The Bribón Movistar classic and the Evelina, first leaders of the 525th Anniversary of the Arribada Regatta

· The classic Bribón Movistar skippered by Olympian Jane Abascal took the lead in the 6-meter classic category after signing two victories on the first day of competition held this Saturday in the Bay of Baiona

· In the Open category of modern boats, the Finnish boat Evelina won, led by Henrik Andersin, who has been training for months with the Spanish fleet for the European Championship to be held next September in France

· Pedro Campos premiered the new Bribón Movistar in competition with very good feelings about the structural changes made to the boat and managed to be the fastest boat in its category to complete the tests

· The Regatta of the 525th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Baiona City Council ends tomorrow, Sunday in Baiona with the last two races of the competition and the award ceremony

The Rascal Movistar Classic of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, skippered by the Olympic sailor Jane Abascal, was placed this Saturday as the leader of the Regatta for the 525th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Carabela Pinta, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Baiona City Council to commemorate the event.

The boat built by José Cusí, who last year was proclaimed world champion in the 6-meter class with King Juan Carlos as skipper, managed to lead the classification after signing two victories in the two races held in the Bay of Baiona .

It also did so with a certain margin over its most direct rival, Violeta Álvarez’s Mena , of the Royal Yacht Squadron, who has the provisional silver pending what happens on the final day tomorrow, Sunday.

The following positions were alternated, in the different races, by Aida skippered by Paloma Botas and Javier de la Gándara at the tiller, who came in fourth in the first test and third in the second; and the Alibaba II of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, led by Miguel Lago, who opened the competition with third place and finally fell to fourth.

In the category of the Open, the most modern boats in the fleet, the victory of the day went to the Finnish Evelina , owned by Henrik Andersin. It is the first foreign boat that joined the Spanish 6-meter fleet to prepare for the European next September in France, and it seems that it has taken the navigation measures very well in the Rías Baixas.

In the regatta he managed to beat the Bribón Movistar of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, which Pedro Campos tested this Saturday for the first time in competition after the modifications made to the boat. Structural changes that, according to Campos, have allowed them to already see results in the water.

“The sensations -says the historical pattern- they are very positive. Today, for example, although we couldn’t win due to a mess with an off-line, measuring times we have seen that we have been the fastest, and above all, we have rolled the boat, which was our priority. Tomorrow – assures Campos- we will go out with different sails and we will readjust all the details that we have been detecting this afternoon in the tests” .

The provisional podium of the Open class is completed by the May Be XIV of the Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena, skippered by Eugenio Galdon.

The competition ends tomorrow, Sunday, with the last two tests, starting at half past twelve, and the awards ceremony for the winners, at five in the afternoon at the Monte Real Club de Yates facilities.

The Monte Real brings together sailing history to commemorate the Arribada

The Monte Real Club de Yates will bring great figures of sailing in Spain to Baiona this weekend to commemorate that the Galician fishing village was the first in the old world to receive the news of the discovery of America. The Arrival of Pinzón to Baiona aboard the caravel Pinta, in 1493, has been the perfect excuse to bring together, 525 years later, historic sailors around a classic boat competition.

Among them we will see a history of Spanish sport, the Olympic sailor Jane Abascal, one of the first gold medalists in an Olympics (Moscow, 1980, in the Flying Dutchman class). The 66-year-old from Santander has also been the Spanish champion of the Snipe class, the Vaurien world champion and, in 1994, he received the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit. After haggling with King Juan Carlos last September in the Prince of Asturias Trophy, Abascal returns to Baiona to take charge of Bribón Movistar .

Jane Abascal haggled with HM King Juan Carlos last year in Baiona

The new Rogue XVI , which debuts tomorrow, Saturday in competition, will be taken care of by one of its main promoters, Galician Pedro Campos, another of the national sailing legends and the only sailor to have won five consecutive world championships. The president of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo is an old acquaintance from Monte Real, of which he is also a member, as he was the patron of the first Spanish team to participate in the Copa América after the challenge presented by the club from Baiona. In the 525th Anniversary Regatta , he will focus on testing all the technological innovations that have been added to the new Rogue , such as a 14-meter fiberglass pole or a steering wheel that replaces the usual rod.

Pedro Campos will be in charge of debuting the new Bribón in competition

Campos en el agua will have to deal with another legend, also Galician, Javier de la Gándara, from Vigo, who will take command of the Aída, a 1939 ship that has been the fastest in the German fleet of its class . After several seasons focused on regattas in the J80 class, Gándara now enters the 6-meter class with the aim of demonstrating, once again, his great ability to masterfully control any type of sailboat. In his youth he stood out in 420 and Snipe, and over the years he added marks to his record in different boats and competitions. His speed record in the Tour of the World in 1989, his victory in the Rolex Fastnet Race in 1993 and also in the Tour of Europe explain why he is one of the most successful sailors in the world.

