The fishing village of Baiona hosted this Saturday, for the fourth consecutive year, the celebration of the Solidarity Vertiathlon, a charity triathlon organized with the aim of raising funds for the Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club.
On a day in which the fog wanted to be the protagonist, more than 200 athletes from all over Galicia participated in a sports challenge of 750 meters swimming, 20 kilometers cycling and 5 kilometers running, which the fastest could complete without crossing the time border.
59 minutes and 7 seconds was the great mark of Denis Incutti, winner of the fourth edition of the Vertiathlon in the absolute category. The athlete, from the Riveira Swimming Club, cemented his victory in the race, in which he managed to get a greater advantage over his competitors, completing the 5 kilometers around the Parador Nacional de Baiona in just 17 minutes and 36 seconds.
Second and third place went to Xoel Rodríguez, from the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club, and Pedro Pablo Bernardez, from the Vilagaría Atenas Running Triathlon, who crossed the finish line separated by just 5 seconds. They also did it less than 30 seconds from the winner, which demonstrates the high quality of the participants and the great rivalry that could be seen in the Baiona triathlon.
María Lois, from the Arcade Infohouse in Santiago, climbed to the top of the women’s podium in the absolute category, with a mark of one hour, 12 minutes and 9 seconds. After collecting the award, he recognized that swimming was the worst test he had, but he managed to regain the lead with the bicycle and in the last 500 meters of the race was where he sentenced. Antía Pazos from the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club and María Casaleiro with a one-day license closed the trio of winners with silver and bronze in the absolute women’s category.
The first places in the veterans category were signed by Pedro Pablo Bernárdez, from the Vilagarcía Atenas Running Triathlon, who finished the test in one hour and 35 seconds; Xacob Agra, on one-day leave; and Juan Agrasar, from the Galician Motorbike of Pontevedra.
In the junior division, the winners were the same ones who took the victory in the absolute category: Denis Incutti and María Lois. And the second positions were occupied by Cibrán Leal, from the Galician Motorbike of Pontevedra; and Marta Rial, from the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club.
The fastest among the youngest athletes, grouped in the cadet class, was Xoel Rodríguez, from the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club. He shared the podium with Xosé Pérez, from the Beariz Triathlon; and Yago Carballo, from the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club, who had to settle for silver and bronze respectively.
From the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club, the one that collected the most prizes in this fourth edition of the Baiona Solidarity Vertiathlon was also the winner of the female cadet category, Antía Pazos, with a mark of one hour and 12 minutes.

The councilor from Baiona was very proud of the success of the competition, which the city council has been co-organizing for four years with Monte Real Club de Yates and thanks to the sponsorship of Verti Seguros. “It is about –said Ángel Rodal- of a unique triathlon in Spain, since all the tests take place looking at the sea, in a place of indisputable beauty such as Baiona and, as if that were not enough, with a charitable purpose” , he assured.

Access to the parking lot and the walled enclosure of the Parador will also be controlled; and the taxi rank will be moved to Brasil street and the public transport stops to the Puga and health center areas.
“More than 40 percent of the registrations are one-day licenses, which very clearly represents the popular nature of the test, which is open to all those who want to collaborate with this magnificent solidarity initiative” – Óscar Surís, president of the Federation Galician Triathlon
“Behind the Vertiathlon there is a magnificent job that allows many children and people with disabilities to become intrepid sailors and enjoy the sea under equal conditions” – Daniel Benavides, head of the provincial sports service of the Xunta de Galicia

The Prince of Asturias Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Escuela Naval Militar with the sponsorship of ABANCA, crowned the champions this Sunday of an edition marked by the high level of the participating fleet. The best crews from Galicia and Portugal met one more year in the most important nautical competition in Galicia and did not disappoint in the water, giving a show until the end despite the complicated conditions that characterized this edition.
The wind wanted to be the protagonist and made it very difficult for a regatta committee that, during the three days that the competition lasted, had to adjust and readjust routes and tests so that the sailboats could compete for the trophy with the best possible conditions. Despite these difficulties, finally all the classes in contention were able to enjoy sailing through the Rías Baixas and fill in the classification boxes.
The big boats, ORC classes 0-1, 2 and 3, were blank on the first day of competition, but the second and third came out with a lot of enthusiasm and their tests could not have been more close. The ORC 4, Classics and Open were also left stranded by the wind shortly after the start of Saturday’s test, and today the ones most affected by Eolo’s whims were the one-designs, who were not allowed to compete in any of the scheduled heats.
