HELLO! Ladies Cup 2016 will bring together the best female cruising sailing crews in Galicia

· The nautical competition will be held the first weekend of September within the framework of the XXXI Prince of Asturias Trophy of the Monte Real Yacht Club

· 36 of the best sailors from Spain and Portugal will fight for victory in six races that will take place in the bay of Baiona under equal conditions

· The crews will be exclusively female and will sail in identical one-design boats with the same number of sailors on board

Next September, the ¡HOLA! Ladies Cup, which will bring together the best female cruising sailing crews on the peninsula in the bay of Baiona. It will be held on September 2, 3 and 4, within the framework of the 31st Prince of Asturias Trophy, organized since 1986 by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Naval Military School of Marín.

In the three days that the HELLO! Ladies Cup 2016, the 36 participating sailors will compete under equal conditions, with crews with the same number of sailors and in 6 identical one-design boats, of the Beneteau First Fígaro type, under the name of each of the divisions of the sponsoring international communication group , the HOLA Group (HOLA!, H!FASHION, HELLOFASHION, HELLO!, HOLA MADE IN USA and HOLA.COM). They will fight for victory in six windward-leeward races that will be held in real time, in a regatta field that will be located in the bay of Baiona or in the anchorage of the Cíes Islands, depending on the weather conditions that are recorded during the days of competition.

Among the crews that will participate in the HELLO! Ladies Cup 2016 is led by Amparo Mollá, from the Madrilenian Sailing Federation, champion of the Ladies Cup in the last three editions. The Nada Pahor team from FEMAVE will also attend the event in Baiona, and Conchi de Pedro will skipper the girls from Metromar – Natural Ladies, who will race for the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante. Paloma Gil will lead the crew of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, and the Portuguese Marta Ramada will do the same with the BBDouro We Do Sailing team. The Baiona Angra Atlantic Race sets sail back to Galicia

· The second stage of the ocean regatta organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Angra Iate Clube departed this afternoon from the Azores towards Baiona

· Six ships with Spanish and Portuguese crews will compete for victory in a journey of some 865 miles through Atlantic waters

· The competition will end on the 23rd at the facilities of the Monte Real Club de Yates with the awards ceremony for the winners

With some delay according to the scheduled time, the second stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race departed this afternoon for Galicia, the ocean regatta organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Angra Iate Clube with the collaboration of different Azorean institutions and the Provincial Council from Pontevedra.

The low wind that was recorded at the time set for the start was what forced the start of a race to be postponed for a little over half an hour in which the six participating boats must complete the 865 miles that separate the Azorean town of Angra do Heroism of the Galician coast.

The first 200 miles will undoubtedly be the most complex for a fleet that will have to seek, in an area characterized by little wind, the best possible conditions to achieve the necessary momentum that will allow them to separate themselves from the rest of the boats.

Once they achieve it, everything will depend on the good work of the crews, both when choosing a course and when carrying out the manoeuvres. It will also influence, at least in some boats, their ability to adapt to changes, since there have been modifications in some equipment.

The Saint Maxime del Monte Real Club de Yates, which managed to win the first stage with Miguel Lago at the wheel, is now skippered by Gerardo Alonso. The Portuguese Xekmatt, from the Lisbon Naval Association, also changed leadership, in which José Carlos Prista left the controls in the hands of Hugo Prista.

Pablo Toja replaces Yann Lascan on the Free Spirit, from the Real Club Marítimo de Abra; and Antonio Tea to Unai Basurko aboard the Pakea Cadenote, which now also sails through the Club Marítimo de Canido. The Atlantis del Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas, which continues to be led by Iván Prieto, maintains the same pattern; and the Cleopatra of the Recreational Nautical Association, with José Rafael Ribeiro at the controls.

The evolution of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race can be followed minute by minute via the internet thanks to a monitoring system that will show the data of each boat, the longitude and latitude at which they are and the speed and direction they are sailing .

The competition will end on July 23 in Baiona with the award ceremony for the winners, in a ceremony to be held at nine o’clock at night in the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

The first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, between Baiona and Angra do Heroismo, was won by Saint Maxime del Monte Real Club de Yates, skippered by Miguel Lago, who completed the race in just 5 days, 13 hours and 43 minutes. The bronze went to Cleopatra from the Recreational Nautical Association; and the Free Spirit and the Atlantis, from the Real Club Marítimo de Abra and the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas, completed the classification. The rest of the boats that left Baiona for the Azores were forced to abandon the regatta for different reasons, mostly related to technical problems in the boats.

The president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez, was in charge of presenting, this afternoon at the votive temple of Panxón (Nigrán), the traditional offering of the sea to the Virgen del Carmen, a ceremony that has been held every year since 1939, organized on a rotating basis by the merchant, fishing and sports navies and by the Navy.

In his speech before the numerous authorities present, the president of the Baiona club reviewed the challenges that the sea presents to the people who work or are related to it on a daily basis. “Challenges – he said- like those of the fishermen and shellfish collectors who have to face their harsh conditions to support their families. Or the challenges of the Navy, ready to always help those who need it with a duty of service worthy of admiration and respect”.

José Luis Álvarez also mentioned the great work of the rescue services and the thousands of migrants who, wishing to flee war conflicts, “They throw themselves into the sea with empty pockets of belongings but full of hope, with the dream that the sea will allow them to start a new life.”

