The Baiona Angra Atlantic Race sets sail back to Galicia

· The second stage of the ocean regatta organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Angra Iate Clube departed this afternoon from the Azores towards Baiona

· Six ships with Spanish and Portuguese crews will compete for victory in a journey of some 865 miles through Atlantic waters

· The competition will end on the 23rd at the facilities of the Monte Real Club de Yates with the awards ceremony for the winners

With some delay according to the scheduled time, the second stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race departed this afternoon for Galicia, the ocean regatta organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Angra Iate Clube with the collaboration of different Azorean institutions and the Provincial Council from Pontevedra.

The low wind that was recorded at the time set for the start was what forced the start of a race to be postponed for a little over half an hour in which the six participating boats must complete the 865 miles that separate the Azorean town of Angra do Heroism of the Galician coast.

The first 200 miles will undoubtedly be the most complex for a fleet that will have to seek, in an area characterized by little wind, the best possible conditions to achieve the necessary momentum that will allow them to separate themselves from the rest of the boats.

Once they achieve it, everything will depend on the good work of the crews, both when choosing a course and when carrying out the manoeuvres. It will also influence, at least in some boats, their ability to adapt to changes, since there have been modifications in some equipment.

The Saint Maxime del Monte Real Club de Yates, which managed to win the first stage with Miguel Lago at the wheel, is now skippered by Gerardo Alonso. The Portuguese Xekmatt, from the Lisbon Naval Association, also changed leadership, in which José Carlos Prista left the controls in the hands of Hugo Prista.

Pablo Toja replaces Yann Lascan on the Free Spirit, from the Real Club Marítimo de Abra; and Antonio Tea to Unai Basurko aboard the Pakea Cadenote, which now also sails through the Club Marítimo de Canido. The Atlantis del Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas, which continues to be led by Iván Prieto, maintains the same pattern; and the Cleopatra of the Recreational Nautical Association, with José Rafael Ribeiro at the controls.

The evolution of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race can be followed minute by minute via the internet thanks to a monitoring system that will show the data of each boat, the longitude and latitude at which they are and the speed and direction they are sailing .

The competition will end on July 23 in Baiona with the award ceremony for the winners, in a ceremony to be held at nine o’clock at night in the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

Winners of the first stage

The first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, between Baiona and Angra do Heroismo, was won by Saint Maxime del Monte Real Club de Yates, skippered by Miguel Lago, who completed the race in just 5 days, 13 hours and 43 minutes. The second position went to its most direct rival throughout the competition, José Carlos Prista’s Xekmatt, from the Lisbon Naval Association.

The bronze went to Cleopatra from the Recreational Nautical Association; and the Free Spirit and the Atlantis, from the Real Club Marítimo de Abra and the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas, completed the classification. The rest of the boats that left Baiona for the Azores were forced to abandon the regatta for different reasons, mostly related to technical problems in the boats.

The president of Monte Real makes the traditional offering of the sea in Panxón

(Photo: Alberto Rodriguez)

· The person in charge of the Baion club, Jose Luis Álvarez, was in charge of presenting this year’s offering to the sea on behalf of the sports marina

· In his speech he reviewed all the challenges that people who work in one way or another at sea have to face on a daily basis

· The event was held in the Votive Temple of Panxón and was attended by numerous religious, military and civil authorities

The president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez, was in charge of presenting, this afternoon at the votive temple of Panxón (Nigrán), the traditional offering of the sea to the Virgen del Carmen, a ceremony that has been held every year since 1939, organized on a rotating basis by the merchant, fishing and sports navies and by the Navy.

In his speech before the numerous authorities present, the president of the Baiona club reviewed the challenges that the sea presents to the people who work or are related to it on a daily basis. “Challenges – he said- like those of the fishermen and shellfish collectors who have to face their harsh conditions to support their families. Or the challenges of the Navy, ready to always help those who need it with a duty of service worthy of admiration and respect”.

José Luis Álvarez also mentioned the great work of the rescue services and the thousands of migrants who, wishing to flee war conflicts, “They throw themselves into the sea with empty pockets of belongings but full of hope, with the dream that the sea will allow them to start a new life.”

Before the intervention of the bishop of the diocese of Tuy-Vigo, in charge of replying to Álvarez, the president of Monte Real ended his intervention by citing Ernest Hemingway to ensure that “no one, ever, is alone at sea” .

The seventy-seventh edition of the offering of the sea in the votive temple of Panxón ended, as has been the tradition, with the blessing of the sea and the singing of the Salve Marinera.

