The countdown begins for the arrival in Galicia of the 52 SUPER SERIES, the most important monohull circuit in the world, which will open its regatta season at the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona.
From May 23 to 28, the Galician Rías Baixas will host the initial tests of a competition in which some of the best sailors from the 5 continents participate. Allegre (UK), Gladiator (UK), Interlodge (USA), Phoenix (South Africa), Platoon (Germany), Provezza (Turkey), Quantum Racing (USA) and Sled (USA) are the teams that will compete in Galicia.
To make their arrival in Baiona possible, the Monte Real Yacht Club has been working tirelessly for months. The organization of the event alone moves about 500 people, including crews and support staff, and at the club, despite being used to hosting massive events, they have had to deal with very complicated logistics.
In addition to the necessary restructuring of the mooring points in the club’s marina to be able to place these large sailboats, Monte Real has had to plan in detail the location of the large containers with which each team will arrive in Baiona.
They will all be located inside a historic site such as the Parador Nacional de Baiona, where the club is located, and to the technical and usability requirements of the organization and the different crews, the need to guarantee the protection of the place is added. , of high heritage value.
The great technical and technological deployment of the event also implies the coordination of operations, the movement of trailers and cranes, the restructuring of spaces, the management of supplies, the preparation of the staging and an infinity of other tasks that Monte Real is carrying out, in addition, without paralyzing or altering its sports and social programming.
“If bringing SUPER SERIES to Baiona was a challenge, organizing the event while maintaining our usual activity is proving to be quite a challenge”, says the vice president of Monte Real, Alejandro Retolaza. “The organizational and logistical demands are enormous, but we will be up to the task of such an important event -assures-, and not only for all that it means for the club, but also because Baiona and Galicia will be the focus of international attention during those days. The responsibility is very great.”
The arrival of the 52 SUPER SERIES in Baiona thanks to the efforts of the Monte Real Yacht Club and the sponsorship of ABANCA and the Xacobeo 21-22 will undoubtedly be the nautical event of the year in Galicia. And in the small Galician fishing village they already have everything ready for the Baiona Sailing Week to cast off.

After a first day in which the scarce wind only allowed the holding of one of the three scheduled tests in the bay of Baiona and a second stage in which the fog forced the coastal route between Baiona and Combarro to be shortened and made it difficult for the the fleet; This Sunday, on the third and last day of competition, the lack of wind left the markers blank. The last test of the program, a coastal route between Combarro and Baiona, was canceled and the final classification was defined with two tests for the J80 class and a single test for the rest of the classes.
In ORC 1-2-3 , the winner was Julio Rodríguez’s Magical. Their victory just a few weeks ago in the Comunica Trophy and this new victory in the Repsol Trophy make it clear that the crew of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo will be one of the teams to take into account in the Galician regatta season. · The Monte Real Club de Yates adds this year a new race starting in the Pontevedra estuary to the trophy with which it inaugurates the cruise season
· The participating sailboats will be able to choose the starting point from Combarro or Vigo and will converge in Baiona as the end point of the route
· The one-day regatta will be held on Saturday from noon and the awards ceremony will be held in the afternoon at Monte Real
The Monte Real Club de Yates inaugurates its 2022 cruise season this Saturday with the Comunica Trophy, which this year is split to include two different regattas, one from the Pontevedra estuary and the other from the Vigo estuary.
The participating boats will be able to choose between Combarro and Vigo as the starting point, but both options will converge at an intermediate point of the route and will coincide in the arrival, which will be located in the same place for the entire fleet.
The earliest test will be Combarro – Baiona, with departure scheduled for twelve noon near the Marina Combarro, which collaborates with Monte Real in organizing the event. From the coast of the picturesque town of Pontevedra, the sailboats will have a route of about 22 nautical miles ahead of them.
The sailboats that choose Vigo as a starting point will do less travel, for which it is estimated that it will be approximately 15 miles of journey. This test design, scheduled to leave at two in the afternoon from the vicinity of the port of Vigo, is the one that has traditionally been disputed thanks to the collaboration of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo.