The historic Javier de la Gándara will compete aboard the Aída

Along with Campos and De la Gándara, there is a third Galician skipper whose sports curriculum gives him a prominent place in the competition, Miguel Lago from Vigo. Winner of the Fastnet Race on the Galicia 93 Pescanova and a Tour of Europe aboard the WOR 60 ocean class, Lago can also boast of having achieved three victories in the prestigious Sardinia Cup and several world championships. He has sailed on the Telefónica , has been a crew member on the Bribón , and has crossed the Atlantic on more than one occasion. Completed the Route of Discovery aboard the Santa Maria, the first catamaran built entirely in Spain; and years later, in 2013, he repeated the feat aboard the VO70 MAPFRE, with which he managed to set a new record on the route, crossing the Atlantic Ocean between Palos de la Frontera and San Salvador in 11 days 7 hours. 38 minutes and 40 seconds.

Miguel Lago in Alibabá II in the latest edition of the Prince of Asturias Trophy

In the Regatta of the 525th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta to Baiona , Lago will compete leading the crew of the Alibabá II, the sailboat of the British owner Peter Dubens, of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, with which two years ago he won the Prince Trophy of Asturias.

Among the rest of the skippers will be the naval engineer Iñigo Echenique aboard the Caprice , from the Club Marítimo de Canido, a ship restored after it was found abandoned in a chicken coop. Cesar Elizaga will take charge of the Ian , a ship from 1929, one of the oldest in the fleet; and the commander of Iberia Mauricio Sánchez-Bella will do the same with the Titia , which last year was proclaimed runner-up in the world. The Evelina of the Finnish Henrik Anderson or the Mena will be other boats that enter the competition.

The tests of the Regatta 525 Anniversary of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta will begin tomorrow Saturday at half past twelve in the Bay of Baiona and, thanks to the proximity to the coast of the regatta field, they can be seen from the sandbanks and mountains more next.

The new Bribón premieres this weekend in Baiona

· The sailboat in which King Juan Carlos sails will be one of the boats that compete in the Regatta 525 Anniversary of the Arrival of the Carabela Pinta organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Baiona City Council to commemorate the event

· Built at the Garrido Shipyards and completed at the Rodman Shipyards, the sailboat has recently been remodeled and this weekend will test its many technological advances in competition, such as a fiberglass mast that is unique in its class

· In the 525th Anniversary Regatta of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta , boats of the 6m class will participate exclusively, both classic (built before the 1950s) and modern (built from the 1970s)

The fishing village of Baiona has been the setting chosen for the first competition test of the new Bribón , a unique sailboat among its class (6m International) and the first of its kind to be built in the last 15 years.

After completing its construction last year at the Garrido shipyards and recently being remodeled at the Rodman shipyards, the ship will be one of those participating in the Regatta 525th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Caravel Pinta , organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Baiona City Council to commemorate the event.

The new Bribón boasts of having a marked Galician accent, since in addition to being built and remodeled in Galician shipyards, it has Javier Cela behind it, responsible for site engineering; and the historic sailor Pedro Campos, as its main promoter.

“As a result of the recovery of the class in Sanxenxo, we decided to embark on the construction of a new boat with which we could show Galicia’s strategic position in the sector and all its technological capacity. And the new rascal – says Pedro Campos – is the best example of what we are capable of doing in Galicia.”

Among the numerous technological advances that have been applied to the sailboat, designed by Juan K, is a fiberglass mast, the first of its kind to be built in the entire history of the 6m. The intention was to be able to debut it in the world championship held last year in Vancouver (Canada), where King Juan Carlos became world champion in the 6m class, but they did not manage to arrive on time and finally it will be in Galicia where he haggles for first time.

The goal is to test the boat and its innovations ahead of the European Championship to be held in the Brittany town of La Trinité (France) next September, in which the monarch emeritus plans to participate.

Before that, next weekend, we will see him compete in the Regatta 525 Aniversario de la Arribada de la Caravel Pinta , which will continue throughout the weekend. The tests, in which boats of the 6m class will participate exclusively, both in its classic and modern versions, will be held inside the bay of Baiona, very close to the coast, with the aim that anyone who wants to You can enjoy the beauty of sailing these sailboats.

In the official presentation of the event, held this morning at the Monte Real Club de Yates, the vice president of the club, Alejandro Retolaza, showed “very proud that Baiona has been the place chosen for the first official competition of the new Rogue, and that it is also done in such an important regatta -he said- with which one of the most important anniversaries of the fishing village is commemorated”.

The president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez, stressed the close collaboration that the club has had for years with the Baiona city council, with the aim of “making our town a unique place to visit, to live in, to sail and enjoy with the candle”.

The mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal, looked back and recalled the Discovery Regatta that Monte Real organized in 1972 and the challenge that it presented years later to the America’s Cup to highlight Baiona’s relations with the American continent and talk of the prolific history of the club in the organization of regattas, something that, according to “guarantees that this weekend’s event will be a complete success.”

At the press conference held this morning at the Monte Real Yacht Club, the deputy delegate for sports from the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Consuelo Besada, and the provincial head of the Xunta de Galicia’s sports service, Daniel Benavides, also took part. Also present were the councilor for culture in Baiona, María Iglesias; and the director of Bodegas Terras Gauda, Enrique Costas, and the managing director of PSA Retail Vigo, Daniel Martín, as collaborators of the event.

The booming 6m class from Galicia to the world

The 6m had its golden age in the 1920s and 1930s, when they led international regattas, and even competed in the Olympic Games in Paris (1924) and, later, in Helsinki (1952).

In Spain there was an important fleet, especially in the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean, which achieved a certain reputation in Europe, but in the 50s and 60s, with the arrival of lighter classes and less expensive construction, they ceased to be so attractive. , and did not regain their popularity until the 1980s.

Today, the momentum of the class is more than evident, with a notable growth of the national and international fleet, and in this panorama, Galicia, and in particular Sanxenxo, has been acquiring more and more prominence. Numerous owners and crews have trusted Pedro Campos and his firm commitment to the class, and have chosen Galicia to keep their boats in Galician ports, repair them in Galician companies and compete in the Galician estuaries.

The Maui Jim is crowned the new J80 Spanish champion at the Repsol Trophy

The crew of the Real Club Marítimo de Santander, led by Javier Aguado, won the championship this year after finishing third in 2017

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen was the best in the Galician fleet and achieved a meritorious third position in the championship organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club

· The Bosch Service Solutions of the Club Marítimo de Canido skippered by Santiago Estévez and Ramón Ojea won the grand prize of the Repsol Trophy

The Maui Jim Sunglasses of the Real Club Marítimo de Santander is the new champion of Spain in the J80 class after winning the national class that was held during the last four days in the bay of Baiona.

The Cantabrians, with Javier Aguado at the helm, picked up their winners’ scepter on Tuesday from Repsol’s Deputy Director of Marine and Fisheries, Carlos Sánchez Nieto, and José Luis Vázquez, president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, who this year held of organizing club and host of the national of the class.

After finishing third in last year’s edition, those from Santander managed to get rid of the thorn in the championship and took Cantabria the big prize in a very close competition, in which they barely beat their teammates by one point and one of their stronger rivals, Jaime Piris’s Mercury, who came second.

It has been a long championship, with all possible wind conditions to haggle. There are teams that have gone better in strong wind conditions and others with a breeze, but the ones that have triumphed are those that have been versatile in all situations”, declared Javier Aguado, skipper of the Maui Jim, who was also pleasantly surprised by the quality of the local fleet: “it has grown a lot and they have proven to be a benchmark with a very high competitive level”.

In fact, the bronze in the Spanish J80 Championship went to a local boat, the Okofen of the historic Javier de la Gándara, the best of the entire Galician fleet that competed in the Repsol Trophy. Wearing Monte Real necklace, the Galicians remained in the top positions from the beginning of the competition and finally achieved a meritorious third place.

In the competition for the big boats, the Cruiser-Racer Class , the victory went to Bosch Service Solutions, skippered in the first two races by Santiago Estévez and with its usual skipper, Ramón Ojea, in the final regatta. After a tough one-on-one with Pedro Pazos’ Oral Group Galimplant, the crew of Canido’s Elan 37, who had had to settle for silver in the previous edition, was finally able to win the Repsol Trophy gold. Those from Sanxenxo took second place and the Youkounkoun from the Portonovo Yacht Club, led by Eduardo Segade, was third.

In the Cruiser Class the roles were also reversed with respect to the 2017 edition. The Balea Dous de Rodeira, who had been second then, took the victory this year; and the winner of the previous edition, Jean Claude Sarrade’s Fend la Bise, from the Monte Real Club de Yates, won silver. Both received their award from the Mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal, who also presented the bronze to Albarellos de Fernando Rey, from the Portonovo Yacht Club.

In Class A Two , victory went to Vigo at the hands of Salaño Dos, skippered by Jacobo Vecino and with Brenda Maure completing the crew. With two first places and one second in the three contested races, they emerged victorious and got the best score for the Rías Baixas de A Dos Circuit , a new five-event competition created this year by the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Real Club Náutico de Portosín, the Náutico de Portonovo and the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas. The Ay Carmela of Juan Martínez-Pazo and Rafael Martínez-Almeida, of the Portonovo Yacht Club, won the silver trophy and the bronze went to Javier Rey and Jorge Justo aboard the Q Talento Consultores, of the Monte Real Club of yachts.