The Saint Maxime de Miguel Lago, the first boat to cross the finish line of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race

· The Monte Real Club de Yates boat was the fastest to complete the 865 miles of the first stage of the competition between Baiona and Angra do Heroismo

· The crew, skippered by Miguel Lago from Vigo, sailed at an average speed of 7.2 knots and spent 5 days, 13 hours and 43 minutes on their journey

· José Carlos Prista’s Xekmatt fought until the end to overtake Saint Maxime but finally crossed the finish line second some five hours later

The Saint Maxime of the Monte Real Yacht Club was the first boat to cross the finish line of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race this morning, the ocean regatta that is being held these days in the Atlantic organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Angra Iate Clube. The Galician crew was the fastest to complete the 865 miles of the first stage of the competition, which last Sunday set sail from the fishing village of Baiona towards the Azorean town of Angra do Heroismo.

According to the tracking system installed on board the ship, the Saint Maxime sailed at an average speed of 7.2 knots, reaching maximum speeds of 11.6 at times, and took 5 days, 13 hours and 43 minutes to complete the journey. This morning, at 2:43 Spanish time, he was the first to cross the finish line located on Isla Terceira and became the real-time winner of the first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race.

At the wheel of the ship, a 50-foot carbon Shipman designed by J&J Desing and assembled by José Miguel Roquette, was one of the great names of sailing in Galicia, Miguel Lago from Vigo. Winner of the 1st Discovery Route in 1984, the Tour of Europe and the Fasnet Race in 1993, three editions of the Sardinia Cup and as many Copas del Rey, this experienced trimmer now adds a new triumph to his extensive resume of nautical victories.

Along with him, completing the crew, three of his usual racing companions, Juan José Lago, Gerardo Alonso and Javier Lago, and two other outstanding sailors, Daniel Méndez and Guillermo Caamaño. A team of six that knew how to complement each other perfectly to place Saint Maxime at the head of the regatta at all times and cross the finish line in first position.

José Carlos Prista’s Xekmatt, from the Lisbon Naval Association was, without a doubt, another of the important boats in this first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race. This Portuguese team of family and friends, with more than ten years of experience in regattas and numerous victories in trophies such as the Prince of Asturias, the Atlantic Cup of Azores and several cruise championships in Portugal, sailed during the first days following practically the same course than the Saint Maxime, but in the final stretch they separated and had less luck than the Galicians. They crossed the finish line second about five hours after the first.

The rest of the fleet sailed somewhat further away from the first and quite grouped together. The Atlantis of the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas, skippered by Iván Prieto, and with free software technology on board, led this group most of the time, sailing at an average speed of 5.9 knots and reaching 10 at times. Along with him, the Free Spirit of Yann Lascan, of the Real Club Marítimo de Abra; and Cleopatra by José Rafael Ribero, from the Recreational Nautical Association. Somewhat more detached was the crew of the smallest boat in the fleet, the Brumario, from the Ribeira Yacht Club, with Alejandro Pazó at the controls.

The Pakea Cadenote Uno, from the national sailing prize Unai Basurko, finally decided to abandon the first stage of the competition. After having suffered several technical problems that forced them to return to the peninsula and having to resume the regatta later, the crew decided to withdraw and start the engine to reach Angra do Heroismo on time and be able to complete the second stage, back to Baiona.

The Pakea thus joined the Moflete and the Txole, withdrawn from the test a few hours after starting due to various problems with the boat. The tenth boat entered in the regatta, Henril Olsson’s Dulcamara, did not set sail due to engine problems.

The awards ceremony for the first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race will be held next Wednesday at the Angra Iate Clube, and just one day later, on Thursday 14, the second stage will begin, between the Azores and Baiona.

Very punctually, at one in the afternoon, nine boats set out for Angra do Heroismo, on the Terceira Island of the Azorean archipelago, where the first ones are expected to begin arriving within five days. Although at the time of the start the wind blew with very little intensity and did not allow a quick and lucid advance towards the uncheck mark, once the Carallones mark was passed, the wind increased in intensity and the regatta gained momentum.

It was then that the two groups that differed from the first moment began to consolidate. In the lead, standing out from the rest, the Saint Maxime, a 50-foot carbon very agile in navigation even with light winds, skippered by Miguel Lago. Very close to it, another ship from Monte Real, the Txole de Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, 47 feet. And without detaching himself from them, José Carlos Prista’s Xekmatt, from the Lisbon Naval Association, also navigates, accustomed to the waters of the Atlantic after having completed several regattas from Lisbon to Azores.

The Pakea of the national sailing prize Unai Basurko and the Cleopatra led by José Rafael Ribeiro are also sailing these first few miles at a very good pace, with about 9 knots on average. A little further back are Iván Prieto’s Atlantis, Yann Lascan’s Free Spirit, and Alejandro Pazó’s Brumario. And closing ranks, Antonio Díaz’s Moflete.

Henril Olsson’s Dulcamara, which was going to race for the Monte Real Club de Yates, could not finally go out to sea due to an engine problem, which gave failure hours before departure and prevented the boat from complying with the safety requirements required by the race committee.