The Pairo 8 revalidates the title in the MARTIN MILLER ORC 0-1 class
After having won the Rías just a few weeks ago, José Luis Freire’s Pairo 8 arrived in Baiona ready to add another victory in the Príncipe de Asturias and revalidate the title achieved in 2017, and with the four races held he was able to fulfill his wishes. “It was a very close competition since there were 4 or 5 boats in the class that are competing at a high level” assured the skipper of the Pairo and J70 Corinthian European champion Luis Bugallo. “Yesterday we and the April team separated us a bit from the rest and today the play went well for us and we were able to sentence” , he affirmed. The crew of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo won the title of the competition for tall ships, leaving in second place their teammate and most direct rival, the Aceites Abril of the brothers Luis and Jorge Canal. Led by Delmar and Renato Conde, the Portuguese from Porto de Aveiro embroidered the Clube Náutico Boca da Barra pendant in the third drawer of the podium.
Bosch Service Solutions wins in the APRIL ORC 2 OILS class
The Bosch Service Solutions of the Club Marítimo de Canido, with Ramón Ojea at the wheel, was the winner of the Aceites Abril ORC 2 class. The crew arrived at the final day in second position but the first place they achieved in the only test held this Sunday gave them the final victory. “We almost lost the race and in the end we managed to overtake and win by seconds. The truth is that it was a very close Principe, especially between the three boats that finally took the first prizes” commented Ramón Ojea after finishing the regatta. The second prize of the ORC 2 went to Riveira in the hands of Javier Durán’s Santorum & Martínez Group; and the third for Fran Edreira’s Inosa, from Marina Sada.
The Bunda wins the GADIS ORC 3 class
With three firsts in the four races held, Jacobo Solorzano’s Bunda took a more than deserved first prize in the Gadis ORC 3 class. Those from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña had Plan B led by Nuno Ribas on the attack at all times, but the Portuguese from Clube de Vela Atlántico were one point behind the winner and had to settle for climbing to second place on the podium. The trio of honor in the competition was completed by Luis García Trigo’s Unus, who haggled for the Monte Real Club de Yates.
The Balea Dous takes the VOLVO AUTESA ORC 4 class
The Balea Dous canguesa crew, with Luis Pérez at the controls, was the winner of the Volvo Autesa ORC 4 class, inscribing the name of the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira in the history of winners of the Prince of Asturias Trophy. The classification of the first three was completed by the Travesío – La Riviere Conservas de Pablo de la Riva, from the Náutico de Vilagarcía; and the Santiago Roma Rías Baixas by Iñaki Carbajo, from the Club Náutico de Beluso.
The Nautical School of Vigo triumphed in the COMUNICA OPEN class
The team led by Bernal Xian Figueiras aboard the Escuela del Náutico, of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, triumphed in the Comunica Open class, taking the first of the three trophies that were distributed at the gala held at the Monte Real Club de Yates. The second and third prizes went to Riveira and Coruña, with the victories of Daniel Ayaso’s Moucho and Manuel Blanco’s Salseiro.
The STORAX CLASSICS class for the Blue Moon
Luis Molina’s Blue Moon took the grand prize of the Storax Clásicos class to the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña, an award that the skipper received from the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club José Luis Álvarez. The rest of the podium boxes were occupied by two AGABACE boats, José Manuel Cores’ Belisa and Fabián Garrido’s Miña Miniña, who came second and third respectively.
Manuel Marías leads Marías to victory in the SOLVENTIS J80 class
The Portuguese Manuel María Cunha led the crew of the Marías – Casas do Telhado to victory in the Solventis J80 class, taking the victory from Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, who started as the favorite after having won in 2016 and 2017. Both were, without a doubt, the most outstanding boats in the 8 meter one-design competition, and the difference in points in the final classification between one and the other was barely one point. The third position in the class went to another boat from the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Cansino owned by the club’s commodore Fernando Yáñez.
The Portuguese from BB Douro repeat victory in the HELLO! LADIES CUP
On board HOLA.COM, the Portuguese from BB Douro We Do Sailing, led by Portuguese 420 vice-champion Marta Ramada, repeated their victory for the second year in a row at ¡HOLA! Ladies Cup. They started as clear contenders for the throne and they did not disappoint, making it clear that they are champions. On board the sailboat were the runner-up in the world of Snipe, Mafalda Pires de Lima, and the Portuguese champions of Laser and 420, Carolina Joao and Joana Azevedo. The HOLA FASHION crew from Santander, led by Magdalena Czernik, came second and the third position went to HOLA! USA from Lourdes Bilbao, with a crew of students from the Sailing School of the Real Club Marítimo del Abra – Real Sporting Club.