In the J70 Class, which participated in the Repsol Trophy for the second consecutive year, the winner was Noticia by José María “Pichu” Torcida, from the Real Club Marítimo de Santander, who sealed the rankings on the last day, rising from fourth to first position, and leaving Alfredo González’s Marina Rubicón in second and Luis Bugallo’s Marnatura in third.

In the Figaro Class , in which boats from the Monte Real Club de Yates competed exclusively, the victory went to the Serralleiras, skippered by Elena Raga, who signed two first places in the three contested races. Alberto Iglesias managed to place Erizana in second place and Octavio Villalba’s Tutatis completed the podium.

Once the Repsol Trophy is over, the Monte Real Yacht Club is preparing for its next competition, the 525th Anniversary of the Arrival of the Caravel la Pinta regatta, which will be held on May 12 and 13 in Baiona. The event will be presented next week and 6m class boats will participate exclusively. Among the participants will be the reigning world champion of the class, King Emeritus Don Juan Carlos de Borbón.

Maximum emotion in the national J80 that takes place in Baiona

· The third day played this Monday in the framework of the Repsol Trophy of the Monte Real Yacht Club turned the classification upside down and the podium remains open for the final rounds that will be held tomorrow

· The Cantabrian team from Maui Jim Sunglasses , led by Javier Aguado and wearing a pendant from the Real Club Marítimo de Santander, rose to first place in the championship, ousting the Basques from AD Grupo Garatu

Olympian Jaime Piris’s Mercury slipped into second place, leaving Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen and Jesus Amaliach’s La Gallofa tied on points in third and fourth position

· After a day of rest, the rest of the fleet participating in the Repsol Trophy will return to the water tomorrow, Tuesday, to participate in the final test and the awards ceremony that will be held in the afternoon at the Monte Real Club de Yates

Maximum emotion in the Spanish Championship of the J80 Class that is being held these days in Baiona and that lived its third and penultimate day this Monday marked by a great rivalry in the water, with the crews giving their best to win the great state award.

After the bad weather conditions recorded on the second day, with a lot of rain and rough seas, the day dawned today sunny but with very little wind at the scheduled time for the start of the day, which caused several postponements before being able to give the starts to the three tests that were finally held.

Among the fleet, a lot of irregularity and very different positions in the contested races. There was no clear protagonist, and there were many upsets in the provisional classification, which left the podium wide open for the final day that will take place tomorrow, Tuesday.

The Cantabrians of Maui Jim Sunglasses , led by Javier Aguado, and wearing a Real Club Marítimo de Santander pendant, rose to first place in the championship, unseating the Basques from AD Grupo Garatu , which fell to fifth place. “We like to see ourselves in the lead and we will try to play our cards well for the final, but there are still tests and everything is very close” assured Aguado after seeing himself as the winner.

The leader of Maui Jim found the wind roles registered today in the Bay of Baiona complicated, something that Galician Javier de la Gándara also suffered with his Okofen. After first crossing the finish line in the first test, he suffered two bad rolls that prevented him from achieving the results he expected. “It is a very strong fleet, very competitive, says Gándara., and when the wind drops, it compacts and navigation becomes complicated”.

The Galician team is third behind the Mercury of the Olympian Jaime Piris; and tied on points with the fourth classified, which is La Gallofa de Jesus Amaliach, both from the Real Club Marítimo de Santander.

Thus, the Cantabrian fleet is, for the moment, the strongest in the national J80 that takes place in Baiona, with three boats cast in the Top Five, two of them with provisional gold and silver.

The competition ends tomorrow, Tuesday, with the last tests of the championship, on a day in which the rest of the boats participating in the Repsol Trophy will go out on the water again, both in the ORC classes (cruiser-race, cruiser and two) and the Figaro class.

The final point will be the awards ceremony for the winners that will be held at four in the afternoon at the facilities of the Monte Real Club de Yates, which acts as host and organizer.

Hard fight between Basques and Cantabrians for the J80 Spanish Championship

· On the second day of the competition held this Sunday in Baiona, the Cantabrians from Maui Jim Sunglasse came within just one point of the Basques from AD Garatu , who continue to lead the national one-design race

· Two other boats from the Real Club Marítimo de Santander, La Gallosa and Mercury , took positions to take over the podium, placing third and fourth, unseating Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen from Galicia.

· In the competition of the ORCs that compete for the maximum emotion Repsol Trophy with Bosch Service Solutions and the Oral Group Galimplant tied on points in the cruiser-regatta class, and the Balea Dous and the Fend la Bise tied in the cruiser class

In the rest of the classes, the leaders of the provisional classification are Salaño Dos de Vigo (A Dos), Noticia de Santander (J70) and Serralleiras de Baiona (Fígaro).