Therefore, nine boats are competing, starting today, for victory in the first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, which will increase in excitement as the boats get closer to the Azores. If the forecasts are met, it is more than likely that the wind, which will be favorable at the beginning, will begin to drop in the last 100 miles, which will force the crews to make the most of all their navigation techniques and tactics.

The evolution of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race can be followed minute by minute on the internet on the page http://www.localizatodo.com/regata/?id=141, where the data for each boat (sail , model, manufacturer, dimensions, rating, etc.), the names of the skipper and the owner, the longitude and latitude at which they are located and the speed and course at which they are sailing.

In addition to this system for monitoring the fleet via the Internet, a control center operates 24 hours a day at the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club from which to monitor the boats and establish contact with the crews. The boats will receive calls from the organization every eight hours to check their situation and navigation conditions.

This center is part of the security protocol implemented by the Monte Real Yacht Club, a strict system that includes equipping the boats with two satellite telephones and a location device. All measures to maintain an exhaustive control of the fleet that, according to the president of the regatta committee, Fernando Giraldo, allows the crews to cross the Atlantic more calmly.

The first stage of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race will end on July 13 in Angra do Heroismo with the award ceremony for the winners. A day later the second stage will start, back to Baiona.

· The crews will face the first 300 miles of the route sailing through, pushed by a wind of about 20 knots on average

The 10 crews registered in the competition must cross the starting line and go around a marker mark before starting the navigation of the 865-mile route of the first stage of the race, until the end located in the Azorean town of Angra do Heroismo .

The weather report has allied itself with the regatta and announces favorable conditions for the first days of competition. The departure will take place with good seas and winds from the north, between 8 and 12 knots, which will increase in intensity as the crews move away from the estuary, until reaching an average of 20 knots, which they will have on average in the first 300 miles travel.

Tomorrow, Sunday, will also be a very good day for the public who want to follow the start of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race from the surroundings of the bay, since the sun will shine and the temperature will be around 25 degrees.

Ten luxury crews from different parts of Spain and Portugal

Ten crews from different parts of Spain and Portugal will participate in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, a fleet that, according to the president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez, “brings together many very good sailors from the current nautical scene”. At the presentation of the regatta, held this morning at the club’s facilities in Baiona, Álvarez assured that he was very satisfied with the great reception that this first edition of a competition has had that he hopes – he said – can be repeated every two years. “It is obvious , he stated, that it is a complicated test, which is not within the reach of any ship or crew. It requires good boats with great skippers and sailors on board, and in this sense I think the list of entries is very significant due to the quality of the participants”, assured José Luis Álvarez.

Among the crews that will fight for the victory of Baiona Angra is the one led by the national sailing prize and one of the most outstanding sailors in world ocean sailing, Unai Basurko, the only Spaniard to stand on the podium of a solo round-the-world trip with two scales. The Basque sailor will compete aboard the Pakea, a 50-foot Bavaria from Náutica Cadenote.

The 50-footer is also the Saint Maxime that will be skippered by Miguel Lago, one of the great names in nautical sailing in Galicia. The man from Vigo returns in 2016 to embark on a long-distance regatta across the Atlantic, an ocean that he has already crossed on several occasions with the Discovery Route. Winner of several world championships and the Fastnet Race, Lago will sail wearing a pendant from the Monte Real Club de Yates, as will Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui aboard the Txole.

Representing the Real Club Marítimo de Abra – Real Sporting Club will race the Free Spirit, with Pablo Toja at the helm; and Tucho Díaz will be in charge of leading the crew of the Moflete, from the Club Náutico de Beluso. The team of José Carlos Prista aboard the Xekmatt and José Rafael Ribeiro aboard the Cleopatra, are two of the Portuguese representatives of the fleet and will try to place the Portuguese flag on top of the Baiona Angra podium.

The Brumario of Alejandro Pazó, the Atlantis of the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas skippered by Iván Prieto, and the Dulcamara with Ángel López at the controls are other boats that will fight for the victory of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race.

Antonio Maestre from Murcia wins the Iberian Paralympic Sailing Championship in Baiona

· The athlete from the Real Club de Regatas de Cartagena won the victory after winning the Vitaldent Adapted Sailing Regatta organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and held this weekend in Baiona

· The Andalusian Nacho Zalvide of the Real Club Marítimo de Punta Umbría and the Galician Fran Piñeiro of the Escota Sailing Club won silver and bronze in a competition included in the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit

· The next sporting event of the Monte Real Yacht Club is one of the great nautical events of the year, the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, which will start from the Galician fishing village next Sunday, July 3

Aboard the Samba Pati and with results that could hardly be improved, Antonio Maestre from Cartagena won the 2.4mR Class Iberian Championship this afternoon in Baiona, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club by delegation of the Royal Spanish Federation of Candle.