Count of Barcelona Award for the best Portuguese ship
Another of the awards given each year by the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy is the Juan de Borbón Count of Barcelona Award for the best ship with a Portuguese crew, which this year went to Porto de Aveiro, led by Delmar Conde, from the Boca da Nautical Club. Bar. The Portuguese fleet had an outstanding presence this year in the Monte Real Club de Yates competition, with 11 boats flying the Portuguese flag on the entry list.
Honorable mention to the inclusive ship AXA SEGUROS
In addition to the classic and one-design ORCs, common in all regattas, the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy saw the participation, for the fourth consecutive year, of an inclusive boat, AXA Seguros, which, with the support of the insurance company and the Ministry of Social Policy of the Xunta de Galicia allowed the navigation of a group of students from the Juan María de Nigrán Center for people with disabilities. Despite not winning in the category in which they competed, at the awards ceremony they received an honorable mention from the General Secretary for Sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Marta Míguez; and the AXA delegate, María del Mar Romero.
Ready for the Solidarity Vertiathlon
After holding its great annual event, the Monte Real Club de Yates still has two more competitions ahead of its 2018 sports calendar: the Baiona Solidarity Vertiathlon and the J80 Autumn League. The fourth edition of the triathlon with which the club raises funds for its Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities will be held in just a few days, on September 15. The one-design league will last for several weekends in the months of October and November.

The Monte Real Club de Yates delivered the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards tonight in Baiona at a gala held as part of the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy, which the Baiona club has been organizing since Friday with the help of the Military Naval School. Hosted by the Galician Television presenter, Carlos Macía, and the club’s head of communication, Rosana Calvo, the gala was attended by some of the most outstanding athletes on the Spanish nautical scene.
The person in charge of welcoming the attendees was the president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez, who took advantage of the occasion to congratulate the Military Naval School, co-organizer of the Prince of Asturias Trophy, for its 75 years of history in Galicia. Álvarez also recalled two anniversaries related to the world of sailing: the 525th anniversary of the arrival of the caravel Pinta in Baiona, which will be celebrated in 2018, and the fifth centenary of the first circumnavigation of the world by Magellan and ElCano, which will be will commemorate in 2019.
The president of Bodegas Terras Gauda, sponsor of the event, succeeded at the microphone. In his speech, José María Fonseca Moretón recalled his beginnings in the world of sailing with his father and the close relationship that unites him with the Monte Real Yacht Club, of which he has been a member for more than 50 years.
After the welcome speeches, the winners followed one another on stage to collect their award and give a few words of thanks. The first to do so was the Valencian Luis Senís, who received from the commanding officer of the Naval Military School, Ignacio Cuartero, the award for the best skipper of the year for the results obtained at the head of the “Clínicas Dr. Senís” (previously Porrón IX ), with which he became the Swan 45 world champion and won the Nations Trophy for the second consecutive year.
The president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez, was in charge of giving José María Meseguer from Murcia the award for the best boat of the year, which in 2018 went to the “Pez de Abril”, winner of the two nautical competitions most prestigious in Spain, the Copa de la Reina and the Copa del Rey.
Although they were unable to attend the gala because they were competing in Japan, the 470 class world runners-up, Silvia Mas and Patricia Cantero, also had their minute of tribute at the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards gala. Silvia’s father, David Mas, thanked the award given to him by the territorial director of ABANCA, Walter Álvarez.
The Mariano Aguado Communication Award went this year to the EFE Agency, for its dissemination of current sailing events in Spain, publicizing the activity of Spanish clubs, teams and athletes. The agency’s sports manager, Luis Villarejo, collected the award from Pilar de Sas.
The next award to be given was the best one-design of the year, which was won by the Canarian crew of the “Princesa Yaiza”, which this year made history by achieving its fifth world championship in the J80 class. Rayco Tabares from Lanzarote and part of his team gathered on stage to collect the award given to them by the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez.
