Aceites Abril achieves its sixth Conde de Gondomar Trophy in Baiona

· With the victory in this forty-seventh edition of the regatta, the boat skippered by the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez-Canal equals the record of victories of the José Luis Freire Pairo saga

· The teams from Monte Real Yacht Club Yess and Unus were the winners of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy in the Open A and B divisions

· The Deep Blue 2.1 and the Marcolfo, both competing under the banner of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, were the winners of the Erizana Trophy in ORC 0-1 and 3-5

· In J80 and Fígaros the victory went to Alboroto and Bouvento

· The 47th Conde de Gondomar Trophy was organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club with the sponsorship of Zelnova Zeltia and Banco Sabadell

Historical victory for Aceites Abril de Luis and Jorge Pérez-Canal in the forty-seventh edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia / Banco Sabadell Grand Prix. With the dispute over the last two batons of the competition, the boat led by the brothers from Ourense achieved its sixth title, equaling the record of victories held so far alone by José Luis Freire’s Pairo saga.

The fourth and last day of the event organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club once again summoned the more than forty boats to complete two windward-leeward format tests on the regatta course located in front of the Cíes Islands. With all the options open in practically all the participating categories, the fleet faced the end of the Conde with force and the Regatta Committee was able to comply with the planned program starting the competition after twelve noon.

Among the ORC teams who were playing for the Conde de Gondomar Trophy -for which both the last two batons and the Carrumeiro Chico challenge on Friday and the return to Ons on Sunday scored points-, the last two victories at stake were awarded to the Ifaclinic del Yate Clube do Porto, who with Joao Nuno Veloso had no rival on this last day in the waters of the Vigo estuary. The definitive victory and the long-awaited title of the Count of Gondomar was, however, for the Aceites Abril of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, who only had two second places to claim a comfortable victory with five and a half points over the second classified.

Already on the pontoons, Luis, the youngest of the Pérez-Canal brothers, highlighted the role of the crew as one of the keys to the milestone achieved with this sixth title in Baiona. “He is already the sixth Count of Gondomar and it is a luxury to have won it with this magnificent crew. We have been together for a lifetime and without a doubt the victory is thanks to them because they are the ones who have given us the victory. It is the best crew you can have and I congratulate them because they are fantastic“, he claimed.

Luis and Jorge Pérez-Canal, Eduardo Reguera, Pablo Iglesias, Carlos Sanmartín, Luis Sampedro, Pablo Espinosa, César Torné, Rafael Martínez-Almeida, Iago Carrera, Sebastián Martínez-Risco, Luis da Rocha and Juan de Cominges are the thirteen crew members who , aboard the Aceites Abril, have managed to match the number of titles in the saga of the Pairo owned by shipowner José Luis Freire.

From behind, second place went to Magical, also with a banner from Real Club Náutico de Vigo. A third and a fourth were the results of Julio Rodríguez’s team on this last day, finishing with a distance of two points over Alberto Moro’s Solventis (Monte Real Club de Yates), who closed the podium in third place.

In the Open A division, the conditions of the regatta field, which presented itself with a northwesterly wind of between eight and ten knots of intensity, favored the winner of the Carrumeiro stage, Yess de Rui Ramada (Monte Real Club de Yates), who scored his two last partial victories of the regatta to become the winner with a whopping ten points over his immediate rival, the Portuguese Racer de Januário Cruz, who took second place ahead of the also Portuguese team Five, skippered by Joao Tourigo.

In Open B , meanwhile, the local team commanded by Luis García, Unus, also closed a perfect Conde de Gondomar with plenty of victories in his locker. Behind Garcia’s, José Antonio Portas’s Narval finished seven and a half points representing the Club Náutico de Villagarcía and third was Jorge Carnero’s Ronáutica Marinas (Club Náutico San Telmo).

With respect to Hedgehog Trophy, in which the ORC, J80 and Fígaro fleets that disputed the coastal one on Saturday scored points, the clearest victory was that of Vigo’s Deep Blue 2.1 of Vicente Cid (Real Club Náutico de Vigo) in ORC 0-2, which the Count of Gondomar closed with four first positions in the four races completed. Those of Cid were followed by La Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez of the Club Náutico Castrelo de Miño in second place and Nahela by Víctor Álvarez, who were third representing the Club Náutico Alagua.

In ORC 3-4 , a great result also for Marcolfo of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo. The team led by Antonio Gómez managed to win the victory ahead of José Luis Ríos’ Bonaventure, also from the club from Vigo, and Alejandro Castro’s Esquío, from the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas, second and third respectively.

In J80 , a ninth for Alboroto in the first baton tightened the classification to the maximum and it was not until the last test when Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s men were able to certify the definitive victory of the regatta after leading from the first day of competition. They were followed on the podium by Santiago Estévez’s Spaco in second place -winners of the first round of the day- and Chisco Catalán’s Hull Maxx in third place overall.

In Fígaro , for its part, the last day saw Diego Pérez and David Fontán’s Bouvento recover the lead and become category winners ahead of Gemma González’s Erizana and Elena Raga’s Tutatis, who finished in second and third position. The Erizana also won the prize for the best female crew in the Figaro class.

With the day now over, the gardens of Monte Real hosted at 6:30 p.m. the awards ceremony for the winners of the edition, thus putting the finishing touch to one of the most emblematic regattas of the Baiona club and which once again featured the sponsorship of Zelnova Zeltia and Banco Sabadell.

The event was attended by the president of the club, José Luis Álvarez; the delegate of the Xunta in Vigo, Marta Fernández-Tapias; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; the deputy for cooperation, Santos Héctor; Adrián Salgado, Marketing Director of Zelnova Zeltia; Rafael Mato, regional director of Banco Sabadell; and Joaquín Martínez, commercial director of Volvo Autesa.

Now, Monte Real is preparing for the 37th Prince of Asturias Trophy, which will be held between September 2 and 4 and will include, as every year, the award ceremony for the prestigious Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards on the night of Saturday day three.

