France and Portugal know the MRCYB Adapted Sailing School

A group of representatives from the Finistère Handisport Départemental Committee (France) and the Alto Minho Intermunicipal Community (Portugal) visited the Monte Real Yacht Club today to see first-hand our Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities.

Their objective was to see how the school was born, what its objectives are and how we work, since, as they told us, we are a reference for them when it comes to bringing sailing closer to people with all kinds of disabilities.

During the meeting we had with them and the visit to the club, we told them how these 5 years of intense work have been to turn the school into what it is today, and we showed them what our facilities are like, deserving of recognition for the elimination of architectural barriers.

Appointment with the J80 this Saturday in Baiona

· The fleet that competes in the AXA J80 Autumn League will try to open the championship after a blank first day due to lack of wind

· The regatta committee has prepared three batons for the monotypes that will be disputed in real time starting at three in the afternoon

· The competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of AXA Seguros will once again be held in the waters of the Bay of Baiona

Baiona, October 27, 2017.- Baiona hosts this Saturday the second day of the AXA J80 Autumn League, a competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of AXA Seguros and which takes place in a league format during the months of October and November.

After a blank first stage, in which the sailboats were unable to race due to lack of wind, the one-design fleet returns to the water this weekend with the intention of opening the championship and starting to design the winners’ podium.

The Regatta Committee, with Fernando Giraldo at the helm, will prepare a windward/leeward course for the fleet, with two tacks and two sterns, which the J80s must complete up to three times if the weather permits.

As of today, the forecasts indicate that the wind will blow with sufficient intensity to dispute the scheduled tests, so that the public will be able to enjoy sailing the sailboats again from three in the afternoon in the bay of Baiona.

The Okofen by Javier de la Gándara, the Namasté by Luis de Mira, the Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, the Miudo by Storax by Afonso Leite, the Pazo de Cea by María Campos or the Cansino by Fernando Yáñez will be some of the boats that We’ll see on the water.

The appointment will coincide with another of the events organized by Monte Real this weekend, the European nautical tourism congress Galicia Atlantic Destination , which brings together twenty nautical clubs and associations from all over Europe to discuss the current and future challenges of the sector.

Nautical tourism, under discussion at the Galicia Atlantic Destination

· Representatives of nautical clubs and associations from all over Europe debated this Friday in Baiona on the situation and future challenges of the sector

· The participants agreed to point out the great potential of Galicia to attract visitors from the old continent and pointed out possible improvement actions

· The congress travels to the Arousa estuary tomorrow, Saturday, to take a tour of the estuary before returning to Baiona for its closing ceremony

Baiona, October 27, 2017.- The Parador Nacional de Baiona hosted this Friday the first day of the European nautical tourism congress Galicia, Atlantic Destination , in which representatives of twenty nautical clubs and associations from the old continent discuss the situation and future challenges of the sector.

In the inaugural session, which included several presentations, round tables and workshops, the attendees highlighted the improvements registered in the ports and marinas of Galicia over the last few years, and agreed to point out the great potential that the community has to attract visitors from all over Europe.

But not everything was praise, since some problems were also put on the table, mainly related to the language and air connections. The difficulties in reaching Galicia on direct flights from many of the countries of origin of possible transits and the fact that in some marinas the staff barely speak English were noted.

Other improvement actions that were presented at the congress have an impact on the need to implement complementary infrastructures and services for ports and marinas; and carry out a better dissemination of tourist proposals in order to reach the greatest number of people possible.

Europe in the spotlight

If the authorities in charge of opening the Galicia agreed on something, Atlantic Destination was the need to promote the great potential of Galicia’s nautical tourism throughout Europe, with the aim of turning it into a place of reference for sailors.

The director of Tourism of Galicia, Nava Castro, in charge of inaugurating the Galicia, Atlantic Destination , pointed to the old continent as one of the main markets with which Galicia has to work, since, as he assured, 8 out of 10 boats that navigate the Galician estuaries come from different European countries.

The president of Portos de Galicia, José Juan Durán, also influenced this idea, speaking of the loyalty of the traffic they receive from Europe as one of the objectives of his department. “Galicia – he said- has achieved that the nautical facilities receive a greater number of visitors each year, and the effort must now focus on more qualitative than quantitative aspects”.

On behalf of the Monte Real Yacht Club, which organizes the event in collaboration with Turismo de Galicia, Portos de Galicia and the Baiona city council, its president, José Luis Álvarez, intervened. In his speech he invited all the attendees to get to know the attractions of our coast, among which he highlighted the fact of having “navigable estuaries throughout the year, a strategic position for transits, and unparalleled people, culture and gastronomy”.

