The Monte Real brings together the elite of Spanish Paralympic sailing in Baiona

· This weekend the Iberian Championship of the 2.4mR Class – Vitaldent Adapted Sailing Regatta, of the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit is celebrated

· Among the participants will be the Sevillian sailor Arturo Montes, the Spanish representative at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro

· The five-time champion of Spain Rafa Andarias and also a member of the 2016 Olympic team Borja Melgarejo will be other competitors

The Monte Real Club de Yates brings together this weekend in Baiona the elite of Spanish Paralympic sailing in the Iberian Championship of the 2.4mR Class – Vitaldent Adapted Sailing Regatta, a competition included in the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit.

Among the participants will be Arturo Montes, Spanish representative at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Paralympic Games. The Sevillian athlete, who lost a leg in an accident after being run over by a boat while swimming, is currently one of the most outstanding sailors on the peninsular nautical scene.

Montes, from the Real Club Marítimo y de Tenis de Punta Umbría, arrives in Baiona occupying second place in the IV Iberdrola Circuit behind Rafa Andarias, another of the greats of the 2.4mR Class in Spain. With a physical disability that affects his lower limbs, the man from Alicante, from the Jávea Yacht Club, can boast of having achieved five Spanish championships at the age of 26. Last May, he also finished ninth in the World Championship held in Holland.

Another of the outstanding athletes who will compete in the Vitaldent Adapted Sailing Regatta of Monte Real is the Murcian Antonio Maestre, from the Royal Regatta Club of Cartagena, who sails with a paralysis in his left arm. Andalusian Borja Melgarejo, teammate of Arturo Montes at the Real Club Marítimo y de Tenis de Punta Umbría and on the Rio 2016 Olympic team, will also be in Baiona this weekend.

The Iberian Championship of the 2.4mR Class that the Monte Real Club de Yates organizes by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and with the collaboration of the Galician and Portuguese Sailing Federations begins this Friday with a series of training regattas in which the athletes, coming from different parts of Spain and Portugal, will be able to take a first contact with the waters of the Bay of Baiona.

In the Atlantic, unlike the Mediterranean, the waves and the tides take on a very special role and are often decisive for the execution of the tests. Hence the importance of the training day that takes place prior to the start of the championship, so that the sailors can get used to the regatta field.

After today’s initial regattas, a skippers’ meeting and a fellowship dinner, the competition itself will begin tomorrow, Saturday at noon, with the first scoring races, and will end on Sunday with the final tests and the award ceremony, which will be held at five in the afternoon at the facilities of the Baionese club.

In the Iberian Championship that takes place this weekend, the participants sail in an individual boat of 4.20 meters in length, in which the sailor sits, leaving his head a few centimeters from the water. The 2.4mR class is a Paralympic modality since the Olympic Games held in 2000 in Sydney.

· The club from Baiona organizes, by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and with the sponsorship of Vitaldent, one of the most important adapted sailing competitions on the peninsula

· The championship, included in the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit, will begin next Friday with a training regatta and will continue this weekend with the scoring events

· Among the participants will be the representative of Spain in the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in the 2.4mR class, Arturo Montes, the five-time national champion of the class, Rafa Andarias, and the Galicians Fran Piñeiro and José Manuel Otero

Baiona, June 21, 2016.- The Monte Real Club de Yates organizes this weekend, by delegation of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation and with the sponsorship of Vitaldent, the Iberian Championship of the 2.4mR class, included in the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit. It is the fourth year in a row that the club from Baiona is involved in one of the key events on the sailing scene, which is attended by numerous sailors from different parts of Spain and Portugal.

The fishing village of Baiona will be the scene of three days of regattas, a first of training, on Friday the 24th, and two more of competition during the weekend. Some 15 boats will take to the water, fighting for victory in several windward-leeward routes marked with buoys inside the bay.

A maximum of six races will be held, to which the regatta committee will start, both on Saturday and Sunday, at twelve noon. The weather forecasts announce sun and good wind, conditions that will allow both participants and the public to enjoy the competition.

