The historic sailor from Vigo, Javier de la Gándara, was relentless once again in the Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates, a competition that saw its second day this afternoon in Baiona.

Aboard the Okofen and with his usual crew, made up of Jaime de la Gándara, Diego Fernández and Hugo Ferreiro, De la Gándara won the three races held this Saturday in the waters of the bay of Baiona, with which he now has six victories in the six regattas held throughout this month.

Neither the problems they had again with the spinnaker, nor the deep sea that made it difficult for the sailboats to navigate, nor even the good work of other boats such as Francisca Barros’ Miudo by Storax, prevented the Okofen crew from crossing first the finish line in all races run.

With this new full of victories, De la Gándara and his team are increasingly separating themselves from their rivals, whom they already exceed by more than ten points. The closest, in second and third position in the classification, and level on points, are Miudo by Storax and Virazón.

The Portuguese from Miúdo signed three fantastic regattas this afternoon, which allowed them to rise from fifth place to second. They did it with a completely renewed crew compared to the first day. At the controls, Francisca Barros, a very young Portuguese sailor who has been demonstrating her talent aboard these monotypes for some time.

Miguel Lago’s Virazón, another of the classics on the J80 competition podiums, came out, as always, ready to fight, but after a very good first race, he lost some steam and had to settle for third place in the Provisional podium, where he is tied on points with Miúdo.

After six tests and the application of a discard, the classification of the J80 Class Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates is completed by Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes, Fernándo Yáñez’s Cansino, Bernardo Macedo’s Mondo, Juan’s Luna Nueva Luis Tuero and the Pazo de Cea de María Campos.

Closing the list are Luis de Mira’s Namasté and Willy Caamaño’s Alumisel, who were unable to go out on the water this afternoon to compete in the second day of tests, but who will return to the competition in the third stage, on February 11.

GENERAL RANKING

  1. Okofen – Javier de la Gandara (5 points)
  2. Miudo by Storax – Francisca Barros (15 points)
  3. Virazón – Miguel Lago (15 points)
  4. Ferralemes – Enrique Porto (17 points)

The Secretary General for Sport visits the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School

· The head of sport at the regional level today made her first official visit to the Baionese club after taking office last December

· Marta Míguez verified in situ the operation of a school that provides service throughout the year to hundreds of people with different disabilities

· The Secretary General gave a very positive assessment of the initiative “because of the impact it has on a social group with great relevance and presence in society”

The General Secretary for Sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Marta Míguez, from Ourense, today made her first official visit to the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona after taking office last December.

The head of sport at the regional level wanted to know in situ the operation of the Adapted Sailing School that the Baiona club launched five years ago to bring the sea closer to people with disabilities and allow them to navigate under equal conditions. Some objectives that, in the words of the general secretary, are fully shared by her department.

The Monte Real Adapted Sailing School, said Marta Míguez, is “an initiative with a very important impact for a social group of great relevance and presence in a society in which, unfortunately, it has far fewer opportunities than other people”. That is why, he assured, that the intention of the secretariat is to give continuity to the support that the Xunta de Galicia had been providing for years.

During her visit to Monte Real, accompanied by the Head of the Provincial Sports Service of Pontevedra, Daniel Benavides, the general secretary was received by the president and vice president of the club, José Luis Álvarez and Alejandro Retolaza, as well as by the new manager, Óscar Calero.

It also coincided with a group of students from the Juan María de Nigrán Center, a group that provides services to people with intellectual disabilities and their families, and who have been coming to Baiona for years to sail with the Adapted Sailing School. Míguez shared a few moments of conversation with them and even got on one of the boats in which they previously sailed.

The rowing world champion, Óscar Calero from Madrid, has just been appointed as the new manager of the Monte Real Club de Yates. With a Master’s degree in business administration and management from the University of Oxford and an extensive career of more than twenty years in business management, Calero assumes the management of one of the most traditional yacht clubs in the country.

He does so with a CV in which, in addition to his professional experience in the field of business, his extensive background in the sports world stands out. In addition to being world rowing champion in 2009, he has been a coach, technician and development advisor for different federations.

