in the short and medium term. How has this situation affected the Monte Real Club de Yates?

At Monte Real we are lucky that the vast majority of places are occupied by club members, so we manage to keep the pontoons full throughout the year. But we have noticed a huge drop in the number of transits, due to mobility restrictions. The drop in figures has been tremendous, but of course, they could not cross borders. There has been an impact, without a doubt, but much less than what other clubs have possibly suffered, which have also had many membership losses.

In Monte Real they have not suffered those casualties?

The truth is that no. Every year there are some, for different reasons, but the few casualties that have occurred in these months of pandemic have been covered by the entry of new members and we continue with the same number as before. What’s more, there are still people on the waiting list to join the club, because not all applications are accepted. We want to maintain a stable number, around 700 members, which guarantees the comfort of the facilities, and that is why we do not grow exponentially, not because there is no demand, there is.

How has the club member experienced these months of restrictions and prohibitions?

The truth is that the club has been more alive than ever. In the moments in which they have left us, yes. In the months of the strictest restrictions we had to cancel social events, close the restaurant, paralyze the regattas and the school… but when they allowed us to open in the summer, albeit with restrictions, we had an influx of members, students and sailors that we had not seen in years. .

What do you think was due to this unexpected influx of people during the summer?

At first it caught us a bit by surprise, because we weren’t expecting it, but then we understood what was happening: the club had become a safe place where we could spend some leisure time without worrying about the coronavirus. The partners understood all the control measures put in place, some of which were not even required by the authorities, and they felt comfortable and safe with them.

What other older measures did you put in place to avoid COVID?

We always try to go one step further than what the authorities ask of us. All the requirements of closures, capacity, cleaning, control… and we also bought ozone machines and thermometers to control the temperature at the entrances, distributed masks, and even hired external personnel to guarantee that everyone complied with the regulations. They were months of a lot of control and restrictions that made everything a little more uncomfortable and generated some complaints, but at the same time, they created a bubble, a security environment in the club that was not there outside. And that was the reason why we believe we had more influx than ever, and without, that we know of, cases of COVID, which was what really mattered to us.

One of the aspects that most affected Spanish yacht clubs, closely linked to tourism, was a large drop in the number of visitors, something that had a direct impact on their direct income. Did you also notice it in Baiona?

The truth is that these are difficult times, but we believe that as soon as we can return to normality, Monte Real, Baiona, Galicia and Spain in general have more than enough potential to recover the good pre-COVID tourism figures.

Tourists were lost and regattas were suspended, many regattas, even when they were allowed to take place. Was it a wise decision?

It is difficult to generalize and each club will have to take stock of their decisions based on the reasons that led them to make them. Some would suspend thinking that they would not have sailors, others for fear of contagion, and others simply for comfort. In our case, paralyzing all sporting activity was also valued, but finally we opted to continue promoting sailing. We knew that the decision was going to demand a lot from us, as it did, but we decided to go ahead. And the result was perfect. We held practically all our competitions, including the most popular ones such as the Count of Gondomar and the Prince of Asturias, and we did so without contagion. It was a bet on sailing and it worked out well for us. With a lot of effort, yes.

Last year, in the midst of the pandemic, they announced the celebration of the Super Series, which will have to wait until 2022, and the other great news that the club left us in the months of COVID was its choice as the venue for the 2023 J80 World Cup. , something that they had been pursuing for years. Is this achievement the culmination of your commitment to these monotypes?

I would not know if it is the culmination or not, but of course the fact that they have granted us the celebration of the world championship of a class for which we have been betting for years is a very important milestone. One of the points on our program was, and continues to be, the internationalization of Monte Real, and we are working on that. Bringing these two top-level competitions to Galicia is the result of months and months of work, and the truth is that we are very happy.

One of the projects that they plan to launch this year is VELA EN FEMENINO, aimed at promoting the figure of women in the world of sailing. Tell us more about this proposal.

It is about taking another step in our commitment to women in the world of sailing, because there are still very few women who sail today. 25 years ago we launched, I don’t know if it was the first, but one of the first exclusively female competitions in Spain, the Ladies Cup, and now what we intend to do is launch new lines of action with the same objective, which is none other than to achieve that women have more presence in the nautical world. We have designed a series of proposals for training, competition and also of a social nature, with women victims of gender violence; and we are trying to find a sponsor who shares our same vision and wants to promote this initiative.

The woman will be, then, the protagonist of the future of the club… what other projects do you have in mind for the coming years?

The truth is that we have many projects on the table, although not all of them can be counted because some are still in negotiations or are not completely closed. From what can be counted, training will undoubtedly be one of our bets. We have managed to become a training center of the Royal Yachting Association and in a few months we will be the first club in Galicia and the entire Spanish Bay of Biscay to offer its prestigious courses, which are the most important in the nautical sector worldwide. We will also begin to offer courses to obtain the PNB, the PER and the qualifications of skipper and captain of yachts; and with regard to infrastructure, we are going to improve the club’s facilities, putting fingers in all our seats, which was a demand of many of our visitors, especially international ones. There is also an important advance that is taking place and that we hope to be able to announce in a few weeks, but for now we have to wait.

The SUPER SERIES will arrive in Baiona in 2022

The 52 SUPER SERIES will finally arrive in Baiona in 2022. The organization of the circuit, one of the three most important nautical events in the world, has decided to cancel all the regattas scheduled for the start of the 2021 season, including those that were to be held in Galicia .

The situation derived from COVID19, the numerous restrictions that are still in force in numerous points and the great efforts necessary to guarantee a safe event in the midst of the pandemic are behind a decision that the Monte Real Club de Yates, which was going to host of the event next June, they greatly regret.

For the president of the historic Baion club, José Luis Álvarez, it is a shame not to be able to count on this prestigious circuit this year in Galicia, but he is confident – he said – that the COVID situation will improve in the coming months and allow the BAIONA to be held SAILING WEEK in 2022.

Álvarez said he understands the circumstances that have led the organization to make this decision and conveyed to the organizers the club’s commitment to the circuit. “In 2022 -said the president of Monte Real- We will be more prepared than ever to receive the SUPER SERIES and it will be an equally special edition, since it will coincide with the Xacobeo extended by COVID until next year”.

With high performance and great international prestige, the 52 SUPER SERIES are one of the three most important nautical events in the world, along with the America’s Cup and the World Sailing Tour. They are considered the “Formula 1 of the sea” and their impact reaches figures of up to two million euros of investment in local companies and services. The organization of each of the stages involves the movement of some 500 people, up to 12 megayachts and numerous support boats.

“The suspension of the Saint Tropez, Baiona and Cascais regattas has been a very difficult decision to make, but the circuit attracts teams from all over the world and there is still not enough certainty to ensure a safe and competitive event. In this changing situation, it is our obligation to minimize possible risks and with this new plan, travel and transportation are minimized and we ensure greater security” said the CEO of the 52 SUPER SERIES Agustín Zulueta.