This Vitaldent Adapted Sailing Regatta, in which the champion of the 2.4mR class will be decided, is also the second stage of the IV Iberdrola Paralympic Sailing Circuit, which began last April in Murcia, and in July and October will continue in Bizkaia and Malaga.

The circuit reaches Baiona with Rafa Andarias in the lead. The athlete from the Club Náutico de Jávea managed to reach the top of the provisional podium after the first tests held last April in Murcia, and will try not to go down the steps in the regattas this weekend. Andarias will haggle in waters that last year, despite being somewhat complicated to navigate, gave him great satisfaction and his fifth title as national champion in the 2.4mR class.

Along with Andarias this weekend will also be in Baiona, among others, Huelva sailor Arturo Montes, from the Punta Umbría Maritime Club, who will represent Spain at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, and who is second in the general classification of the circuit Iberdrola. Another of the outstanding names on the circuit is Borja Melgarejo, from Club de Mar Puerto Sherry, who last year was left wanting to win the national championship in Baiona, having to settle for silver in the competition.

Sailing at home and representing Galicia in this Iberian Championship of the 2.4mR Class will be Fran Piñeiro and José Manuel Otero, from the Club Deportivo Vela Escota de Vigo; and from the neighboring country will arrive the Portuguese Manuel Soares and Fernándo Pintos, from the Sport Club do Porto, who also participated in the Spanish Championship of the class held last March in Valencia.

The competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Vitaldent and the collaboration of the Galician Sailing Federation and the Portuguese Sailing Federation, will end on Sunday 26 at five in the afternoon with the distribution of prizes to the winners, a delivery that will be made in the facilities of the Baionese club.

Jean Claude Sarrade in Solitaires and Juan José and Hugo Martínez in A Dos, new Galician cruise champions

· Wearing a necklace from the Monte Real Club de Yates aboard the Fend la Bise, Jean Claude Sarrade was the winner of the championship in the solitaire category

· In the A Dos category, victory was won by La Burla Negra of the Club Náutico de Vigo, manned by Juan José and Hugo Martínez, also winners of the general

· The Galician Championship was organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club with the collaboration of the Baiona City Council and the Galician Sailing Federation

Baiona, June 19, 2016.- The Monte Real Club de Yates crowned the new Galician cruise champions this Sunday after the celebration, in the waters of the Rías Baixas, of the Galician Solitaire and Two-handed Championship, which was also the II Rafael Olmedo Memorial in honor of the historic president of the nautical baionés deceased last year.

The winner in the solo category was Jean Claude Sarrade, who completed the regatta of more than 52 miles, without any help on board, in just 8 hours and 23 minutes. Proof of his good work at the helm of the Fend la Bise del Monte Real Club de Yates was that he managed to beat many boats in the A Two category in the general classification, in which he finished eighth.

Seven places higher in that general ranking was La Burla Negra, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, who won the ciborium of the II Rafael Olmedo Memorial. Juan José and Hugo Martínez, skipper and crew member of the boat, collected the award from Rafa Olmedo, son of the former president of Monte Real for more than 40 years. In addition to that victory, the sailors from Vigo won in A Two -1 and also became the new Galician champions in the A Two category.

In real time, the leader of the test was, without any doubt, the U47 of José María Peinó and José María Pérez. The boat from the Real Club Náutico de Portosín led the regatta at all times, from the start in the bay of Baiona to the passage through the Ter in the Arousa estuary or the finish in front of the Islote dos Viños, in the Cíes archipelago. Peinó and Pérez set a record in the history of the competition by completing it in just 7 hours and 12 minutes.

Outstanding performance also by Luna Nueva of Juan Luis Tuero and Rogelio Torres, who once again demonstrated how good they are at coastal regattas. Wearing a Monte Real pendant, they won in the A Two – 1 category, and their clubmates, Enrique and Javier Porto, prevailed in the J80 class aboard the Ferralemes.