The return to Ons leaves the 47th Conde de Gondomar Trophy ready for sentencing

The penultimate day of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix summoned the entire fleet this Sunday to complete a round trip to Ons that caused changes in the general

April Oils, Yess, Deep Blue 2.1, Alboroto, and Erizana are the five boats that will defend the provisional leadership in the last day of regatta scheduled for this Monday from noon at the Cíes Islands anchorage

· The Magical by Julio Rodríguez of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo was the fastest to cover the 32-mile route, spending five hours and three minutes to complete it

Excitement on the penultimate day of the 47th Conde de Gondomar Trophy- Zelnova Zeltia and Banco Sabadell Grand Prix, in which the entire participating fleet completed the classic Tour of Ons. 32 miles in total than the fastest of the fleet, the Magical of Julio Rodríguez (Real Club Náutico de Vigo), completed in five hours and three minutes.

For the teams that are playing for the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, this Sunday’s test was the second of the four scored, along with the climb to Carrumeiro Chico and the two poles scheduled for Monday. Julio Rodríguez’s men were the first in real time and also in compensated mode, and managed to score the stage victory.

Thus, the team led by Julio Rodríguez rose one position and placed second overall in ORC, just two and a half points behind the defending champion, Aceites Abril, who will try to add their sixth victory to the Conde de Gondomar tomorrow. Behind, the third position of the provisional podium is now occupied by Alberto Moro’s Solventis, with a pendant from the Monte Real Yacht Club.

“The truth is that we are very happy with today’s regatta”, commented Andrés Gómez, Magical’s helmsman. “We started with a bit of a mess, but little by little we managed to accelerate until we overtook Aceites Abril and from then on we started stretching. There are still two races left tomorrow and it’s going to be complicated, the April is a tough rival but we’re going to try to do our best to win” .

On a day that started promptly at eleven in the morning, with a cloudy sky and a light wind from the southwest, the Open division was decided in favor of Yess de Rui Ramada (Monte Real Club de Yates), which continues to lead of the general classification with an advantage of five and a half points over the second classified, Unus de Luis García, also from Baiona, and nine over the Narval of the Club Náutico de Vilagarcía, skippered by José Antonio Portas, who were also second and third respectively in the return to Ons.

The return to Ons also scored for the Erizana Trophy, in which ORC, J80 and Fígaros compete. In ORC the Deep Blue 2.1 of Vicente Cid (Real Club Náutico de Vigo) did not disappoint. He returned to add a first place and was closer to the definitive victory. Following behind this Sunday were the two boats that also occupy second and third place overall: La Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez (Club Náutico de Castrelo de Miño) and Nahela by Club Náutico Alagua with Víctor Martínez at the helm.

In J80 there were no surprises and the victory was repeated by Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Fuss, who is showing off in this edition of the Conde. Second and third place in the stage were shared between Santiago Estévez’s Spaco and Rosario García’s Ferralemes, respectively. With these results, Ameneiro’s men consolidate their leadership in the general standings ahead of Spaco, who storm the podium in second place, and Chisco Catalán’s Hull Max, who sneaks into third place, unseating Cansino.

It was more difficult for the Figaros to complete the course, because around six in the afternoon the wind dropped completely and the fleet was forced to make every effort to cross the finish line. The first to do so was Gemma González’s Erizana, who managed to take the lead ahead of Diego González’s Bouvento, who is now second, and Ángela Rodríguez’s Serralleiras, who slipped into provisional third place after the third scored this Sunday .

For this Monday, the last day of the regatta, the Committee expects to complete two batons in front of the Cíes Islands, which will decide the winners of the two trophies that are still at stake: the Conde de Gondomar Trophy and the Erizana Trophy. The departure is scheduled for twelve noon, although everything will depend on the wind conditions.

Yess, Deep Blue, Alboroto and Bouvento, leaders of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy

· The Yess of the Portuguese Rui Ramada (MRCYB) was the fastest on the Corcubión rock climb and won the Carrumeiro Chico Trophy, one of the three up for grabs in this year’s edition of the Conde de gondomar

· The Deep Blue 2.1 of Vicente Cid (RCN Vigo) leads the Erizana Trophy, which opened this Saturday with a coastal regatta from Baiona to Subrido returning to the Cíes Islands

Manuel Blanco’s Salseiro (RCN A Coruña) was the fastest to complete the test and Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto (MRCYB) and Diego Pérez and David Fontán’s Bouvento were the best in the J80 and Fígaro classes

· The competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Zelnova Zeltia and Banco Sabadell crossed its equator and is now heading into its last two days of regattas in which three new races will be held

The boats of the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Real Club Náutico de Vigo are being protagonists of the 47th edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, which is being held these days in the Galician estuaries under the organization of the Baion club and with the sponsorship of Zelnova Zeltia and Banco Sabadell.

After the celebration of the first two days of tests, three sailboats from Baiona and one from Vigo were placed at the head of the classification of the different classes of the competition, in which three trophies are at stake: the Trofeo Carrumeiro Chico, the Trofeo Hedgehog and the Count of Gondomar Trophy.

The Trofeo Carrumeiro Chico , which ended this Saturday after more than 20 hours of round trip navigation between Baiona and the mythical rock of Corcubión, closed with the final victory of the Yess of the Portuguese Rui Ramada. The Monte Real boat was the fastest to complete the test and the wide advantage it had over the rest of the boats allowed it to also win the overall victory once the times had been compensated.

The Yess won everything that could be won in the Open class, in which it competed, and the novelty introduced this year in the Conde de Gondomar. From the organization they decided to include this category to encourage the Galician fleet to participate in the great offshore regatta of Galicia, and this favored the return to competition of smaller boats such as the Unus, owned by Luis García Trigo, which had been unable for years take part.

They broke the spinnaker and had a hard time finishing the test due to the lack of wind in the arrival area, but they put in a brilliant performance that allowed them to rise to third place in the Open standings, behind Txole, which came second. One of its crew members, Carlos Quintás, expressed his satisfaction at having been able to return to “one of the toughest tests but also one of the most beautiful of those held in Galicia” , he assured.

In the ORC class of the Carrumeiro, the podium boxes went to the three boats that gave the regatta the most excitement, sailing very close and without giving each other a break: the Aceites Abril of the Pérez Canal brothers, the Solventis of Alberto Moro , and Julio Rodríguez’s Magical.