· Tomorrow, Monday, the J80s return to the water to compete in the third and penultimate day of testing while the rest of the fleet rests to race the final stage during the May Day holiday

Hard fight between Basques and Cantabrians for the J80 Spanish Championship that this Sunday saw its second day in the waters of the Bay of Baiona, framed in the Repsol Trophy of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

On a day of overcast skies, many downpours and rough seas, the Cantabrians of the Maui Jim Sunglasses , from the Real Club Marítimo de Santander, managed to come within just one point of the Basques of the AD Garatu , who are still leaders despite signing a fifth and sixth place today in the two contested races.

“We would have signed before leaving to finish the day like this, as leaders” , assured the Gipuzkoan skipper, Iker Almandoz, after finishing today’s tests. “The regatta starts again tomorrow and it’s going to be a lot of fun, because there are boats that are fighting very hard for the championship. I can only say that the atmosphere is great and that there are many crews sailing really well”.

Favored by the application of a discard, another team from Santander, La Gallofa , took possession of the third position in the championship this afternoon, from which they ousted Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen who, in fifth position, continue to be the best placed in all the Galician fleet.

And completing the top five of the classification, in fourth place, is another Cantabrian boat, the Mercury of the Olympian Jaime Piris, who seeks to repeat a title they achieved in 2011 after having failed last year, in which they were runners-up.

Other monotypes competing for the Monte Real Repsol Trophy, the J70s, returned to compete this Sunday at the Cíes Islands anchorage, where two tests were held with very changeable conditions, with a lot of wind at times and calm at others.

El Noticia de José María “Pichu” Torcida sentenced the day with a brilliant performance and two first places that helped him rise from fourth position to the head of the classification. Luis Bugallo’s Marnatura , which came first, fell to third place and Alfredo González’s Marina Rubicón remained second.

In the cruise competition, which faced a longer route than in the initial stage, sailing to the Tofiño lighthouse, the crews that were in second position managed to jump to first place. They are, yes, tied on points with the seconds, so the emotion is maximum for the final day on Tuesday.

Bosch Service Solutions from Canido, which was second in the cruiser-regatta class, is now in the lead after unseating Oral Group Galimplant from Sanxenxo. And the Balea Dous de Rodeira managed to take first place in the cruiser class, beating the Fend la Bise de Baiona.

In class A Two, all the participants repeated the same positions they had achieved on the first day, so the general classification remains intact, with the Salaño Dos by Jacobo Vecino and Brenda Maure in the lead, followed by Q Talent Consultants , from the Monte Real Yacht Club; and of Oh Carmela from the Bouzas Maritime Lyceum.

In the Figaro class, pending what happens on the final day on Tuesday, the provisional podium is occupied by Elena Raga’s Serralleiras, Alberto Iglesias’ Erizana and Octavio Villalba’s Tutatis , all from Monte Real Club de Yates.

Tomorrow, Monday, will be a rest day for the entire fleet, except for the J80s, which will continue to compete in the Spanish Championship starting at eleven in the morning. In the afternoon, starting at five o’clock, the Monte Real Yacht Club will once again offer participants a seafood dinner and a tasting of beers and gin and tonics.

The forty-first edition of the traditional Monte Real Yacht Club Spring Regatta got off to a strong start, which this year is once again the Repsol Trophy and hosts the J80 class Spanish Championship.

On the first day of tests for the national title, held this Saturday in Baiona, the contenders for the title of the J80 monotypes competed for three tasks inside the Bay of Baiona. They did so in very good conditions, on a day with little cloudiness with a northwesterly wind that remained stable and always above 12 knots, even reaching 15 at times.

The Basques from the AD Grupo Garatu, armed by Juan Vázquez, were the protagonists of the day, with a brilliant performance in all the tests. With Iker Almandoz at the helm, the sailboat manned by Íñigo Jáuregui, Íñigo Sánchez and Borja Ponte, signed three first places in the three routes and became leader of the classification.

In second position was another of the favorites to win the championship, Javier Aguado’s Maui Jim Sunglasses. The Menorcans, with aspirations to revalidate the title they won in 2016, started somewhat weakly, with a fourth place in the first test, but managed to overcome the following ones and with two seconds they took over the provisional silver.

The Galician crew of the Okofen, led by the historic Javier de la Gándara, closes the provisional podium. Wearing the organizing club’s pendant, Gándara and his team demonstrated why they were the best J80 Galician team last season.

In addition to the J80s that are competing for the Spanish Championship of the class, cruisers, figaros and J70s participate in the Repsol Trophy this 2018, and all of them took to the water on this first day of competition. For the former, the regatta committee designed a route of just over 13 miles through the Vigo estuary, which was hotly contested in the cruising-regatta and cruising classes.

The Oral Group Galimplant of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, skippered by Pedro Pazos, won on this first day by just 7 seconds, which it managed to beat Bosch Service Solutions of the Club Marítimo de Canido, which is second overall in the cruise class- race. One of the boats that promised to put up a fight in the competition, Rui Ramada’s MBA Atlántico, had to withdraw shortly after the start due to a problem between the Carallones and La Negra beacons.

