Unai Basurko joins the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race

· The Basque sailor, national sailing award winner and one of the most outstanding ocean sailing sailors, will carry out the regatta aboard a 50-foot sailboat

· Basurko is, to date, the only Spanish sailor who has managed to get on the podium of a solo round-the-world trip with two stops

· The Baiona Angra Atlantic Race will depart on July 3 from the Galician town of Baiona heading to Angra do Heroismo, in the Portuguese archipelago of Azores

One of the most outstanding Spanish ocean sailing sailors, the Basque Unai Basurko, has just confirmed his participation in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, the regatta that will start on July 3rd from Baiona to Angra do Heroismo, in the archipelago of the Azores.

The 43-year-old sailor from Biscay, with more than 500 regattas and 150,000 nautical miles traveled, is still, to this day, the only Spaniard who has managed to get on the podium of a solo round-the-world trip with two stopovers, a milestone he achieved in 2007 in the 5 Oceans Regatta. In 2008 he also participated in the transoceanic Vendeé Globe, a non-stop solo round-the-world trip; and the Transat Jacques Vabre is another of the great regattas that swell the list of his long sports record.

Ready to add a new great regatta to his sailing resume, Basurko has just signed up to compete in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race. It will do so aboard a 50-foot Bavaria, from Náutica Cadenote, and with a crew made up of students and enthusiasts, in which it is still possible to embark. He does so because, he says, he wants to “allow them to fulfill their dream of ocean sailing and give them the opportunity to enjoy overcoming difficulties, sailing at night, studying tactics related to meteorology and seamanship and, of course, enjoying of the ocean.”

With 53 days to go before the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race begins, Basurko and his team have already started training, sailing monthly between Getxo and Sada to improve all possible aspects of deep-sea sailing. “We must prepare very well – says Unai-, it is It is important to arrive in good physical condition for the race and leave the problems on the ground to be able to enjoy the competition to the fullest”.

A competition that he will face, he assures, always bearing in mind a series of environmental issues that, for years, he has promoted in his sailing expeditions to places such as Greenland, Newfoundland or Antarctica. “Whoever sees the sea only as a circuit in which to compete, has not understood anything about navigation. On board we will always promote behaviors that are respectful of the marine environment and its inhabitants. The crew will have books on board, to identify birds, mammals, fish…”

It was this need for environmental awareness that led Unai Basurko to create Pakea Bizkaia, a school with which she intends to achieve, through the notoriety of her exploits, greater social recognition for the sport of sailing, as well as to educate and raise awareness among young and not so young in respect for the environment.

And it will be the flag of peace (pakea means peace in Basque) and that philosophy is what marks the navigation of the Portuguese in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race aboard the Pakea Cadenote. “Our main goal ,” he says, It will be learning and enjoyment, but it is clear that we will also try to do almost everything a little better than our competitors”.

The ocean regatta, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Angra Iate Clube, will depart on July 3 from the fishing village of Baiona towards Angra do Heroismo, a town of some 35,000 inhabitants located on the Terceira Island of the Portuguese archipelago. from Azores. It will be there where the awards ceremony for the first stage will be held, just before the start of the second stage back to Galicia, on July 14. The competition will end on the 23rd at the Monte Real Club de Yates facilities with the final awards ceremony.

Basurko will thus step once again on the facilities of the Baiona club, where years ago he collected his National Sailing Award, and where he always likes to return. “Being very very small -remember- , I heard my father say that in Galicia they sailed with the spinaker among dolphins, while the moon lit up some islands, to end up mooring in a beautiful club. I was 7 or 8 years old and I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to get to know that club. Since then I feel at home in Monte Real. Organizing this fantastic regatta is just one more reason to return to Baiona”.

UNAI BASURKO JUNTA-SE À REGATA BAIONA ANGRA ATLANTIC RACE

· The Basque sailor, national sailing winner and one of the two most outstanding ocean sailing sailors, will regatta aboard a 50-foot boat

· Basurko is, in his days, the only Spanish sailor who managed to get on the podium of a solo world tour with two stops

· A Baiona Angra Atlantic Race will depart on the 3rd of July from the Galician town of Baiona towards Angra do Heroísmo, in the Açores archipelago

Two of the most outstanding Spanish sailors in ocean sailing, or Basco Unai Basurko, have just confirmed their participation in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, a regatta that will depart on July 3 from Baiona heading to Angra do Heroísmo, in the Açores archipelago.

The 43-year-old Biscayan sailor, with more than 500 regattas and 150,000 nautical miles covered, continues to be, over the past few days, the only Spaniard who managed to climb the podium of a world tour alone with two stops, a mark not reached year of 2007 in the 5 Oceans Regatta. In 2008 he also participated in the transoceanic Vendée Globe, a solo round-the-world trip with no stopovers, and the Transat Jacques Vabre and other two great regattas that make up the list of his vast sports record.

