De la Gándara caresses the final victory

The sailor from Vigo Javier de la Gándara and his crew from Okofen caress the final victory of the Baitra J80 Winter League, as they reach the last day of the competition, which is held this Saturday in Baiona, as leaders.

De la Gándara, his sons Jaime and Javier, and Okofen regular Diego Fernández lead the provisional standings with 8 points and, except for big mistakes or unexpected surprises that prevent them from maintaining the good track record up to now, they have many ballots to take the final victory.

Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Albotoro, who was joined on several days by the Spanish J80 champion, Javier Aguado, could avoid his victory. It is another of the J80s that has managed to chain very good results in the six tests held so far and could storm the first position of the league, since it occupies second place just 4 points behind Okofen.

Somewhat more difficult to finish as leader will be for the Portuguese crew of the Marías, led by Manel María, who is third with 17 points, 9 behind the leader and 5 behind the second. It will be difficult for him to win the laurels but he will almost certainly be among the top finishers.

Closing the Top 5 of the Baitra J80 Winter League and with aspirations to be able to sneak into a podium position are Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino, with 22 points; and La Galera by Miguel Fernández, with 24 points.

After the suspension of the penultimate day due to bad weather conditions, the Baitra J80 Winter League will celebrate its final stage this Saturday from three in the afternoon. The regatta committee hopes to be able to start the three tests planned in the program, and the sailboats will be left without being able to apply a new discard (of their worst result) because the six tests necessary to do so will not be held.

Once the competition in the water is over, the facilities of the Monte Real Club de Yates will host the awards ceremony for the winners, starting at half past seven. It will be attended by the general director of Baitra Accesorios Navales, Juan Carlos González, as sponsor of the event.

Monte Real joins the tribute to migrants who died at sea

 

· The club will collaborate in the “Journey of the Cross of Lampedusa”, a symbol of the migrant drama, which will make a stop in Baiona on its pilgrimage from Vigo to Tui

The Monte Real Club de Yates will join this Friday in the tribute to the migrants who died at sea by collaborating with the pilgrimage of the Cross of Lampedusa, a symbol of the immigration drama. After almost 7 years of traveling around the world, the cross will arrive in Baiona from Vigo to later continue its pilgrimage to Tui.

The Cross of Lampedusa is a piece made by the carpenter Francesco Tuccio with wood from shipwrecked canoes off the Italian coast, in which thousands of immigrants have died in their attempt to find a better life.

More than eight feet tall, five feet wide and weighing about 130 pounds, the cross was blessed by Pope Francis in 2014, not long after a migrant boat capsized off the island of Lampedusa. , leaving 366 dead.

It was the pontiff himself who asked to make it a symbol of the tragedy of migrants and transmitter of a message of peace and solidarity throughout the world, and since then the cross has made a pilgrimage to many places.

The “Journey of the Cross of Lampedusa” , as this pilgrimage was called, arrives this Friday at 1:00 p.m. in Baiona aboard a Maritime Rescue vessel.

Suspended the penultimate day

With an average of 25-26 knots and gusts of 30-32, the regatta committee decided to suspend the fourth and penultimate day of the Baitra J80 Winter League, which was to be held today in Baiona. The competition, in which Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen is leading, followed by Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto and Manel María’s Marías, will see its final outcome on May 29.

The Baitra J80 Winter League that the Monte Real Club de Yates has organized in Baiona since last January enters its final stretch this Saturday with the dispute of the penultimate day of tests.

Starting at three in the afternoon, the 18 sailboats that aspire to the title of the one-design league will meet in the bay of Baiona to compete in three new regattas with which to continue defining positions for the end of the competition, scheduled for May 29.

This Saturday there will be three new tests between buoys, of the windward-leeward type with a double loop, in which Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen has proven to be the best so far. With partials of 4-3-1-1-2-1, the crew of the sailor from Vigo has been at the top of the classification for several days but without being able to relax too much, since there are several candidates to steal the lead.

From second place, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Rampage is another of the firm contenders for the title. In the last stage, being able to rule out his worst result (12 points), which had been penalizing him a lot in the table, allowed him to rise to the silver position, just 4 points behind the leader.

A little further down, in third position, with provisional bronze, is the Portuguese crew of the Marías, led by Manel Marías. They are separated by 9 points from Okofen, but the team is one of those that usually surprises, so a possible Portuguese victory cannot be ruled out yet.

Somewhat more unstable with the previous scores was Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino who, with very different partials, is in fourth position, closely followed, just 2 points apart, by La Galera from A Coruña, with Miguel Fernández Vasco in front.

2. RULES

3. ADVERTISING [NP] [DP]

3.1 Participants may display advertising in accordance with the provisions of World Sailing Regulation 20, the RFEV Competition Regulations and the RFEV prescriptions for said regulations.

3.2 In accordance with World Sailing regulation 20, participants may be required to display advertising on the forward 20% of the hull on each side of the boat and on the sides of the boom, as well as possible advertising pennants on the backstay of each boat. All this would be provided at the regatta office once your registration is confirmed.

3.3 Modifications to the stickers provided by the Organizing Committee are not allowed.

3.4 The Monte Real Club de Yates reserves the right to demand the elimination or substitution of any type of publicity, message or image displayed during the event of the boats or equipment of their crew members, which does not comply with the regulations. generally accepted moral and ethical standards (World Sailing Regulation 20) or contravene the interests of the organizing club. This includes holding races on the regatta course, at the club’s facilities or while at the regatta committee’s disposal.

3.5 The owner or skipper of the boat with advertising will be asked to indicate or show the type of advertising that will be displayed during the celebration of the regatta, for the approval of the organizing committee.

3.6 The participating owners and crews grant their authorization to the MRCYB so that any photograph, image or video of people or boats taken during the days of the regatta may be published in any medium, such as television advertisements, editorial comments, information, advertising etc.

4. ELIGIBILITY

Participants must meet the eligibility requirements reflected in the WS regulations and in the prescriptions of the RFEV to said regulations.

5. PARTICIPATION

5.1 Any single-hull sailing cruiser with a minimum length of 6.49 m may participate. and with an ORC International or ORC Club measurement certificate valid for the year 2021. Vessels with a GPH greater than 780 sec./mile will not be admitted.

5.2 The skippers of the boats must be of legal age accredited by means of a photocopy of their DNI and, in the event of carrying a minor as a crew member, they must provide, together with the documentation for registration, the corresponding written authorization from their parents or guardians. , as the responsibility of the minor during the regatta falls to the skipper of the boat where he is embarked.

5.3 There will only be a TWO division (necessarily with two crew members).

5.4 In view of the registrations made and as soon as their effective participation in the regatta is verified, the Regatta Committee and Organizing Committee, if they deem it appropriate, will establish within the TWO division, the classes and cuts of the same that consider necessary seeking the greatest fairness possible, not admitting claims in this regard.

