New assault of the Gestilar J80 Autumn League this Saturday in Baiona. The Monte Real Club de Yates autumn one-design championship celebrates its second day with Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto leading the table.
The current Spanish champion of the class is leading the competition with perfect partials of 1-1-1, after having won with a full victories in the three races held on the opening day.
For this second stage, the program has scheduled the dispute of another three regattas, and if the conditions allow its celebration, the more than twenty crews of the J80 group will have the opportunity to make their first discard.
This possibility of eliminating the worst result of the table will surely adjust the classification even more, and will force the fleet to try to avoid any error, no matter how small, in the following days. In a 5-stage circuit, with 15 tasks and only 2 discards, any failure can be very expensive for the teams.
Waiting to see what will happen this Saturday, in which the weather announces good conditions for navigation (winds from the south with an average of 7 knots and peaks of up to 12), the three boats that are in the lead are the Alboroto de Juan Carlos Ameneiro (MRCYB), Bica de Chisco Catalán (MRCYB) and Guillermo Blanco’s I3D Atlántico (RCN A CORUÑA).

The sailboat, current champion of Spain in the class, won the three tests held on the first day of competition, making its objectives very clear in this autumn league, which are none other than to win the final victory and thus continue directing the preparation for the 2023 world cup.
The boat manned by Javier Aguado, Javier Lago and Antoni Xabier del Río, who replaced the usual team member Juan Lago in this inaugural stage, completed three very good races, succeeding in tactics, securing the edges, the first passing through the buoy with maneuvers clean and widening the distance with their rivals as soon as they found an opportunity.
It did not make it easy for him, yes, the rest of the fleet that is competing for the championship, some crews that have been adding quality throughout the year thanks to the large number of competitions that have been held in Galicia, including the recent Championship of Spain disputed in Baiona.

With a new boat and this being the first time they had seen each other face to face with the regulars of the J80 races in Baiona, Gómez’s men completed three very good races and managed to place themselves in seventh position in the table behind Mondo, which was sixth.
The start of the autumn championship of the Monte Real Club de Yates was celebrated with 19 of the 23 boats registered in the water, and conditions that, although they were not very good at the beginning (with a shifty wind that forced to suspend a test already started change the location of the field), they did allow the three scheduled sleeves to be disputed.

The Galician J80 fleet returns to Baiona this weekend to inaugurate the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, the competition with which the Monte Real Club de Yates closes its 2022 regatta season.
More than 20 one-design sailboats will be measured between the months of October and December in five days in which there are programs for a total of 15 tests, with a maximum of three per stage, on October 29, November 12 and 26, and 3 and December 17.
They may be, depending on the weather conditions and the decisions of the regatta committee, or windward-leeward races between buoys, or coastal courses. Regardless of the competition design chosen for each day, the tests will always start at three in the afternoon and the last start of each day must be given one hour before sunset.
Among the participants we will see the current J80 Spanish champions in the general and mixed categories, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto and Luis de Mira’s Namasté. They will also enter the fray, among others, Cansino de Nano Yáñez, who in the previous edition of the league won the bronze medal; and the 2021 winner, the Marías from the Portuguese Cunha family, who will join the competition from December.
In addition to winning the Monte Real and Gestilar autumn championship, the crews attend the event with the aim of starting to define their teams and carry out the first joint training sessions ahead of the J80 World Championship to be held in Baiona in September. of 2023.

A victory achieved with a very comfortable margin of points with respect to its most direct rivals and the result of a very good racing season.