53 days after the start of the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race, Basurko and his crew are starting to train, carrying out mensais sailings between Getxo and Sada to improve all the aspects that may arise in the navigation during the regatta. “We must prepare ourselves muito bem – disse Unai – é It is important to try to improve your physical conditions and leave your problems on the ground in order to fully enjoy the competition”.

A competition that he will face, he assures me, I always keep in mind a series of environmental questions that, for some years, have driven his sailing expeditions to places like Greenland, Terra Nova or Antarctica. “I see the sea just like a circuit where it is possible to compete, I don’t understand anything about navigation. On board we will always promote respectful conduct of the sea and its two inhabitants. The crew will have books on board, to identify birds, mammals, fish…”

It is this need for environmental awareness that Unai Basurko led to raise Pakea Bizkaia, a school with which he intends to achieve, through the notoriety of his two feitos, a greater social recognition for the sport of sailing, as well as how to educate and raise awareness among young people and children only for the respect that we should have the environment.

E will be a peace flag (pakea means peace in Basque) and this philosophy will mark your navigation in the Baiona Angra Atlantic Race aboard the Pakea Cadenote. “Or our main objective – disse – It will be learning and joy of travel, but it is also certain that we will try to do everything a little better than our adversaries”.

The ocean regatta, organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Angra Iate Club, will depart on July 3 from the coastal town of Baiona heading to Angra do Heroísmo, a town with about 35,000 inhabitants located on the Terceira island of the Açores archipelago. . It will be there where the awards ceremony for the first stage will be held, even before the start of the second stage back to Galiza, on July 14. The competition will end on the 23rd at the Monte Real Yacht Club installations with the final award ceremony.

Basurko will also set foot, once again, in the installations of the Baiona club, where he won his National Sailing Award a few years ago, and where he always likes to return. “When I was very, very small –he remembers- Escutava o meu pai recount that in Galiza you sailed like a spinaker between golfinhos, as for lua iluminava umas ilhas, to end up docked in a precious club. He was 7 or 8 years old and we didn’t want to miss the opportunity to join this club. Since then I feel like at home in Monte Real. The organization of this fantastic regatta is just one more reason to return to Baiona”.

El Pairo 8, champion of the Repsol Trophy

· The boat of the Real Club Náutico de Vigo skippered by Luis Bugallo won the trophy organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates this Sunday

· Aceites Abril from the nautical company from Vigo, Bosch Service Solutions from Canido and Margem do Azul from Baiona won in classes ORC 1, 2-3 and 4

· In the J80 one-design competition, victory went to Miguel Lago’s Virazón and Eva María Moreno’s Serralleiras won the Figaro class

The Pairo 8, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, is the new champion of the Repsol Trophy after winning this Sunday the thirty-ninth edition of the traditional spring regatta organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates.

With Luis Bugallo leading the team, the Pairo crew completed two great races in the two days of competition held this weekend in the Vigo and Pontevedra estuaries. If in the first stage those from Vigo were left with honey on their lips by achieving third place in their class, in the second they came out to sentence and managed to take the victory.

They ousted their clubmates from Aceites Abril, who had been leaders of the competition, from the podium of the general classification, and who finally failed to take home the great trophy but did take a well-deserved first place in the ORC 1 class. The boat owned by Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal came first in the classification of the big boats, followed by the Pairo and the Fifty by Storax Innovation of the Monte Real Club de Yates, skippered by Rui Ramada.

In the general ORC 2-3, Bosch Service Solutions won the gold. Those from the Club Marítimo de Canido, led by Ramón Ojea, were on the verge of winning in the first coastal one between Baiona and Sanxenso, and in the second, back to Baiona, they did not miss the opportunity to emerge victorious. They left the silver and bronze of the championship to Fend la Bise by Jean Claude Sarrade, from the Monte Real Club de Yates; and Unus from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, led by Luis Manuel García.

The Portuguese accent of the Repsol Trophy podiums was put by Frederico Lopes’ Margem do Azul III who, wearing a Monte Real pendant, signed two victories in the two races held and won the overall ORC 4. El Fetch by Jorge Lago, from the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas; and Don Pansa from SC Guimaraes, with Alberto Manuel de Sousa at the helm, were second and third respectively.

In the J80 one-design competition they signed the gold, silver and bronze, the Virazón by Miguel Lago, the Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero and the Namasté by Luis de Mira. And in the Figaro class, the winners were Eva María Moreno’s Serralleiras, Juan de Arana’s Silleiro, and Santiago Meygide’s Erizana, gold, silver and bronze respectively.

This last edition of the Repsol Trophy of the Monte Real Club de Yates was, without a doubt, a very attractive competition for the crews, who were able to demonstrate their worth in different forms of navigation. The coastal routes from Baiona to Sanxenxo and from Sanxenxo to Baiona in the first and second stages were very similar, but the way of approaching them was very different, since the first day was upwind and the second almost entirely downwind.

The awards ceremony for the winners, which marked the end of the trophy, was held at the club’s facilities in Baiona, in a ceremony attended by Repsol’s Head of Marine and Fisheries, Inés González, on behalf of the event’s sponsor. Also present were the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal; the sports councilor of the Valmiñorana capital, María Jesús Martíns, and several directors of Monte Real.