The Galician Solitaire and Two-Handed Championship – II Rafael Olmedo Memorial was held this weekend in the Rías Baixas with unbeatable weather conditions. Sun in the sky, good sea, and north-northwest winds of between 12 and 14 knots, which increased in intensity to 16 and reached, at times, peaks of 25. The fleet completed 30 miles upwind ascent to the Ter and 22 very fast descent with a spinnaker to the Islote dos Viños.

Once the competition was over, the Monte Real Club de Yates hosted this Sunday the awards ceremony for the winners, in which the president of the Galician Sailing Federation, Manuel Villaverde, participated; the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal; the councilor for sports of Baiona, María Jesús Martíns; and the president and vice president of the organizing club, José Luis Álvarez and Alejandro Retolaza. In addition to the Galician champion plaques and the trophies of the rest of the winners, the winners received a Terras Gauda Magnum courtesy of Bodegas Terras Gauda.

· The contenders for the podium must complete a 60-mile regatta through the Rías Baixas with a crew made up of one or two sailors at most

· The competition can be followed live on computers, mobile phones or tablets thanks to an application that will show the position of the boats at all times

· The Galician Solitary and Two-handed Championship is organized by Monte Real with the collaboration of the Baiona City Council and the Galician Sailing Federation

· The competition is also the II Rafael Olmedo Memorial in honor of the historic president of the Baion club who died last year

The Monte Real Club de Yates is once again in charge of organizing the Galician Solitary and Two-handed Championship, one of the most exciting nautical events of the sailing season in Galicia. There are about sixty miles of route through the Rías Baixas for boats with reduced crews, made up of one or two sailors at most.

It will be tomorrow, Saturday, at eleven o’clock in the morning, when the regatta committee will start the race from the Bay of Baiona. The weather forecasts announce a day without rain, with plenty of sun and winds from the north, moderate in the morning and somewhat more intense in the afternoon. These conditions will facilitate the navigation of sailboats along a route that includes passing through the Carallones and La Negra beacons, the Cíes Islands, the Picamillo, Fajilda, Esqueiros, Ter and Camouco marks, the Ons and Onza Islands, and the Two Wines Islet.

Although there is a set time for the start and a route marked by obligatory passage points, it is difficult to determine what time the end will take place or how long the regatta will last. It is estimated that the last boats will cross the finish line at dawn on Sunday, but everything will depend on the ability of the crews and the conditions they have to face at sea.

All those who want to follow the competition live can do so on their computers, mobile phones or tablets, accessing the page www.estela.co . Through it they will be able to know the route chosen by each boat and in what position they are at each moment of the test.

Once the regatta is over, the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club will host, on Sunday at noon, the awards ceremony for the new Galician solitaire champions and two. In addition, a special award will be given to the winner of the II Rafael Olmedo Memorial, with which the Baionese club remembers its president for more than 40 years, who died last year.

In the last edition of the championship, held in June 2015, the winner, in the solo category, was the sailor from the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña, Jesús Pintos, aboard the Victoria. The podium was completed by Jean Claude Sarrade, from the Monte Real Club de Yates, who sailed in the Fend la Bise; and Alfonso Rodríguez in the Smaku, of the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas.

In the category of Two, the victory went to Mi Moneda, from the Monte Real Club de Yates, in which the former Copa América sailor, Laureano Wizner, and Alfonso Crespo competed. The second position went to the Virazón de Miguel and Juan Lago, from the Monte Real Club de Yates; and in third place was the U47 led by José María Peinó and José Manuel Pérez, from the Real Club Náutico de Portosín.

Monte Real celebrates three years bringing the sea closer to people with disabilities

The Monte Real Sailing School closed this Wednesday its third adapted sailing course for people with all kinds of disabilities

· The Regional Minister of Social Policy, José Manuel Rey Varela, highlighted the progress that initiatives such as that of the Baionese club signify for society

· The Monte Real Yacht Club thanked the Xunta de Galicia and Fundación Repsol for their support in order to continue with this type of course

The Monte Real Club de Yates held this Wednesday in Baiona the closing ceremony of the Adapted Sailing Course 2015-2016, in which some 65 students from different disabled associations in Galicia participated over the last year.

