Two regattas held this weekend in the Rías Baixas revealed the names of the new champions of the Monte Real Spring Regatta

The 43rd edition of the Monte Real Club de Yates Spring Regatta came down this Sunday in Baiona with the crowning of its new champions and the awarding of prizes to the crews that were winners of the two regattas held this weekend in the Rias Baixas.
After a first stage in which the sailboats had to circumnavigate the Cíes Islands, the second and last test began this afternoon in Baiona with much more expectation than wind. The regatta committee had to delay the start time of the race because the wind was insufficient, but the situation improved and as the crossing progressed, maximums of 15 knots were reached, which speeded up the navigation of the sailboats.
The Vigo estuary was the setting chosen for the route for all classes, with more or fewer miles depending on the category, and obligatory steps through areas such as Carallones, Toralla or Subrido, to return to Baiona again.
ORC CLASS 1-2
In the ORC 1-2 class, the Yess Racing of the Portuguese Rui Ramada, with a pendant from the Monte Real Club de Yates, consolidated the victory that had been dragging since the first day, and with two wins in the two contested races, they won the gold of the competition. The second and third position also did not vary with respect to the first day, and the silver and bronze went to two boats from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo: the Aceites Abril led by Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal; and Julio Rodríguez’s Magical.
ORC-CLASS 3
Where there were more jumps on this last day of the Repsol Trophy was in the ORC 3 class, in which Ramón Ojea’s Bosch Service Solutions, from the Club Marítimo de Canido, managed to unseat Vicente Cid’s Deep Blue 2.1 from the first position. Real Club Náutico de Vigo, which was one of the favorites to win, but finally had to settle for second place. La Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez, from the Club Náutico Castrelo de Miño, managed to climb one position and slipped into the third step of the final podium.
ORC-CLASS 4
In the ORC 4 class there were unexpected surprises. One of the favorites to win the title, Luis Pérez’s Balea Dous, from the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira, was disqualified due to a breach of the cruise regulations related to the weight of the crew and was left without the coveted laurels, which finally they went to Nahela de Víctor Álvarez, of the Club Náutico Alagua. The Albarellos by Fernando Rey, from the Monte Real Yacht Club; and the Forza Catro of Victor Fernández, occupied the second and third place in the final classification.
ORC-CLASS A2
In the A2 competition, with crews reduced to the maximum, the Q Talento of Javier Rey and Jorge Justo, from Monte Real Club de Yates, repeated the first place he had achieved on the opening day and took the final victory, becoming thus, a firm contender for the title of Galician champion of A2, which will be played in just a few weeks in Baiona. El Alalunga by Rodrigo Rodríguez and Carlos Cárdenas, from the Canido Maritime Club; and the Cinco Islas Albariño of Iñaki Carbajo and Miguel Fins, of the Club Náutico de Beluso, were second and third.
J80 CLASS
Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen was once again the fastest among the J80 monotypes, which competed in real time. He finished the test first and after making full of victories, he took the champion trophy of the Spring Regatta. In the rest of the steps of the podium there was an exchange of positions. .The Marías de Manel Marías, who came third, rose to second place; and the Maija of José Luis Pérez, who held the provisional silver, finished with the bronze.
FIGARO CLASS
In the Figaro class, in which the four women’s sailboats of the Monte Real Women’s Sailing project and two other mixed boats competed, the triumph, after winning the two regatta days, went to Miguel Montes’ Tutatis. Alejandro Vázquez’s Bouvento and María Teresa Valladares’s Ladeira were in second and third position.
The regatera day this Sunday ended on land with the awards ceremony for the winners of the different categories, some trophies that were in charge of delivering the president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez; the head of Marine and Fisheries of Repsol, Inés González Megido; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; the deputy for Sports of Pontevedra, Gorka Gómez; and the provincial head of sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Daniel Benavides.
THE NEXT APPOINTMENT: THE GALICIAN CHAMPIONSHIP OF TWO
After the celebration of the Repsol Trophy – 43rd Spring Regatta, the Monte Real Club de Yates is already approaching the halfway point of its cruise competitions scheduled for this year 2021, a point that it will reach on June 5 with the celebration of the Galician Championship of A Two, for ORCs and J80s. The Baionese club organizes the appointment by delegation of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation. It will be the tenth consecutive year that Monte Real is in charge of this competition, which this year is also the VII Rafael Olmedo Memorial, in honor of its president for more than 40 years, who died in 2015.