If the regatta committee’s calculations are met, there will come a point where the sailboats coming through the Pontevedra estuary and those sailing through the Vigo estuary will group together, predictably around the Cíes Islands area. From there, the fleet will head to the same finish, near Baiona, and it will be at the Monte Real Club de Yates where the awards ceremony will be held starting at seven in the afternoon.
Cruisers, Open class sailboats, and J80 and Figaros monotypes may participate in the regatta. If there are enough registered (there must be a minimum of 6 to form a class), an A2 category will also be created for those teams formed only by a skipper and a crew member.
In the last edition, in which more than 40 boats from Spain and Portugal participated, the winners were Rui Ramada’s Yess Racing (ORC 1-2), Vicente Cid’s Deep Blue (ORC 3-4), Víctor’s Nahela Manuel Álvarez (ORC Open) and the Bon III of Víctor Carrión and Horacio Pequeno (A2). In monotypes, the victory of the Fígaros went to Serralleiras de Paula Rey and in J80 it was won by Maija de José Luis Pérez.

The sailboat led by the historic sailor from Vigo and crewed by Diego Fernández and Jaime Gándara added a new title this Saturday (the fourth in a row) to those achieved in 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021
· El Alboroto by Juan Carlos Ameneiro and El Cansino by Alejandra Suárez won silver and bronze in a competition in which Spaco by Santiago Estévez and Marías by Manel Cunha closed the group of the 5 best
· The J80 Winter League held during these first months of the year in Baiona thanks to the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales once again highlighted the good health enjoyed by the 8 meters in Galicia
· With the closing of the one-design championship at the Monte Real Yacht Club, they are now preparing to open the cruise season that will begin this April with the celebration of the Comunica Trophy and the Repsol Trophy
Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen once again demonstrated this Saturday why it is one of the best J80s in Galicia after winning, once again, the Winter League that the Monte Real Club de Yates organizes for the 8-meter monotypes.
The sailboat led by the historic sailor from Vigo and with Diego Fernández and Jaime Gándara as base crew, who were joined by different sailors in the different days, added its fifth title in the competition (the fourth consecutive) after those achieved in 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021.
He did it with a final balance of 14 points derived from almost perfect partials (1-2-1-3-1-1-1-1-1-1-1), from discarding his two worst results from the classification (a 4th place and one offline) and to beat the second and third classified by 12 and 29 points.
The general director of Baitra Accesorios Navales, Juan Carlos González, was in charge, as sponsor of the event, of delivering the trophy to a team that will surely be talked about in the remainder of the regatta season, not only in the J80 leagues but also in the other competitions in which the 8 meters participate with their own class.
After collecting his award, Javier de la Gándara was very satisfied with having achieved this fifth league victory, and if he did so, he said, “in a competition in which it is increasingly difficult to win because -as he assured- the quality of the crews has increased a lot and there are teams that sail very well” . For the sailor it was a “very complete league, with many tests and very good wind “, which allowed them to enjoy sailing.
The awards ceremony and subsequent fellowship dinner put an end to a day in which the nerves in the water were especially noticeable. Everyone wanted to adjust their positions as much as possible and improve their results for the final classification and they ended up forcing a general call in the first race and a couple of off-lines in the other two races.
With a north wind that blew with good intensity and a regatta field located between the Virgen de la Roca and las Estelas, the first two races were for Okofen and the third and last for Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, who finished second. overall and took the Winter League silver with 22 points.
Manel Cunha’s Marías, who had all the ballots to close the winners’ podium, did not go out to compete this Saturday, and that caused him to lose all his options to hang a medal. He left Alejandra Suárez’s Cansino free to climb into the third drawer and hang the bronze with 43 points.
The group of the five best in the one design league was closed by Spaco de Santiago Estévez, fourth with 59 points; and the Portuguese Marías, fifth with 69. The trophies were delivered, in addition to the CEO of Baitra, Juan Carlos González; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; and the deputy for Economic Promotion of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Raquel Giráldez.