5.5 The J80 boats will participate in the Galician A2 championship category of this monotype.

5.6 The minimum number of boats to form a Galician division and champion plate of each class and category will be:

– Absolute 5 boats
– Female 4 boats (in the same category)
– Mixed 4 boats (in the same category)

6. REGISTRATION

6.1 Registration will be mandatory and will be done through the official platform of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation, ESCORA, before 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 2, 2021.

– Valid ORC measurement certificate for 2021.
– Necessary qualification of the skipper to be able to govern the boat.

7. CONFIRMATION OF REGISTRATIONS

The definitive admission of a registration is subject to the complete presentation of the required documents, BEFORE 8:00 p.m. on FRIDAY, JUNE 4, 2021, as well as the safety review form completed and signed by the Measurement and/or Regatta Committee and the personal signature of the person in charge of the boat, the written waiver of responsibility and authorization to the club and Organizing Committee to disseminate all of the images collected from the event in any media without territorial limit.

8. COURSE

8.1 In accordance with the RFGV Galician Two-Handed Championship Regulations, the planned distance and itinerary will be adapted to the prevailing weather conditions, for the safety of the participants.

8.2 Initially the planned route will be: Departure in the Bay of Baiona – Beacon to unmark if necessary – Beacon of Carallones Er. – Beacon of La Negra Er. – Illas Cíes Br. – Lighthouse Tower Camouco Er. turning it – Beacon Islote dos Viños in Cíes, Br. – Beacon of La Negra Br. – Beacon of Carallones Br. – Arrival. 10. SAIL INVENTORY, INSPECTION, SAFETY AND MEASUREMENTS [NP] [DP]

The responsibility of going to this regatta with its correctly updated measurement certificate, material measured and sealed correctly, as well as the maximum number of sails that can be carried on board and the required safety elements is exclusively the skipper of the registered boat.

11. SECURITY [NP] [DP]

11.1 For safety purposes, this regatta is considered a reduced category 4, in accordance with the WS Special Rules for High Seas Regatta (OSR) and specified in the security sheet attached to the registration, both of which are mandatory.

11.2 It will be the responsibility of the owner or the person in charge of each boat to comply with the legal regulations established for recreational boats, both in general and especially for their government, dispatch and security.

11.3 Do not forget that it is very important:
 VHF radio with channels 16, 71 and 72, support mobile phone, as well as enough batteries and spare parts for the entire duration of navigation.
 Bring on board all the updated regulatory documentation of the boat, including insurance and the necessary qualifications of the skipper.
 Mandatory GPS, at least one (1) per boat.
 Perfect condition of navigation lights and radar reflector.
 The use of the autopilot in regatta will be allowed. You must carry enough fuel to be able to navigate at maximum power for four (4) hours, as well as one (1) safety harness per crew member or registered skipper, approved vests, clothing and water shoes.
 Permanently installed lifelines.
 Throughout the duration of the regatta, mandatory passage controls and position notices will be established throughout the entire route.
11.4 Wake Tracking and Security Program. [NP] [SP]

It is very important that they provide mobile battery chargers or mobile connection to the ship’s battery to charge. Participants who disconnect or do not directly connect to the program at all times, without just cause, may be penalized with a minimum of 2% of their real time, with no claims being accepted in this regard.

12. PRIZES

12.1 The absolute winner of ORC A2, J80 A2, female A2 or mixed A 2 that meets the requirements of the Galician Championship Regulations (all its crew members have a Galician federation license for the current year and the boat runs for a Galician club ) will receive the Galician Champion plaque for the year 2021.

12.2 The complete list of prizes will be exposed in the TOA before the start of the Regatta.

13. BERTHS

The boats formally registered in this regatta that do not belong to the MRCYB fleet will have a free mooring or anchoring place (mooring under the exclusive responsibility of the owner or skipper) reserved at the MRCYB from Sunday, May 30 to Sunday, June 6.

13. LIABILITY

13.1 All boats participating in the regatta do so at their own risk and responsibility.

13.2 The Monte Real Club de Yates, the Organizing Authority or any other person or body involved in the organization of the event, rejects any responsibility for loss, damage, injury or inconvenience that may occur to people or things, both on land and at sea, as a result of participating in the tests covered by this Notice of Race.

13.3 Attention is drawn to Fundamental Rule 4 RACE DECISION, part 1 of the RRS which states:

“It is the exclusive responsibility of a boat to decide whether to participate in a test or to continue racing”

ANNEX I

SECURITY PROTOCOL IN RELATION TO COVID-19 FOR THE REGATTA [NP] [DP]

 

A : MEASURES COMMON TO THE WHOLE ACTIVITY:

A1) The interpersonal separation of 2 m and/or the use of physical protection measures are established as fundamental measures, as established by the regulations, in addition to constant hand washing.
A2) Before attending the activity, participants must undergo a SELF-TEST to confirm symptoms. Do I have a fever, cough or shortness of breath?
A3) All participants must bring their own mask and hydroalcoholic gel with them for all activities.
A4) All participants who have any symptoms of COVID19 or have been in contact with someone infected, will not be able to access the facilities or carry out activities. In addition, they must immediately notify the technical manager of the facility or competition.
A5) It will be mandatory to wash hands at all entrances to the facilities with hydroalcoholic gel or soap, for at least 40 seconds and constantly, before and after each activity that is carried out.
A6) It will not be allowed to share food or drinks between participants, users and/or staff.
A7) All coaches and assistance personnel in water must carry an FFP2 mask and their own bottle of hydroalcoholic gel.
A8) The use of changing rooms is not recommended and they will be used only when necessary. Personal items will not be allowed in the changing rooms.
A9) The use of a mask will be mandatory at all times.
A10) In navigation situations in which the mask cannot be used, in the event of: harsh sea, wind and/or rain conditions, the wetsuit will be used to cover the nose and mouth.

In addition, before sailing, special attention should be paid to the rest of the measures to minimize the risk of contagion:

– Take temperature prior to activity.
– Frequent hand washing.
– Do not exchange positions on the boats during the same day of Activity.
– Disinfection of shared material.

B : OWN MEASURES FOR CRUISE SHIPS AND MONOTYPES ADDED TO THE COMMON MEASURES:

B1) Mandatory use of masks and a safety distance of 1.5 m. during the actions of lowering and raising boats.
B2) Keep the crews in their own boat whenever they are on the jetty.
B3) Maintain a constant safety distance of 1.5 m interpersonally when circulating or being on the slipway and pontoon.
B4) Mandatory mask use at all times.
B5) Hand washing with hydroalcoholic gel in all accesses.
B6) Carry hydrogel on board for constant handwashing of the crew.
B7) Daily disinfection of the boat.
B8) Obligation to use their own water bottle for each crew member. Do not share bottle
B9) Obligation for each athlete to carry their own supplies on board. Do not share food.
B10) Carry a minimum of 5 masks on board to be able to replace those that are damaged.