· The 43rd Spring Regatta of the Monte Real Club de Yates comes to an end this Sunday with the second and final race and the award ceremony
The Repsol Trophy unfurled sails this Saturday in the Galician Rías Baixas with the celebration of the first of the two days from which the winners of the 43rd edition of the legendary Spring Regatta of the Monte Real Yacht Club of Baiona will emerge.
The competition brought together 47 sailboats grouped into cruise classes, competing under the ORC time compensation formula; and monotypes J80 and Fígaros, the races being disputed in real time.
There were nearly 300 sailors representing nautical clubs from all over Galicia and some from Portugal, who this Saturday disputed a 28-mile route, some and 20 others, surrounding, with more or less turns, the Cíes Islands of the Atlantic Islands National Park from Galicia. Although initially the regatta committee had planned a round trip route between Baiona and the Rande bridge, the wind conditions were not the most suitable for that route and it was decided at the last minute to make the change.
The regatta was held with a wind from the northwest, almost from the north, always above 13 knots, which facilitated the navigation of the sailboats, which were able to complete the test with agility and without problems.
ORC CLASS 1-2
In the ORC 1-2 class, the one with the fastest boats, Julio Rodríguez’s Magical (RCN Vigo) was in the lead from the start, leading the fleet at all times. He crossed the finish line first, after 3 hours and 57 minutes of crossing, but the time compensation caused him to fall to third position, behind Rui Ramada’s Yess Racing (MRCYB), who was the winner of this first test of the Repsol Trophy; and the Aceites Abril of the Pérez Canal brothers (RCN Vigo), which is trying to revalidate the title of the last edition, came second.
ORC-CLASS 3
In the ORC 3 class, one of the most closely contested in the trophy, Vicente Cid’s Deep Blue 2.1 (RNC Vigo), who won the Comunica Trophy last weekend, arrived with enthusiasm and strength at this Spring Regatta and managed to climb to the top of the table. He overtook Bosch Service Solutions of Ramón Ojea (CM Canido), who came second; and Víctor Carrión’s Bom III (CN Punta Lagoa), who will reach the final in third position.
ORC-CLASS 4
The boats that competed in the ORC 4 class made a shorter course than the ORC 1-2-3. In the 20 miles that the regatta committee marked out to circumnavigate the Cíes, Luis Pérez’s Balea Dous (RNC Rodeira) demonstrated, once again, why he is one of the regulars on the podiums of the Rías Baixas competitions. He was the fastest in the test and will reach the final first. Following in the provisional classification are Victor Álvarez’s Nahela (CN Alagua) and Fernando Rey’s Albarellos (MRCYB).
ORC-CLASS A2
In the ORC A2 class, with teams made up of only two people, skipper and crew member, Javier Rey’s Q Talento Consultores, from Monte Real Yacht Club, was the winner; and Rodrigo Rodríguez’s Alalunga, from the Club Marítimo de Canido, came second.
J80 CLASS
In the J80 one-design competition, the largest fleet in the competition, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen had the best result in the opening stage. The ocean navigator’s sailboat, with its usual crew, was the winner of the last edition and came ready to repeat victory. The provisional silver and bronze are held by the Maija of José Luis Pérez and the Marías of Manel Marías, all from the Monte Real Club de Yates.
FIGARO CLASS
The Figaro class drew attention for being the one in which the most women sailed, thanks to the participation of four female boats from the Monte Real Club de Yates Women’s Sailing project, which seeks to increase the presence of women in the regattas held in Galicia. One of them, the Erizana, skippered by Elena Raga, managed to climb to third position. Miguel Montes’s Tutatis and Alejandro Vázquez’s Bouvento were first and second.
LA COSTERA DOMINICAL WILL DECIDE THE WINNERS
The Repsol Trophy – 43rd Spring Regatta comes to an end this Sunday with the holding of the second and last race, the definitive one to configure the final classification. As on the first day, the crews will have to face a coastal route with departure and arrival in Baiona. It will take place along the Vigo estuary but the crossing points are yet to be decided, since they will depend on the wind.
If everything goes according to plan, the regatta committee will start the fleet around noon and in the afternoon, at half past six, the facilities of the Monte Real Club de Yates will host the awards ceremony for the winners, in which will be attended by the president of the club, José Luis Álvarez; Repsol’s marine and fishing manager, Inés González Megido, on behalf of the energy company, sponsor of the event; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; and the deputy for Sports of Pontevedra, Gorka Gómez.