The Baitra J80 Winter League held during these first four months of the year in Baiona once again revealed the good health enjoyed by the 8 meters in Galicia. A state that is not only reflected in the progressive increase in units but also in the improvement that led to the arrival of coach Carlos Llamas among the crews to prepare the teams for the Spanish Championship and the World Cup that Baiona will host this year and the next. .
With the closing of the one-design league, the Monte Real Yacht Club is now preparing to launch its cruise season, which will begin this month of April with the celebration, on the 23rd, of the Comunica Trophy; and the Repsol Trophy on April 29 and 30 and May 1. The registration period for both competitions is now open through the club’s website.

· The sailboat led by Javier de la Gándara signed two new victories this Sunday in the penultimate stage of the one-design championship
With 8 points away from their most direct rival, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Fuss, the Okofen crew is close to victory in the J80 Winter League

The Okofen was convincing this Sunday in the waters of Baiona in the penultimate day of the J80 Winter League, which the Monte Real Club de Yates has been organizing since last January with the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales.
The crew led by Javier de la Gándara signed two solid victories in the two races held and set the bar even higher for their most direct competitors, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto and Manel Cunha’s Marías, who are second and third respectively. .
There were no changes in the provisional podium in terms of positions, but there were changes in the score that separates the three candidates to win the championship, which is now much wider. The 12 points that Okofen has allow them to already dream of the laurels of the league, by taking an 8-point advantage over Alboroto, which has 20; and 15 to Marías, with 27.
As had happened on Saturday, the regattas this Sunday were also very complicated by the wind. A first test was started that had to be canceled on the first beat. After changing the regatta course, the fleet was able to sail a sleeve that ended up shortened but that allowed the day’s scoring to open. Okofen, Spaco and Cansino got the best score. In the second and last test of the day, which could be played in its entirety, Okofen repeated victory and Alboroto and Marías entered behind them.
This being the case, and waiting for what happens on the last day, if Javier de la Gándara’s crew maintains the streak and the good work of the previous stages (in which they signed some partials of 1-2-1-3 -1-1-4-1-1-1), everything points to the final victory.
The crews that compete in the Monte Real one-design league will meet again on April 2, the day on which the sixth and final phase of the Baitra J80 Winter League is scheduled to be held.
That first Saturday of April, in addition to the competition being resolved, the Monte Real will deliver the prizes to the winners of the championship and will open the doors to the cruise competitions that will arrive in Baiona at the end of the month, with the celebration of the Comunica Trophy (April 23 ) and the Repsol Trophy (April 29 and 30 and May 1).

Until now, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen is the team that has been the most solid in the competition, with four first places and one second. The day had two undisputed protagonists: Alejandra Suárez’s Cansino, who shone -and won- in the first test, completing the course in a very solid way, always in the lead and far from his rivals; and Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, who gave their rivals no respite in the second and third heats, and consolidated their leadership in the competition.

The Baitra J80 Winter League, which will return to the water with the fourth day on March 5, experienced a very special moment this Saturday when the fleet, before starting the tests, observed a minute of silence for the death of the mother of the Vice President of the club, Alejandro Retolaza.
It was the emotional note of a day that also had its happiest and most fun part thanks to the crew of the Pazo de Cea, who sailed all the tests dressed as pirates and waving a pirate flag on their sailboat.

A great cover for women and for sailing… A cover that encourages us to continue working so that there are more and more women sailing and competing.
Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen was placed at the head of the Baitra J80 Winter League this Saturday after winning two of the three contested races
· The Alboroto led by the former champion of Spain in the Javier Aguado class was on the verge of victory and occupies the second position
The Marías of the Portuguese Manel Cunha is third in a competition that still has four days left to know its final outcome
The Okofen of Javier de la Gándara from Vigo was placed at the head of the Baitra J80 Winter League this Saturday after winning two of the three tests with which the competition was inaugurated. The crew came with a thorn in their side after having missed the Autumn League and convincingly demonstrated why they are one of the best teams in the running and one of the clear contenders for the final victory.