Undoubtedly one of the moments that generated the most applause among the audience was the announcement of the prize for the best regatta team, which this year was awarded to MAPFRE for its brilliant performance in the Volvo Ocean Race, in which they achieved a meritorious second position. The trimmer and the bow of the team, the Galician Támara Echegoyen, received the award from the president of Terras Gauda wineries, José María Fonseca Moretón.
After finishing the gala, a great fraternization dinner began in the village of the Prince of Asturias Trophy in which there was no lack of fireworks. The point and end of the day was put by a great party that lasted until well into the morning.

· The tall ships debuted this Saturday in competition with three very close races that leave the places of honor very tight and a very open stage with no clear favorite so far
· In the ORC 1, the competition is led by the Aceites Abril of the Pérez Canal brothers of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, while the Inosa and the Bunda of the Real Club Náutico de Coruña and Marina Sada lead the ORC 2 and ORC 3 classes.
· Manuel María Cunha’s Marías-Casas do Telhado and Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen have all the prominence of the J80 class while the defending champions in the ¡HOLA! Ladies Cup were placed in first position today
· The 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Naval Military School closes the curtain tomorrow, Sunday, with the celebration of the last tests of the competition and the delivery of prizes to the winners
The thirty-third edition of the Prince of Asturias Trophy is now in its final stretch after the celebration, this Saturday, of the second of the three days in competition. It does so with very tight standings and the winners’ podiums still undefined, waiting for what happens in the final stage tomorrow, Sunday.
The large sailboats, of the Martin Miller ORC 0-1, Aceites Abril ORC 2 and Gadis ORC 3 classes, which were left without competition yesterday by the weak wind, were able to compete today in three races in front of the Cíes Islands. The boats that started as favorites were marking their ground with difficulties, since the tests were very close and the arrivals very tight.
Today the boats of the Storax Clásicos, Comunica Open and Volvo Autesa ORC 4 classes also premiered, although the wind played tricks on them and the calm they suffered shortly after taking the start, made many decide to abandon or not complete the test in the time limit.
Among them haggled the AXA Seguros boat, a 100% inclusive sailboat with a crew made up of students from the Juan María de Nigrán Center with different intellectual disabilities, accompanied by several specialized trainers. On board a Beneteau Oceanis 31 loaned by the Monte Real Yacht Club, AXA Seguros, which also has the collaboration of the Department of Social Policy of the Xunta de Galicia, sailed in the Open class.
In the J80 one-design competition and the HELLO! Ladies Cup, very complicated by the wind, there were upsets in the classification and, in both cases, the leading sailboats exchanged places with the second classified.
Thus, the design of the provisional podiums is still too open to point out clear favorites to take the trophy, and everything will depend on what happens in the last races in dispute, which will be held tomorrow, Sunday, starting at noon.
Great premiere of the MARTIN MILLER ORC 0-1 class
The April Oils of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal opened this Saturday the locker of the Martin Miller ORC 0-1 class with a second, a fourth and a first place in the three races that allowed it to be at the top of the classification. Just one point apart is followed by his partner from the Vigo yacht club and one of his most direct rivals in the competition, José Luis Freire’s Pairo 8, skippered by the young Luis Bugallo. The provisional third position is for the Portuguese Delmar Conde.
Inosa commands the class OILS APRIL ORC 2
Marina Sada’s Inosa, led by Fran Edreira, was the sailboat that obtained the best results in the Aceites Abril ORC 2 class, and takes the provisional gold in the pocket, but the classification is so tight that everything is still very open. Ramón Ojea’s Bosch Service Solutions (Club Marítimo de Canido) remains on the lookout from second place, just one point behind the leader; and with one point less, Grupo Santorum & Martínez, owned by Javier Durán, from the Club Náutico de Riveira, is third.
The Bunda was placed first in the GADIS ORC 3 class
The Bunda crew from A Coruña, with Jacobo Solorzano at the controls, was the clear winner of the day in the Gadis ORC 3 class. Three victories in the three contested races and three points that bring him closer to the final victory. With 6 points, Plan B by Nuno Rivas is second and somewhat lower, with 11, is Unus by Luis García Trigo, from the Monte Real Club de Yates.
Travesío and Balea dous lead the VOLVO AUTESA ORC 4 class
The Travesío La Riviere Conservas and the Balea Dous are the clearest contenders for the podium in the Volvo Autesa ORC 4 class, as they were the only boats that this Saturday were able to score points on the second day of the Príncipe competition. The boats from Vilagarcía and Rodeira, skippered by Pablo de la Riva and Luis Pérez, are first and second respectively and among them will be, almost in all probability, the winner of the Prince of this 2018.