In the cruise class, the leadership is for the Fend la Bise of Jean Claude Sarrade, of the Monte Real Club de Yates; which is closely followed by one of its biggest competitors, the Balea Dous of Luis Pérez, of the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira.

In class A Dos, after a spectacular start and start of the route, Victor Carrión and Ana Sardiña’s Menudeta had to withdraw from the test due to a problem with the spy, leaving Jacobo Vecino and Brenda Maure’s Salaño Dos and Q Talento Javier Rey and Jorge Justo fighting for first place. Finally it was the Salaño who was placed at the top of the provisional podium.

In the Figaro class, which also completed a coastal route of about 13 miles, the victory of the day went to Elena Raga’s Serralleiras. The Erizana skippered by Alberto Iglesias and the Silleiro of José García de Miguel, are second and third respectively.

And in the J70 competition, which took place at the Cíes Islands anchorage, the provisional classification was very close, with the first four boats separated by just one point of difference. José Luis Freire’s Marnatura, skippered by the young Luis Bugallo, is in the lead with 8 points. It is followed by the Marina Rubicón of Alfredo González, with 9; and Denis Cherevalenko’s Joy Full, who arrived from Tallinn, closes the provisional podium with 10.

The Repsol Trophy continues tomorrow, Sunday, in Baiona with the second day of tests at an earlier time. At eleven o’clock in the morning, the starting horn will be given, inside the bay of Baiona, to the first of the three races scheduled in the J80 Spanish Championship. An hour later, at twelve noon, the tests of the J70 will begin at the Cíes Islands anchorage; and at one o’clock it will be the turn of the cruisers and the figaros, who will once again dispute a coastal tour of the Rías Baixas. In the afternoon, once the competition on the water is over, the Monte Real Yacht Club will offer the crews participating in the Repsol Trophy a seafood dinner and a beer and gin and tonic tasting.

The J80 national title in contention

· Cantabria, the Balearic Islands, Galicia and the Basque Country will participate in the contest for the national J80 that will be held until May 1 in the waters of Baiona

· The Galicians De la Gándara and Lago, the Cantabrian Piris or the Balearic Chacártegui and Aguado are among the favorites to win the title

· After a day of measurements and revisions, tomorrow, Saturday, the competition begins in the framework of the 41st Spring Regatta of the Monte Real Yacht Club

· In addition to the national J80, the Galician Rías Baixas will host until May 1 the cruiser, Figaros and J70 competitions for the Repsol Trophy

Traditionally, the J80 class does not sell its national and international titles cheaply and everything indicates that the XII Spanish J80 Championship, which will be held starting tomorrow Saturday in Baiona as part of the Repsol Trophy of Monte Real, is going to present a tough contest between the boats that will haggle for the scepter.

Cantabria with four J80 monotypes, the Balearic Islands with two, Galicia with nearly a fortnight and the Basque Country with one representative, present credentials for the dispute over the Spanish Championship for the competitive J80 boats.

The intense activity that the Cantabrian, Galician and Basque fleets have developed throughout the autumn and winter, under an intense program of regattas in their respective venues, presumes intense competition. After a day of measurements and reviews, the tests for the national title begin this Saturday at three in the afternoon.

Favorites with impeccable track record

The local Javier de la Gándara and his team aboard the Okofen and the J80 Virazón de Miguel Lago will put their great performance in recent months and their knowledge of the area’s regatta course into play against other rivals who will go all out.

This is the case of the Cantabrian Mercury of Jaime Piris, runner-up in Spain 2017, or the Maui Jim Sunglasses of the Menorcan Javier Aguado who closed the national podium last year. In addition, we must take into account the AD Garatu Basque team skippered by Juan Vázquez, third classified in the prestigious French regatta Spi Ouest 2018.

From the Balearic Islands, Ibo.es de Chacártegui will try to revalidate the national victory it achieved in 2016. The two-time world champion team from Cantabria, Aila, normally skippered by José María Torcida, will present a new skipper in the fight for the national title.

In total, more than twenty J80 monotypes that until Tuesday, May 1, will fight relentlessly to register their name in a national benchmark at a sporting level due to their great competitive level and that is part of the Repsol Trophy of the Monte Real Yacht Club. from Baiona.

Cruisers, figaros and J70 compete for “spring”

Forty-one years in 2018 one of the competitions with the longest run of the Monte Real Yacht Club, the Spring Regatta, which once again becomes the Repsol Trophy thanks to the sponsorship of the energy company, turns forty-one years old.

In this forty-first edition, in addition to the contest for the national J80, we will see some of the most outstanding cruisers in the Galician nautical scene compete, such as the Fend la Bise by Jean Claude Sarrade or the Gaias Clinic by José María Peinó, both champions Galician solitaires and two.