After being victorious, the owner of the Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team, Nuria Sánchez, was very satisfied to have been able to revalidate the title of the previous edition. “The effort we have made throughout all this time with the “We want to make history” project has been rewarded with many successes like this one, victories that encourage us to continue working. The evolution and commitment of the girls has been very good and we have already set ourselves new goals for 2023”.
The team’s crew, in addition to the owner herself, includes the Olympian Natalia Via-Dufresne, María Torcida, Mar Gil, Carlota Hernández and Martina Ruigómez. Barely 11 years old, the latter, daughter of the outstanding sailor Carlos ‘Puro’ Ruigómez, is the clearest example of the Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team’s commitment to promising young sailors in Spain.
“In the team we have always sought to include new crew members, of all ages. It is currently made up of half juniors and half seniors, and this mix of ages and experiences does nothing but enrich and strengthen it.”, says Nuria Sánchez, who not only defends exclusively female sailing, but also mixed teams, which she considers a very good opportunity to give women the boost they need in Spanish sailing.
“Despite all the advances that have been made from different areas, there is still a lot of work to be done so that the number of federative licenses for women continues to grow. And this is something we cannot do alone. We need help from men, we need them to support us and, above all, trust us”, assures the owner of the Dorsia Covirán, who is clear that “sailing in mixed teams in one-design competitions such as the J80, in which strength is not so important, will allow us women to continue growing hand in hand with men, and finally develop more all-female teams .”
The Final of the Women’s Sailing League that took place these days in Baiona was organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation. The tests, which were part of the Iberdrola Women’s Sailing Circuit, were held thanks to the sponsorship of the Isonor Group and with the collaboration of the Xunta de Galicia, the Pontevedra Provincial Council, the Baiona City Council and the Royal Galician Sailing Federation.
Despite the fact that a total of six tests were planned in the program, three per day, the adverse weather conditions left in the Rías Baixas by the Beatrice storm, with a lot of rain and a very intense wind, only allowed the dispute of two sleeves on Saturday.
Both were won by Dorsia Covirán, who won the Isonor Trophy gold. The silver and bronze of this last phase went to the team from the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, led by Berta Campos; and the Galician Pazo de Cea, by Rosario García, with a pendant from the Monte Real Yacht Club.

At the awards ceremony, which put an end to the competition, the participants, among other authorities, were the Minister of Equality of the Xunta de Galicia, María Jesús Lorenzana; the commercial director of Grupo Isonor, María Fraguas; and the head of sporting events at the Monte Real Club de Yates, Marga Cameselle.
Cameselle thanked the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation for having chosen Monte Real for the celebration of the last phase of the women’s circuit and highlighted the alignment of this initiative with the club’s “Sailing for Women” program.
“More than a quarter of a century ago ,” he said, we launched the Ladies Cup, a 100 percent female competition, and since then we have not stopped betting on women. We promote exclusively female teams and help them so that they can participate in state competitions; we created specific awards for women in our trophies; we take women victims of sexist violence out on the water… these are some of the things we have done and continue to do, and we still have many more to start”.

An orange alert due to a storm with sustained winds above 30 knots and gusts of more than 40 conditioned the premiere of the final of the National Women’s Sailing League that is being held this weekend in Baiona, delaying its start for more than five hours.
From twelve noon, when the tests were scheduled to start, until almost ten past five in the afternoon, when the first and only regatta of the day could finally start, the crews stayed on the ground watching Beatrice, the low pressure system that arrived in Galicia after the passage of the Armand storm, brought with it a maritime storm.
It took hours for the conditions to be conducive to sailing, but the passage of a downpour and the subsequent drop in wind intensity gave a respite to the event, opened a parenthesis of improvement in the weather and the regatta committee was able to set up a field with a quite boarded south wind and about 23 knots of intensity, with peaks of more than 30, even reaching 39 knots on some very specific occasion.
This is how the participating crews, from the Canary Islands, the Basque Country, the Valencian Community and Galicia, competed, competing in fleet and real time, two windward-leeward type tests between buoys.

The winner of both was the Dorsia Coviran Sailing Team, the boat built by Nuria Sánchez and led by the Olympian Natalia Vía-Dufresne who runs for the Marina Burriananova (Castellón).
In the first race, while the rest of the crews stayed more or less together throughout the navigation, the Valencian J80 was always in the lead, at a distance, marking power, and managed to be the first to cross the finish line. The second and third places were occupied by the boat from the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, led by Berta Campos; and the canary Code Zero, by Simona Manfredini.
In the second and last regatta of the day, the victory was also for Dorsia, but the team did not have it so easy and had to fight harder for the victory due to the good performance of the Cantabrian Zona Norte de María Sánchez (RCM Santander), who finished second. ; and the Alicante team, which finished third.

