Angra do Heroismo, April 23, 2016.- The Monte Real Yacht Club and the Angra Iate Clube have just presented in Angra do Heroismo (Azores) the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race , the oceanic regatta that will depart on July 3 from the Galician fishing village towards the Portuguese archipelago. The competition is the first major nautical event organized hand in hand between the regions of Galicia and Azores.
This was highlighted to the media by the president of the Angra Iate Clube, Augusto Silva, when speaking of a sports twinning that he hopes, he said, will continue over the years. The Monte Real Club de Yates has influenced the same idea, and is grateful for the support provided by the government of Azores in order to make a regatta a reality that, they say, could be repeated biannually.
Both clubs coincide in highlighting the great tourist and cultural attraction shared by Baiona and Angra do Heroismo, which can be extended –they say- to Galicia and Terceira Island, and at the disposal of the participants in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race. Visits to the main cities, routes through nature or gastronomic tastings are some of the bonuses with which the sports program of the competition is complemented, in which the Portuguese and Spanish Sailing Federations, the Municipal Chamber of Angra do Heroismo, the Regional Directorate of Tourism and Portos dos Açores.
A round trip regatta between Galicia and Azores
The Baiona Angra Atlantic Race will be a roundtrip regatta, with two different competition stages. The first will leave on July 3 from the town of Baiona, in Galicia, bound for Angra do Heroismo, on the Terceira Island of the Azores archipelago. A journey of 865 miles that the boats must complete in a maximum time of 9 days and 8 hours.
Once they arrive at Terceira Island, the crews will have free moorings in the Angra do Heroismo marina and will be able to participate in an extensive leisure and tourism program , prepared especially for the participating sailors, their families and friends.
After the awards ceremony for the first stage, which will be held on July 13 at the Angra Iate Clube, the second stage will begin, back to Baiona. The sailboats will depart on July 14 and upon their arrival in Galicia the final awards ceremony will be held at the Monte Real Club de Yates. The best boats of each stage and of the complete regatta will be distinguished in each of the categories, and prizes will also be awarded to the winners of each stage and of the general in real time.
A maximum of 40 boats and discounts on registration until the end of April
A maximum of 40 boats with a minimum length of 30 feet or of the Mini 6.50 class can participate in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race. The registration period will remain open until June 3 and there will be discounts for crews who register before April 30.
To date, 25 percent of the available places have been covered, with boats with both Portuguese and Spanish crews. Among the participants already registered is, among others, the two-time cruiser world champion and Platu 25 world runner-up, Jesús Pintos .

Co-organized by the Angra Iate Clube and the Monte Real Yacht Club, this competition is the first major nautical event organized in partnership between the Regiões da Galiza and dos Açores.
It was also highlighted this afternoon in the media by the president of Angra Iate Clube, Augusto Silva, to refer to this sporting geminação that he hopes will last for many more years. An idea that also stands out from the Monte Real Yacht Club, which thanks or provides support for the Governo dos Açores in no sense of making this regatta possible, which, they say, can be repeated biannually.
Both clubs highlight the great tourist and cultural attraction that Baiona and Angra do Heroísmo share, extendable – say – to Galiza and Ilha Terceira, and that is available to all participants in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race.