The Nautical School will lead the COMUNICA OPEN class
The Comunica Open class closes its first day of competition with two boats in the lead and the rest of the fleet points, after abandoning the competition due to lack of wind or not being able to complete it within the time limit established by the committee. The Escuela del Náutico, of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, skippered by Bernal Xian Figueiras, was the first to complete the 13 and a half mile course. Ten minutes later, Daniel Ayaso, who is second in the standings, crossed the Moucho.
Everything to decide in the STORAX CLASSICS class
The wind was the worst of the rivals for the Storax Clásico class sailboats, since it did not blow with enough intensity to allow them to finish what was their first test in this Prince of Asturias Trophy. Everything is still pending, therefore, in a class that will take to the water tomorrow, Sunday, just as it started, without a clear favorite and without a defined provisional podium.
The Marías climbs positions in the SOLVENTIS J80 class
Manuel María Cunha’s Marías-Casas do Telhado and Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, both from Monte Real Club de Yates, are being the undisputed protagonists of the one-design competition in the Solventis J80 class. In today’s session, very complicated by a very shifty wind, which also appeared and disappeared at times, the first places in the two contested races alternated. They were placed at the top of the classification separated by just one point from each other, and 4 and 5 points away from their most direct rival, Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino, also from Monte Real, who is third.
I roll over in the HELLO! LADIES CUP
In the HELLO! Ladies Cup, the Portuguese from BB Douro We Do Sailing, aboard HOLA.COM, stormed the lead by snatching the first position from HOLA FASHION from Santander. The defenders of the title, with Marta Ramada in the lead, gave no respite to their rivals and crossed the finish line in first position in the two contested races. The team from the Real Club Náutico de Santander fell to second place on the provisional podium and the girls from the Real Club Marítimo de Abra – Real Sporting Club, skippered by Lourdes Bilbao, are third.
Tomorrow Sunday the curtain falls
The 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy closes the curtain tomorrow, Sunday, with the celebration of the last tests of the competition and the awards ceremony for the winners. If the weather reports are met, the wind will once again make an appearance in the Rías Baixas, although somewhat later than expected, which could delay the start time of the tests, scheduled for twelve noon. Be that as it may , tomorrow, Sunday, the name of the new winners of the Prince of Asturias Trophy, the great sailing event in Galicia, will be announced. In addition to awarding trophies to the top three winners in each category, the Conde de Barcelona Trophy will be awarded to the best Portuguese boat, the Mary Woodward special award to the best Solventis J80 class boat, and the ¡HOLA! Ladies Cup. The awards ceremony will be held at six in the afternoon at the Monte Real Club de Yates.

The thirty-third edition of the Prince of Asturias Trophy organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Naval Military School raised the curtain this Friday in the Rías Baixas marked by the vagaries of the wind. Eolo wanted to be the protagonist of the opening day and left the large sailboats blank, which could not compete in any test.
The regatta committee had designed for them a coastal one starting from the interior of the Bay of Baiona, routed to Subrido and back, but the wind, very shifty and with hardly any intensity, played a trick on them and did not give them the opportunity to put your plans in motion. They moved towards the outside in search of more favorable conditions but instability continued to be the trend and finally it was decided to suspend the regatta.
Luckier were the J80s of the Solventis class and the Figaros of the HELLO! Ladies Cup that, in a regatta field located inside the bay of Baiona, two tests could be played with an average wind of about 7 knots. A third was attempted, but could not be completed.
On this first day of the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy, some of the favorites were taking up positions and occupying the highest positions on a provisional podium that still has two more days to go.
The OKOFEN tops the SOLVENTIS J80 class
In the Solventis J80 class, one of the favorites to win the title of the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, opened this first stage making his intentions very clear. With Diego Fernández, Hugo Ferreiro and Javier de la Gándara Jr. on board, the legendary skipper finished first and third today, which allowed him to take the lead in the standings. “The day was very complicated, with little wind and the fleet very tight, but there is still a lot of competition ahead and we hope that tomorrow and after the thermal wind will allow us to sail better,” said Diego Fernández upon returning to land. Another boat from the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Marías – Casas do Telhado de Manuel María, was weighed down by fifth position in the first race, and crossing the finish line with a course and signing first in the last, had to settle for second Market Stall. The third place on the provisional podium is occupied by Moura de Miguel Fernández, from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña.