Also competing for the three scheduled coastal cruisers will be the recent winners of the Monte Real Winter Regatta, the Atlantic MBA of the Portuguese Rui Ramada; the Oral Group of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo skippered by Pedro Pazos; and the Balea Dous by Luis Pérez, wearing the Rodeira nautical pendant.

Among the J70, which will compete at the Cíes Islands anchorage during the weekend, renowned sailors such as Pichu Torcida, Rayco Tabares or Luis Bugallo, in addition to the Pérez Canal brothers. Completing the classes of the trophy are the Figaros, a fleet in which the monotypes of Monte Real will be the protagonists.

Victory of the Atlantic MBA in the Comunica Trophy

Outstanding Portuguese skipper Rui Ramada led the Atlantic MBA crew to victory in the first major cruise competition of the spring season

· The MBA won the Vigo-Baiona route along with Luis Pérez’s Balea Dous, who took one of the competition’s gold medals to Rodeira for the second consecutive year

· Pedro Pazos’ Oral Group once again demonstrated its power in the water and was the best on the Sanxenxo-Baiona route, achieving another of the trophy podiums

· In the J80 class the winner was Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva, and the Erizana skippered by the very young sailor from Vigo Marta Rego won the Figaro class

The Atlantic MBA skippered by the outstanding Portuguese sailor Rui Ramada was proclaimed the winner, this Saturday in the Rías Baixas, of the Comunica Trophy, the first major cruise competition of the spring season, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club with the collaboration of the Royal Sanxenxo Nautical Club and the Royal Nautical Club of Vigo.

In the trophy, which this year changed its design and was held with a double start format from Sanxenxo and Vigo, more than 200 sailors participated aboard the 34 registered boats. A fleet that had to face complicated conditions due to the wind, which disappeared at times and left them floating in calm conditions that lasted up to an hour and a half.

The boats that started as favorites stood out from the first moments. After the start honk in Sanxenxo, Pedro Pazos’ Oral Group was quickly placed at the head of the fleet, and with a very good navigation managed to revalidate the victory achieved in the previous edition. Adolfo Castro’s Youkounkoun, from the Portonovo Yacht Club, came third in the classification for the Sanxenxo-Baiona track, which is almost 16 miles long.

The route was shorter for the sailboats that started in Vigo at two in the afternoon, one hour after the ones from Sanxenxo. They sailed just over 9 and a half miles to Carallones, where the regatta committee decided to shorten the course after suffering a great calm in Toralla.

Divided into two classes according to their competitive ability, those who finally took the victory were the Atlantic MBA of Rui Ramada del Monte Real; and Luis Pérez’s Balea Dous, who came ready to repeat his triumph, and took Rodeira back with the gold he had already achieved in 2017.

Behind the Atlantic MBA were La Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez, from Monte Real; and the Bosch Service Solutions of the Club Marítimo de Canido, skippered by Ramón Ojea. And below the Balea Dous, in the second class of the Vigo-Baiona route, were the Juliana by Deep Blue by Vicence Cid, with a pendant from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo; and the Q Talento of Javier Rey, from the Monte Real Yacht Club, silver and bronze of the Comunica Trophy.

In the J80 class, victory went to Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva; and second and third place for Cansino by Manuel Fernández and Boy de Canto by Carlos Hernández.

The Erizana of the very young sailor from Vigo, Marta Rego, prevailed in the Figaros competition, ahead of the Ladeira of Carlos Castelao and the Silleiro of Ramón Palao.

At the awards ceremony for the winners, held at the Monte Real Club de Yates once the competition in the water had finished, several executives from Comunica, the company sponsoring the trophy, participated. Among them were its executive director, Roberto Lira; the financial director, Jorge Berridy or Vânia Marlise, art director of the visual communication firm.

After putting an end to the Comunica Trophy, the Monte Real Yacht Club is now preparing for another of its great events this year, the Repsol Trophy, which will be held next weekend. The traditional spring regatta of the Baionese club hosts this year the Spanish Championship of the J80 class, which will be attended by monotypes from all over the peninsula. The appointment is on April 28, 29 and 30, and May 1.

The Rías Baixas will witness this Saturday the dispute of the Comunica Trophy

· More than 200 sailors aboard the 31 participating sailboats will compete in the first major cruise competition of the Monte Real Yacht Club in 2018
· Among the contenders for the title, the Oral Group of Pedro Pazos (Sanxenxo) and the Balea Dous of Luis Pérez (Rodeira) repeat winners of the previous edition
After leaving Sanxenxo (1:00 p.m.) and Vigo (2:00 p.m.), the fleet is scheduled to start crossing the finish line in the bay of Baiona at five in the afternoon

The Rías Baixas will witness tomorrow, Saturday, the dispute over the Comunica Trophy, one of the most outstanding cruise events in the spring nautical calendar in Galicia, in which more than 200 regattas will participate aboard the 31 sailboats registered so far. This is the first major cruise trophy of the Monte Real Club de Yates in 2018, which also has the collaboration of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo and the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, hosting the departures of the fleet in front of their facilities.