It is the third course of these characteristics that the Baiona club has taught since the creation, in 2012, of its Adapted Sailing School, through which it aims to bring people with functional diversity closer to the sea so that they can navigate under equal conditions.

In recent months, students with physical, psychosocial, cognitive and sensory disabilities from the Juan María de Nigrán Center, the Vontade de Tomiño Association and the Redondela Center for People with Disabilities attended theoretical classes with specialized monitors, went out to navigate the bay and participated in different activities related to sailing.

The final touch of the course was put this morning by the delivery of diplomas held at the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club, an act that was chaired by the Regional Minister of the Xunta de Galicia, José Manuel Rey Varela. In his speech, the head of Social Policy of the regional administration, highlighted the great work carried out by the Baionese club with people with different abilities. “A society – assured Rey Varela – is valued for how it treats people, and in this sense the Monte Real Yacht Club is an example to follow ”.

In his speech before the students of the adapted sailing course, the Regional Minister of the Xunta mentioned the recognition for his good practices received a few months ago by the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School at the Berlin International Tourism Fair. He also recalled the distinction that the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) awarded the club in 2014 for its work in the elimination of architectural barriers and care for people with disabilities.

On behalf of the Baionese club, its president, José Luis Álvarez, intervened to welcome and congratulate all the students of the course, and to thank the Xunta de Galicia for its support of the initiative, through the Department of Social Policy and the Secretary General for Sport. Vice President Alejandro Retolaza encouraged public administrations and other companies and institutions to continue supporting the Adapted Sailing School, so that it can expand its services and reach more and more people.

In his speech, Retolaza also recalled other initiatives promoted by the club to promote adapted sailing, such as the Spanish Championship of the 2.4mR Class, which will be held in Baiona on the 24th, 25th and 26th of this month. There are three days of regattas in which athletes with and without disabilities, coming from different parts of Spain, will compete on equal terms in the bay of Baiona.

He also announced the celebration, on September 10, of the second edition of the Solidarity Vertiathlon, a triathlon organized in collaboration with the Baiona city council with which they will raise funds for the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School.

The closing of the 2015-2016 Adapted Sailing Course was also attended by the General Director of Seniors and People with Disabilities of the Xunta de Galicia, Coro Piñeiro; the Councilor for Social Welfare of Baiona, Mª Carmen Paredes; the Councilor for Accessibility of Baiona; Policarpo Vilar; and Inés González Megido, on behalf of Fundación Repsol. After the delivery of the diplomas to the students, the event ended with a family photo of all the participants and authorities present.

The next adapted sailing course of the Monte Real Club de Yates will begin in September.

Galicia and Portugal join again in the IV Atlantic Cruise Circuit

· The competition is organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, Douro Marina Sailing Academy BB Douro and the Clube Naval de Cascais

· The aspiring winners must complete three top-level regattas: the Prince of Asturias Trophy, the Cascais Vela 2016 and the Mateus Rosé Sailing Cup

Next weekend the Atlantic Cruise Circuit returns, one of the largest nautical events in Portugal and northern Spain, created four years ago with the aim of strengthening, through sailing, sports, tourism and cultural relations between Galicia and Portugal.

The competition will begin with the Mateus Rosé Sailing Cup, organized once again by the Douro Marina Sailing Academy BBDouro. There will be two days of tests, on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19, in the Portuguese town of Vila Nova de Gaia.

Once this first stage is over, the ORC cruise crews will not see each other again until Cascais Vela 2016. This second appointment of the circuit, organized by the Clube Naval de Cascais, is marked on the calendar on August 26, 27 and 28.

The Prince of Asturias Trophy, of the Monte Real Club de Yates, which celebrates its thirty-first edition this year, is the last of the tests that score points for the Atlantic Cruise Circuit.