In the SUB 16 category, the winners were Fernando Benítez from the Canary Islands in the men’s section and Marisa Alexandra Vicens from the Balearic Islands in the women’s section.

The fishing village of Baiona, in Galicia, crowned the new champions of the Optimist class this Saturday after the celebration of the 2021 Spanish Championship – Cenor Trophy, which the Monte Real Club de Yates organized during Holy Week by delegation of the Royal Federation Española de Vela and with the sponsorship of Grupo Cenor.
The new champions of children’s sailing in Spain are the canary Fernando Benitez , from the 4 Winds Regatta Club (Las Palmas); and the Balearic Marisa Alexandra Vicens ( Club Nautic s’Arenal) in the SUB 16 category; and Ignacio Martin (RCN Palma) and Blanca Ferrando (RCN Valencia) in the SUB 13 category.
The four won the laurels of the competition after having completed, with the best results, the 5 tests held in the only two days -of the four scheduled- in which they could compete. The wind, very capricious throughout the championship, left the first and third stages blank, and the sailors were only able to score points on the second and last day of regattas.
They did, yes, showing great potential in the water despite the complications of the weather and despite not having been able to sail, train or compete as usual in a very troubled season due to the COVID19 restrictions.
Cenor’s marketing director, Leticia Fernandez, was in charge of presenting the U16 Spanish champion plaque to Fernando Benitez , from Las Palmas. The Canarian managed to beat Tim Lubat (RCN Palma) and Roberto Aguilar (CNM Benalmádena), who had to settle for silver and bronze in the category.
The president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez, did the same with the U16 women’s section, which had its best sailor in Marisa Alexandra Vicens (CN s’Arenal). The Balearic athlete was crowned the new champion of Spain after beating her clubmate Nicola Jane Sadler and the Andalusian María Castillo (CDN Punta Umbría).
The title of new champion of Spain SUB 13 of Optimist is held, from this Saturday, by the Mallorcan from the Real Club Náutico de Palma, Ignacio Martín . The sailors Rodrigo Luis Pérez (CDN Punta Umbría) and Fernando Echávarri (RCM Santander) stayed close to the great final victory. The Andalusian and the Cantabrian occupy the second and third position respectively.
Among the females, the best in the SUB 13 competition was the Valencian Blanca Ferrando , from the Real Club Náutico de Valencia. The second and third place for women’s SUB 13 went to Gabriela Morell from the Balearic Islands (RCN Palma) and Carla Lorenzo from the Canary Islands (RCN Tenerife).
In addition to revealing the names of the new Spanish Optimist champions, the championship held these days in Baiona revealed which are the best autonomous communities through a classification derived from the results of the top sailors in the ranking of each territorial federation.
The winner of this championship by autonomies was, without a doubt, the Balearic community , which obtained the best results in the competition and convincingly demonstrated that it had a fantastic pool of sailors in its ranks. Andalusia and the Canary Islands were, with quite a difference in points, in second and third position.
The territorial federations received their awards from the Mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez. The deputy for tourism of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Ana Laura Iglesias, and the president of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation, Manuel Villaverde, also participated in the cast.
With the closing of the Optimist national, Monte Real puts an end to one of its star events in the children’s sailing season and, while it continues with its J80 one-design league, it is already preparing to open the heavy sailing season, which Its first milestones are the celebration of the Comunica Trophy, on the 24th; and the Repsol Trophy, the first weekend of May.
As for the Optimists, their sights are already set on the Spanish Cup to be held in Hondarribia (Basque Country) at the end of April. The two major international events of the year will follow: the European Championship in June and the World Cup in July, in which a selection of the best sailors from national competitions will participate.

Galicia receives, starting tomorrow, Wednesday, the best sailors of the Optimist class in Spain in the national class championship, which the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona organizes in 2021 by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and thanks to the sponsorship of the Cenor Group.
More than a hundred young sailors from 10 autonomous communities aspire to win the title of champion in the SUB 16 and SUB 13 categories throughout the four days that the competition will last, which will take place in the Galician Rías Baixas.
After two days of registration, control of materials and measurements, the first regatera day will be held tomorrow, a stage that will begin, if the wind allows it, at eleven in the morning. The weather forecast announces an easterly wind in the early hours and the possibility that it will roll to the southeast as the day progresses, which will be very covered, although no rain is expected. The intensity, between 7 and 10 knots with peaks or gusts of up to 17, should not make navigation difficult for sailors.