In the field of sailing, Calero has been a J80 sailor, a class that the Monte Real Club de Yates has been promoting for years through the acquisition of new boats and the organization of specific competitions for these monotypes, such as the Winter League that these months are celebrated in Baiona.

Looking to the future, the new manager will work to bring to fruition the guidelines of the club’s Board of Directors, currently chaired by José Luis Álvarez. Some guidelines that involve the implementation of new lines of action in different areas, with the aim of improving the services and benefits that Monte Real offers today to its members and visitors in Baiona.

The promotion of nautical tourism, the organization of sports competitions and the commitment to training through the MRCYB Sailing School and the Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities, will continue to be, one more year, strategic axes in the different actions of the club.

Victory of Javier de la Gándara in the premiere of the J80 Class Winter League

· Three first places in the three races held this afternoon in the bay of Baiona gave victory to the boat skippered by the ocean sailor

Okofen thus leads the J80 Class Winter League of the Monte Real Yacht Club followed by Miguel Lago’s Virazón and Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes

· The one-design competition continues on the 28th of this month of January with the second of the six days scheduled until the end of March

Three victories in the three races held this afternoon in Baiona place Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen in the lead of the J80 Class Winter League, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates in the waters of the Bay of Baiona.

The competition opened today with ideal weather conditions, wrapped in a sunny and very cold day, but with good wind for the sailboats, since, with few exceptions, it blew above ten knots practically at all times.

At three in the afternoon, punctual according to the scheduled time, the members of the regatta committee started the first of the tests. The ten participating sailboats, all from the J80 class, had to complete a windward-leeward double loop course, which also included an offset. Almost three miles of distance per task that would give the crews enough margin to demonstrate their good work on the water.

And that was precisely what Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen did. The sailboat skippered by the historic ocean sailor and crewed by his son Jaime de la Gándara, Diego Fernández and Hugo Ferreiro, managed to overcome a couple of small problems that arose throughout the regatta, and always crossed the finish line first.

On certain occasions, Fernándo Yáñez’s Cansino and Tiago Roquete’s Miudo by Storax managed to overtake him, but Okofen very soon managed to regain their leadership position and take the lead again.

Thus, De la Gándara’s men lead a competition that leaves Miguel Lago’s Virazón with his usual crew, formed by Gerardo Alonso, Juan Lago and Javier Lago, on the second step of the provisional podium. On this first day they achieved three third places and are six points behind the leader.

In third position, three points behind the second and nine behind the first, is Ferralemes, skippered by Enrique Porto, and manned by Damián Puebla, Alberto Martín and Roberto Fontán.

Completing the classification after this inaugural stage are Cansino by Fernándo Yáñez, Miudo by Storax by Tiago Roquete, Namasté by Luis de Mira, Pazo de Cea by María Campos, Mondo by Bernardo Macedo, Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, and Willy Caamaño’s Alumisel.

The J80 Class Winter League will continue on the 28th with the second of the six competition days scheduled until the end of next March.

This Saturday the Banco Sabadell J80 Class Trophy is decided in Baiona, a competition organized exclusively for these monotypes by the Monte Real Yacht Club with which the Baiona club closes the 2016 sailing season.

The trophy sponsored by Banco Sabadell comes to an end with the last tests scheduled in the program, some regattas that will be held from three in the afternoon in the waters of the bay. If the wind allows it, several windward-leeward rounds will be held in which, in addition, a discard could come into play, which would allow the crews to eliminate their worst result from the classification with the aim of improving their position in the table.

Waiting for what happens on the water and the changes that may arise after the application of this possible discard, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen is the boat that is closest to winning. In first position since the opening day, the crew led by the sailor from Vigo managed to separate themselves from their rivals in the last stage and remains in the lead with 11 points.

Seven and eight points behind Okofen, the provisional podium is completed by Namasté, skippered by Luis de Mira, who after his good performance the previous day managed to climb from fourth to second place, and remains on 18 points; and the Portuguese team of Miudo, led by Tiago Roquette, who despite dropping a step in the standings in the last stage, remains in the top three with 19 points.