Monte Real will wear a blue flag for another year

 

Once again this year, the Monte Real Yacht Club has renewed the blue flag that distinguishes our port for the environmental care of the infrastructures, the quality of the waters and the excellence of our nautical services.

The Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) has included Monte Real in the list of 11 marinas in Galicia, 5 of them in the province of Pontevedra, which this year obtained the distinction of ‘blue flag marina ‘.

The club thus consolidates a distinction that it maintains with a specific environmental program that includes actions related to water, waste, energy consumption, safety or health, among other actions.

In addition to our marina, in Baiona blue flags will fly this year on 6 beaches: Barbeira, Concheira, Os Frades, Ladeira, Ribeira and Santa Marta.

 

 

 

The Repsol Trophy crowns the new kings of Spring

 

Two regattas held this weekend in the Rías Baixas revealed the names of the new champions of the Monte Real Spring Regatta

The 43rd edition of the Monte Real Club de Yates Spring Regatta came down this Sunday in Baiona with the crowning of its new champions and the awarding of prizes to the crews that were winners of the two regattas held this weekend in the Rias Baixas.

After a first stage in which the sailboats had to circumnavigate the Cíes Islands, the second and last test began this afternoon in Baiona with much more expectation than wind. The regatta committee had to delay the start time of the race because the wind was insufficient, but the situation improved and as the crossing progressed, maximums of 15 knots were reached, which speeded up the navigation of the sailboats.

ORC CLASS 1-2

In the ORC 1-2 class, the Yess Racing of the Portuguese Rui Ramada, with a pendant from the Monte Real Club de Yates, consolidated the victory that had been dragging since the first day, and with two wins in the two contested races, they won the gold of the competition. The second and third position also did not vary with respect to the first day, and the silver and bronze went to two boats from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo: the Aceites Abril led by Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal; and Julio Rodríguez’s Magical.

ORC-CLASS 3

Where there were more jumps on this last day of the Repsol Trophy was in the ORC 3 class, in which Ramón Ojea’s Bosch Service Solutions, from the Club Marítimo de Canido, managed to unseat Vicente Cid’s Deep Blue 2.1 from the first position. Real Club Náutico de Vigo, which was one of the favorites to win, but finally had to settle for second place. La Burla Negra by Juan José Martínez, from the Club Náutico Castrelo de Miño, managed to climb one position and slipped into the third step of the final podium.

ORC-CLASS 4

In the ORC 4 class there were unexpected surprises. One of the favorites to win the title, Luis Pérez’s Balea Dous, from the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira, was disqualified due to a breach of the cruise regulations related to the weight of the crew and was left without the coveted laurels, which finally they went to Nahela de Víctor Álvarez, of the Club Náutico Alagua. The Albarellos by Fernando Rey, from the Monte Real Yacht Club; and the Forza Catro of Victor Fernández, occupied the second and third place in the final classification.

ORC-CLASS A2

In the A2 competition, with crews reduced to the maximum, the Q Talento of Javier Rey and Jorge Justo, from Monte Real Club de Yates, repeated the first place he had achieved on the opening day and took the final victory, becoming thus, a firm contender for the title of Galician champion of A2, which will be played in just a few weeks in Baiona. El Alalunga by Rodrigo Rodríguez and Carlos Cárdenas, from the Canido Maritime Club; and the Cinco Islas Albariño of Iñaki Carbajo and Miguel Fins, of the Club Náutico de Beluso, were second and third.

J80 CLASS

Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen was once again the fastest among the J80 monotypes, which competed in real time. He finished the test first and after making full of victories, he took the champion trophy of the Spring Regatta. In the rest of the steps of the podium there was an exchange of positions. .The Marías de Manel Marías, who came third, rose to second place; and the Maija of José Luis Pérez, who held the provisional silver, finished with the bronze.

FIGARO CLASS

In the Figaro class, in which the four women’s sailboats of the Monte Real Women’s Sailing project and two other mixed boats competed, the triumph, after winning the two regatta days, went to Miguel Montes’ Tutatis. Alejandro Vázquez’s Bouvento and María Teresa Valladares’s Ladeira were in second and third position.

The regatera day this Sunday ended on land with the awards ceremony for the winners of the different categories, some trophies that were in charge of delivering the president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez; the head of Marine and Fisheries of Repsol, Inés González Megido; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; the deputy for Sports of Pontevedra, Gorka Gómez; and the provincial head of sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Daniel Benavides.

THE NEXT APPOINTMENT: THE GALICIAN CHAMPIONSHIP OF TWO

After the celebration of the Repsol Trophy – 43rd Spring Regatta, the Monte Real Club de Yates is already approaching the halfway point of its cruise competitions scheduled for this year 2021, a point that it will reach on June 5 with the celebration of the Galician Championship of A Two, for ORCs and J80s. The Baionese club organizes the appointment by delegation of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation. It will be the tenth consecutive year that Monte Real is in charge of this competition, which this year is also the VII Rafael Olmedo Memorial, in honor of its president for more than 40 years, who died in 2015.

Baiona, Vigo and Rodeira take the first victories of the Repsol Trophy

The Repsol Trophy unfurled sails this Saturday in the Galician Rías Baixas with the celebration of the first of the two days from which the winners of the 43rd edition of the legendary Spring Regatta of the Monte Real Yacht Club of Baiona will emerge.

The competition brought together 47 sailboats grouped into cruise classes, competing under the ORC time compensation formula; and monotypes J80 and Fígaros, the races being disputed in real time.

There were nearly 300 sailors representing nautical clubs from all over Galicia and some from Portugal, who this Saturday disputed a 28-mile route, some and 20 others, surrounding, with more or less turns, the Cíes Islands of the Atlantic Islands National Park from Galicia. Although initially the regatta committee had planned a round trip route between Baiona and the Rande bridge, the wind conditions were not the most suitable for that route and it was decided at the last minute to make the change.

The regatta was held with a wind from the northwest, almost from the north, always above 13 knots, which facilitated the navigation of the sailboats, which were able to complete the test with agility and without problems.

ORC CLASS 1-2

In the ORC 1-2 class, the one with the fastest boats, Julio Rodríguez’s Magical (RCN Vigo) was in the lead from the start, leading the fleet at all times. He crossed the finish line first, after 3 hours and 57 minutes of crossing, but the time compensation caused him to fall to third position, behind Rui Ramada’s Yess Racing (MRCYB), who was the winner of this first test of the Repsol Trophy; and the Aceites Abril of the Pérez Canal brothers (RCN Vigo), which is trying to revalidate the title of the last edition, came second.