The 12 scheduled tests, divided into three per day, will be held in a regatta field located, predictably, inside the Bay of Baiona. It will be a trapezoidal route with beacons that will mark the pace of the sailors until the final arrival, located inside the ring. Its duration will be approximately 45 minutes.
The Optimists will be divided each day into two different groups -blue and yellow- with the aim that they can compete against each other. They will navigate a qualifying series of 9 tests during the first three days of competition; and a final series, of 3 sleeves, the last day of the championship. With the celebration of 2 tests, the championship will already be valid; and on the fourth round completed, sailors will be given the chance to discard their worst result.
Leading the regatta committee will be Cristofol Morales and the sports director of Monte Real, Roy Alonso, will be the safety coordinator. In total, more than thirty people including committees, beacons, sailors, juries, measurers, office staff, security and the press will be in charge of the entire championship operation.
The competition will start this year without the classic opening ceremony, an act in which all the participants used to parade carrying the flag of their autonomous community. COVID19 has forced the organization to implement numerous prevention measures to avoid possible contagion and this ritual has been suspended.
Other actions stipulated in the coronavirus control protocol are taking the temperature of the participants, the separation of spaces by autonomies, the maintenance of safety distances or the obligation to always wear a mask on land (in the water, since sail alone, they will be able to take it off).
Among the participants of this Spanish Optimist Championship 2021, a total of 150 sailors from 10 communities: Galicia (22 sailors), Andalusia (20), the Balearic Islands (20), the Canary Islands (20), the Valencian Community (20), Catalonia ( 19), Murcia (11), Basque Country (6), Cantabria (6) and Madrid (4).
In addition to the titles of champions SUB 16 and SUB13, the competition also puts in contention the Championship by Autonomies, which will reward the territorial federations that obtain the best results. In this contest, the first classified of each autonomy and category (SUB 16 and SUB 13) will score and the final general classification will come from the sum of the positions of those sailors.

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen gave no respite this Saturday in Baiona and in addition to achieving the best results on the second day of the Baitra J80 Winter League, managed to take the lead from Manel Marías’ Marías, who was in the lead after the stage inaugural.
The Gándara sailboat, led by the historic sailor from Vigo and crewed by his two sons Jaime and Javier, with the usual Diego Fernández also on board, signed two first and one third and once again demonstrated why it is one of the favorites to win with the ultimate victory.
In the ascent of the Okofen, the fall was for the young Portuguese crew of the Marías, who was affected in the final classification of the day for crossing in sixth position in the first test. Despite recovering pace in the other two, in which he achieved a second and a third place, he had to settle for the second step of the provisional podium.
Just the opposite happened to Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino. It started strong, with a second place, but it lost steam as the regatta day progressed; and the fourth and eighth places that he signed in the rest of the races did not allow him to climb positions beyond the third place that he had dragged from the first stage.
In fourth position is Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, in which this Saturday the presence of the Spanish J80 champion, Javier Aguado, was noted. His good work helped the crew climb positions from 12th to 4th place. It was, without a doubt, the climb of the day, for one of the sailboats with the best results (one first, one second and one fourth in the tests held).
Closing the Top 5 of the Baitra J80 Winter League we find Santiago Estevez’s Spaco, which does not change its position with respect to the first day. They are followed by Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero; the SDN Cormorant of Francisco J. Martínez; and the Ferralemes by Jaime García.
Further down the classification we find Maija by José Luis Pérez; The Galley of Miguel Fernández; Rafael Blanco’s Due; Joao Nuno Allen’s Ifaclinic.com; and Jaime Barreiro’s Petrilla. And they close the list of Luis de Mira’s Namasté; the Pazo de Cea by Iago Carballo; the Miudo by Nacho Salgueiro and the Mondo by Bernardo Macedo.
The Baitra J80 Winter League organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales will return to the bay of Baiona on April 10 with three new tests that will take the monotypes into the halfway point of the competition.

This Saturday, Ribeira led two of his athletes towards victory in the Cenor Regatta, the Galician optimist qualifier that is being held this weekend in Baiona under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates, after placing them at the top of the classification provisional.