The second of the trophies at stake, the Erizana Trophy , came to the fore this Saturday with a coastal regatta in which the boats that did not go up to the Carrumeiro on Friday participated. They left at eleven o’clock from the bay of Baiona and sailed to Subrido passing through Carallones, la Negra and Bondaña, to finish off the Cíes. It was an easy and fast regatta, which Manuel Blanco’s Salseiro (RCN A Coruña) completed in just over three hours.

After compensating for the times, the stage victory in the ORC class went to Deep Blue 2.1 of Vicente Cid (RCN Vigo), who beat La Burla Negra of Juan José Martínez (CN Castrelo de Miño) and Nahela of Víctor Álvarez ( CD Alagua), second and third respectively.

In the J80 class, the best team was Alboroto, led by Juan Carlos Ameneiro, who was accompanied by his usual crew members: the former Spanish class champion, Javier Aguado; Juan Lake and Javier Lake.

Once on land, Ameneiro made a good balance of a regatta in which they participate with the aim of winning “and also to prepare for the Prince of Asturias Trophy and the Spanish Championship that will be held in September in Baiona and, above all, for the great event that will be the class world championship, which will also be held in Baiona in 2023”.

In the second position of the J80 was another boat from the MRCYB, the Cansino de Alejandra Suárez; and the third place went to the RCN of Portosín, by the Due of Rafael Blanco.

In the Figaros competition, which, like the J80s, competed in real time, the provisional podium was made up of Diego Pérez and David Fontán’s Bouvento, in first position; Gemma González’s Erizana, second; and Elena Raga’s Tutatis in third place.

With the celebration, on Friday, of the Carrumeiro challenge and the dispute, this Saturday, of the coastal one for the rest of the boats that had not yet debuted in the competition, the entire fleet has already inaugurated markers and the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Grand Prix Zelnova Zeltia / Banco Sabadell crosses its equator.

There are only two days and three tests ahead of us: the return to Ons, this Sunday from eleven o’clock; and two canes on Monday from noon. The weather forecast is good for both days and everything indicates that the planned program can be completed without problems.

The 47th Conde de Gondomar Trophy is sponsored by Zelnova Zeltia and Banco Sabadell; and has the special collaboration of the Pontevedra Provincial Council. The Xunta de Galicia, the Baiona city council, the Volvo Autesa de Vigo dealer, the Martin Miller premium gin, the Terras Gauda winery and the Musto nautical clothing brand also collaborate in the competition.

The Yess, first in the Carrumeiro

Rui Ramada’s Yess met all expectations and was the first sailboat to reach and tack the Carrumeiro Chico in the inaugural test of the 47th Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia / Banco Sabadell Grand Prix

· The sailboat of the Monte Real Club de Yates is fighting against itself at this time to reach Baiona as soon as possible and try to break the record of the event that has remained unbeaten since 2011

Solventis by Alberto Moro, Aceites Abril by the Pérez Canal brothers and Magical by Julio Rodríguez maintained an exciting heads-up throughout the event

· The competition continues this Saturday with the second day of tests in which the rest of the fleet will compete in a coastal regatta along the Vigo estuary

Rui Ramada’s Yess fulfilled all the forecasts and expectations placed on it and was the first sailboat to reach and turn the Carrumeiro Chico in the inaugural test of the 47th Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix, which came on stage this Friday in Galicia.

The 63-foot Hanse (just over 19 meters), armed and skippered by the experienced Portuguese navigator, and manned by Pedro Pinto, Nuno Campos, Pedro Azevedo and Óscar Peixoto), rounded the mythical rock of Corcubión at 18:15: 07, seven and a quarter hours after leaving Baiona.

They chose a coastal navigation, stuck to land. They took advantage of the thermals of the estuaries and the result was satisfactory, managing to maintain an almost constant speed of between 8.5 and 9 knots. “Approaching land was, without a doubt, the best decision” , declared Rui Ramada after completing the ascent to the mythical rock. “At times we tried to move away and go a bit further out, but the wind was not so good and we decided to return to the track closer to the coast, which worked very well for us” .

In the second half of the test, which the Yess will take a few hours to complete, the direction of the wind is being key for the boat. With the wind blowing from the north and wearing an asymmetrical spinnaker, the boat will not reach the full speed that a northeast or northwest wind could offer them, and this could disadvantage them with respect to other crews.

In spite of everything, the separation of the Yess from the rest of the fleet is very great and right now it is only fighting against itself, to try to reach Baiona before 22:56, which would allow it to beat the stage record. del Carrumeiro, which Cenor & de Dietrich has held since 2011.

The second crew to reach the Corcubión rock was that of the Solventis, led by Alberto Moro, also from the Monte Real Club de Yates. He did it at 19:39:51, almost an hour and a half after the Yess. Throughout the tour, from the very beginning of the test, he maintained a tough hand in hand with the April Oils, of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal; and Julio Rodríguez’s Magical; and finally managed to overtake them with a certain margin before reaching the key point of Carrumeiro.

The three are, without a doubt, clear contenders for the final victory in this edition of the Count of Gondomar; and all of them, like the Yess, chose to sail within the Cíes archipelago. Only two boats chose the outer layout; the Portuguese Five, by Joao Tourigo; and the Txole, by Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, who defended the choice by assuring that “the wind was well established on the outside and there was good pressure, the winds on the inside being more doubtful” .

Of the 13 boats registered to participate in what is considered the queen of the trophy, only 11 finally came out to compete. The fastest boats are expected to complete the course around midnight and the race could be finished by early morning, or even Saturday morning.

It will be then when the names of the winners will be known, both in real time and in compensated time, in the different classes in contention, although for many of the participants, the real prize is to be able to complete the deep-sea regatta par excellence in Galicia and one of the the most attractive long-distance events on the Spanish nautical scene.

After the Carrumeiro Chico stage, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia / Banco Sabadell Grand Prix still has four races ahead of it. This Saturday there will be a coastal race along the Vigo estuary, on Sunday the classic Vuelta a Ons; and on Monday, the last day of competition, two poles at the Cíes anchorage.