ORC-CLASS 3

In the ORC 3 class, one of the most closely contested in the trophy, Vicente Cid’s Deep Blue 2.1 (RNC Vigo), who won the Comunica Trophy last weekend, arrived with enthusiasm and strength at this Spring Regatta and managed to climb to the top of the table. He overtook Bosch Service Solutions of Ramón Ojea (CM Canido), who came second; and Víctor Carrión’s Bom III (CN Punta Lagoa), who will reach the final in third position.

ORC-CLASS 4

The boats that competed in the ORC 4 class made a shorter course than the ORC 1-2-3. In the 20 miles that the regatta committee marked out to circumnavigate the Cíes, Luis Pérez’s Balea Dous (RNC Rodeira) demonstrated, once again, why he is one of the regulars on the podiums of the Rías Baixas competitions. He was the fastest in the test and will reach the final first. Following in the provisional classification are Victor Álvarez’s Nahela (CN Alagua) and Fernando Rey’s Albarellos (MRCYB).

ORC-CLASS A2

In the ORC A2 class, with teams made up of only two people, skipper and crew member, Javier Rey’s Q Talento Consultores, from Monte Real Yacht Club, was the winner; and Rodrigo Rodríguez’s Alalunga, from the Club Marítimo de Canido, came second.

J80 CLASS

In the J80 one-design competition, the largest fleet in the competition, Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen had the best result in the opening stage. The ocean navigator’s sailboat, with its usual crew, was the winner of the last edition and came ready to repeat victory. The provisional silver and bronze are held by the Maija of José Luis Pérez and the Marías of Manel Marías, all from the Monte Real Club de Yates.

FIGARO CLASS

The Figaro class drew attention for being the one in which the most women sailed, thanks to the participation of four female boats from the Monte Real Club de Yates Women’s Sailing project, which seeks to increase the presence of women in the regattas held in Galicia. One of them, the Erizana, skippered by Elena Raga, managed to climb to third position. Miguel Montes’s Tutatis and Alejandro Vázquez’s Bouvento were first and second.

LA COSTERA DOMINICAL WILL DECIDE THE WINNERS

The Repsol Trophy – 43rd Spring Regatta comes to an end this Sunday with the holding of the second and last race, the definitive one to configure the final classification. As on the first day, the crews will have to face a coastal route with departure and arrival in Baiona. It will take place along the Vigo estuary but the crossing points are yet to be decided, since they will depend on the wind.

If everything goes according to plan, the regatta committee will start the fleet around noon and in the afternoon, at half past six, the facilities of the Monte Real Club de Yates will host the awards ceremony for the winners, in which will be attended by the president of the club, José Luis Álvarez; Repsol’s marine and fishing manager, Inés González Megido, on behalf of the energy company, sponsor of the event; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; and the deputy for Sports of Pontevedra, Gorka Gómez.

The battle for Rande in the Repsol Trophy

 

· 50 sailboats will sail this Saturday to Rande Bridge to try to win the 43rd Monte Real Spring Regatta

· The crews will depart at the stroke of noon from Baiona towards the mythical bridge where they will turn to return again to the Bay of Baiona

50 sailboats will sail this Saturday from Baiona to the Rande bridge to try to win the Repsol Trophy that the Monte Real Yacht Club is organizing for yet another year with the collaboration of the Spanish energy company.

The 43rd edition of the Baionese club’s Spring Regatta will begin at twelve noon inside the Baionese bay, where the crews will hear the starting horn for the coastal route that will take them to the Rande bridge.

They will have to navigate to the mythical infrastructure, one of the most emblematic in Spain, with a wind that promises to be favorable for the competition, blowing from the northwest with between 12 and 16 knots of intensity.

It will be precisely in the vicinity of the bridge where the sailboats could encounter the greatest difficulties of the test, with significant roles of wind or even “wells” without wind, the possibility of having to navigate between rafts and very different conditions between the north face and the south.

The Commodore of the Monte Real Club de Yates, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, who is also participating in the competition, was very excited about the route, not only because it represents a change from previous editions, but also because he believes it will be very exciting for the fleet . “The sailors will have to put themselves to the test and haggle -says Otaegui- with a strategy that will be influenced by knowledge of the Vigo estuary, the tides and the fine trim of the sails. It won’t be as much of a melee as on the windward-leeward layouts, but it will certainly be very exciting.”.

Once Rande has been reached, the sailboats must turn to head back to Baiona, where the end point of the route will be located, if the wind allows it, inside the bay and, if there are difficulties, in the Carallones area.

In this 2021 edition, which will not go to Sanxenxo as in previous years to avoid the restrictions and problems derived from COVID19, some of the winners of the last edition will participate, such as Aceites Abril by the Pérez Canal brothers, Unus by Luis García Trigo or Okofen by Javier de la Gándara, among others.

We will also see three women’s crews on the water from the Monte Real Women’s Sailing project, with which the club intends to increase the presence of women in the regattas held in Galicia.

Monte Real celebrates its 43 springs with the Repsol Trophy

 

· The historic Spring Regatta of the Monte Real Yacht Club of Baiona celebrates its forty-third edition in 2021 with the sponsorship of Repsol and the participation of fifty boats

· The competition will be held on May 1 and 2 in the Vigo estuary with a route from Baiona to the Rande bridge and back to the bay and a return to the Cíes Islands

The Spring Regatta of the Monte Real Yacht Club of Baiona celebrates its forty-third edition this year with the celebration, next weekend, of two coastal regattas in the Vigo estuary. The historic event of the Baionese club, one of the most important heavyweight sailing events in Galicia and one of the longest-running on the Spanish nautical scene, returns to the scene one more year sponsored by Repsol, thus ratifying the support that, for years, the energy company lends to the sport of sailing.

“21 years have passed since Repsol joined the Monte Real Spring Regatta” said the company’s head of Marine and Fisheries, Inés González Megido, “And since then we have not only supported this competition, but many other inclusive club projects such as the Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities or the Women’s Sailing project to promote women in the nautical world. Initiatives that are a sample of everything positive that both the club and we can offer”.

In the official presentation of the event, held this Tuesday at Monte Real, the president of the club, José Luis Álvarez, assured that the club is proud to be able to organize a regatta that is now 43 years old. “It would have been 44 -said Álvarez- if last year COVID did not prevent us from celebrating it, but it is still a wonderful figure, which very few regattas have reached in Spain. It has been more than 4 decades starring in one of the great events with heavy sailing in Galicia, attended by the best crews not only from our community, but also from other parts of Spain and Portugal”

The person in charge of explaining the details of the competition was the Commodore of Monte Real, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, who said that the 43rd Spring Regatta – Repsol Trophy will be held on May 1 and 2 in the Vigo estuary and Baiona bay, with a forecast participation of fifty boats. This year, the novelty is that there will be no poles and the two tests in contention will be coastal routes.