In the U-16 category, the winner of the day, with two fifths and one sixth place in the partials, was Jorge Álvarez, from the Ribeira Sports Yacht Club. He managed to beat Javier García, from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña; and Miguel Rodríguez, from the Canido Maritime Club; who were, tied on points, in second and third position respectively.
The sailor Bruno Iglesias, also from the Ribeira Sports Yacht Club, was the undisputed leader of the regatta day among the U-13s, after signing two first places and one second in the three races held. The athlete was one of the brightest in the opening stage of the competition and will reach the final in a very comfortable position, 25 points behind his closest rival, Jaime Díaz, from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña. The provisional silver and bronze medals for the Sub-13s are held by Jaime Díaz, from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña; and Aitana Pérez, from the Monte Real Yacht Club.
In the competition for sailors from the blue group, those who are just starting out, the best classified after the first tests were Diego Lago, from the Oza Maritime Club, in the men’s category; and Lidia Radio, from the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, in the women’s category.

In addition to the usual sports events, which will start at half past one in the afternoon, the novelty of this competition will be a special entertainment program that the Baiona council has prepared, hand in hand with the Casa de la Navegación Museum and the Baiona Theater Classroom, so that children can have fun discovering Baiona.
It is a dramatized track race that will take the little ones through the main tourist attractions of the fishing village. A tour that, with the aim of solving a riddle, will allow you to discover the ins and outs of discovery, to figures as prominent as Diego Carmona, Vasco Gallego, Isabel la Católica or Pinzón; and places like the Church of Santa María, the Monolito de la Arribada, the nuns’ fountain or the Pinta caravel, among others.
To avoid crowds and be able to maintain COVID safety distances, the game will start at six in the afternoon, taking advantage of the forced closure of the hotel industry. It will start from the music box in Parque de la Palma, where an actress, symbolizing Baiona, will give the little ones the first clues to start playing.
Divided into teams, the children will have to solve different riddles that will take them through some of the most outstanding points of the fishing village, where there will be actors representing some of the most important characters in the history of Baiona. They will be the ones who, explaining different historical episodes, will give the participants the following clues to continue with the tour. The winning team will win an optimist candle courtesy of the company Filtros Navales Jesús Betanzos.
“It is the perfect combination of sport, tourism and fun” says the sports director of the Baiona city council, Javier F. The fishing village of Baiona warms up for the Spanish Optimist Championship that it will host at Easter with the celebration, this weekend, of the Cenor Regatta, a regional qualifying class prior to the national one. It will be a competition in which more than 100 boys and girls between 9 and 15 years old will haggle, coming from up to 11 clubs from different parts of Galicia.
The Real Club Náutico de Vigo, with 26 children, will be the club with the greatest representation in the water, followed by the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña with 22 sailors competing and the Club Marítimo de Canido with 18. Athletes from Sanxenxo, Rodeira, Aguete, Panxón, Ribeira, Oza and Ferrol will also compete in this qualifying round. For the Monte Real Club de Yates, organizer of the competition, 6 sailors will participate, among which Pablo Marquina stands out, the athlete from Monte Real who has achieved the best results so far in the Galician ranking.
In the sports program of the event, six tests are planned, with a maximum of three per day, being necessary to complete a single sleeve so that the classification can be considered valid.

With the aim of complying with all COVID19 protocols and applying the maximum control and prevention of contagion during the competition, there will be no more social events than the delivery of trophies to the winners, which will be held on Sunday at six in the afternoon.

After learning of the announcement of the suspension of the prestigious sailing SUPER SERIES in Baiona due to COVID19, we reviewed with the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez, the impact that the pandemic has had on one of the clubs with the most History of Spain.
While many other yacht clubs saw how COVID made them lose members, reduce income, forced them to suspend regattas and the activity of their schools, the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona not only managed to stay afloat, but also signed one of its best years, with record numbers of influx of members and students in its Sailing School.
About a year after the declaration of the state of alarm derived from the coronavirus, the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona, José Luis Álvarez, takes stock of what these last months of confinement and restrictions have meant for the club; and of the actions that have allowed them to be an exception in a bleak panorama.