Mini-cruises through the estuaries and strategies for regional nautical development

The representatives of the twenty nautical clubs and associations from all over Europe that attend the Galicia, Atlantic Destination were able to learn first-hand about two of the proposals that seek to promote nautical tourism in Galicia: the mini-cruises through the estuaries and the European Ecodestin project.

The president of the Galician Association of Nautical Activities (Agan +), Manuel Soliño, was in charge of explaining the mini-cruises through the estuaries. They are a series of navigation itineraries that link various routes with sectors of tourist attraction such as culture, heritage or oenology. The offer includes six routes through the Galician estuaries by ferry-catamaran or sailboat, with tours of areas such as the Arousa estuary, the Atlantic Islands or the fishing villages of the Vigo estuary, among others.

The Ecodestín project, presented by the manager of Estratexia Plus, Antonio Monteagudo, follows the example of development of the fjords in Norway and seeks to make the territory more attractive by promoting and developing the cultural heritage linked to the estuaries, rivers and coast of the Galicia Euroregion – North of Portugal. With European funds, the ports will be able to increase their transit docking capacity, make them more accessible and reinforce them with technology.

The congress moves tomorrow to the Arousa estuary

After the opening day held this Friday at the Parador Nacional de Baiona, the Galicia, Atlantic Destination will travel to the Arousa area tomorrow for a tour of the estuary.

The visitors, from Germany, Belgium, Denmark, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Portugal and the United Kingdom, will embark at the port of Cabo de Cruz, in Boiro, to sail to the island of Sálvora, included in the Maritime-Terrestrial Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia.

The islands of Noro and Rúa, the archipelago of Guidoiro, and the islands of Areoso and Arousa will be some of the other points that will be visited on the second and last day of the congress. A tourist train route through Vilanova de Arousa and a visit to the Valle Inclán House Museum will put an end to the meeting of European nautical clubs and associations.

The AXA Seguros boat manned by students from the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities received a special mention

Baiona, September 3, 2017.- This afternoon the thirty-second edition of the Prince of Asturias Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Escuela Naval Militar, and held over the last three days, concluded in Baiona.

With more than 80 boats in the running, the competition, one of the most prestigious on the Spanish nautical scene, managed to put on a show in the Rías Baixas despite the lack of wind that was the protagonist of the last two days and forced the suspension of some of the planned tests.

In the competition of the big boats, in which the very tight classification of the previous day announced a very exciting dispute, not even a test could be held. The wind appeared and disappeared, rolled continuously and could not stabilize at any time. Shortly before the deadline set for the end of the starts, the regatta committee decided to raise annulment, so the provisional podiums became definitive.

In the Óptica Studio ORC 1 class , the crew of the Pairo 8 , from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, led by the Olympian Jordi Xammar, was the winner of the trophy. He took the win beating José Carlos Prista ‘s Xekmatt, from the Lisbon Naval Association; and the April of Jorge and Luis Pérez Canal, of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, who were second and third respectively.

In the Aceites Abril ORC 2 class , the Prince’s grand prize went to Sanxenxo at the hands of Willy Alonso, who placed the Sum Innovation at the top of the classification. Delmar Conde’s Porto de Aveiro , from the Boca de Barra Yacht Club; and the Atlantic MBA of Rui Ramada, from Monte Real, completed the podium.

The Vigo and Baiona clubs took home the prizes for the Gadis ORC 3 class . For the nautical man from Vigo, the first went, in which Luis Suárez’s Maracaná engraved his name; and in Monte Real the second and third were left, by Luis Manuel García’s Unus and Jean Claude Sarrade’s Fend la Bise .

Luckier than ORC’s 1, 2 and 3 was the fleet of the Volvo Autesa ORC 4 and Martin Miller ORC Open classes, because although they took a long time to start, they were able to take advantage of a breeze to compete in a 7-mile coastal course on this last day.

Francisco Javier Rey’s Con Caalma , from the Monte Real Yacht Club; and Ay Carmela of Juan Martínez Pazó, from the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas, won the Volvo Autesa ORC 4 class.

In the Martin Miller ORC Open class , the Jandrocho Team led by Roberto Reboredo, from San Adrián de Cobres, beat Bombastic led by César Fernández Casqueiro, from Monte Real; and the Villain of the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña, skippered by Luis Bodelón.

The podium of the Storax Clásicos class was made up as follows: Luis Molina’s Blue Moon (RCN Coruña) was the winner, and Carlos Romero’s Pingüino Uno (CM Canido) and José Manuel Cores’s Belisa (AGABACE) were second and third.

In the 6 meters dispute, the results were defined by the test held on Saturday, because although the fleet went out into the water and was able to start a task, the lack of wind forced the regatta to be suspended after the first stern.