· Sanxenxo, Vilagarcía, Portosín, Castrelo de Miño, Tui, A Guarda, Portosín, Porto or Povoa de Varzim are some of the origins of the participating crews, Baiona and Vigo being the ones that will have the greatest representation

More than 40 registered boats, 4 days of competition, 5 tests and 3 trophies at stake. This is how the forty-seventh edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia / Banco Sabadell Grand Prix is presented, the historic regatta of the Monte Real Club de Yates that raises the curtain this Friday in Galicia.

It will do so, as has become a tradition, with the mythical ascent to Carrumeiro Chico , almost 100 miles away . This route to the rock of Corcubión is one of the longest of the regatta season in Galicia, the great challenge of the trophy and the one in charge of opening the regatta program. And this year comes with news, as there will be two different classes: ORC and Open.

In the last edition, the fastest boat to complete the test was Julio Rodríguez’s Magical. He crossed the finish line after almost 13 hours (12 hours and 55 minutes) of navigation, and 21 minutes before Aceites Abril, who came second (21 minutes later) and ended up taking the stage victory thanks to time compensation .

Both crews, companions of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, are two of the 13 that have already confirmed their participation in this year’s Carrumeiro challenge , which will take place from eleven in the morning. We will also see in the water the largest ship in the entire fleet of the Count, the Yess de Rui Ramada (63 feet/19 meters), the Txole de Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui (MRCYB), the Narval de José Antonio Portas (CN Vilagarcía), the Marine Ronautics by Joaquín Carneiro (CN San Telmo) or the Portuguese Five by Joao Tourigo and Maximus by Jorge Leite, among others.

The boat that wins this stage will win the Carrumeiro Chico Trophy, one of three that includes this year’s Zelnova Zeltia / Banco Sabadell Grand Prix . The other two trophies in contention are the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, which includes the Carrumeiro test, the return to Ons and two walking sticks; and the Conde de Gondomar – Erizana Trophy, in which they will score a coastal regatta, the return to Ons and two poles.

There will thus be five tests in four days of competition for the four categories in contention: ORC, Open, J80 and Fígaros. The first day, reserved for sailing to Carrumeiro Chico, will be followed by a coastal regatta on Saturday the 23rd starting at noon; the return to Ons on Sunday 24 from eleven in the morning; and two canes (windward/leeward) on Monday 25 from twelve noon. That last day, a holiday in Galicia, the prizes will be awarded to the winners of the competition in a ceremony scheduled for half past six in the afternoon in the gardens of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

Sanxenxo, Vilagarcía, Portosín, Castrelo de Miño, Tui, A Guarda or Portosín, from Galicia; and Porto or Povoa de Varzim, from Portugal; are some of the origins of the participating crews , Baiona and Vigo being the ones that will have a greater representation of sailboats in the competition.

The boats of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo will try to repeat the success achieved in the previous edition , in which they were winners in practically all categories. They took the podium of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy (April Oils, Marnatura and Magical), won in real time and compensated the climb to Carrumeiro (Magical and April Oils) and won the Erizana Trophy (Deep Blue).

In a special way, many of the sights will be set on the performance of the April Oils of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, who aspires to achieve his sixth victory in the Conde de Gondomar. His triumph in 2021 allowed him to overcome the four victories of the historic Ardora (Paz Andrade), Castrosúa (Willy Alonso) and Alaxe (Julio Martínez Gil); but the Ourensanos still have to win one more edition to tie (and two more editions to overcome) the different Pairos led by José Luis Freire, who have accumulated 6 wins.

In the official presentation of the competition held this Thursday at the Monte Real Yacht Club, in addition to the president of the club, José Luis Álvarez; the CEO of Zelnova Zeltia, Juan Carlos Ameneiro; the institutional director of SabadellGallego, Adolfo García Ciaño; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; the Deputy for Sports of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez; the territorial delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Vigo, Marta Fernández-Tapias; and the Commodore of the MRCYB, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui.

47 uninterrupted years of success THE DECLARATIONS

“We have been celebrating this great regatta successfully and without interruption for 47 years and for Monte Real it is a great pride to be able to continue summoning and gathering in the Rías Baixas the great fleet of boats and crews that year after year are encouraged to participate in the It is the high-altitude regatta par excellence in Galicia” – José Luis Álvarez, president of the MRCYB

“This will be the second consecutive year in which we have collaborated in a regatta that supports maritime culture, promotes nautical tourism and promotes the sport of sailing. At Zelnova Zeltia we are proud to once again be part of this family, the Real Club de Yates family, with which we share values of effort, teamwork, tradition and competitiveness and without which it would be impossible to carry out this regatta” – Juan Carlos Ameneiro, CEO of Zelnova Zeltia

“The 29 boats that set sail in 1976 for the Cabo Silleiro area in the first edition of the Conde de Gondomar had less technology than the current ones, but the collaboration between the men who make up the crews remains the same; and values such as solidarity and sportsmanship as well. And that is what unites us with this regatta. At Banco Sabadell we are a company and we want to support companies in Galicia. Decisions are made here, by professionals from here, and that is why we are present in the social life of this land” – Adolfo García Ciaño, Institutional Director of SabadellGallego

“If this regatta is special, it is not only because of the quality of the crews that participate in it, nor because of the 47 years that it has been held. It is also due to the human quality of all the people who are involved in its organization and for the support of two large companies that, before and now, and in difficult times, have wanted and have known how to support sport, as we have done since Provincial Council of Pontevedra. Thanks to them and thanks to Monte Real this great event can continue celebrating years” – Gorka Gómez – Deputy for Sports of the Pontevedra Provincial Council

“The Count of Gondomar is one of the most important competitions on the national scene and the most important offshore regatta in Galicia. There are plenty of reasons for this appointment, which crosses borders, to be one of the most anticipated on the Galician calendar. It is one of the emblems of our sports culture and a great challenge for the crews. From a technical point of view, the mythical ascent to Carrumeiro Chico is an exciting navigation; and at a competitive level, we will all be waiting to see if the test record is broken” – Marta Fernández-Tapias – Delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in Vigo