On the first day of tests, during the first of May, the National Labor Day holiday, the participating sailboats must complete, starting at one in the afternoon, a route that will leave the bay of Baiona and cross the Vigo estuary up to the Rande bridge, where the crews will have to turn around to head back towards the bay of Baiona.

A day later, on Sunday May 2, the teams will embark again to play the second and last stage of the competition. Ahead of them will be a circumnavigation tour of the Cíes Islands, with departure and return, if the wind allows it, inside the bay of Baiona. The regatta committee will start this time at twelve noon and the forecast is that the crews will spend no more than 4 hours to cross the finish line.

The day will end on land with the awards ceremony for the winners, at half past six in the afternoon in the gardens of the Monte Real Yacht Club. The mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez, will participate in it, among others, who this Tuesday, in the official presentation, highlighted the work that the club has been doing for years “to make the name of Baiona known not only nationally but also internationally, with the celebration of events that go beyond our borders and are a very good reflection of all the good things that our town exports” .

With this type of competition, such as the Spring Regatta – Repsol Trophy, “the idea of normalcy in sport that we all need now” is also being “transmitted” said the Provincial Head of Sports of the Xunta de Galicia, Daniel Benavides, also present at the wheel of press. Benavides insisted on the need to continue organizing events “with the maximum health guarantees, like all those organized in Monte Real” .

From the Pontevedra Provincial Council, the deputy for sports, Gorka Gómez, thanked Repsol for supporting this event because “Without the companies that maintain their sponsorships, -he said- holding this type of event would be unfeasible, and Galicia needs that synergy of industry, tourism and sport to boost itself after the situation experienced last year”.

This situation, with the restrictions derived from COVID19, was what prevented the celebration, in 2020, of the 43rd Spring Regatta, which will be held this weekend in the waters of the Rías Baixas. In the last edition, that of 2019, the winners were the April Oils of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal (RCN Vigo) in ORC 1, the Unus of Luis García Trigo (MRCYB) in ORC 2, the Okofen of Javier de la Gándara (MRCYB) in the J80 competition and the Bouvento skippered by Luis Alcázar (MRCYB) in the Figaro class.

In this edition the same classes of ORCs, J80 and Fígaros will be maintained and there will be two more categories, ORC Open and ORC A2, with sailboats manned by only two people.

A total of 41 sailboats from Spain and Portugal competed this Saturday in the Vigo estuary for the Comunica Trophy, the first of the six heavy sailing regattas that the Monte Real Yacht Club has scheduled for 2021. After not being able to take place in 2020 due to COVID19, the Rías Baixas and northern Portugal fleet eagerly welcomed one of the most attractive races of the season, which runs along the estuary from Vigo to Baiona.

It was almost 17 miles that Julio Rodríguez’s Magical, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, sailed in just 2 hours and 17 minutes, becoming the fastest sailboat in the race. Despite everything, the compensation of times left him without the first place in his category, the ORC 1-2, which finally went to the Yess Racing of the Portuguese Rui Ramada, who haggled under the banner of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

The Portuguese crew received their winner’s award from Roberto Lira, executive director of Comunica Comunicación Visual, the event’s sponsor company, who also presented them with the award that recognized them as winners of the ORC 1-2-3-4 general classification . The second and third position in the large boats section were occupied, respectively, by Julio Rodríguez’s Magical; and the April Oils of the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, both of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo.

In ORC 3-4, the winner of the regatta was Deep Blue 2.0 owned by Vicente Cid (RCN Vigo), which left La Burla Negra owned by Juan J. Martínez (CN Castrelo de Miño) and Balea Dous owned by Luis Pérez (RCN Rodeira) with second and third place respectively. The vice president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, Alejandro Retolaza, was in charge of handing over the trophies.

This year, as a novelty, the competition included a category of A Two, and the couple formed by Víctor Carrión and Horacio Pequeno, aboard the Bon III from Punta Lagoa, won the final victory. The silver and bronze went to Unus led by Luis García Trigo and Carlos Quintas (MRCYB); and the Q Talent Consultants of Javier Rey and Jorge Justo (MRCYB). The person in charge of distributing the trophies of this class was the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez.

In the ORC Open class, the winners were Victor Manuel Álvarez’s Nahela, from Club Deportivo Alagua, who came first; and Victor Fernández’s Forza Catro (Vertigo Sailing) and Alejandro Castro’s Esquío (LM Bouzas), who came second and third.

In the last two categories in contention, those of the J80 and Figaros monotypes, the competition took place in real time. The fastest to complete the test among the J80 fleet were José Luis Pérez’s Maija, Luis de Mira’s Namasté and Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto. The sports deputy of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez, gave them the gold, silver and bronze respectively.

In the Figaro AEProtec class, the final podium was made up of Paula Rey’s Serralleiras, Javier Bernardez’s Bouvento and Nicolás Jourdain’s Silleiro. In this class, to which the commercial delegate of AEProtec, Antonio Saborido, presented the prizes, the three exclusively female boats of the Monte Real Club de Yates competed, with which the club tries to promote the presence of women in nautical competitions.

The Comunica Trophy was in charge of inaugurating the heavy sailing calendar of the Monte Real Yacht Club, which in 2021 has six scheduled regattas. The next appointment is with the Repsol Trophy , the club’s mythical Spring Regatta, which this year celebrates its forty-third edition. It will come later, on June 5, the Galician Two-handed Championship, organized by the Baionese club for the tenth consecutive year by delegation of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation.

Between July 7 and 11, the Xacobeo Rally will be held, between Baiona and Portosín; and July and September will again be the months of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy (from July 23 to 25) and the Prince of Asturias Trophy (between September 3 and 5), which will include the delivery of the National Awards for another year Sailing Terras Gauda.

40 boats in contention for the Comunica Trophy

 

· The Monte Real Club de Yates organizes a new edition of the competition with the collaboration of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo and the sponsorship of the visual communication company Comunica

40 boats will compete this Saturday in a new edition of the Comunica Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the collaboration of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo and the sponsorship of the visual communication company Comunica.

Among the crews that aspire to take the laurels of the ORC class we will see the Yess Too of the Portuguese Rui Ramada, the Aceites Abril of the Ourenses Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, the Pairo Marnatura skippered by Luis Bugallo, the Magical of Julio Rodríguez or Al Balea Dous by Luis Pérez.