In the competition of 6 meters classic the victory was taken by Capriche by Íñigo Echenique, from the Canido Maritime Club; and in the 6 meters he won the Maybe by Luis Martín Cabiedes, from the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, who also won the trophy of the 6m pool combined classification . El Bribón Movistar del Rey Juan Carlos, in which he sailed accompanied by Pedro Campos, came second.

In the Solventis J80 class , Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen , from Monte Real, started as the favorite and did not disappoint. He was the winner of this thirty-second edition of the Príncipe and also took home the Mary Woodward Special Award for the best J80 boat of the season. Among the rest of the fleet there were two other outstanding ships, the Marina Coruña – Coast by Pablo Martínez (RCN Coruña) and the Miudo de Francisca Barros (MRCYB), who in addition to acting as strong rivals of De la Gándara on the water, won the second and third prizes of the trophy.

King Juan Carlos was in charge of presenting the award to the winning crew of the HELLO! Ladies Cup, the exclusively female competition held within the framework of the Prince of Asturias Trophy and which brings together 36 of the best patron saints in Spain. The boat Hello! , from the BB Douro club, skippered by Marta Ramada climbed to the top of the podium, leaving the second position for the Monte Real Hello Fashion Monthly , skippered by Rosalía Martínez and with a crew of students from the organizing club’s Sailing School .

In the distribution of prizes, which was chaired by the King Emeritus, an honorable mention was also given to the ship AXA Seguros , crewed by students from the Juan María de Nigrán Center for people with intellectual disabilities. They are a group of boys who attend, throughout the year, the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School and who participated, for the third consecutive year, in the Prince of Asturias Trophy. The initiative has the support of the Ministry of Social Policy.

In addition, the Conde de Barcelona Don Juan de Borbón Prize was awarded to the best boat with a Portuguese crew , which was won by the Porto de Aveiro of the Club Náutico Boca de Barra, skippered by Delmar Conde.

· The 32nd Prince of Asturias Trophy includes tonight the celebration in Baiona of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards gala

Baiona, September 2, 2017.- The most outstanding of the nautical world in Spain met once again in Baiona at the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards, awards created 25 years ago with the aim of recognizing the work of different people and institutions, as well as its human and sporting values.

The historic Monte Real Yacht Club hosted tonight, as part of the celebration of its 32nd Prince of Asturias Trophy, the award ceremony for the Maserati boat, the ABC de la Náutica supplement, Fernándo Echávarri and Tara Pacheco , the Spanish Impulse, Xabi Fernández and the Naval Military School of Marín.

Fernando León, skipper of the Maserati, was in charge of collecting, from the hands of the sports delegate of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Consuelo Besada, the award given to the Puerto Portals boat, armed by Álvaro Irala, as the best ORC boat.

The Mariano Aguado Communication Award was won this year by the monthly supplement ABC de la Náutica , for the dissemination it has been carrying out, for more than a decade, of the main news related to sailing produced in Spain. The award was collected by its director, Pedro Sardina.

Fernándo Echávarri from Galicia and Tara Pacheco from the Canary Islands, winner of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award for the Best Olympic Team, could not be present in Baiona tonight due to their sporting commitments, and the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal, presented his award to Paco Pepe , first coach of the Galician athlete, who thanked the award on his behalf.

The Spanish Impulse by Iberostar was recognized as the best regatta team of the year for its performance representing Spain in the Youth America’s Cup, the youth version of the Copa América de Vela. From the “roosters” team, the Olympian Jordi Xammar and the Galician Luis Bugallo were present at the gala, who went up to collect the award accompanied by part of their sports team. The secretary for sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Marta Míguez, was in charge of handing it over.

The next prize of the night was collected by the MAPFRE skipper in the Volvo Ocean Race, Xabi Fernández from Gipuzkoa, winner of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award for the best sailor of the year. The president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez, congratulated him on having received an award that rewards, in a special way, his participation, as the only Spanish representative, in the latest edition of the America’s Cup.

And the Terras Gauda National Sailing Award for the institution of the year went in this edition to the Military Naval School of Marin, for the work it has carried out, for three centuries, in the scientific, humanistic, military and seafaring training of the officers of the Spanish Navy. The jury that awards the awards has also wanted to recognize with this award the fact that the School has become, throughout its history, one of the main generators of scientific knowledge in Spain, in matters as closely related to the nautical world as cartography, meteorology, geodesy, engineering, hydrography, oceanography or astronomy, among others. The Commander-in-Chief of the Naval Military School of Marín, José María Núñez Torrente, received the award from the president of Bodegas Terras Gauda, José María Fonseca Moretón, in the year that marks the 300th anniversary of his birth.

The National Sailing Awards gala ended with a great party at the Monte Real Club de Yates facilities, in which all the winners, authorities, and participants in the 32nd Prince of Asturias Trophy were able to enjoy a great night in Baiona, which included dinner, music and fireworks.