Baiona hosts this weekend the final of the National Women’s Sailing League – Isonor Trophy, a competition promoted by the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation to promote the participation of women in regattas.
The Monte Real Club de Yates will be in charge of organizing the last tests of a circuit that, after passing through the Abra (Women’s Sailing Cup), Alicante (Tabarca Vela) and Palma de Mallorca (Copa del Rey MAPFRE), arrives in Galicia to decide the best female crew in Spain.
In the final, sponsored by the Isonor Group, teams made up entirely of women participate who, aboard J80 one-designs, will compete in a minimum of two and a maximum of six regattas inside the bay of Baiona. They will be routes between buoys, of the windward-leeward type, with double laps, which will score in real time and which will allow the crews to eliminate their worst result from the fourth race on.
Among the participants, the Galician autonomous community is the one with the largest number of representatives, with a total of three. Through Galicia run the Pazo de Cea, by Rosario García; the SND Cormorant, from Africa Alonso; and Miudo, by Marta Ramada.
From Las Palmas de Gran Canaria comes the Zero Code, led by Simona Manfredini; from Santander, the North Zone, by María Sánchez; from Alicante a crew from the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante, with Berta Campos at the head; and Silvia Marce’s Fhimasa team (RCM Abra RSC) is registered for the Basque Country.
At the starting line we will also see the Dorsia Covirán Sailing Team, the Marina Burriananova team that, after putting up very good performances in the previous phases, is first in the general classification and is the one with the most ballots to end up the winner and win the League laurels. The Final of the National Women’s Sailing League – Isonor Trophy, was officially presented this Friday in Baiona at a press conference in which the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez, highlighted the work done for years in Baiona to promote women in the world of sailing and what they will continue to do, he assured. “The female presence in the world of sailing needs and deserves -said Álvarez- continue to make its way, and this is something that will only be achieved if we are all committed to egalitarian sport. This National League is yet another attempt to give women the prominence that history owes them.”.
The commercial director of Grupo Isonor, María Fraguas, revealed that her company’s commitment to this initiative, of which it is a sponsor, is based on the identification of its brand with all the values of sport. “In Isonor we are proud -he said- to promote those activities in which we believe. A meeting of patrons and several training regattas served, this Friday, as a preliminary preparation for a fleet that was able to make a first contact with the club, with its rivals to beat, and also with the Rías Baixas, which offered them a day typically autumnal, with some rain, clouds and a lot of wind, reaching over 25 knots at times.
A weather not very different from the one they will have during the tests on Saturday and Sunday, for which winds from the south are expected, always above 15 knots and with peaks that could approach 30, a lot of cloudiness and moments of punctual rain.
After the celebration of the two days of competition, on Sunday afternoon, at six, the Monte Real Club de Yates will host the awards ceremony for the winners, an act that will be attended, among other authorities, by the Regional Minister of Equality of the Xunta de Galicia, María Jesús Lorenzana.
The winning crews will receive, as an award, a pictorial work created specifically for the occasion by the artist Willy Ramos Castro. It is titled “Take air, fly and triumph”, it is made with mixed techniques of acrylic, oil and natural pigments on wood and symbolizes the symbiosis of women with the sea through sailing.

The wind wanted to be the protagonist in the final day of the 37th Prince of Asturias Trophy organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Naval School of Marín. The day was not easy for any of the fleets of the eight participating categories and neither for the regatta committees, although the harsh conditions did not prevent the last tests from being held to crown the new winners of the star regatta of Galician sailing.
The passage of a front through the Rías Baixas, which left sustained wind conditions of about twenty knots and points of almost thirty, forced the almost ninety participating teams to give one hundred percent in a final day in which all the leaders on Saturday ended up claiming the definitive victory.

The Aceites Abril of Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal (Real Club Náutico de Vigo) achieved a hard-fought first position in the only race held this Sunday in the ABANCA ORC 1 class with a second advantage over Xekmatt (Lisbon Naval Association). The Portuguese team led by Hugo and João Prista, however, was served by second place to proclaim themselves the winner of the Prince of Asturias Trophy ahead of Julio Rodríguez’s Magical from Vigo, who was second overall. The team of the Pérez-Canal brothers, meanwhile, closed the podium in the third drawer. In addition to the title in its category, the Xekmatt also won in this thirty-seventh edition the trophy for the absolute winner of ORC divisions 1 to 4 and the Count of Barcelona Don Juan de Borbón Award for the best Portuguese crew. A Prince, without a doubt, round for the Prista team, which, being a regular on the podium in previous editions, achieved its second overall victory after ten years.