The organization of the SUPER SERIES has just announced the suspension of the Baiona Sailing Week, which next June was going to bring these “formula 1 of the sea” to Galicia. It will have been a very hard blow for the club…
It has been, without a doubt, quite a hit, since we were very excited about the arrival of the SUPER SERIES in Galicia, but we perfectly understand the decision of the organization and we are glad that they have us for 2022. Right now the situation derived from COVID19 did not give them the security they needed and they have preferred to minimize the risks by reducing the trips and suspending the closest regattas in time. From the club, the only thing we hope is that next year the situation will be much better and we can see these outstanding players in Galicia, in a year that will also continue to be Xacobeo, so it will undoubtedly be a good year to receive them as they deserve .
The truth is that the COVID19 crisis has generated numerous losses in the economic activity of many sectors (the nautical sector has not been an exception) and it is still not very well known what the impact will be in the short and medium term. How has this situation affected the Monte Real Club de Yates?
At Monte Real we are lucky that the vast majority of places are occupied by club members, so we manage to keep the pontoons full throughout the year. But we have noticed a huge drop in the number of transits, due to mobility restrictions. The drop in figures has been tremendous, but of course, they could not cross borders. There has been an impact, without a doubt, but much less than what other clubs have possibly suffered, which have also had many membership losses.
In Monte Real they have not suffered those casualties?
The truth is that no. Every year there are some, for different reasons, but the few casualties that have occurred in these months of pandemic have been covered by the entry of new members and we continue with the same number as before. What’s more, there are still people on the waiting list to join the club, because not all applications are accepted. We want to maintain a stable number, around 700 members, which guarantees the comfort of the facilities, and that is why we do not grow exponentially, not because there is no demand, there is.
How has the club member experienced these months of restrictions and prohibitions?
The truth is that the club has been more alive than ever. In the moments in which they have left us, yes. In the months of the strictest restrictions we had to cancel social events, close the restaurant, paralyze the regattas and the school… but when they allowed us to open in the summer, albeit with restrictions, we had an influx of members, students and sailors that we had not seen in years. .
What do you think was due to this unexpected influx of people during the summer?
At first it caught us a bit by surprise, because we weren’t expecting it, but then we understood what was happening: the club had become a safe place where we could spend some leisure time without worrying about the coronavirus. The partners understood all the control measures put in place, some of which were not even required by the authorities, and they felt comfortable and safe with them.
What other older measures did you put in place to avoid COVID?
We always try to go one step further than what the authorities ask of us. All the requirements of closures, capacity, cleaning, control… and we also bought ozone machines and thermometers to control the temperature at the entrances, distributed masks, and even hired external personnel to guarantee that everyone complied with the regulations. They were months of a lot of control and restrictions that made everything a little more uncomfortable and generated some complaints, but at the same time, they created a bubble, a security environment in the club that was not there outside. And that was the reason why we believe we had more influx than ever, and without, that we know of, cases of COVID, which was what really mattered to us.
One of the aspects that most affected Spanish yacht clubs, closely linked to tourism, was a large drop in the number of visitors, something that had a direct impact on their direct income. Did you also notice it in Baiona?

The truth is that these are difficult times, but we believe that as soon as we can return to normality, Monte Real, Baiona, Galicia and Spain in general have more than enough potential to recover the good pre-COVID tourism figures.
Tourists were lost and regattas were suspended, many regattas, even when they were allowed to take place. Was it a wise decision?
It is difficult to generalize and each club will have to take stock of their decisions based on the reasons that led them to make them. Some would suspend thinking that they would not have sailors, others for fear of contagion, and others simply for comfort. In our case, paralyzing all sporting activity was also valued, but finally we opted to continue promoting sailing. We knew that the decision was going to demand a lot from us, as it did, but we decided to go ahead. And the result was perfect. We held practically all our competitions, including the most popular ones such as the Count of Gondomar and the Prince of Asturias, and we did so without contagion. It was a bet on sailing and it worked out well for us. With a lot of effort, yes.
Last year, in the midst of the pandemic, they announced the celebration of the Super Series, which will have to wait until 2022, and the other great news that the club left us in the months of COVID was its choice as the venue for the 2023 J80 World Cup. , something that they had been pursuing for years. Is this achievement the culmination of your commitment to these monotypes?
I would not know if it is the culmination or not, but of course the fact that they have granted us the celebration of the world championship of a class for which we have been betting for years is a very important milestone. One of the points on our program was, and continues to be, the internationalization of Monte Real, and we are working on that. Bringing these two top-level competitions to Galicia is the result of months and months of work, and the truth is that we are very happy.
One of the projects that they plan to launch this year is VELA EN FEMENINO, aimed at promoting the figure of women in the world of sailing. Tell us more about this proposal.