The HELLO! Fashion commands the HELLO! LADIES CUP
In the HELLO! Ladies Cup, the victory of the day went to ¡HOLA! Fashion, led by the Polish patron based in Santander, Magdalena Czernik. With a first place and a second in the two events held inside the bay of Baiona, the girls from the Real Club Marítimo de Santander were placed at the head of the women’s competition of the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy. The Portuguese HOLA.COM team, led by Marta Ramada and defending the title won in 2017, started somewhat weakly in the first test, finishing fourth, but in the second barlo-sota of the day they managed to cross the line first. arrivals and placed in the second drawer of the provisional podium. The third place in the classification is occupied by the crew of the Real Club Marítimo del Abra – Real Sporting Club, skippered by Lourdes Bilbao aboard the HOLA! USES.

· The social program of the trophy will include the presentation of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards at a gala to be held on Saturday night
This Friday, a new edition of the Prince of Asturias Trophy, the quintessential sailing event in Galicia and one of the most important competitions on the Spanish nautical scene, is settling in Baiona, which in 2018 celebrates its 33rd anniversary uninterruptedly.
Pulling the strings of the organization, once again, are the historic Monte Real Yacht Club and the Escuela Naval Militar, which celebrates its 75 years of presence in Marin by participating in the trophy with several sailboats manned by aspiring midshipmen.
In the competition program, designed by a regatta committee chaired by Fernando Giraldo, the traditional scheme of three regatta days is maintained, with different tests for the participating boats, which will be divided into ORCs, Open, Classics, J80s and Fígaros.
On the opening day on Friday, the classes Martin Miller ORC 0-1, April ORC 2 Oils, Gadis ORC 3, Solventis J80 and HELLO! Ladies Cup. The first starting honk, which will start a coastal tour for the ORCs, will be heard at three in the afternoon; and half an hour later the tests for the monotypes will begin, which can be seen inside the Bay of Baiona disputing windward-leeward layouts.
On Saturday, the rest of the participants, grouped in the Storax Clásicos and Comunica Open classes, will join the competition. The organization has prepared several coastal routes for them, among which one will be chosen depending on the weather conditions. If the wind allows it, they will start at 12:30, just half an hour after the rest of the boats, which will have to face several batons to continue climbing positions in the classification.
The scheme for Sunday, the last day of competition, will be identical to that of Saturday, with the same test design for the different classes and the same start times. It will undoubtedly be the key day of the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy, in which the winners’ podium will be finished and the prizes will be awarded to the best crews.
At the official presentation of the trophy, held this afternoon at the Monte Real Club de Yates, all attendees agreed on the importance of the event as one of the unavoidable sailing events in Galicia, which makes Baiona the nerve center of the world nautical, with the best crews competing in the incomparable setting of the Rías Baixas.
The president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez; the commanding director of the Naval Military School, Ignacio Cuartero; the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal; the General Secretary for Sport of the Xunta de Galicia, Marta Míguez; and the deputy of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Consuelo Besada. The vice-president of Bodegas Terras Gauda, Antón Fonseca, also took part; and the territorial director of ABANCA, Walter Álvarez, representing the sponsors of the event.
In addition to Terras Gauda and ABANCA, in this 2018 they collaborate with the Prince of Asturias Trophy ¡HOLA!, Ramada Storax, AXA Seguros, Comunica, Volvo Autesa, Martin Miller, Coca Cola, Aceites Abril, Solventis, Vanguard, Gadis, Paradores, San Simon, Tactic Media, Tuypan, Pereira, Helly Hansen and Nea.
Guaranteed excitement with the best crews on the water
Pending the deadline for registration, which will remain open for a few more days, fifty crews have already confirmed their presence at the 33rd Prince of Asturias Trophy, guaranteeing excitement in the water, and it is estimated that there will be more than half thousands of sailors participating.
After having won the 2017 Rolex Giraglia and participated in this year’s Copa del Rey, the “Giulietta” arrives in Baiona from Cascais, a great ship that, despite not being a great connoisseur of the Rías Baixas, is willing to complicate it. things to the Galician crews. Two other teams to take into account will also sail with a Portuguese accent, José Carlos Prista’s “Xekmatt” and Delmar Conde’s “Porto de Aveiro”. The “MBA Atlántico”, the “Porto Caro 2”, the “Farofino” are three other sailboats that will make up the Portuguese fleet of the Prince of Asturias.
