Baiona celebrated this afternoon, with great public success and participation, the first edition of the Solidarity Vertiathlon, a sports competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Baiona council with the sponsorship of Verti Seguros and the collaboration of the Galician Federation of triathlon.
The objective of the same, in addition to enjoying the spectacular nature of a triathlon in an incomparable setting, was to raise funds for the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School, which for years has been serving different associations and groups of people with disabilities.
At five in the afternoon, more than 200 people lined up behind the starting line on A Barbeira beach to compete in a sprint triathlon that included swimming, cycling and running events.
The participants in the different categories, from junior to veteran, swam 750 meters between the beaches of A Barbeira and A Ribeira, cycled 20 kilometers along the main road of Baiona, and ran 5 kilometers around the Parador Nacional.
Together with them, the paratriathlete from Vigo Susana Rodríguez Gacio, who in addition to sponsoring the Vertiathlon, wanted to compete in the event and participate in the awards ceremony held at the Monte Real Yacht Club facilities.
In the absolute category, the winners of this first Solidarity Vertiathlon of Baiona were Brais Misa García, from the Porriño Athletics Club, and Mar Villar Zamuz, from Trinorth Nogasa. In addition to the trophy accrediting their gold in the competition, they received annual car insurance as a prize courtesy of Verti Seguros.
José Benito Silva Sayáns, from the Axa Agencia Garriga Beariz Triathlon, and Cristina Torres Hervés, from the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club, received the male and female awards in the cadet category; and Xurxo Rigueira Díaz, from the Mar de Vigo Triathlon Club, the male junior.
In the veterans category, the winners were José Manuel Pardo Leis, from the Arteixo Triathlon, and María del Carmen Cabaleiro, from the La Fuente Cycling Club.
Prizes were also awarded to the first general classified classified in Baiona, who were Sandra Santodomingo Fabián and Antonio Liébanas Méndez; and eight insurances were raffled among all the participants.
At the end of the distribution of trophies, the General Director of Verti Seguros, Enrique Flores, who also competed in the triathlon, presented the Monte Real Club de Yates with a check for an amount of 5,750 euros. That amount, raised with the inscriptions of the test, will go entirely to the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities.
The person in charge of collecting it was the vice president of the Baiona club, Alejandro Retolaza, who thanked Verti, the Baiona council and the Galician Triathlon Federation for having made this solidarity competition a reality. He also highlighted the support of a large number of firms and companies that altruistically collaborated with the Vertiathlon.
Retolaza ended his speech by thanking the entire public for their participation and launching into the air the wish to be able to bring them together, next year, in a second edition of the competition.