It is about taking another step in our commitment to women in the world of sailing, because there are still very few women who sail today. 25 years ago we launched, I don’t know if it was the first, but one of the first exclusively female competitions in Spain, the Ladies Cup, and now what we intend to do is launch new lines of action with the same objective, which is none other than to achieve that women have more presence in the nautical world. We have designed a series of proposals for training, competition and also of a social nature, with women victims of gender violence; and we are trying to find a sponsor who shares our same vision and wants to promote this initiative.
The woman will be, then, the protagonist of the future of the club… what other projects do you have in mind for the coming years?
The truth is that we have many projects on the table, although not all of them can be counted because some are still in negotiations or are not completely closed. From what can be counted, training will undoubtedly be one of our bets. We have managed to become a training center of the Royal Yachting Association and in a few months we will be the first club in Galicia and the entire Spanish Bay of Biscay to offer its prestigious courses, which are the most important in the nautical sector worldwide. We will also begin to offer courses to obtain the PNB, the PER and the qualifications of skipper and captain of yachts; and with regard to infrastructure, we are going to improve the club’s facilities, putting fingers in all our seats, which was a demand of many of our visitors, especially international ones. There is also an important advance that is taking place and that we hope to be able to announce in a few weeks, but for now we have to wait.

The 52 SUPER SERIES will finally arrive in Baiona in 2022. The organization of the circuit, one of the three most important nautical events in the world, has decided to cancel all the regattas scheduled for the start of the 2021 season, including those that were to be held in Galicia .
The situation derived from COVID19, the numerous restrictions that are still in force in numerous points and the great efforts necessary to guarantee a safe event in the midst of the pandemic are behind a decision that the Monte Real Club de Yates, which was going to host of the event next June, they greatly regret.
For the president of the historic Baion club, José Luis Álvarez, it is a shame not to be able to count on this prestigious circuit this year in Galicia, but he is confident – he said – that the COVID situation will improve in the coming months and allow the BAIONA to be held SAILING WEEK in 2022.

At the end of this month, the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona will commemorate the half century of life of the Optimist class in Galicia by holding a new edition of the Galician Championship that the club itself hosted for the first time in 1970.
On board the “Canario” and the “Tortuga”, the brothers José and Javier de la Gándara were the winners (first and second respectively) of that first edition, which was held on August 22 and 23, 1970 under the name of “ I Regional Optimist Regattas – Galician Championship”.
17 young sailors from the Sailing School of La Foz, the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, the Club Náutico de Panxón and Monte Real itself met during those two summer days in the bay of Baiona to compete several tests in a triangular field of Olympic route.
After the Gándara brothers, third place on the podium of that first Optimist championship went to “Anduriña IV”, manned by Santiago Campos; Pablo Vasconcellos was fourth aboard the “Bayona II”; and “Don Ramón”, by Ramón Alonso, from RCN Vigo, signed the fifth position.
A special prize was then also awarded to the youngest sailor, which went to Pablito Pereiro for “demonstrating -according to the chronicles of the time- great skill handling his mini boat to perfection”.
With the celebration of the first Galician Optimist Championship, the Monte Real Club de Yates gave, at the beginning of the 70s, the great impulse for the consolidation of a class that arrived in Galicia some years before the hand of Pepe Gándara , the father of the historical Javier de la Gándara.
Gándara learned about this new type of boat in the American magazine “Popular Mechanics Magazine” (distributed in Spain under the name “Mecánica Popular”), in which some simple plans were published with which, in principle, anyone with some tools And with a bit of skill, you could make your own Optimist out of wood.
After seeing them already built in Barcelona, Gándara decided to bring them to Galicia. The first Optimist who sailed in Galician waters in the year 68, he called “Don Andrés”, in honor of his young son. In 1969 there were already 15 units of these new sailboats, known as the “Ferramentas”, because they were built by a carpenter from Ladeira known by that name, with sails of nylon manufactured in an awning company in Vigo. They were boats with which, during the first years, they only sailed in the summer months. Barely a year later, with the Optimists already established as a small fleet at the Monte Real Club de Yates, the First Galician Optimist Championship was held.
The press at that time congratulated the Baionese club for “contributing to creating numerous young skippers who in the future will constitute the crews of the numerous cruise ships that the sports units of the Vigo estuary have”, it said verbatim. So it was. Because those children are today some of the outstanding sailors who sail in the Galician estuaries.