“This club is history and Baiona is history, especially history related to the sea. And what we are presenting today is precisely a new edition of a historic regatta, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, organized by the best sailing club in the world. A regatta that once again promotes sport and tourism and that continues to value our town. On behalf of the entire council, I want to welcome each and every one of the participants, wish them the best of luck and a very good wind during the weekend”– Carlos Gómez – Mayor of Baiona

“This year we have introduced some changes in the regatta with the aim of preserving the essence of the competition. What we want is to achieve a greater involvement of the crews and a greater participation of boats, and I think that with the modifications of this 2022 we will achieve it “ – Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui – Commodore of the MRCYB

The Monte Real Yacht Club will fill 2022 with competition, fun and spectacle

· The club from Baiona is preparing to launch a sports season with competition, fun and entertainment as the main ingredients

· The arrival next May in Baiona of the prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES will undoubtedly be the nautical event of the year in Galicia

· Monte Real will also organize the J80 Spanish Championship and the Galician Two-Handed Championship in 2022

· The club’s four classics also return: the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, the Repsol Trophy and the Comunica Trophy

The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona is finalizing the details to start, in just a few days, its 2022 sports season, in which competition, fun and entertainment will be the main ingredients.

The most outstanding event on its calendar is, without a doubt, the celebration, next May, of the prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES , one of the most important nautical events in the world, considered the “Formula 1 of the sea” . From May 23 to 28, between 10 and 12 teams of more than 8 nationalities with sailors from 5 continents will compete in the Rías Baixas aboard unique boats with the most cutting-edge technology.

Another of the events that will focus the attention of sailing lovers in Galicia will be the Spanish Championship of the J80 class , which will be held in Baiona from September 15 to 18. The most important event of the 8 meters at a national level returns to Baiona four years after having been organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, which owns the most important fleet of these monotypes in the northwest of the peninsula.

The club chaired by José Luis Álvarez also repeats, in this case for the eleventh consecutive year, in the organization of the Galician A Two Championship , which on June 11 will bring together some of the most intrepid sailors in the community to prove their worth with crews reduced to the maximum.

In 2022, the club’s four great classics will also return: the Prince of Asturias Trophy , which will once again include the delivery of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards ; the Conde de Gondomar Trophy , with the legendary climb of almost 100 miles to Carrumeiro Chico; the Repsol Trophy , during the first weekend of May; and the Comunica Trophy , at the end of April.

There will also be 11 exclusive competition days for the J80, which will be divided into two leagues: the Baitra Winter League , from January to April; and the Fall League , from October to December.

After the successful participation of the previous edition, Monte Real will repeat the Route through the Rías Baixas , a non-competitive journey destined to travel the Camino de Santiago by sea and win the Jubilee. And this year, as a novelty, Monte Real will also organize a Laser class qualifier.

It will clearly be an intense year for the club from Baiona, in which, in addition to competition, fun and spectacle, there will also be a place for solidarity and social responsibility actions, most of them promoted through its School Sailing Adapted .

Monte Real will reaffirm, once again, its social commitment to people with disabilities, offering, throughout the year, courses and activities aimed at promoting their inclusion and allowing them to navigate under equal conditions. Since it was launched a decade ago, this section of the club has only grown, and what was initially limited to people with different disabilities (physical, sensory, intellectual or mental) has been extended to people elderly, children in care, children with behavior problems and women victims of gender violence.

The commitment to women will be another of the axes of the 2022 season of Monte Real, with various proposals to promote their participation in competitions and events. In addition, the club will once again organize the Final of the National Women’s Sailing League , which will be held next fall.

Light sailing and cruising courses within the framework of the MRCYB Sailing School , coaching and team building activities for groups and companies, and talks and clinics for sailors are other proposals offered by the Monte Real Yacht Club in what will be its first year as a member of the International Council of Yacht Clubs (ICOYC) , of which it has been a member since last December along with the 44 most prestigious clubs in the world.

April Oils wins its fifth Conde de Gondomar Trophy

· The team led by Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal achieves its fifth victory in the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell del Monte Real Club de Yates Grand Prix

· The Real Club Náutico de Vigo signed fully in the competition with three boats on the podium of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy (Aceites Abril, Pairo Marnatura and Magical) and the real-time victory of Magical on the Carrumeiro climb

· The Deep Blue 2.1 revalidated the title of winner of the Erizana Trophy in the ORC class, in the Open it won the Ladeira and in J80 and Fígaros the victories went to Ifaclinic and Ladeira

· After the celebration of the Count of Gondomar, the Monte Real Yacht Club is now preparing for its next major competition: the Prince of Asturias Trophy to be held on September 3, 4 and 5

The Aceites Abril, skippered by Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, won the forty-sixth edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix after sealing a perfect weekend that allowed the Real Club Náutico de Vigo team to add their fifth victory in the emblematic regatta with an advantage of five points over the second classified.

The third and last day held this Sunday dawned grey, with some rain and hardly any wind both in the Bay of Baiona and in the regatta course located in front of the Cíes Islands. With a first postponement on land of up to two hours over the scheduled time -12 noon- the Regatta Committee made the decision to take the fleet out into the water after one in the afternoon with the aim of trying to complete at least one leg .

Finally, at the edge of the deadline and with about five knots of wind from the northwest, the participants heard the starting gun of the only windward-leeward format test that could be held. A regatta in which Eolo did not make it easy for the participants, with roles and a drop in intensity in the final stretch that forced the Committee to shorten the sleeve.

Among the ORC teams that competed for the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, the last regatta was awarded to Aceites Abril, who also won the great general victory, becoming the brand new winner of the event.

With this victory, the team led by brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal now has a total of five wins at the Conde de Gondomar, beating Paz Andrade’s Ardora, Willy Alonso’s Castrosúa and Julio Martínez Gil’s Alaxe, and remaining just one title away from the team that holds the highest number of awards so far, José Luis Freire’s Pairo.

Behind Aceites Abril, second place went to José Luis Freire’s Pairo Marnatura, with the young Luis Bugallo at the controls; and the third position was taken by Julio Rodríguez’s Magical, who was also the real-time winner of the Carrumeiro stage. The boat from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo used a total of twelve hours and fifty-five minutes to cover the 94-mile route, remaining just over two minutes from the Pérez Canal after the compensation of times.