The competition will be held from September 2 to 4 in the town of Baiona, and at the end the winning crew will be awarded the silver goblet that symbolizes victory in the competition. The winning club will be in charge of guarding the trophy until the next edition, when it will be put back into play.

80 elderly and disabled people sail with the Monte Real Yacht Club thanks to the Amaromar initiative

· The general director of Seniors and Persons with Disabilities today visited the facilities of the Baiona club with the participants of this initiative framed in the Active Lecer 2016 program of the Department of Social Policy

· In this first edition of Amaromar, 80 elderly and disabled people from residences and public centers in Monforte de Lemos, Castro Caldelas, O Carballiño and Caldas de Reis participate

· The Monte Real Club de Yates collaborates once again with the Xunta de Galicia to bring the sea closer to groups of people for whom the practice of nautical activities can lead to an improvement in their quality of life

The general director of Seniors and People with Disabilities, Coro Piñeiro, visited the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club this afternoon with the participants of Amaromar , an initiative promoted by the Department of Social Policy of the Xunta de Galicia within the framework of the program Lecer Active 2016 .

It is a proposal aimed at users of publicly owned residences in the interior of Galicia that seeks to help these people maintain an adequate level of personal and social well-being, so that they can continue to be an active part of society.

80 people participate in this first edition of Amaromar . Today was the turn of the public centers for the elderly in Monforte de Lemos, Castro Caldelas and O Carballiño; and tomorrow, users of the O Saiar occupational center for people with mental disabilities, located in Caldas de Reis, will arrive in Baiona. All of them are approaching the nautical world these days through the Monte Real Yacht Club, visiting the facilities of the Baiones club and sailing through the Bay of Baiona and the vicinity of the Cíes Islands.

In a playful and recreational way, the participants in the Amaromar come into direct contact with the sea, enjoy sailing around the bay and learn from the explanations offered by specialized monitors. The program also includes a meal on board a boat and a cultural tour of the fishing village of Baiona.

The General Director of Seniors and People with Disabilities, Coro Piñeiro, was very pleased to be able to count, once again, on the collaboration of the Monte Real Yacht Club for this type of initiative. For some time now, the Baionese club has been working hand in hand with the regional administration to bring the sea closer to all those people for whom carrying out nautical activities can improve their quality of life.

It does so on an occasional basis, in programs such as the Amaromar that takes place these days, but also throughout the year, taking sailing, through its Adapted Sailing School, people with physical, mental or intellectual disabilities from different groups and associations of Galicia.

During her visit to the Monte Real Yacht Club, the general director of the Xunta de Galicia was accompanied by the president and vice president of the club, José Luis Álvarez and Alejandro Retolaza; and by the Councilor for Social Welfare and Equality of the Baiona City Council, María del Carmen Paredes.

Baiona will celebrate its second Solidarity Vertiathlon in October

· The competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Baiona City Council with the sponsorship of Verti Seguros will be held on Saturday, October 8

· Athletes participating in this sprint triathlon must complete a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometre bike ride and 5-kilometre run

· All the money raised from registrations will go to the Monte Real Adapted Sailing School for people with disabilities

After the success achieved last year with the participation of more than 200 people and more than 5,700 euros raised, Baiona once again hosts in 2016 a new edition of the Solidarity Vertiathlon, an event organized by the Monte Real Yacht Club and the Baiona City Council with the sponsorship of Verti Seguros and the collaboration of the Galician Triathlon Federation.

The competition, which will have the design of a sprint triathlon, will be held on October 8 and will include three swimming, cycling and running events. Participants must complete a 750-meter swim, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5-kilometer run. The entire circuit will take place through the bay of Baiona and the different streets of the fishing village.

The godmother of the Vertiathlon will be, one more year, the paratriathlete from Vigo Susana Rodríguez. The Galician and Spanish Paralympic duathlon champion, who two years ago received the title of Best Galician Athlete with a Disability, and who will participate in the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, was enthusiastic about once again sponsoring an event for solidarity purposes , to which a large number of firms have also joined.

