The Monte Real Yacht Club of Baiona participated these days in Saltsjobaden (Stockholm – Sweden) in the tenth edition of the European and South American Conference of the ICOYC (International Council of Yacht Clubs), the association that brings together the 44 main yacht clubs in the world. world.
The club’s commodore, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, was in charge of representing Monte Real in the talks and activities organized, on this occasion, by the Royal Swedish Yacht Club (KSSS).
A fellowship meal on Thursday the 16th and a gala dinner on Saturday the 18th marked the beginning and end of an event in which, in different talks and conferences, issues related, mainly, to the promotion of nautical sports from different perspectives were addressed. .
Although other current topics such as the Copa América in Barcelona or the Olympic Games in Paris were also discussed, attendees from all over the world focused their interventions on issues related to the improvements to be included by the clubs to advance their sustainability and in initiatives to be launched to make the sport of sailing more attractive.
El Monte Real, although on this occasion it was not an official speaker, presented in Sweden some of the actions framed in its sustainability project, such as the design and construction of an electric travelift, which allows boats of up to 25 tons to be lifted and taken out of the water to take them to their stranding point using only electricity.
Nowadays, a good part of the cranes used in Spain to beach ships operate with diesel engines and hydraulic systems, with the damage to the environment that this entails and the risks of environmental pollution that it entails. With the creation of this electric crane, the MRCYB avoided these damages and moved towards a more sustainable future.
The commodore of Monte Real, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, also spoke in Sweden about the actions related to water, waste management, energy consumption and security in the facilities that the club has implemented over the years and that have allowed it to display, uninterruptedly, the blue flag since 1988.
Another of the projects presented to the ICOYC members was the solar boat of the University of Vigo with which the club collaborates. An initiative born from the hand of a group of students from the School of Telecommunications Engineering guided by the founder of the company Marine Instruments and director of Monte Real, Francisco Pino. It is a boat with foils that is powered by photovoltaic cells.
These are three of the many steps taken by the MRCYB to be, over the years, an increasingly sustainable club. One of the latest has been the use of a zero-emission renewable fuel in the support boats of its most crowded competitions, with which, thanks to the collaboration of Repsol, it managed to reduce the environmental footprint of the regattas.
All this and much more was discussed at the tenth edition of the ICOYC (International Council of Yacht Clubs) conference, an association that brings together the 44 main yacht clubs in the world.
It includes, among others, the San Diego Yacht Club (USA), the Clube Naval de Cascais (Portugal), the Yacht Club de Monaco, the Societe Nautique de Marseille (France), the Royal Yhames Yacht Club (London), the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (New Zealand), the Royal Natal Yacht Club (South Africa) or the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (Canada).
In the list of member clubs, in addition to the Monte Real Club de Yates, there are two other Spanish clubs: the Real Club Náutico de Palma and the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona. Since its admission into the prestigious group, in 2021, Monte Real has attended and participated in several ICOYC congresses, also participating as an official speaker on two occasions.