The Vanguard ORC Open class grand prix goes to Coruña

This Sunday, with two more races completed in which they scored a third and a new partial victory, Roman’s men became the new winners of the Prince of Asturias Trophy in the Solventis J80 class, a category that this year had more than thirty units in contention, mainly due to the proximity of the Spanish Championship, which will be held in Baiona in two weeks. With the victory, the GP Bullhound also won the Juan Sebastián Elcano Trophy for the best J80 of the edition. The Solventis J80 category podium was completed by Ignacio Camino’s Solintal (Real Club Marítimo de Santander) and Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen (Monte Real Club de Yates), second and third respectively.
Silleiro confirmed its dominance in the Gestilar Ladies Cup
In the exclusively female category, the Gestilar Ladies Cup, the Silleiro commanded by Carlota Hernández from Vigo and representing Marina Burriananova managed to defend the leadership this Sunday with a third and a first place. With these results they managed to proclaim themselves winners of the twenty-sixth edition of the Ladies Cup. Behind, second place went to Tutatis de Pilar Casares (Real Club Náutico de Puerto Pollensa) and third place went to the sailors from Serralleiras with Helena Alegre at the helm (Real Club Náutico de Palma).

Some of the most outstanding athletes on the Spanish nautical scene were honored this Saturday in Baiona at the National Sailing Awards gala, which were delivered at the Monte Real Club de Yates within the framework of the 37th Prince of Asturias Trophy.
In a club decorated for the occasion and in front of a crowd of spectators, José María “Pichu” Torcida, Nuria Sánchez, María Perelló, Marta Cardona, Javier Banderas, Piti Estébanez and Rafael Díaz went up on stage to collect their awards for best sailor , the best project, the best dinghy sailing team and the best boat. The only one who could not attend was the Spaniard Pablo Santurde, winner of the award for best sailor, whose tribute coincided with his wedding day.
Hosted by the Galician Television presenter, Carlos Macía; and the head of communication at Monte Real, Rosana Calvo; The event began with welcoming speeches by the president of the organizing club, José Luis Álvarez; and the president of Bodegas Terras Gauda, José María Fonseca Moretón, sponsor of the national awards. Both agreed to point out the importance of an event that celebrates its 30th anniversary this year and that throughout its history has served to recognize the successes of Spanish sailing.
After the welcome speeches, the winners followed one another on stage to collect their award. The first to do so was José María “Pichu” Torcida from Santander, who received the award for the best sailor for his victories in the Spanish and European J80 Championships. He thanked all those who accompanied him in the world of sailing for so long for the award. “Crew, owners, sponsors, family and especially my wife.” He had a souvenir also for his J70 crew, without which, he said, “This award would not have been possible.” And he ended by congratulating Monte Real for next year’s J80 World Championship and for the work it is doing to promote the J80 fleet.
The Mariano Aguado Communication Award went this year to the program “Atando Cabos” from the production company TacTic Audiovisual, and it was its director, Vicente Robles, who was in charge of collecting it. “After 20 years giving coverage and support to sailing, we thought that this sport did not have a specific program -said Robles- and thus Tying Cabos was born. And almost 200 shows later, what we’ve achieved has been amazing. This National Award is the icing on the cake”.
The next award of the night, for the best female project, was collected by Nuria Sánchez, for her initiative “We want to make history” , a proposal that, for years, has tried to spread and promote the figure of women in the world of sailing. In her speech, the sailor from Alicante said that they will continue working to be messengers of equality. “In these four years we have worked hard, creating and reaping the fruit that we are now. We involve the smallest, we bet on young promises and we also reach out to veterans and legends. And we can only thank all those who bet on us”, said.
With a sporting career spanning a quarter of a century behind them, the people from Malaga at the Teatro Soho Caixabank, led by Javier Banderas, collected the award for best ORC boat after achieving their sixth victory in the Copa del Rey. Accompanied by sports director Piti Estébanez and crew member Rafael Díaz, Banderas thanked Monte Real and Terras Gauda for an award that, he said, is the fruit of long experience. “The secret of our crew is that we have been sailing together for 25 years and it is now that we are reaping the rewards. It is a pride for all of us to collect this prestigious award in Baiona” .
The last prize of the night went to the youngest of the gala, the Majorcan sailors, 17 years old, María Perelló and Marta Cardona. They were distinguished by their gold medals in the World and European 420 class. “Values such as teamwork, the desire to excel, respect, perseverance, overcoming limits, self-discipline or responsibility are some of the values that make sailing for us more than just a sport, which be a whole lifestyle”, assured before concluding that “We have achieved many things this year, but we like to think that the best is yet to come”.

To this thirtieth edition of the National Sailing Awards, in addition to the presidents of the Monte Real Yacht Club and Terras Gauda wineries, organizer and sponsor of the event; the commanding director of the Naval Military School, Pedro Cardona; the territorial director of ABANCA, Walter Álvarez; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; the territorial delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Vigo, Marta Fernández-Tapias; the deputy for sports from the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez, and the widow of Mariano Aguado, Pilar de Sas.
A display of fireworks and a party enlivened with live music put an end to the gala held within the framework of the Prince of Asturias Trophy, which will hold its final tests tomorrow, Sunday, and will crown its winners.