The Paralympic athlete from the Royal Club de Regatas de Cartagena arrived in Galicia ready to improve the bronze he achieved last March in the national class, and he did it with might. He signed four first places and one second in the total of six races held throughout the weekend in the Vitaldent Adapted Sailing Regatta, included in the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit.

It was, he says, “a very technical competition, with a regatta course that is somewhat complicated by the currents, which you have to know how to understand very well to get good results”. But despite these currents, and despite breaking the boom strut, Maestre finally won the competition at a club where, he says, he feels at home. “Coming to Baiona is always a pleasure, because of how beautiful all this is and because of how well we are treated at Monte Real. When sailors ask us where we want to go sailing, Baiona is a place that always comes out, because it is a place where we feel very comfortable”.

The Andalusian sailor and coach Nacho Zalvide, from the Real Club Marítimo y de Tenis de Punta Umbría, stayed three points away from victory. The one from Huelva reached the final day as the provisional leader after the first tests, but he could not keep up with Maestre and ended up falling from the top of the podium to the second drawer.

The gold went, therefore, to Murcia, the silver to Andalusia, and the bronze went to Galicia, in the hands of the sailor from the Club de Vela Escota de Vigo, Fran Piñeiro. The Galician made it clear on Saturday, with a fourth place, that he wanted a place on the podium of the competition, and this Sunday he finally got it.

Already on the ground, Piñeiro was very satisfied with the results and, above all, with the evolution he is achieving in the season. He himself admits that he started out a little slow, but that little by little he is picking up the pace. He also says that this is influenced by the fact that, for some time now, he enjoys sailing much more because, as he assures, once he has qualified for the Rio Olympics, there is once again a great atmosphere among the sailors.

The Iberian Championship of the 2.4mR Class – Vitaldent Adapted Sailing Regatta, included in the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit, ended with the award ceremony for the winners, in which the mayor and the Baiona accessibility councilor, Ángel Rodal and Policarpo Vilar; Iberdrola’s delegate in Galicia, Francisco Silva; Repsol’s Marine and Fisheries Manager, Inés González Megido; and the president and vice president of the Monte Real Yacht Club, José Luis Álvarez and Alejandro Retolaza.

The next competition of the Monte Real Club de Yates is one of the great events on the nautical scene this year, the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, an ocean regatta that will depart next Sunday, July 3, from the Galician fishing village towards Angra do Heroísmo, in the Portuguese archipelago of Azores.

· The sailor and coach of the Royal Maritime and Tennis Club of Punta Umbría leads the championship after the first tests held today in the bay of Baiona

· His clubmate Borja Melgarejo from Seville occupies second place on the provisional podium and Rafa Andarias from Alicante is third

· The Iberian 2.4mR Championship organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club ends tomorrow, Sunday, with the last tests and the award ceremony

Baiona, June 25, 2016.- The sailor and technician of the Royal Maritime and Tennis Club of Punta Umbría, Nacho Zalvide from Huelva, was today the leader of the Iberian Championship of the 2.4mR Class that is held in Baiona under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Vitaldent. The man from Huelva managed to climb to the first position of the provisional podium after achieving two first places and one second in the three races held in the bay of Baiona.

The competition, which is part of the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit, experienced a first regatta day with unbeatable conditions. Punctuality in the departure time and in the execution of the tests, sun and heat in the environment, and a good north wind that started blowing with about 12 knots and increased in intensity until reaching 16. The regatta committee launched three tests, each lasting about 40 minutes, in which the sailors had to complete a route set by buoys of just over two miles.

It was, according to Zalvide, “a very fun regatta, with a very gusty wind, very playful and very tactical”, which allowed them to “Enjoy sailing and continue preparing for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics”, in which Arturo Montes, who is trained by Zalvide, will represent Spain in the 2.4mR Class. “We continue to train very hard and we are taking advantage of these regattas to test some changes we have made to the boat, with the aim of making everything perfect for the event”, assures the Huelva native.

Montes did not do too well today in the water and had to settle for sixth position, but his teammate on the Olympic team, Borja Melgarejo from Seville, won provisional silver in the championship.

Waiting for what happens tomorrow in the water, with the last three tests of the competition, the bronze is held by Rafa Andarias from Alicante, from the Club Náutico de Jávea, third overall just one point behind Melgarejo.

And in fourth position appears the first Galician representative, Fran Piñeiro, from the Club de Vela Escota. The rider from Vigo had a very good first round, in which he finished third, but was unable to maintain that result in the second and third races.

The Iberian Championship of the 2.4mR Class, which the Monte Real Yacht Club organizes by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation with the sponsorship of Vitaldent, and which is part of the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit ends tomorrow, Sunday with the last regattas points, starting at noon, and the award ceremony for the winners, at five in the afternoon in Baiona.