The double start, from Sanxenxo and from Vigo, is the main novelty of this year’s Comunica Trophy, and it will take place one hour apart. At one in the afternoon the horn will sound in the vicinity of the Juan Carlos I marina, in Sanxenxo; and an hour later, at two o’clock, it will be the start in front of the port of Vigo. Both fleets will end up coming together on a route that will end in the bay of Baiona.

Among the contenders for the title we will see the winner of the previous edition in the cruiser-regatta category, the Oral Group, from the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, who returns to the competition with Pedro Pazos at the controls and eager to repeat victory. The winner of the previous year in the cruise category will also compete, Luis Pérez’s Balea Dous, who will try to win one of the trophy prizes from the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira.

Among the J80 participants will be some of the monotypes that at the end of the month will compete in the Spanish Championship of the class held in Baiona, such as Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino or Luis de Mira’s Namasté . And in the Figaro class we will see some of the youngest sailors, since the sailboats will be crewed mainly by students from the Monte Real Club de Yates Sailing School.

If everything goes according to plan, the navigation of the fleet will be more or less agile and the fastest ships could have completed the journey in just over three hours, so that from five in the afternoon they would begin to see the first candles in the vicinity of the Baiones breakwater, where the finish line will be placed.

For all those who wish to follow the competition, the Juan Carlos I marina and the beaches closest to that area will be the points with the best visibility to see the departure of the fleet from Sanxenxo, while the departure from Vigo can be seen from the surroundings of the boat. The Costa de la Vela, the westernmost of the Morrazo peninsula, will be another of the places from which to enjoy sailing the sailboats, as well as the interior of the Bay of Baiona, the end point of the route.

Sanxenxo, Vigo and Baiona united by the Comunica Trophy

· The cruise competition of the Monte Real Yacht Club changes its format this year and adds the Sanxenxo-Baiona coastal route to the Vigo-Baiona route that was being held

· Both tests will be held next Saturday afternoon and one-design sailboats of the J80 and Fígaro class will also be able to participate

· The visual communication company of A Guarda Comunica sponsors and names for the second consecutive year the trophy that opens the cruise calendar in Baiona

The Comunica Trophy will unite this Saturday the fishing towns of Sanxenxo, Vigo and Baiona in what will be the first major cruise competition organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club in 2018.

With the collaboration of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, the Real Club Náutico de Vigo and the Galician Sailing Federation, the Baiona club changes the format of the trophy this year and adds a new coastal route to the Vigo-Baiona route, between Sanxenxo and Baiona.

There will therefore be two starting points with different distances to the same arrival point. The sailboats that listen to the starting line in the port of Lilac will have to complete about 18 miles to the bay of Baiona, and those that do the same from the Vigo yacht will have a journey of about 12 miles ahead of them.

If the wind is allied with the organization and allows the scheduled program to be fulfilled, the regatta committee will start at one in the afternoon for the Sanxenxo fleet and at two for the Vigo fleet, and will set some obligatory points of passage until the finish line, which will be located near the Baiona breakwater.
In addition to cruiser and cruiser-regatta type sailboats, J80 and Fígaros class one-designs may participate in the competition, which will take place in real time; and there will also be an Open class for boats with less competitive capacity.

In the absence of several days for the registration period to close, which will remain open until the day before the development of the tests, some of the most outstanding sailing cruisers in Galicia have already confirmed their presence in the competition, such as the Fend la Bise by Jean Claude Sarrade, current Galician champion of solitaire and two; La Burla Negra, by Juan José Martínez; or the Bosch Service Solutions, of Commodore de Canido, Ramón Ojea. A large number of J80s will also participate, as they continue to prepare for the Spanish Championship of the class to be held in Baiona at the end of April.

Once the trophy tests are finished, the prizes will be awarded to the winners, in an event that will be held at the Monte Real Club de Yates and in which, among others, representatives of the organizing club and Comunica, the sponsoring company, will participate. It is a visual communication firm that offers its services throughout Galicia from the municipality of A Guarda, where its headquarters are located.

In the last edition of the Comunica Trophy, the Oral Group Galimplant, from the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, skippered by Pedro Pazos; and the Balea Dous of the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira, led by Luis Pérez; in the Cruise-Regatta and Cruise categories respectively. In the one-design competition, the prizes stayed in Baiona, with the victory of two boats from the Monte Real Club de Yates. Manuel María Cunha’s Marías won in the J80 class, and Silleiro, with Santi Meigide in the lead, in the Figaro class.