Both the Spanish Sailing Federation and the Galician Sailing Federation of the time, chaired by José Ramón Fontán, helped consolidate the class in Galicia by subsidizing the purchase of numerous units. Some boats that went from the 3,000 pesetas (about 18 euros) of the first “Ferramentas” to the 8,000 pesetas (about 48 euros) that were paid for those of higher quality and the 10,000 pesetas (60 euros) that they cost at the beginning of the 70s
In the autumn of 1971, only one year after the celebration of the first Optimist Galician championship, nearly thirty units participated in the class competitions in Baiona, and it did not take much longer for the optimist to exceed 60. In Galicia there were around 200 optimists (currently there are about 400, of which about 120 participate in official competitions). Among the young sailors of those early years were José, Ángel and Javier de la Gándara, Pablo Vasconcellos, Jaime Varela, Alberto Torné, Rodrigo Andrade, César Casqueiro, Fernando Yáñez, Genoveva Pereiro, Ignacio Retolaza, Alfonso Zulueta and Piluca Presa, among others. The Spanish Optimists were built in Barcelona (La Industrial Velera Marsal), in Palma de Mallorca (the Copino and Darder shipyards), in Torrejón de Ardoz (Spanish Taylor) and here in Galicia, in the prestigious Lagos de Bouzas Shipyard (Vigo), from which a large part of the units that sailed from the year 70 left. They were Optimist that were made in the image and likeness of the first boats of this type born in Clearwater (Florida).
There, in 1947, a group of children “haggled” through the streets of Clearwater with small boxes of soap and a candle that they made themselves. The mayor of the city decided to ban these races in the streets, so that they would not bother people, but he met with a boat designer, Clark Mills, and asked him to turn the soap boxes into a boat for children as soon as possible. cheap possible.
And that is how the Optimist was born, the first gaff sailing boat and a single crew member that over time became increasingly famous, both nationally and internationally. In 1954 “the puddle jumped” and the first ones in Europe began to be built, specifically in Denmark; in 1962 the Optimist Class Racing Association was born in England; and soon after the European Optimist Association was formed. Finally, in 1995 the Optimist was accepted as an international class.
Although the materials with which they are built have evolved over time, the truth is that both the shape of the Optimist and its philosophy remain intact. It was born as a simple boat that would allow children to enjoy the sea and sailing and, more than half a century later, that purpose has not changed.
Celebrating this idea and the five decades since the first Optimist Championship held in Galicia in 1970 is the aim of the Galician Optimist Championship – Baitra Trophy that will be held at the Monte Real Club de Yates at the end of February.

For the youngest members of the household, aged between 7 and 16, the Baionese club organizes Weekly light sailing courses , in the morning or afternoon, so that children can have a first contact with sailing or improve their technique with different types of boats if they already know how to sail.
There are also Day Sailing Camps for them, somewhat more complete than the weekly courses, since they include more hours of sailing, both in the morning and in the afternoon, and food service. It is a proposal aimed above all at those families who find it somewhat more difficult to reconcile during the summer and want their children to enjoy and learn in a relaxed atmosphere.
For those over 16 years of age, Monte Real offers weekly cruising sailing courses , also with the option to choose a morning or afternoon schedule. Always accompanied by a coach from the club, with these courses the students learn to sail in the calm waters of the bay of Baiona and end up going out to the open sea to perfect their knowledge on board the sailboat.
And for those who want to learn to sail but do not have a week to attend the course, Monte Real also offers Courses to learn to sail in one day . During a day, from morning to afternoon, the participants will be able to learn the basic maneuvers to handle a boat.
Sailing to the Cíes Islands or at sunset are other proposals from the Monte Real Yacht Club for this summer, aimed above all at families or groups of friends who want to enjoy sailing while learning sailing concepts.
In the case of Sailing to the Cíes Islands, it is a one-day activity, from eleven in the morning to seven in the evening, which includes a sailing trip to the archipelago during which you learn to sail and disembark on the island to eat and have a guided visit to the natural park.
Between July and September there is also the possibility of Sunset Sailing , an activity with which to discover the keys to handling a sailing vessel as the day falls. It lasts three hours and will be offered from July to September.
There are six proposals for the summer season with which the Monte Real Yacht Club wants to bring the world of sailing closer to all those who want to learn about this sport, improve their practice or simply enjoy sailing along the Vigo estuary.