This year, as a novelty, there is also a trophy for the ORC A2 category, for sailboats with a skipper and a single crew member, in which some nautical couples have registered, such as those made up of Jacobo Vecino and Brenda Maure aboard the Salaño Dos ; or Javier Rey and Jorge Justo, in the Q Talent Consultants.

The Luxoconf by Jean Claude Sarrade, the SND Cormorán by Francisco Martínez, the Ifaclinic by Joao Allen, La Galera by Miguel Fernandez and the Pazo de Cea by Iago Carballo are some of the J80s that will compete for victory in this class of one-designs, which it will not be the only one, as there will also be a category for the Figaro Beneteau.

The latter will be sailed by the crews led by Teresa Valladares, aboard the Ladeira; or Javier Bernardez in the Bouvento.

In the absence of the deadline for registration, which will remain open until one hour before the start of the competition, there are already nearly 200 sailors who will leave Vigo this Saturday at two in the afternoon for Baiona for the final victory .

They will have a route of about 15 miles ahead of them with several steps through beacons for which the weather forecast announces winds from the south southwest with an average of 8 knots and peaks of up to 18, which could be even more intense given the probability that record showers at times.

Once the competition is over, the Monte Real Club de Yates will host the awards ceremony for the winners, in which the president of the Baiona club, José Luis Álvarez; the executive director of Comunica, Roberto Lira; the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; and the deputy for sports from the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez.

After launching the J80 Winter League and celebrating the Spanish Optimist Championship, the Monte Real Club de Yates inaugurates this Saturday the heavy sailing season with the Comunica Trophy, the first of the six regattas for cruisers that the club from Baiona has scheduled for this 2021.

A coastal route between Vigo and Baiona will be the route that the participating sailboats (which will be able to compete in ORC, ORC Open, ORC Double Handed, J80 or Fígaro) must complete to win the final victory, which will be resolved in a single day.

Although it will be the weather that dictates the final route, the intention of the regatta committee is to make the fastest boats pass by a mark while the rest sail directly, with the aim that everyone can reach the finish more or less at the same time.

The arrival point will be located in the vicinity of the Baiona dock and once the race is over, it will be the Monte Real Yacht Club itself that will host the award ceremony for the winners, at seven in the afternoon.

As a novelty this year, one of the categories in contention will be the ORC Double Handed, in which the sailboats will be manned by only two people. This is a change accepted by the organizing club after receiving requests from some owners who want to be able to participate in more regattas within this modality to prepare for the Galician A2 Championship to be held in June.

One of the sailboats that will participate in this category will be the Salaño Dos of Jacobo Vecino and Brenda Maure, which will face, among others, the Q Talento Consultores of Javier Rey and Jorge Justo; to Lacazán by Mariano Benavente and Genoveva Pereiro; or the Alalunga by Rodrigo Rodríguez and Carlos Cárdenas.

In ORC there will be three of the regulars of the great regattas in Galicia: the Yess Racing of the Portuguese Rui Ramada, the Aceites Abril of the Pérez Canal brothers and the Pairo skippered by Luis Bugallo. And for the J80 competition, Jean Claude Sarrade’s Luxoconf, Francisco Martínez’s SND Cormorán, Joao Allen’s Ifaclinic, Miguel Fernandez’s La Galera, Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva and the Pazo de Cea by Iago Carballo.

In the last edition of the competition, held in 2019 (in 2020 there was no due to COVID19 restrictions), the Nahela of Club Deportivo Alagua, skippered by Victor Manuel Álvarez, won. He won the general classification and also took the victory in the ORC 1 class. In ORC 2 the winner was the Abal Abogados of Mariano Dios (Ro Yacht Club), and in monotypes the Cansino of Fernando Yáñez and the Ladeira of Genoveva Pereiro prevailed. The fastest boat to complete the course (11.9 miles in just 2 hours and 7 minutes) was the Swan 45 Yess Too of the Portuguese Rui Ramada.

This new edition of the Comunica Trophy is once again sponsored, for yet another year, and there are now five (four cruise editions and one monotype exclusive), by Comunica Comunicación Visual, a firm that offers printing services, labels, industrial design and articles acrylics to all of Galicia from the municipality of A Guarda, where its main headquarters are located. For months now, under the signature of AEProtec, they have also been manufacturing masks, screens and other products related to protection against COVID19.

1. ORGANIZATION

The REPSOL Trophy will be organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates (MRCYB) with the sponsorship of REPSOL.

3. RULES

3.2 The infraction of the Rules in AR and IR of this event indicated as[NP] , it will not be a reason for protests between ships. This modifies Rule 60.1(a) RRS.

3.2 Measures in relation to COVID-19.

3.2.1 Access to the facilities will not be allowed for those people whose body temperature exceeds 37.5 degrees or those who refuse to pass the temperature control. This decision does not constitute a reason to request a remedy (this modifies RRS 62.1(a)).

3.2.2[SP] Failure to comply with the “Security Protocol in relation to COVID-19” will lead, after a hearing, to the imposition of penalties at the discretion of the Protest Committee” with a minimum of two places in the test or tests to be determined.

3.3 The infraction of the Rules in AR and IR of this event indicated as[DP] , indicates that your penalty may be lighter than disqualification if the Protest Committee so decides. The abbreviation for the discretionary penalty imposed pursuant to this instruction shall be[DPI] .

3.4 The penalty for infractions of the IR indicated as[SP] they will be fixed, without a hearing and imposed by the Regatta Committee in each test infringed during the day (modifies Rules 63.1 and A5 of the RRS).

4. PARTICIPANTS

4.1 Participation in this regatta is limited to boats with an ORC International, ORC, OPEN or ORC A2 or Club certificate valid for 2021, as well as the J80 and Figaro monotypes.
4.2 Participants must comply with the eligibility rules of the WS

4.3 Groups and Classes.

An ORC group is established that will be divided into classes, as well as those of the different monotypes:

J80 class – J80 monotypes
Figaro class (***) – Figaro Monotypes
A2 (****) – A2

(*) In ORC, in view of the registrations made and as soon as their effective participation in the regatta is verified, the Regatta Committee and Organizing Committee will establish the classes and cuts of the same, seeking the greatest possible equity, not admitting claims about it.

(**) In the Special Open Class, only boats that do not enter the classes indicated in (*) will be admitted. This class will have to fill out a registration form with specifications of material on board.
In any case, the Regatta Committee and the Organizing Committee of the regatta will have the power to include, at their discretion, in the Open Class the boats they deem appropriate, not admitting claims in this regard.

(***) The Figaros will run in real time and only in their class.

(****) In class A2 they will race under the Double Handed rating (those boats with an ORC certificate may request it free of charge from the RFEV).

4.4 One designs will only compete in their class and in real time.

To form a class, there must be a minimum of 6 registered.