At the end of the test, Luis Pérez Canal was very happy with the victory. “My brother and I -he assured- We have been going up the Carrumeiro for 38 years with a crew of friends who have known each other forever. In fact, our team has been sailing together for an average of 30 years, which is a lifetime”. The Ourense patron highlighted the victory at the Conde as the first great victory of the season. “We are going to try to win all the races we can -he said- but the most important thing for us is to enjoy ourselves and have a good time” .

In the Erizana Trophy, in which the boats that did not go up to the Carrumeiro scored points, the second day caused a turnaround in the general with respect to the first stage. Vicente Cid’s Deep Blue 2.1 (RCN Vigo), who was second yesterday, scored a first today that allowed him to revalidate the ORC victory of the last edition. They were followed in the box by La Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez (CN Castrelo de Miño) in second position and Nahela by Víctor Manuel Álvarez in third place overall.

In the Open, Albarellos fell from the lead to second place in the table, giving victory to Ladeira de Elena Raga (MRCYB). Silleiro de Paula Rey (MRCYB) closed the podium.

Less things changed for the J80 monotypes, among which Joao Allen’s Ifaclinic (MRCYB) was the most outstanding and managed to proclaim itself the winner ahead of Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto (MRCYB) and Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva, second and third respectively.

As for the Fígaros fleet, which also competed in the Open division, the best result was that of Ladeira, followed by Silleiro and Óscar Comesaña’s Bouvento, all representing Monte Real.

Lastly, within the Women’s Sailing project of the Baiona club to try to promote the role of women in the sport of sailing in Galicia, a prize was awarded to the best female crew in the competition, which went to Silleiro , led by Paula Rey.

With the day already finished, the gardens of Monte Real welcomed the delivery of trophies to the winners of the edition. Those in charge of distributing the awards were the president of the club, José Luis Álvarez; the Provincial Deputy for Sports, Gorka Gómez; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; and the Regional Director of Southern Galicia of Banco Sabadell, Adolfo García-Ciaño; and the Marketing Director of Zelnova Zeltia, Adrián Salgado, sponsors of the event.

In the 46th Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix, the Diputación de Pontevedra, the Xunta de Galicia through Deporte Galego, Volvo Autesa, Terras Gauda and Martin Miller also collaborated.

After putting an end to the competition, the Monte Real Club de Yates is now preparing for its other great event of the season, the Prince of Asturias Trophy, which will be held on September 3, 4 and 5. It will include, as usual, the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards ceremony and, this year, the silver jubilee of the Ladies Cup, the women’s competition that celebrates its 25th anniversary.

The Count of Gondomar brings to the stage the great test of the Carrumeiro Chico

The 100-mile round-trip challenge between Baiona and Carrumeiro Chico inaugurates this Friday the forty-sixth edition of the competition

April, Pairo, Magical or Solventis oils are some of the contenders for victory in the star test of the Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix

· The departure will be given at 11 in the morning from the interior of the bay of Baiona and the end is not expected until well into the morning

The forty-sixth edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, brings to the stage this Friday on its opening day the great test of the Carrumeiro Chico, a regatta close to 100 miles considered as one of the most complex sailing crossings in Galicia.

Created in 1981 from an idea by Fernando García Tobío and in honor of Jesús Valverde, the race celebrates 40 years of life with more validity than ever, since there are many who aspire to achieve the record of the regatta, which has remained intact since 2011. That year, the Cenor & De Dietrich, a Farr 50 from the Real Club de Regatas Galicia led by Martín Bermúdez de la Puente, completed the journey in 11 hours, 56 minutes and 57 seconds, a mark that has not been broken since then.

Regardless of what happens in this edition, what is clear is that the Carrumeiro Chico test is quite a navigation challenge and one of the most exciting tests of the Spanish sailing season. The round trip regatta between Baiona and the lighthouse located in the Corcubión estuary will begin, if the weather permits, at 11 in the morning, with the start honk from inside the Bay of Baiona.

From then on, the sailboats that will dare with the test will head north along a route not marked in advance. The crews will be able to choose to sail closer to the land or more open towards the sea, outside the Cíes and Ons archipelagos.

In the last edition of the competition, the Portuguese skipper Rui Ramada and his crew, aboard the Swan 45 Yess Too, were the first to reach the Carrumeiro, eight hours after leaving Baiona. They were the fastest (they had already achieved it in 2019), but the time compensation gave the stage victory to Magical de Julio Rodríguez, who would also win the final victory of the Conde de Gondomar in 2020.

On this occasion, the Portuguese from Ramada will not go out on the water, but we will see the Magical from Vigo, trying to defend their title. In front of them, some of the most outstanding teams of the current Galician nautical scene, such as the Aceites Abril of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal; the Marías of the Portuguese Manel Marías; Alberto Moro’s Solventis, with Manuel “Malalo” Bermúdez de Castro at the wheel; the Sea of Frades Marine Ronautics by Jorge Carneiro; or Corsair by Jorge Durán, from Vilagarcía.

José Luis Freire’s Pairo, the owner and skipper with the highest number of wins at the Conde de Gondomar, will also enter the competition. Add a total of 6: three in the eighties (1983, 1984 and 1988) and another three in the first years of the new millennium (2003, 2007 and 2009). At the controls of his boat, one of his trusted men, the young Luis Bugallo, who has already completed the Carrumeiro stage with very good times on several occasions.

The 46th edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix will last for three days, from Friday to Sunday. The development of the first two stages (Carrumeiro test, on Friday 23; and Ons test, on Saturday 24), can be followed live through the Monte Real Club de Yates website , at the following link:

LIVE FOLLOW-UP SECOND RACE 46th COUNT OF GONDOMAR TROPHY BAIONA – ONS – BAIONA

On Saturday, July 24, starting at 12:00 , the second stage of the 46th Conde de Gondomar – Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix will be held, and it can be followed live from here:

The Conde de Gondomar Trophy returns

· Between July 23 and 25, the forty-sixth edition of the high-altitude regatta par excellence in Galicia will be held, disputed without interruption since 1976

Some 40 boats will be measured in three days of regattas that will include two medium and long distance courses and two technical tests in the Rías Baixas

· One more year on the competition program is the mythical route between Baiona and Carrumeiro Chico, in Corcubión, close to 100 miles

· The nautical event enters the scene under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club and with the sponsorship of the tandem Zelnova Zeltia and Banco Sabadell

In just three days, the forty-sixth edition of one of the longest-running and most charismatic regattas on the Spanish nautical scene will begin in Galicia, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, which the Monte Real Yacht Club is bringing to the stage in 2021 under the name of Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prize in honor of the tandem of sponsors.

