The forty-first edition of the traditional Monte Real Yacht Club Spring Regatta got off to a strong start, which this year is once again the Repsol Trophy and hosts the J80 class Spanish Championship.
On the first day of tests for the national title, held this Saturday in Baiona, the contenders for the title of the J80 monotypes competed for three tasks inside the Bay of Baiona. They did so in very good conditions, on a day with little cloudiness with a northwesterly wind that remained stable and always above 12 knots, even reaching 15 at times.
The Basques from the AD Grupo Garatu, armed by Juan Vázquez, were the protagonists of the day, with a brilliant performance in all the tests. With Iker Almandoz at the helm, the sailboat manned by Íñigo Jáuregui, Íñigo Sánchez and Borja Ponte, signed three first places in the three routes and became leader of the classification.
In second position was another of the favorites to win the championship, Javier Aguado’s Maui Jim Sunglasses. The Menorcans, with aspirations to revalidate the title they won in 2016, started somewhat weakly, with a fourth place in the first test, but managed to overcome the following ones and with two seconds they took over the provisional silver.
The Galician crew of the Okofen, led by the historic Javier de la Gándara, closes the provisional podium. Wearing the organizing club’s pendant, Gándara and his team demonstrated why they were the best J80 Galician team last season.
In addition to the J80s that are competing for the Spanish Championship of the class, cruisers, figaros and J70s participate in the Repsol Trophy this 2018, and all of them took to the water on this first day of competition. For the former, the regatta committee designed a route of just over 13 miles through the Vigo estuary, which was hotly contested in the cruising-regatta and cruising classes.
The Oral Group Galimplant of the Real Club Náutico de Sanxenxo, skippered by Pedro Pazos, won on this first day by just 7 seconds, which it managed to beat Bosch Service Solutions of the Club Marítimo de Canido, which is second overall in the cruise class- race. One of the boats that promised to put up a fight in the competition, Rui Ramada’s MBA Atlántico, had to withdraw shortly after the start due to a problem between the Carallones and La Negra beacons.
In the cruise class, the leadership is for the Fend la Bise of Jean Claude Sarrade, of the Monte Real Club de Yates; which is closely followed by one of its biggest competitors, the Balea Dous of Luis Pérez, of the Real Club Náutico de Rodeira.
In class A Dos, after a spectacular start and start of the route, Victor Carrión and Ana Sardiña’s Menudeta had to withdraw from the test due to a problem with the spy, leaving Jacobo Vecino and Brenda Maure’s Salaño Dos and Q Talento Javier Rey and Jorge Justo fighting for first place. Finally it was the Salaño who was placed at the top of the provisional podium.
In the Figaro class, which also completed a coastal route of about 13 miles, the victory of the day went to Elena Raga’s Serralleiras. The Erizana skippered by Alberto Iglesias and the Silleiro of José García de Miguel, are second and third respectively.
And in the J70 competition, which took place at the Cíes Islands anchorage, the provisional classification was very close, with the first four boats separated by just one point of difference. José Luis Freire’s Marnatura, skippered by the young Luis Bugallo, is in the lead with 8 points. It is followed by the Marina Rubicón of Alfredo González, with 9; and Denis Cherevalenko’s Joy Full, who arrived from Tallinn, closes the provisional podium with 10.
The Repsol Trophy continues tomorrow, Sunday, in Baiona with the second day of tests at an earlier time. At eleven o’clock in the morning, the starting horn will be given, inside the bay of Baiona, to the first of the three races scheduled in the J80 Spanish Championship. An hour later, at twelve noon, the tests of the J70 will begin at the Cíes Islands anchorage; and at one o’clock it will be the turn of the cruisers and the figaros, who will once again dispute a coastal tour of the Rías Baixas. In the afternoon, once the competition on the water is over, the Monte Real Yacht Club will offer the crews participating in the Repsol Trophy a seafood dinner and a beer and gin and tonic tasting.