Somewhat further down, Javier Rey’s Pazo de Cea closes the competition table, with 22 points; Willy Caamaño’s Alumisel, with 26; Miguel Lago’s Virazón, with 27; Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, with 30 points; and the Ferralemes run by Enrique Porto and the Cansino run by Fernándo Yáñez and Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, who participated in only one day, with 34 and 47 points respectively.

After the celebration of the last tests of the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy, the Monte Real Club de Yates will host a fellowship dinner for the participants and, at the end of it, the award ceremony for the winners. Participating in it, on behalf of the sponsoring entity, will be the director of private banking Galicia Sur of Banco Sabadell, José Celada; and the director of Galicia Sur business banking, Ramón Correa.

Javier de la Gándara consolidates his leadership in the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy

· With the results achieved this Saturday in Baiona, the sailor from Vigo distances himself from his rivals and places Okofen one step away from winning the trophy

Luis de Mira’s Namasté completed two good races today and managed to sneak into second place on the provisional podium closely followed by Miudo

· The Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates will be decided at the end of the month with the last day of testing on Saturday 26

Baiona, November 12, 2016.- Aboard the Okofen, the historic sailor from Vigo, Javier de la Gándara, consolidated his leadership this Saturday in the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy, which disputed its third day in the Bay of Baiona with very complicated conditions for navigation.

Very intense showers at times and a very light and very shifty wind greatly hindered the work of the regatta committee, which was able, despite everything, to start two tests for the J80 fleet called by the Monte Real Club de Yates in its league of autumn

There were two windward-leeward routes in which the monotypes, with few exceptions, achieved very different results. In the first race, Miguel Lago’s Virazón clearly prevailed, moving away from the rest of the boats from the opening minutes and comfortably crossing the finish line in first position.

In the second race, however, Virazón had less luck and fell to fifth place, just the opposite of Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, who rose from sixth to first and reaffirmed their leadership of the competition.

With 11 points in the general classification, De la Gándara’s crew moves away from their rivals and Okofen is one step away from winning the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy, which will be decided at the end of the month on the last day of tests.

As for the rest of the qualifiers, it is worth noting the performance of Luis de Mira’s Namasté, who entered the provisional podium after abandoning the fourth place that he had been dragging since the start of the championship and moving up to second, unseating Miudo from that position, skippered by Tiago Roquette from Porto.

Also to be distinguished on this third day are the crew of Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes, one of the most regular, with two second places in the two races held; and the incorporation of a new boat to the J80 fleet of Baiona, in Cansino, owned by Fernándo Yáñez and Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, which will compete from now on with the rest of the monotypes.

Thus, with De la Gándara’s Okofen in the lead, Luis de Mira’s Namasté and Tiago Roquette’s Miudo in second and third position separated by just one point, and the rest of the fleet more grouped in the rest of the positions , the excitement continues to know who will finally win the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy from the Monte Real Yacht Club.

· The one-design regatta organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club crosses its equator this Saturday with Javier de la Gándara leading the trophy

On board the Okofen, the sailor from Vigo was placed at the head of the provisional classification after winning the first day of tests held in October

· The Portuguese crew of the Miudo will try to improve their position in the table and close the gap of just two points that separates them from the provisional leader

The Banco Sabadell Trophy returns to Baiona this Saturday with a new day of regattas for the J80 monotypes, which will be held from three in the afternoon in the waters of the Bay of Baiona.

The competition, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, crosses its equator with Javier de la Gándara leading the trophy. The sailor from Vigo was placed at the head of the provisional classification after winning, aboard the Okofen, in the first stage of tests, held last October.

After the suspension of the second day due to lack of wind, the regatta committee hopes to be able to start, this Saturday, several windward-leeward routes, in which the one-design fleet will compete in real time. If the weather forecasts are met, the wind this time will not be an impediment for the sailboats to compete in the scheduled tests.