From July 23 to 25, some of the best boats and the most outstanding skippers will participate in the deep-sea regatta par excellence in Galicia, a test that has not lost its pull over the years and that hopes to bring together some 40 boats in the Rías Baixas, attracted by a of the most exciting current sailing competitions and the oldest of the historic Monte Real.

At the official presentation of the trophy, held this Tuesday in Baiona, the president of the yacht club, José Luis Álvarez , predicted a great success for the event because “Its main attractions remain: the mythical ascent to the Carrumeiro Chico, its celebration around July 25 (Galicia’s big day) and the participation of some of the best crews in the country” . Álvarez also highlighted the alliance between the two large companies – Zelnova Zeltia and Banco Sabadell – which have come together to sponsor the competition “thus clearly expressing their commitment to the sport of sailing” .

After a previous day, the Thursday 22 , intended to finalize preparations, close registrations, make reviews and deliver instructions, the 46th Conde de Gondomar Trophy will begin on Friday 23rd , at eleven o’clock in the morning, with what is considered the great test of the competition, the mythical Baiona-Carrumeiro Chico-Baiona route, close to 100 miles away.

Although at first the possibility of introducing changes in the test between Baiona and the Carrumeiro Chico (dividing it into two stages with an intermediate stop in Portosín to make it more accessible to smaller boats), the club finally decided to meet the request of the shipowners who asked to keep the route intact. “What we were looking for with this possible modification -says the Commodore of Monte Real, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui- it was to open the event to more crews that could venture with a shorter distance regatta, but we were also clear that this would imply a loss of attractiveness for the star event of the competition; and after evaluating it in the club and consulting with skippers and owners, we decided to keep the traditional route”.

After the opening day and the navigation to the Carrumeiro (Conde de Gondomar Regatta), Saturday 24 will feature the Erizana Regatta, in which the rest of the sailboats will participate. It will start at 12 noon and, depending on the weather conditions, the crews will be able to race around the Ons archipelago (32 miles) or the Baiona-Camouco-Baiona route (29 miles).

On Sunday 25 , Galicia’s big day, the decisive stage of the competition will take place. Two windward-leeward technical tests at the Cíes Islands anchorage will decide the winners of the fortieth edition of the trophy, who will receive their awards at the awards ceremony scheduled that same day at half past six in the afternoon.

The event is expected to be attended by the CEO of Zelnova Zeltia , Pedro González, who this Wednesday, at the official presentation of the competition, thanked Monte Real for the opportunity to collaborate with the trophy “linking our corporate image with the values of sport and more specifically with those of sailing, highlighting teamwork, effort, tradition and competitiveness, all of them -he said- closely linked to our vision and way of understanding the business world in the Zelnova Zeltia Group” .

The director general of SabadellGallego , Pablo Junceda, also had an impact on this idea, assuring that the Count of Gondomar unites “the culture of the sea, the commitment to teamwork and overcoming to win, values that are also committed to -said- at Banco Sabadell”. “We are a company, we support Galician companies and we are present in the social life of this land”Junceda concluded.

Along with González and Junceda, as sponsors of the competition, the local, provincial and regional administrations were also represented at the official presentation of the event.

From Baiona, the deputy mayor of the fishing village, Óscar Martínez, thanked the work of Monte Real during this year and the previous one. “You are the representative of Baionese sport and you make Baiona cross our borders and reach an international level. We know that last year it was very difficult to maintain the activity, and you did it, and for that you deserve applause and that we thank you” , he said.

For the Deputy for Tourism of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Ana Laura Iglesias “We are proud that tests like this are held in our province, because they give us the opportunity to show how incredible our estuaries are, and everything that people can see, do and enjoy in them” .

The General Secretary for Sport of the Xunta de Galicia said that “for the Xunta de Galicia the nautical sector is a strategic sector and, although it is deeply rooted in the essence of our people, we always talk about its great growth potential” . According to José Ramón Lete Lasa “The world of sailing is in excellent health, with 2,000 licenses and being one of the sports modalities that has given us the most success. Glad to hear it -he went on to say- that the Conde de Gondomar Trophy has been held uninterruptedly during these 46 editions, and the fact is that the sport of sailing is, without a doubt, a safe sport”.

Although the registration period is not yet closed and several days ahead it is difficult to specify a final number of participants, from the organization they hope to have about 40 boats. Among them there will be a team of women from the Monte Real Club de Yates Women’s Sailing project, with which the club seeks to promote the presence of women in nautical competitions; and they will be, almost in all probability, the winners of the last edition.

in 2020, within the framework of a COVID scenario, the Count of Gondomar was celebrated with extensive security measures and the Magical by Julio Rodríguez, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo (grand prize of the trophy), took the laurels; Yess Too by Rui Ramada, from the Monte Real Club de Yates (winner of the Carrumeiro stage in real time); the Deep Blue 2.0 of Vicente Cid, of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo (gold in the Erizana Regatta); Juan Ameneiro’s Rampage (number one in the J80 class); and the Serralleiras of Patricio de Haz (leader among the Figaros).

REPORT: 46 years of high-altitude sailing on Monte Real

Created in 1976 by the Monte Real Club de Yates and disputed without interruption since then, the Conde de Gondomar has established itself over the years as one of the most charismatic regattas on the Spanish nautical scene, with a history full of great names in sailing in Galicia that should not be forgotten, and one of the most exciting tests of Atlantic sailing: the Baiona-Carrumeiro Chico-Baiona, almost 100 miles. In 2020 not even COVID19 could stop it and in 2021 it will celebrate its forty-sixth edition in Baiona under the name of Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix. It will be on July 23, 24 and 25.