5. ELIGIBILITY

5.1 Participants must comply with the eligibility conditions reflected in Regulation 19 of the World Sailing and the prescriptions of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation related to said regulation.

5.2 Participants of nationality or legal residence in Spain must be in possession of the athlete’s federation license for 2021.

6. ADVERTISING [NP] [DP]

6.1 Participants may display advertising, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation 20 of World Sailing and the Advertising and Competition Regulations of the Royal Galician Sailing Federation.

6.2 In accordance with World Sailing Regulation 20, participants may be required to display advertising on the forward 20% of the hull, on each side of the boat and on the sides of the boom, as well as possible advertising pennants on the backstay of each boat. All this would be provided at the MRCYB race office once your registration is confirmed.

6.3 Modifications to the stickers provided by the organizing committee are not allowed. Violation of this IR will entail a penalty of 2 places in the test.

6.4 The Monte Real Club de Yates reserves the right to demand the elimination or substitution of any type of publicity, message or image displayed during the celebration of the event of the boats or the equipment of their crew members, which does not comply with the moral and ethical standards of general acceptance (Regulation 20 of the World Sailing) or contravene the interests of the organizing club. This includes holding races on the regatta course, at the club’s facilities or while at the regatta committee’s disposal.

6.5 The owner or skipper of the boat with advertising will be asked to indicate or show the type of advertising that will be displayed during the celebration of the regatta, for the approval of the organizing committee.

6.6 The participating owners and crews grant their authorization to the MRCYB so that any photograph, image or video of people or boats taken during the days of the regatta may be published in any medium, such as television advertisements, editorial comments, information , advertising, etc.

7. INSCRIPTIONS AND BONUSES

7.1 Entries will necessarily be formalized on the official form (it accompanies this document and/or is available at www.mrcyb.es).

7.2 The registration fees will be the following:

7.4 To be accepted, an application for registration must be submitted or submitted with the following documentation:

• Registration form duly completed and signed.
• Proof of payment, as specified in 7.2.
• For foreign athletes who do not have a federative license or athlete’s medical insurance that insures them in the event of an accident, they must prove that they have insurance against accidents and illness valid in Spain.
• Valid and signed ORC measurement certificate (ORC fleet only).
• Photocopy of civil liability insurance and damage to third parties for a minimum coverage of €336,556 and coverage for all crew members on board and policy extension for participation in non-professional regattas.
• List of security elements (depending on whether ORC or Monotype) duly covered and signed.

7.5 The application for registration must have the approval of the Organizing Committee of the Monte Real Club de Yates.

7.7 Registration period.
The registration period will end on April 27, 2021. The Organizing Committee reserves the right to extend said period. If registrations are accepted after the deadline, the cost of these will be increased by 20%.

7.8 Registration of Participants
Each owner or skipper must register and personally sign the registration form at the MRCYB Regatta Office before 11:00 a.m. on May 1, 2021.

7.9 Admission of Participants
The registration of a boat will not be accepted if, before the time indicated in section 7.8, it does not present the documents specified in 7.4 at the Regatta Office or does not have the approval of the Organizing Committee.

8. PROGRAM

8.1 The program of the event is as follows:

Friday, April 30

12:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. – Presentation of documentation and delivery of Sailing Instructions.

Saturday, May 1

10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. – Presentation of documentation and delivery of Sailing Instructions.

1:00 p.m. – Coastal tour for all classes (departure from Baiona cove).

7:30 p.m. – Tasting, if the COVID restrictions on the date allow it.

Sunday, May 2

12:00 hours – Coastal Tour.

6:30 p.m. – Award ceremony.

8.2 On Sunday, May 2, no attention signal will be given later than 3:30 p.m. GPS time.

8.3 Two coastal tests are scheduled (one on Saturday and the other on Sunday), which may be modified at the discretion of the organizing committee.

8.4 The Sailing Instructions may introduce variations in the routes or in the scheduled program, depending on the circumstances that occur, mainly weather.

9. INSPECTION AND MEASUREMENTS [DP]

Measurements and daily checks of certificates and safety may be carried out by the measurement committee on regatta days.

10. SCORE

10.1 The Low Score System Appendix A4 of the RRS will apply.

10.2 There will be no discards.

11. COMPENSATION SYSTEM AND RANKINGS

11.1 ORC rankings will be established according to one of the following compensation systems:
For cruising, compound course, and if not possible, coastal regatta will apply.

All this always at the discretion of the regatta official, not admitting claims in this regard.

11.2 Class classifications will be established (provided that the provisions of points 4.2. and 4.3 are met).

11.3 The one design classes (J80 and Figaro) will only qualify in real time.

12. SECURITY [NP] [DP]

12.1 The safety of the regatta is considered as Category 4, in accordance with the Special Rules of Regatta of the World Sailing (for one designs they will be specific to them).

12.2 The participants undertake to carry on board, under their responsibility, the updated regulatory documentation of the vessel, as well as the appropriate qualification for the management of the vessel and the navigation to be carried out.

13. PRIZES

The list of prizes will be exposed in the TOA, in view of the participants and registered, before the start of the 1st test.

14. BERTHS

The boats formally registered in this regatta and that do not belong to the MRCYB fleet, will have a reserved mooring or anchoring place (mooring under the exclusive responsibility of the owner or skipper), free of charge at the MRCYB, from April 25 to May 8.

15. COMMUNICATIONS [NP] [DP]

15.1 The Race Committee will use Channel 72 VHF for its communications during the celebration of the tests.

15.2 All participating boats must have an operational VHF radio receiver installed on board, equipped with at least VHF channels 09 (156.450Mhz), 16 (156.800Mhz) and 72 (156.610Mhz).

16. OFFICIAL SOCIAL ACTS

16.1 The award ceremony will take place on the terrace of the MRCYB, once the general classifications of the tests have been published on May 5, 2021 (approximately 4:30 p.m.).

17. LIABILITY

17.1 All boats participating in the regatta do so at their own risk and responsibility.

17.2 The Monte Real Club de Yates, the organizing authority or any other person or body involved in the organization of the event, rejects any responsibility for loss, damage, injury or inconvenience that may occur to people or things, both on land and at sea, as a result of participating in the tests covered by this Notice of Race.

17.3 Attention is drawn to Fundamental Rule 4 DECISION TO RACE in part 1 of the RRS which states:

“It is the sole responsibility of a ship to decide whether to participate in a
test or if it continues in regatta”

INTERVIEW WITH MRCYB COMMODOR IGNACIO SÁNCHEZ OTAEGUI

Of the 9 regattas scheduled in 2020, the Monte Real Club de Yates was able to hold 7 (J80 Winter League, Galician Optimist Championship, Galician Solitaire and Two-handed Championship, Conde de Gondomar Trophy, Prince of Asturias Trophy, Autumn League de J80 and Liga Española de Vela), a good figure in a scenario full of cancellations due to COVID19.