Spectacular second day of regattas in the Rías Baixas. The thirty-seventh edition of the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy, a test organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Marín Naval School, successfully completed its planned test program this Saturday and even made up some of the races that were not disputed on Friday. Xekmatt, Marías, Urbapaz, Deep Blue 2.1, Cinco Islas Albariño, Salseiro, GP Bullhound and Silleiro will face the final day at the top of the podium in their respective categories.
The wind did comply with the fleet in this second day of regattas in the waters of the Vigo estuary. He did it with mild conditions at the start, enough so that the Race Committee could honk the start for all classes between half past twelve and one in the afternoon. Winds of between six and eight knots from the southwest component was the general trend in the three regatta fields at the beginning of the day, although as the hours passed they reached an average of up to thirteen knots.

In total, the second day of the Prince was resolved with three new tests for the ORC 1 to 4 divisions, a coastal one for ORC 5 and Open, three tasks for the Figaros that compete in the Gestilar Ladies Cup and four for the J80 monotypes.
Xekmatt maintains the lead in ABANCA ORC 1
There were no changes in the general classification of ABANCA ORC 1 after adding up to three tests in a windward-leeward format this Saturday. The Portuguese Xekmatt de Hugo and Joao Prista tied with the Magical in the lead in the first race of the day and added another partial victory in his locker plus a third, results that allow the ship of the Naval Association of Lisbon to occupy one more day the leadership of the general ahead of Julio Rodríguez’s Magical (Real Club Náutico de Vigo), who once again scored two seconds in addition to the tie in the first round, and Aceites Abril of the brothers Jorge and Luis Pérez-Canal, who again occupy the third place with two third positions and one first in the last test of the day. Urbapaz takes the lead in April ORC Oils 3
In the Aceites Abril ORC 3 class, the second day ends with a new leader in the general classification. José Francisco Edreira’s Urbapaz (Club Náutico Cabanas), who was second yesterday, shone today in the regatta field and, with three partial victories in the three races held, comes to dominate ahead of Ramón Ojea’s Sailway (Club Marítimo de Canid). With three seconds scored, Ojea’s men now occupy second position with six points ahead of the third, Diogo Talone’s Milaneza (Clube de Vela Atlántico).

It was more difficult today for Vicente Cid’s Deep Blue 2.1. In Gadis ORC 5, the partial victory was scored by Iñaki Carbajo’s Cinco Islas Albariño, who sails representing the Club Náutico de Beluso. The team commanded by Per Roman dominates with a three-point advantage over Ignacio Camino’s Solintal of the Real Club Marítimo de Santander, which with a 2-2-3-5 split is in second position. With the weather pending from a storm coming from Greenland, a huge influx of boats that left the club’s pontoons without space and the presence of world and Spanish champions among the crews, this Friday the first tests of the competition will be held.
On the previous day, the closing of registrations left a majority of Galician, Portuguese and Cantabrian boats on the lists, and an Olympic sailor raffling the sailboats for the Ladies Cup.

Although there are only a few hours left before the start of the competition, and by now the weather forecast is usually clear, no one from the regatta committee has yet dared to give an exact forecast of what is going to happen these three days of the Prince of Asturias Trophy .

For now, from the organization they trust that the rain will give the sailors a break and the wind, which in principle looks like it will blow from the west, will remain above 9 or 10 knots, with peaks of up to 14.
If it remains boarded and the conditions are favorable, the fleet of the largest boats, grouped in the different ORC classes, will complete two windward-leeward runs, between buoys. Two upwind and two stern in each of the tests will serve to begin to measure forces and release the markers.
In the event that the wind does not pick up and there are difficulties in designing the course, the regatta committee has prepared up to ten different coastal routes, all along the Vigo estuary although with different obligatory passage points.
Intensity and emotion from minute zero
If the competitive models of previous years are repeated, the opening day will not only serve to take the pulse of the regatta fields and will already be one of the most exciting in the trophy. The crews usually arrive in Baiona with a lot of energy and try to demonstrate their power by putting all the meat on the grill from the first tests.
The starting signal will be, on the first day, the latest of the three days. The ORC fleet will hear it at three in the afternoon and half an hour later, at half past three, it will be the turn of the J80 and the girls of the Gestilar Ladies Cup.
Once the tests are over, the well-deserved rest of the fleet in the village located in the club’s gardens will complete the opening day on Friday.