The recent winners of the Rías will not make it easy for the Portuguese neighbors, who will also try to win the Baiona prizes to boast of a double in the two great Galician competitions. They are the “Pairo VIII” of José Luis Freire with Luis Bugallo at the controls, the “Bosch Service Solutions” of Ramón Ojea, “La Burla Negra” of Juan José Martínez, the “Balea Dous” of Luis Pérez and the “Lacazán” by Sonia Cortazar.
Except for unexpected surprises, we will also see the “Aceites Abril” of the Pérez Canal brothers, the “Solventis” armed by the Moro brothers and the “Starfighter” of Julio Rodríguez in prominent positions in the classification, along with the “Mirfak” or the “ Arroutado”, other crews that promise to fight on the water to win the final victory.
A 6×6 with a female accent
Six identical boats with six sailors on board will once again star in the HELLO! Ladies Cup, an exclusively female competition in which some of the best athletes on the peninsular nautical scene meet every year. This year the crews arrive from Galicia, Madrid, the Basque Country and Portugal.
A 100% inclusive ship
With the aim of continuing the inclusion work that it carries out throughout the year through its Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities, the Monte Real Yacht Club will once again take to the water in the Príncipe de Asturias Trophy, for the fourth consecutive year, a 100% inclusive ship, the AXA Seguros.
Aboard a Beneteau Oceanis 31, a crew made up of people with different intellectual disabilities from the Juan María de Nigrán Center will compete in the coastal races scheduled for the Open class over the weekend. They will be accompanied by a couple of monitors from their association and two specialized trainers from Monte Real.
An extensive social program in the village of Monte Real

Breakfast will be served before going out to sea and there will be beer and gin and tonic tastings and seafood dinners at the end of the different days. A screen will also be installed to relive the best moments of each day and see the performance of the different crews on the water.
On the opening day on Friday, Onda Cero Vigo will broadcast its morning programming, especially dedicated to the trophy, from Monte Real itself. And on Saturday night the event’s big party will be held, which will begin at eight in the afternoon with the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards ceremony, will continue with a fellowship dinner and fireworks, and will last until well into the morning.

OFFICIAL PRESENTATION STATEMENTS
José Luis Álvarez, president of the Monte Real Yacht Club:
“This 2018 marks the 75th anniversary of the arrival in Galicia of the Military Naval School, our great partner in this Prince of Asturias Trophy. We also commemorate the fact that 525 years ago the caravel Pinta arrived in Baiona with the news of the discovery of America. And we are already celebrating the fifth anniversary of the first trip around the world, of Magellan and Elcano. And so, with the memory of these three great anniversaries, it is how I present the Prince of Asturias Trophy. As a competition with a great tradition that we celebrate hand in hand with the Naval Military School, in a town closely related to the sea such as Baiona and with the same enthusiasm of those who one day ventured to travel the world aboard a sailboat. ”
Ignacio Cuartero, commander director of the Naval Military School:
“Seafaring training is an essential part of learning for all Navy officers and participation in regattas is the key point of this training. The Rías Baixas are also an exceptional classroom to learn navigation in all its aspects, and the Prince of Asturias Trophy has the good fortune to bring both things together. We will attend this thirty-third edition with all the school sailboats that the Naval School has and we will participate with a female crew in the HELLO! Ladies Cup”
Antón Fonseca, Vice President of Bodegas Terras Gauda:
“For Terras Gauda it is an honor to be here for another year, in a place where we feel at home due to the human quality of the people who organize both the Prince of Asturias Trophy and the National Sailing Awards. The Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities is the perfect example of all the good that Monte Real does and I only hope that the relationship that unites Terras Gauda with the club lasts for many more years”
Walter Álvarez, territorial director of ABANCA:
“For ABANCA it is a great pride to be present at a sailing event that brings together the Galician, national and international elite. Our participation in this trophy is a true reflection of the entity’s commitment to the world of sport and the sea, betting on values such as the desire for personal improvement, perseverance or teamwork. The Prince of Asturias Trophy is the great sailing festival in Galicia and it will undoubtedly be a success”

· The first news agency in the world in Spanish will receive the Mariano Aguado Communication Award from the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards for its dissemination of current events in the world of sailing in Spain
· The jury that awards the awards wanted to recognize with this award the work carried out by EFE to publicize the activity of Spanish clubs, teams and athletes in national and international competitions
· The sports manager of the Luis Villarejo agency will be in charge of collecting the award on September 1 in the fishing village of Baiona at a gala organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club
The EFE Agency has been honored this year with the Mariano Aguado Communication Award from the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards for its dissemination of current sailing events in Spain, bringing this sport closer to millions of readers around the world.