In addition to Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, who leads the table with 4 points, we will also have to pay close attention to the Miudo’s Portuguese crew, led on this occasion by Tiago Roquette, who will try to overcome the barely two points that distance them from pride of place.

Somewhat lower in the provisional classification, although separated by more than 5 points from Okofen and Miudo, are Pazo de Cea, skippered by Javier Rey; and the Namaste by Luis de Mira.

After this Saturday’s day in Baiona, the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy will only have one last day of tests left before the final awards ceremony, which will be held on the 26th at the Monte Real Club de Yates.

Sailing weekend in Baiona with the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy

· The one-design competition organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club celebrates its second day of tests this Saturday in the bay of Baiona

· The sailor from Vigo Javier de la Gándara will try to maintain the leadership of the competition after his victory on the opening day aboard the Okofen

Baiona will be the scene this Saturday of a new day of sailing at the hands of the Banco Sabadell Trophy, a competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates exclusively for the J80 monotypes, one of the fastest growing boats in Spanish territory in the last years.

The tests, which will give continuity to those that opened the championship a fortnight ago, will be held from three in the afternoon in the waters of the interior of the bay, where the sun is expected to shine and temperatures that are more than pleasant for this time of year.

The participating boats will compete, competing in real time, on several windward-leeward routes in a maximum of three tests that can be followed from the sandbanks that surround the bay, as well as from the Monte Boi promenade, in the Parador Nacional area.

Skippered by Javier de la Gándara from Vigo, Okofen will try to maintain the leadership of the competition after its victory on the opening day, where the crew led by the historic ocean sailor achieved two first places and one second, and placed at the top of the general classification.

Just two points away from the team from Vigo are the Portuguese from Miudo, with Pedro Paula Pinto in the lead. Despite having completed the regattas of the first stage with very good performance, they were not the ones to win the provisional gold, for which they will fight again this Saturday.

A little further down the ranking, although separated by more than 5 points from Okofen and Miudo, are Pazo de Cea, skippered by Javier Rey; and the Namaste by Luis de Mira.

The Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy will put the sporting note on the All Saints Bridge in Baiona, where the good weather forecasts herald a weekend with a large influx of tourists and visitors.

De la Gándara “flies” and takes the first victory of the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy

· The historic sailor from Vigo took the lead in the competition after winning on board the Okofen the first day of regattas held in the bay of Baiona

· His crew had a tough one-on-one with the Portuguese team of the Miudo that finally had to settle for second position

· The Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club continues on the 29th with the second of the four scheduled days

The historic sailor from Vigo Javier de la Gándara leads the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy after winning the first day of the one-design competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and held this Saturday in Baiona.

At the helm of the Okofen, De la Gándara led a crew that was very united and that demonstrated its good work in the three races held on an afternoon of clouds and showers, but with good wind for navigation.

The eleven knots that were recorded on average, with peaks of up to 14 at times, allowed the Okofen to “fly” over the waters of the bay, and achieve two first places and one second in the windward-leeward courses designed by the regatta committee .

That last first place that escaped De la Gándara’s men was snatched away by Pedro Paula Pinto’s Miudo, his most direct rival on this opening day of the trophy. The Portuguese kept a tough hand in hand with the Galician throughout the competition, but finally had to settle for provisional silver.

In third place in the Banco Sabadell Class J80 Trophy is Javier Rey’s Pazo de Cea, closely followed by Luis de Mira’s Namasté and Willy Caamaño’s Alumisel, fourth and fifth after the first tests held this Saturday.

They are followed in the classification by two of the boats that initially started as favorites after winning in previous editions, the Luna Nueva of Juan Luis Tuero from Oviedo, and the Virazón of Miguel Lago, skippered this Saturday by Gerardo Alonso.

Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes completes the classification of a competition that, predictably, will keep the excitement going until the end, due to the quality of the participating sailors and the characteristics of the one-designs, very fast in navigation, even with little wind.

The Banco Sabadell Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club with the sponsorship of the Catalan banking entity, continues on October 29 with the second of the four days scheduled for this autumn.