The next appointment with the regattas of the Monte Real Club de Yates will be on May 21 and 22 with the Baitra Children’s Sailing Championship, in which athletes from the Optimist class of the main Galician yacht clubs will compete.

El Miudo wins the J80 Class Winter League in Baiona

· The Portuguese boat skippered by Francisca Barros won the last three rounds of the championship this Sunday and won gold in the competition

· Virazón, which remained the leader for much of the league, was finally in second position, leaving the bronze for Luna Nueva

· The next appointment with the regattas of the Monte Real Club de Yates will be on April 9 and 16 with the celebration of the AXA Trophy – Winter Cruise Regatta

Baiona, March 13, 2016.- The Portuguese yacht Miudo won this Sunday the J80 Class Winter League, held since last January in Baiona under the organization of the Monte Real Yacht Club.

Skippered by Francisca Barros, Joao Cuinha, Rita Rocha, Afonso Leite and Nuno Bajanca, they demonstrated their good work this morning in the bay by winning the three races held. They did so convincingly, favored by their great ability to sail very fast in low wind conditions. Because if there was something this Sunday in Baiona, it was a very light wind, barely five knots.

Despite the difficult conditions, the regatta committee was able to start three tests planned in the competition program. Three windward-leeward layouts were made, which the boats covered in approximately half an hour.

The Miudo made full, prevailed in all three, and secured the victory of the championship. With the second test, a new discard also came into play, which allowed them to move even further away from Virazón, who finally came second.

After a great competition, in which it remained the leader for several days, the boat skippered by Miguel Lago could not win, but it did achieve a creditable second position.

The podium of the J80 Class Winter League is closed by Juan Luis Tuero’s Luna Nueva, who signed two second places in the regattas held today, and won the championship bronze.

Completing the classification are the Alumisel by Willy Caamaño, the Ferralemes by Enrique Porto, the Pazo de Cea by Rita Hernández, the Namasté by Luis de Mira and the Escuela Náutico Cormorán by Iván Pérez Gándaras.

Once the tests of the fifth and last day of the J80 Class Winter League were finished, the Baionese club hosted the awards ceremony for the winners and a subsequent meal attended by the participants.

The next appointment in the regatta calendar of the Monte Real Club de Yates arrives in April with the AXA Trophy – Winter Cruise Regatta, which will be held on two consecutive Saturdays, on the 9th and 16th. It will include, as has been the tradition, a coastal regatta between Vigo and Baiona, on the first day, and several windward-leeward races on the second. In the next few days the registration period will open.

Virazón and Miudo fight for victory in the J80 Winter League

· The crew of Miguel Lago’s Virazón remains the leader of the general standings, separated by just one point from the Miudo of the Portuguese Francisca Barros

· The Portuguese boat won this afternoon in Baiona the victory of the fourth day after achieving two first places in the three races disputed

· The J80 Class Winter League of the Monte Real Yacht Club ends tomorrow, Sunday, with the fifth and last day starting at 11 in the morning

Baiona, March 12, 2016.- The very exciting penultimate day of the J80 Class Winter League of the Monte Real Club de Yates held this Saturday in Baiona leaves the top positions of the classification very tight while waiting for what happens tomorrow, Sunday, in the final stage of the trophy.

The Portuguese crew of the Miudo, skippered by Francisca Barros, achieved an important victory this afternoon in Baiona that places them just one point behind Miguel Lago’s Virazón, who remains the leader of the general classification.

Tomorrow’s session will therefore be decisive for the configuration of the championship podium. Not only because of the short distance that separates the first classified, but also because a new discard could come into play, with the consequent dance of numbers in the general classification.

If the weather conditions allow it, the last tests of the Winter League will be played this Sunday from eleven in the morning. There will be three new windward-leeward routes, identical to those of this afternoon’s session, which started a little later than expected due to the wind, which failed to catch on. Several failed starts and many strategic moves on the water reflected the interest of finally with a northwesterly wind of about ten knots on average.

The Portuguese Miudo, with two first places and one third, achieved victory, leaving Luna Nueva of Juan Luis Tuero and Virazón of Miguel Lago in second and third place. Despite their good results, the Portuguese were not the ones to unseat Virazón from the head of the general standings and placed second just one point behind.

Eleven points behind appears the third classified, Willy Caamaño’s Alumisel, with the provisional bronze of the trophy. The classification is completed by the Luna Nueva of Juan Luis Tuero, the Ferralemes of Enrique Porto, the Pazo de Cea of Rita Hernández, with Jaime García at the helm, the Namasté of Luis de Mira, skippered today by Javier Torroja, and the Náutico Cormorán of Ivan Perez Gandaras.

The J80 Class Winter League ends tomorrow, Sunday, with three new tests in the bay of Baiona starting at eleven in the morning and the awards ceremony at the Monte Real Club de Yates facilities.