This year, the club’s forecast is to be able to hold 10 competitions, but everything will depend, as in 2020, on the restrictions that the authorities approve to prevent the advance of the coronavirus, measures that forced the start of competitions to be postponed. January to February, but which gave the green light to the following regattas.

The first of the sporting events at Monte Real was the Baitra J80 Winter League, which is being held and will last until next May. One of the regular participants in this one-design league is the commodore of the Monte Real Yacht Club, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, responsible for the sporting part of the Baion club, with whom we talked about the regattas scheduled for 2021.

Both as a commodore and as a sailor, you will be looking forward to the recovery of sporting normality, right?

Since the beginning of the restrictions on mobility and sports practice, the MRCYB has tried to develop its sports program and last year we have complied with 85 percent. This year our intention is to continue with the same idea and, although we have started with strong limitations, I hope, as Commodore and sailor, to be able to meet our objectives and some more that we have set for ourselves for this year.

With the Baitra J80 Winter League already underway, they also held the Galician Optimist Qualifying and the Spanish Optimist Championship, two light sailing competitions. Although 90 percent of the Monte Real competitions are “for adults”, they always schedule one dedicated to future promises. Should we continue betting on children’s sailing?

Children’s sailing is the basis of sports and competition sailing and we will only be able to have high-level sailors if we achieve a broad critical mass on which the best stand out. However, the objective of the Club is not to have the best competitors. Rather, we consider sporting success as a consequence of the attendance of many children in our school, who have fun in the sea and who enjoy this medium from a very young age.

Just around the corner are the Comunica Trophy and the Repsol Trophy, two classics on their calendar that have been sponsored by the same companies for years, something quite complicated these days. How do you manage to convince a sponsor to bet on sailing, a sport that many consider to be a minority?

It’s complicated, and not because companies don’t want to, but because many times they can’t. The situation has changed over the years and sponsorships are no longer what they used to be, but many companies continue to understand the need to bet on sport and the positive impact that this has on their image level. In the case of Repsol, at the club we have been lucky enough to have had them for many years and we are enormously grateful to them. They sponsor one of the club’s most emblematic regattas, the Spring Regatta, which everyone has known for some time as the Repsol Trophy. We have been with Comunica for fewer years but their commitment to sailing seems firm and we hope to be able to count on them for much longer.

Last year, fully involved in the pandemic, they summoned the media to release the “bombshell” that they had managed to make the 52 SUPER SERIES land in Baiona. Finally it will not be in 2021 as announced but in 2022 to save possible problems with the COVID restrictions. How does one stay after getting one of the top three sailing competitions in the world to be held at your club?

The MRCYB has always had an international vocation, in fact it is worth remembering the Plymouth-Baiona, Bermuda-Baiona regattas of yesteryear and even the fact of having been the first Spanish club to present a Copa América challenge in 1989. Getting to host a TP52 Super Series returns our club to its presence in major international sailing events. It is one of our objectives and also reinforces the projection of Baiona, the Rías Baixas and Galicia as a quality destination in an event with great media impact.

In June comes the Galician Solitaire and Two Championship, one of the most emblematic regional tests, which has almost become a Monte Real competition, because they have been organizing it for 10 consecutive years. What is so special about this regatta that they bet so much on it?

It is a regatta that we really like a lot because of the good reception it has in the fleet. It is different because of the demands it entails and it is organized on a very attractive date, at the beginning of summer and in good weather. The Royal Galician Sailing Federation continues to bet on us as organizers and our intention is to keep this test on our calendar, which also bears the name of Rafael Olmedo Memorial, in memory of the one who for many years was president of our club, as well as a person very dear. And this year also comes with news. Within the framework of a whole program of initiatives that we are launching to promote women’s sailing, we have managed to ensure that the competition has, from now on, a specific section for women, with a specific trophy for them. With this we hope to get many of the Galician patron saints and sailors encouraged to participate in the championship.

July will once again be, as always, the month of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy, which is celebrating its forty-sixth edition. In recent years they have been introducing a series of changes with which routes and tests have been modified. Tell us what has been the objective of these modifications and if you plan to make any more in 2021.

The Conde de Gondomar regatta is the oldest event currently organized by Monte Real and probably the most emblematic and different, as it combines deep-sea, medium-distance and technical routes. This year, despite the fact that our intention is to maintain the spirit of the race, we want to introduce a variant in its hardest stage, the climb to Carrumeiro Chico, an old lighthouse very close to Finisterre, in such a way that it is divided into two stages with arrival in Portosin. Before making the decision, we discussed it with the owners and regular participants and the truth is that it was well received.

What does not change is the Prince of Asturias Trophy, which continues with the same scheme and is also its most successful regatta, the one with the greatest participation and in which everyone wants to haggle. Last year was the first in which he experienced the regatta as a club commodore and not just as a sailor. How complicated is it to organize a test like this?

The organization of this regatta is the biggest annual sporting and social challenge of the club. It is in both aspects since, on the one hand, we have to ensure the best organization of the different regatta fields for the different categories of boats and all this with their regatta officials, beacons, inflatable boats, sailors, press, etc. And on the other hand, to provide coverage on land for the more than 500 sailors who compete in this prestigious event on the national calendar. As I say, it is quite a challenge, but we face it well thanks to the experience of organizing it for many years.

And after the hustle and bustle of the Prince, at the end of the year they return to focus on the J80 with the celebration of the Autumn League. It is a monotype that they have been betting on for years and with which they have managed to be selected for the celebration of the 2023 World Cup. What else is left for them to do regarding the J80?

It is true that the club has made a strong commitment to this class, which continues to grow and currently has units on our jetties competing regularly. The 2023 World Cup is an award for this trajectory and we set it as a reference to organize other national championships such as the 2022 Spanish Championship and the 2023 Spanish Cup. Everything to get to that important appointment with the best competitive level.

We have made a fairly extensive tour of the Monte Real Club de Yates regattas in 2021, now the only thing left is for COVID to allow them to be held, right?

So is. We will have to wait to see how the pandemic evolves, but we are optimistic. From the moment that restrictive measures were adopted, Monte Real adapted to the situation in terms of sports, and the activity of the sailing school and regattas was organized according to the rules that at any time allowed some type of sailing practice. candle. In this sense, we must highlight that practically the entire program of regattas and sailing activity was carried out in 2020. This year we hope that, although some test may be postponed, we can fulfill the program for the most part. In any case, I would also like to highlight that, in the situation we are experiencing, we have seen a greater interest in sailing and that makes us very happy.