Those of De la Gándara haggled with ease and managed to get, in many moments, a significant distance from the rest of the fleet. In fact, in the first heat they crossed the finish line with great comfort separated from the rest.
Somewhat more complicated was the second test, in which they gave prominence to Alboroto, led by the former Spanish champion of the class, Javier Aguado. The sailboat was the fastest to take the buoys and to reach the finish line, winning the heat and leaving Okofen in second place.
But the Gándara crew was not willing to let the long-awaited victory slip away and took advantage of the third and last test of the day to sentence the classification with another first place. And so, with partial 1-2-1, it was how Okofen won the first victory of the Winter League, which the Monte Real Club de Yates organizes until next April thanks to the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales .
Along with the Okofen and the Alboroto, the other outstanding sailboat of the day was the Marías of the Portuguese Manel Cunha, who always remained very close to the first positions. They finished with results of 2-3-3 and third place in the provisional standings, but if they keep up their good work, they will undoubtedly be one of the crews to take into account in the coming days.
The Top-5 after this first day of competition is closed by Alejandra Suárez’s Cansino and Santiago Estévez’s Spaco, fourth and fifth respectively. The next appointment with the one-design winter league is on the 19th.
· The collaboration between the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Xunta de Galicia made it possible to launch the “Sailing against gender violence” program thanks to which 16 women and their children were able to sail in the bay of Baiona
· The activities carried out at the Sailing School of the Baiona club were aimed at reinforcing the confidence, self-esteem and decision-making capacity of these women
· The Minister of Equality of the Galician government, María Jesús Lorenzana, whose department financed this pioneering program in Galicia, recently visited the Monte Real facilities in Baiona
((For reasons of privacy and protection of the women who participate in the initiative, images of the activities carried out with them are not included in this news nor have they been distributed))
A total of 16 women victims of gender violence and 21 of their sons and daughters benefited, last year, from the program “Sailing against gender violence” , a pioneering program in Galicia promoted by the Monte Real Yacht Club and financed by the Xunta de Galicia through the Ministry of Equality.
The head of the regional department, María Jesús Lorenzana, recently visited the facilities of the Baion club to learn first-hand about the development, materials and infrastructure used in the activities, whose main objective was to strengthen confidence, self-esteem and decision-making capacity of these women.
To achieve this, specific resources were designed that sought to reduce the emotional impact on the victims, minimize their state of anxiety, achieve the maximum development of their personal, intellectual, social and emotional capacities; strengthen their self-esteem and resistance to adversity; and promote empathy, active listening and healthy relationships.
The sports practice carried out on the boats of the Monte Real Club de Yates also contributed to improving their physical health and allowed the enjoyment of their sons and daughters, for whom specific independent activities were launched, mainly aimed at giving a break to mothers and the achievement of greater autonomy on the part of the little ones.
The activities were carried out for 6 months between May and October 2021 and users of the Comprehensive Recovery Center of Santiago (CRI) and the Emergency Center for Victims of Gender Violence of Vigo (CEMVI) participated.
SAILING IN FEMALE IN THE MRCYB
The initiative “Candle against gender violence” is part of the program “Vela en feminine” of the Monte Real Club de Yates, which seeks to encourage, promote and spread the presence of women in the world of sailing; and that also has the financial support of the Xunta de Galicia.
With the aim of favoring equality between men and women in nautical practice, the Baiona club sent female crews to participate in some of the most important trophies in Galicia and Spain; He managed to get the Royal Galician Sailing Federation to create women’s and mixed prizes in the Galician A Dos Championship, prepared a team for the Women’s National Circuit and organized the final of the Women’s National League.
· After the suspension of the opening day due to lack of wind, the J80 fleet entered in the competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates seeks to debut this Saturday in Baiona
· The weather forecasts are quite good and if they do not suffer major changes for the start of the tests, they would allow the 17 sailboats in contention to inaugurate the classification
After the suspension of the opening day on January 22 due to lack of wind, the J80 fleet registered to participate in the Baitra J80 Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates will seek to debut this Saturday in Baiona.