Report by Rosana Calvo, head of communication at the MRCYB

Although the history of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy begins to be written in 1976, with the birth of the competition, we must go back several centuries to discover the true origin of its name, which arises from an alleged tribute to the figure of Diego Sarmiento de Acuña, first Count of Gondomar.

Son of the governor of Galicia, in military command of the Portuguese border and the Galician coast, Sarmiento was the key figure in the 5,000-man army who, despite being hastily recruited, managed to contain the attack that the most famous pirate of history, Francis Drake, was going to perpetrate against Baiona.

On October 8, 1585, the Count of Gondomar signed one of the most important chapters in the history of the Galician fishing village, forcing the withdrawal of the 30 ships and 1,500 men with which Drake intended to take over the town, and he was named “Governor of the war people of Baiona and the Castle of Monterreal” .

The Count of Gondomar was thus forever linked to the Monte Real peninsula, where the Parador Nacional is located today, which also bears his name; and the Monte Real Club de Yates, which in 1976 decided to baptize the Conde de Gondomar Trophy for a race that, over the years, would become the deep-sea regatta par excellence in Galicia.

Thus was born one of the most important competitions on the Spanish nautical scene, under the mandate of Rafael Olmedo Limeses as president of the club; and with Admiral Rafael Lorenzo (Commodore), Humberto Cervera “Piruchi” (sailing delegate) and Alfonso Paz Andrade, as key figures in its creation; along with Jesús Valverde, José Ramón Fontán, José de la Gándara and Rui Moreira.

On August 19 of that year, 29 boats accepted the challenge and set sail for the Cabo Silleiro area, where an Olympic triangle was scheduled to be held, but in the end it did not take place due to fog. The second of the three scheduled tests, a route between Baiona and Muros, was also suspended, this time due to lack of wind; and the premiere of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy was reduced to a single test that won the “Ardora” (Contention 33) by Alfonso Paz Andrade and Julio Babé, skippered by Gonzalo Romero.

It was the first of the four consecutive victories that the “Ardora” would chain in the first four editions of the Conde de Gondomar, taking among its crew sailing history in Galicia such as Fernando Massó or Gonzalo Romero.

Roll of Honor of the first winners of the Count of Gondomar

In 1980, the competition introduces changes to the layouts that had been initially designed, with a new 120-mile test between Baiona-Povoa de Varzim-Baiona, which is added to the Olympic triangle and an average regatta with a figure-nine route between the Cies and Ons Islands. The victory went to the Irish “Moonduster” (Swan 441), owned by Dennis Doyle, who had arrived in Galicia with the Lymington-Baiona regatta and decided to make his debut in the Conde as well.

In 1981 a new modification in the routes takes place. From an idea by Fernando García Tobío (of the club’s Regatta Committee together with Alfonso Paz Andrade, Estanislao Durán and Jacobo Fontán) and in honor of Jesús Valverde, the Baiona – Carrumeiro Chico – Baiona was born, a historic race that continues until currently as one of the most exciting on the peninsular racing calendar.

The winner of that edition, and also of the following one (1982), was a boat from another of those historical sagas that emerged from Galician nautical: the “Vento” by Manuel Fernández, who many years later would receive the gold medal from the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, the highest award in Spanish sailing.

After the victories of the “Ardora” and the “Vento” , the different Pairos of José Luis Freire begin to embroider their name on the honor roll of the Count of Gondomar. The “Pairo Tres” won for the first time in 1983, repeated in 1984, and the following models with the Freire the Conde competed for, all under the same name would give him another 4 more wins.

Until now, José Luis Freire is the one who has achieved the greatest number of victories in the competition. Add a total of 6: three in the eighties (1983, 1984 and 1988) and another three in the first years of the new millennium (2003, 2007 and 2009). Currently, at 84 years old, “Tibu” continues to participate in the Conde (not only as an owner, but also aboard its boats) and, although he has not achieved any more victories, he is always among the favorites.

Following in its wake we find “April Oils” by Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal; that add up to 4 victories, the same ones that Paz Andrade’s “Ardora”, “Castrosúa” led by Willy Alonso and Julio Martínez Gil’s “Alaxe” achieved in their day. The boat of the Ourense brothers has been the undisputed protagonist of the most recent years, taking the grand prize in 2013, and chaining three consecutive golds in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Julio Martínez Gil’s Alaxe is one of the boats with the most victories in the history of the Count of Gondomar with a total of 4

In the last two years, the winners were the team of the Portuguese Rui Ramada, who in 2019 repeated with the “Yess Too” the triumph he had achieved in 2014 with the “Fifty ”; and the “Magical” by Julio Rodríguez, who in 2020 rewrote his name in the history of winners of the Count, who had already signed in 2001 with the “Starfisher” .

Paz Andrade, Julio Babé, Gonzalo Romero, Manuel Fernández, José Luis Freire, Jaime Rodríguez Toubes, José María Lastra, Pedro Campos, Julio Martínez Gil, Gonzalo Araújo, Willy Alonso, Javier de la Gándara… are some of the most outstanding figures in the history of sailing in Spain who have passed (and continue to pass) the Conde de Gondomar Trophy.

Contested without interruption since 1976, the Monte Real Club de Yates competition has established itself as one of the most charismatic regattas in Spain and in 2021 it will celebrate its forty-sixth edition under the presidency of José Luis Álvarez. It will be held in Baiona on July 23, 24 and 25 under the name of Zelnova Zeltia Banco Sabadell Grand Prix.

It will include, as has become a tradition, the historic test of the Carrumeiro Chico, about 100 miles away, whose record is held by “Cenor & De Dietrich” , a Farr 50 from the Real Club de Regatas Galicia, which in 2011 smashed the figures that the Basque sailboat “Zorongo” maintained since 1992. The crew from Arousa, led by Martín Bermúdez de la Puente, completed the ascent and descent to the Carrumeiro Chico from Baiona in just 11 hours, 56 minutes and 57 seconds, lowering the numbers achieved by the Basques 19 years earlier by more than 30 minutes.