Galician, Portuguese and Cantabrian, will be, in this order, the accents that will be heard the most in a Prince of Asturias Trophy that, favored by the arrival of boats for the Spanish J80 Championship to be held in Baiona in just a few days, has brought together more than 80 sailboats.
“This year we have achieved a very good number of boats. There was a certain fear about the downward evolution that is being seen in many of the regattas that have been held in recent months in Galicia, but the truth is that the Prince never fails. People want to come to Baiona not only to compete, but also to enjoy with friends”, assures the sports director of Monte Real, Roy Alonso.
The figure of 70 boats that the club established as a participation limit to ensure the comfort of the crews in the club’s space, was finally exceeded and the organization looked for alternatives for the location of the boats. “We have requested the pontoon of the caravel Pinta and placed buoys so that all those who wanted to be here, yes or yes, could be” , says Roy Alonso, who appreciates the understanding of the owners and crew to be in the regatta despite the lack of space.

With more than 30 registered units, the Solventis J80 class is the most numerous in the trophy and from which a greater spectacle is expected due to the quality of the crews. They will sail inside the bay of Baiona, they will compete in real time and they will compete, if the wind allows it, three double courses of the windward leeward type between buoys.
Among the participants we will see the Etnia Barcelona de Peru Múgica (RCM Santander), current champion of the Prince and defender of the title; the Andalusian GP Bullhound led by Per Roman, who in the last European event of the class was one step away from getting on the podium and who this time has the recent snipe world champion Alfredo González on board; the Spanish runner-up Biobizz, led by José Azqueta (RCM del Abra RSC), or the Cantabrian Solintal, of the former J80 world champion Ignacio Camino.

José María “Pichu ” Torcida from Santander will collect the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award on September 3 in Baiona, accrediting him as the best sailor of 2021, an award that the Cantabrian will receive for his victories in the Spanish and European Sailing Championships. J70.
It will be the third National Sailing Award with which this 58-year-old industrial engineer is recognized, considered one of the best Spanish sailing skippers in recent decades. After being distinguished as the best skipper of the year 2010 and receiving the award for the best team of the year 2011 with the Iberdrola Team , who skippered then; Torcida will add a new recognition to its long list of awards in a few weeks.
“Receiving such a prestigious award is a great satisfaction. That they remember you, for me, has a lot of meaning, because it is a reward for the time dedicated to this exciting sport” , says Torcida, who will receive the award “Among friends and in a place as emblematic as the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona, which I have a special affection for”.
And it is that Galicia has been, without a doubt, one of the places most visited by Torcida during 2021, where he trained and competed aboard the Noticia, of the Real Club Náutico de Santander, the ship of which he has been the owner and skipper since 2016, and that has given him so much joy. After winning, in May 2021, the J70 Spanish Championship, held in A Coruña; The European Championship in September, in Denmark, arrived, in which he won leading a luxury team, made up of Luis Martín Cabiedes, Rayco Tabares, Pablo Santurde and Fran Palacio.
“The one-design regattas, of anyone… J70, J80, FC8, Soto40, TP52 are the best… because not only do you have to be very prepared, -says Torcida- but also have a good team. Being at the top in such close competitions is super rewarding. I miss having done more offshore regattas, but I haven’t had time for everything”, he concludes.

In J70, Torcida has already won several victories in different Spanish championships, a European gold and silver, and a third place in the World Championship. The world championship has eluded him so far in J70, but he has already had two in J80 (2007 and 2010), a class with which he has also scored several podium finishes in national championships and cups.
His sports curriculum, in which his participation in the 1993-1994 round-the-world trip aboard the Galicia Pescanova stands out, is as extensive as it is varied. It includes victories in the IMS 500, Sydney 40 and Class 40 world championships; a couple of First Class 8 European championships; a win at the 2015 Fasnet Rolex; or several Copas del Rey, among others.
A half century of life linked to the sea that Pichu Torcida has known how to make the most of, ever since his father, José David Torcida, bought him and his brother a little sailing boat to go from Puertochico to Puntal; going through the sailing courses in the Marítimo de Santander; and his first steps in the world of competition. A path plagued with efforts and victories that will take him to Baiona on September 3 to collect a prize for sailor of the year, which is also, without a doubt, recognition of a brilliant career.