The weather forecasts announce a northerly component wind with between 5 and 7 knots on average and peaks of up to 10; and, if they do not undergo major changes for the start of the tests, they would allow the 17 sailboats in contention to inaugurate the classification.
If everything goes according to plan, at three in the afternoon a regatta day will begin with three scheduled tests: three routes between buoys, of the windward-leeward type, with a double return.
In addition to competing in the heats, the crews will participate in informative briefings directed by the Olympic coach Carlos Llamas, who is in charge of preparing the Galician one-design fleet for the Spanish Championship and the World Championship of the class that will be held in Baiona on next September and in 2023.
In this new edition of the Baitra J80 Winter League, the Okofen of Javier de la Gándara, winner of the winter league in 2021; Manel Marías’s Marías, who won the Autumn League; the Rampage of Juan Carlos Ameneiro, who will lead this day by the former Spanish Champion of the Javier Aguado class; the Cansino by Alejandra Suárez, the Maija by Castor Alonso or the Spaco by Santiago Estévez, all from Monte Real; The Galera of the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña, the Due of the Real Club Náutico de Portosín, or the ¡Ay Carmela! by Juan Martínez Pazo, by Bouzas, among others.
· The lack of wind prevented the classification of the Baitra J80 Winter League from the Monte Real Club de Yates from opening this Saturday in Baiona
· The one-design fleet will return to the water next February 5 in the second of the six days scheduled in the competition
The lack of wind prevented the Galician J80 fleet from debuting this Saturday in the Baitra J80 Winter League, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales.
Although the regatta committee managed to start the first of the three tests scheduled to open the competition, the sailboats were only able to complete one of the two laps that included the task.
In the middle of the first lap the difficulties for the crews with roles and drops of wind in the offset area already began. Despite everything, most of the boats managed to go up to the next beacon area, but when they were about to start the second round, the situation became untenable and the committee decided to cancel the test.
The regatta was then put on standby waiting for the wind to enter with the direction and intensity necessary to resume the competition, but it was not possible and the fleet was forced to return to land without having been able to open markers.
The next appointment with the Baitra J80 Winter League is on February 5 with the second of the six days that will be in contention.
· The winter league for 8-meter monotypes is the first event in the Monte Real Club de Yates regatta calendar, which this year includes 12 competitions distributed between January and December
Nearly twenty sailboats will compete from this Saturday until April 2, the six days that include the championship sponsored by Baitra Accesorios Navales
In addition to the regattas and with the sights set on the Spanish and World Championships, which will be organized by the MRCYB, the days of regatta will also include group preparation, boat preparation and strategy briefings
The Monte Real Club de Yates inaugurates its 2022 sports calendar this Saturday with the celebration of the first day of the Baitra J80 Winter League. The 8-meter monotypes are once again the protagonists of a championship that will be held in six stages until next April.
With three races per day, the nearly twenty participating sailboats will compete in a total of 18 regattas, which may be of the windward-leeward type, with two upwind and two stern; or coastal, with routes to be determined each day of competition. In what all the days will coincide will be at the start time, at three in the afternoon; and in the location of the outlet, inside the Bay of Baiona.
In liza we will see about twenty boats, mainly from the Monte Real Club de Yates, which has the largest J80 fleet in Galicia; but also from Coruña (Miguel Fernández’s La Galera), Portosín (Rafael Blanco’s Due) and Bouzas (Juan Martínez Pazó’s ¡Ay Carmela!).
Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen and Manel Cunha’s Marías, both from the MRCYB, will go out on the water ready to revalidate their champion titles from the previous editions of the Winter League and the Autumn League, respectively. They will be seen with other crews that usually end up either on the podium or just touching it, such as Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, Alejandra Suárez’s Cansino, Castor Alonso’s Maija, Santiago Estévez’s Spaco, Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo or the Namaste by Luis de Mira.
In addition to the regattas, and with the sights set on the Spanish Championship of the class to be held in September in Baiona and the World Championship that Monte Real will organize in 2023, the regattas will include group training sessions, preparation of boats and strategy briefings before and after the competition. The goal is for the Galician fleet to arrive at the national and world events as prepared as possible.