Before the intervention of the bishop of the diocese of Tuy-Vigo, in charge of replying to Álvarez, the president of Monte Real ended his intervention by citing Ernest Hemingway to ensure that “no one, ever, is alone at sea” .

The seventy-seventh edition of the offering of the sea in the votive temple of Panxón ended, as has been the tradition, with the blessing of the sea and the singing of the Salve Marinera.

The Saint Maxime of the Monte Real Yacht Club was the first boat to cross the finish line of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race this morning, the ocean regatta that is being held these days in the Atlantic organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Angra Iate Clube. The Galician crew was the fastest to complete the 865 miles of the first stage of the competition, which last Sunday set sail from the fishing village of Baiona towards the Azorean town of Angra do Heroismo.

According to the tracking system installed on board the ship, the Saint Maxime sailed at an average speed of 7.2 knots, reaching maximum speeds of 11.6 at times, and took 5 days, 13 hours and 43 minutes to complete the journey. This morning, at 2:43 Spanish time, he was the first to cross the finish line located on Isla Terceira and became the real-time winner of the first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race.

At the wheel of the ship, a 50-foot carbon Shipman designed by J&J Desing and assembled by José Miguel Roquette, was one of the great names of sailing in Galicia, Miguel Lago from Vigo. Winner of the 1st Discovery Route in 1984, the Tour of Europe and the Fasnet Race in 1993, three editions of the Sardinia Cup and as many Copas del Rey, this experienced trimmer now adds a new triumph to his extensive resume of nautical victories.

Along with him, completing the crew, three of his usual racing companions, Juan José Lago, Gerardo Alonso and Javier Lago, and two other outstanding sailors, Daniel Méndez and Guillermo Caamaño. A team of six that knew how to complement each other perfectly to place Saint Maxime at the head of the regatta at all times and cross the finish line in first position.

José Carlos Prista’s Xekmatt, from the Lisbon Naval Association was, without a doubt, another of the important boats in this first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race. This Portuguese team of family and friends, with more than ten years of experience in regattas and numerous victories in trophies such as the Prince of Asturias, the Atlantic Cup of Azores and several cruise championships in Portugal, sailed during the first days following practically the same course than the Saint Maxime, but in the final stretch they separated and had less luck than the Galicians. They crossed the finish line second about five hours after the first.

The rest of the fleet sailed somewhat further away from the first and quite grouped together. The Atlantis of the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas, skippered by Iván Prieto, and with free software technology on board, led this group most of the time, sailing at an average speed of 5.9 knots and reaching 10 at times. Along with him, the Free Spirit of Yann Lascan, of the Real Club Marítimo de Abra; and Cleopatra by José Rafael Ribero, from the Recreational Nautical Association. Somewhat more detached was the crew of the smallest boat in the fleet, the Brumario, from the Ribeira Yacht Club, with Alejandro Pazó at the controls.

The Pakea Cadenote Uno, from the national sailing prize Unai Basurko, finally decided to abandon the first stage of the competition. After having suffered several technical problems that forced them to return to the peninsula and having to resume the regatta later, the crew decided to withdraw and start the engine to reach Angra do Heroismo on time and be able to complete the second stage, back to Baiona.

The Pakea thus joined the Moflete and the Txole, withdrawn from the test a few hours after starting due to various problems with the boat. The tenth boat entered in the regatta, Henril Olsson’s Dulcamara, did not set sail due to engine problems.

The awards ceremony for the first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race will be held next Wednesday at the Angra Iate Clube, and just one day later, on Thursday 14, the second stage will begin, between the Azores and Baiona.

Long sails the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race

Great expectation this morning in the bay of Baiona to attend the return of the Monte Real Club de Yates to international regattas with the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, a competition that the Baiona yacht club organizes in collaboration with the Angra Iate Clube de Azores.

Very punctually, at one in the afternoon, nine boats set out for Angra do Heroismo, on the Terceira Island of the Azorean archipelago, where the first ones are expected to begin arriving within five days. Although at the time of the start the wind blew with very little intensity and did not allow a quick and lucid advance towards the uncheck mark, once the Carallones mark was passed, the wind increased in intensity and the regatta gained momentum.

It was then that the two groups that differed from the first moment began to consolidate. In the lead, standing out from the rest, the Saint Maxime, a 50-foot carbon very agile in navigation even with light winds, skippered by Miguel Lago. Very close to it, another ship from Monte Real, the Txole de Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, 47 feet. And without detaching himself from them, José Carlos Prista’s Xekmatt, from the Lisbon Naval Association, also navigates, accustomed to the waters of the Atlantic after having completed several regattas from Lisbon to Azores.

The Pakea of the national sailing prize Unai Basurko and the Cleopatra led by José Rafael Ribeiro are also sailing these first few miles at a very good pace, with about 9 knots on average. A little further back are Iván Prieto’s Atlantis, Yann Lascan’s Free Spirit, and Alejandro Pazó’s Brumario. And closing ranks, Antonio Díaz’s Moflete.

Henril Olsson’s Dulcamara, which was going to race for the Monte Real Club de Yates, could not finally go out to sea due to an engine problem, which gave failure hours before departure and prevented the boat from complying with the safety requirements required by the race committee.
