Next May, the Galician Rías Baixas will host the second of the five events scheduled for the seventeenth edition of the 44CUP
The competition is one of the 11 events on the regatta calendar of the historic Baion club, which includes the classic Conde de Gondomar Trophy, Prince of Asturias Trophy and Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards.
The Monte Real Yacht Club of Baiona will once again place the focus of world yachting on Galicia thanks to the celebration, next May, of the 44CUP . The prestigious international regatta circuit will arrive in the Rías Baixas to celebrate one of the five events scheduled for its seventeenth edition.
The arrival of this competition in Galicia represents a new success in the efforts of the recently re-elected board of directors of Monte Real, headed by José Luis Álvarez and Alechu Retolaza as president and vice president; and the fulfillment of one of the objectives set: that of returning to the MRCYB the international prestige it once had.
After having managed to attract Baiona to the famous 52 SUPER SERIES in 2022 and having hosted the J80 class World Championship in 2023; This year it will be the RC44, another one-design, in a new commitment to the “One design”, with all the teams sailing in identical boats.
The sailboat, created by the considered best skipper in the history of the America’s Cup, the New Zealander Russell Coutts, is a highly competitive boat worth around one million euros. A sailboat built in carbon fiber, very light, 13.45 meters (44 feet), with a large sail area and the most advanced navigation systems.
At the head of these haggling machines are shipowners with great economic potential, who hire their crews by recruiting Olympic medalists, America’s Cup crew members and sailors from the Round the World Sailing Championship. A complete cast of professionals from all over the world who guarantee spectacular regattas wherever they go.
In 2024, this show represented by the RC44 and the 44CUP will stop in Baiona with all the impact that this implies, with the presence of some of the best names in world sailing and figures that speak of an economic return that exceeds one million euros in the venues.
It will be the most international and one of the most important events in the regatta calendar of the Monte Real Yacht Club in 2024, in which a prominent place is once again reserved for its historic Conde de Gondomar Trophy and Prince of Asturias Trophy, which this year They turn 49 and 39 years old respectively, and they will be celebrated, as is tradition, coinciding with the holiday of July 25 and the first weekend of September.
The Repsol Trophy It changes the month this year and moves forward to April (from the 26th to the 28th), so as not to coincide with the 44CUP; and also in April the CdC Trophy (April 20), which this year coincides with the Cíes League – Rande, a new competition organized by several clubs in the Rías Baixas, including Monte Real, with two versions, a winter one (April 20) and an autumn one (September 14).
June will be the month of Galician Championship of Two (June 15), which Monte Real will organize for the thirteenth consecutive year; and in July, in addition to competition with the Count of Gondomar (from the 25th to the 28th), there will be time for leisure with the fourth edition of the Rias Baixas Route, a Xacobean pilgrimage by sea.
The Prince of Asturias Trophy, within which framework the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards, will be held from September 6 to 8; and the J80 will once again have their two leagues own, the winter one (February 10 and 24, March 9 and 23 and April 6) and the autumn one (October 5 and 19, November 9 and 23 and December 14).
The organization of regattas is, along with the promotion of national and international nautical tourism, one of the main objectives of Monte Real, which has nautical training as its third line of action. So much so that the Sailing School will once again have, in 2024, a prominent role in the club’s programming, with dinghy sailing and cruising courses, and adapted sailing activities that will include actions and activities for people with functional diversity, women victims of sexist violence, warded children or people with behavioral problems, among others.