Baitra repeats its sponsorship of the event for the second consecutive year, a company dedicated to the marketing and distribution of accessories and naval equipment aimed at the construction and repair of boats, both sports and professional.
The Baitra J80 Winter League is the first of the 12 competitions that Monte Real will organize this year in Baiona. The highlights of the season will arrive in May and September with the celebration of the 52 SUPER SERIES · Baiona Sailing Week and the Spanish J80 Championship. The Baionese club will also compete in the Galician A Dos Championship (June 11), the Final of the Women’s National Sailing League (October); and its four great classics: the Prince of Asturias Trophy (September 2-4) with the National Sailing Awards, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy (July 22-25), the Repsol Trophy (April 29-May 1) and the Comunica Trophy (April 23). · The club from Baiona is preparing to launch a sports season with competition, fun and entertainment as the main ingredients
· The arrival next May in Baiona of the prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES will undoubtedly be the nautical event of the year in Galicia
· Monte Real will also organize the J80 Spanish Championship and the Galician Two-Handed Championship in 2022
· The club’s four classics also return: the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, the Repsol Trophy and the Comunica Trophy
The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona is finalizing the details to start, in just a few days, its 2022 sports season, in which competition, fun and entertainment will be the main ingredients.
The most outstanding event on its calendar is, without a doubt, the celebration, next May, of the prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES , one of the most important nautical events in the world, considered the “Formula 1 of the sea” . From May 23 to 28, between 10 and 12 teams of more than 8 nationalities with sailors from 5 continents will compete in the Rías Baixas aboard unique boats with the most cutting-edge technology.
Another of the events that will focus the attention of sailing lovers in Galicia will be the Spanish Championship of the J80 class , which will be held in Baiona from September 15 to 18. The most important event of the 8 meters at a national level returns to Baiona four years after having been organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, which owns the most important fleet of these monotypes in the northwest of the peninsula.
The club chaired by José Luis Álvarez also repeats, in this case for the eleventh consecutive year, in the organization of the Galician A Two Championship , which on June 11 will bring together some of the most intrepid sailors in the community to prove their worth with crews reduced to the maximum.
In 2022, the club’s four great classics will also return: the Prince of Asturias Trophy , which will once again include the delivery of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards ; the Conde de Gondomar Trophy , with the legendary climb of almost 100 miles to Carrumeiro Chico; the Repsol Trophy , during the first weekend of May; and the Comunica Trophy , at the end of April.
There will also be 11 exclusive competition days for the J80, which will be divided into two leagues: the Baitra Winter League , from January to April; and the Fall League , from October to December.
After the successful participation of the previous edition, Monte Real will repeat the Route through the Rías Baixas , a non-competitive journey destined to travel the Camino de Santiago by sea and win the Jubilee. And this year, as a novelty, Monte Real will also organize a Laser class qualifier.
It will clearly be an intense year for the club from Baiona, in which, in addition to competition, fun and spectacle, there will also be a place for solidarity and social responsibility actions, most of them promoted through its School Sailing Adapted .
Monte Real will reaffirm, once again, its social commitment to people with disabilities, offering, throughout the year, courses and activities aimed at promoting their inclusion and allowing them to navigate under equal conditions. Since it was launched a decade ago, this section of the club has only grown, and what was initially limited to people with different disabilities (physical, sensory, intellectual or mental) has been extended to people elderly, children in care, children with behavior problems and women victims of gender violence.
The commitment to women will be another of the axes of the 2022 season of Monte Real, with various proposals to promote their participation in competitions and events. In addition, the club will once again organize the Final of the National Women’s Sailing League , which will be held next fall.
Light sailing and cruising courses within the framework of the MRCYB Sailing School , coaching and team building activities for groups and companies, and talks and clinics for sailors are other proposals offered by the Monte Real Yacht Club in what will be its first year as a member of the International Council of Yacht Clubs (ICOYC) , of which it has been a member since last December along with the 44 most prestigious clubs in the world.