The jury that awards the awards wanted to recognize the work carried out by EFE to publicize the activity of Spanish clubs, teams and athletes in both national and international competitions, thus facilitating knowledge of their achievements and promoting their informative journey.
About to complete 80 years of experience, EFE is currently the first news agency in Spanish and the fourth in the world, with a network of 3,000 journalists of 60 different nationalities that allows it to spread some 3 million news items a year to more of 2,000 media outlets.
The sports director of the agency, Luis Villarejo, will be in charge of collecting, next Saturday, September 1 in the fishing village of Baiona, one of the six awards that will be presented at the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards gala, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club, coinciding with the Prince of Asturias Trophy.
After having been editor-in-chief of the newspaper Marca, director of communication for the Real Madrid player squad and head of communication for the Higher Sports Council, Villarejo has been, since 2016, the most visible head of sports for the EFE agency. The man from Madrid, who also holds the bronze medal for sporting merit, has been one of the architects of Spanish sailing having, within the agency, a space reserved for its dissemination throughout the world.
In addition to EFE, this year the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards will be received by the J80 “Princesa Yaiza” (monotype of the year), the 470 crew formed by Silvia Mas and Patricia Cantero (Olympic team of the year), the Swan 42 “Pez de April” (boat of the year) and Luis Senís (skipper of the year). The last prize that remains to be revealed, which will recognize the regatta team of the year, will be announced next Friday.
· The Murcian ship and the Valencian shipowner will be awarded this year with two of the prestigious Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards that will be delivered on September 1 at the Monte Real Club de Yates (Baiona)
· The Swan 42 “Pez de Abril” of the Club Náutico Portman skippered by José María Meseguer from Murcia was proclaimed the winner of the 37th Copa del Rey MAPFRE and the 20th Copa de La Reina in 2018
· The Valencian owner Luis Senís, current Swan 45 world champion, will receive the award for having assembled and led a crew that has chained national and international titles throughout the last year
The Murcian boat “Pez de Abril” of the Portman Nautical Club, skippered by José María Meseguer, and the Valencian owner of the Swan 45 “Clínicas Dr. Senís” (Porrón IX), Luis Senís, will receive the Awards on September 1 in Baiona National Sailing Terras Gauda to the best boat and owner of the year.
In a gala that will be held, as has become a tradition, within the framework of the Prince of Asturias Trophy of the Monte Real Yacht Club, the crew of the Swan 42 “Pez de Abril” will collect the award that distinguishes it as the best of the year after having achieved victory, in this 2018, in two of the most prestigious nautical competitions in Spain, the Copa de la Reina and the Copa del Rey. The team, which in 2017 won silver in the sailing world championship, also achieved a meritorious second place in Palmavela.
At the head of the “Pez de Abril” of the Portman Yacht Club is José María Meseguer, a businessman from Murcia who started sailing when he was 40 years old, after taking an introductory course in light sailing. After making the leap to the cruise ship and changing ships, his desire and drive have made a crew rise to the top to which he has applied, according to what he says, company management criteria: creating an excellent human team, giving them resources and letting them work coordinated under good leadership.
Meseguer will share the stage in Baiona with another of the great names of sailing in Spain in this 2018, the Valencian Luis Senís, who will receive the award at Monte Real that distinguishes him as the best shipowner of the year for the great work carried out at the head of the “ Dr. Senís Clinics” (Porrón IX).
In its resolution, the jury of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards wanted to highlight the upward evolution of a project that was born years ago as an amateur but has grown non-stop until it reaches the highest level. They are currently Swan 45 world champions and their intention is to retain the title in 2018 at the Rolex Swan Cup to be held in Porto Cervo in mid-September.
In the long sports resume of the new Luis Senís National Sailing Award there are also 4 SM La Reina trophies, 4 victories in Palmavela, 3 runners-up in the Copa del Rey de Vela and 5 Spanish ORC championships.
His last victories were achieved just a few weeks ago in Mallorca. After winning the Copa del Rey in its category, the “Clínicas Dr. Senís” was simultaneously proclaimed the winner, for the second consecutive year, of one of the most important titles in cruising sailing, the Nations Trophy Mediterranean League 2018.