Foxy, Coca Cola, Coedent, Arena, Repsol, Terras Gauda, Cope, or the Xunta de Galicia through Deporte Galego, are some of the companies and institutions that have already confirmed their support for this year’s Vertiathlon, and from the organization They hope to have more collaborations.

In the first edition of the Solidarity Vertiathlon, held in September 2015, 230 people participated, whose registrations raised 5,750 euros for the Adapted Sailing School of the Monte Real Yacht Club, created in 2012 to bring the world of sailing closer to people disabled. The absolute winners in the male and female categories were Brais Misa García, from the Porriño Athletics Club; and Mar Villar Zamuz, from Trinorth Nogasa.

The young sailor Ricardo Fernández wins the Baitra Championship

· After achieving three first places in the five contested races, the sailor from the Club Marítimo de Canido won the children’s sailing trophy

· Mario Soares, also a Canido athlete, and Jorge Álvarez from the Riveira Nautical Club, won in classes B and C, and Antonio de Cominges in the School class.

· The Baitra Championship organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates ended this Sunday in Baiona with the awards ceremony for the winners

The young sailor Ricardo Fernández, just 12 years old, won the Baitra Children’s Sailing Championship this Sunday after achieving three first places in the five races held over the weekend in the Bay of Baiona. The athlete from the Club Marítimo de Canido did a double by winning the overall trophy and also getting on the podium of honor of the Optimist A.

In this class, intended for sailors between the ages of 11 and 15, silver went to Paula da Rocha, Fernández’s clubmate; and the bronze for Africa Alonso, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo.

In the Optimist B class, the Club Marítimo de Canido once again demonstrated its power, and revalidated the first three positions that it had already achieved after the first day of testing. Mario Soares, Adriana Pérez Canal and Paloma Pedrosa were first, second and third respectively.

More spread out were the first positions of the Optimist C class, from 8 to 10 years old, in which Jorge Álvarez, from the Club Náutico de Riveira, prevailed. Tiago Vecino and Andrés Barreiro, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo and the Monte Real Club de Yates, won silver and bronze in the championship.

And in the Optimist School classification, that of the youngest, who start in the world of competition, Canido once again signed another plenary session occupying all the positions on the podium, led by Antonio de Cominges, Rodrigo Pérez and Jorge Troncoso.

The Baitra Children’s Sailing Championship, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales, ended this Sunday in Baiona with the second and last day of tests, which were held in better conditions than in the first stage.

The regattas started a little later than initially planned, but they developed with agility and emotion. The wind, from the northwest component, blew with good intensity during all the races and the quality of the young sailors did the rest. Quite equal between the fleet and a lot of desire to have fun competing.

The end of the championship was put with the awards ceremony for the winners, an act that was held at the Monte Real facilities, with the assistance of the manager of Baitra and sponsor of the trophy, Juan Carlos González; the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal; the president of the Galician Sailing Federation, Manuel Villaverde; and several directors of the organizing club.

· The Baitra Children’s Sailing Championship ends tomorrow, Sunday, with the last tests and the awards ceremony for the winners at the Monte Real Club de Yates

The Club Marítimo de Canido and the Real Club Náutico de Vigo were the clubs that managed to get the most sailors into the provisional places of honor of the Baitra Children’s Sailing Championship, which this afternoon held its first tests in Baiona.

Despite the fact that the sailing conditions were not very good, due to the rain and a very shifty wind, the more than fifty sailors who participated in the trophy were able to complete two regattas in the waters of the bay. They made several routes between buoys, which the regatta committee marked with a more or less long distance according to the participating classes, determined by the age of the athletes.

In class A, from 11 to 15 years old, Ricardo Fernández, from the Club Marítimo de Canido, won. The young 12-year-old sailor did a fantastic job on the water, and his first two places in the two heats contested lifted him to first position. The provisional second place is for Africa Alonso, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo; and the third for Miguel Marques, from the We Do Sailing Club, from Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal).

In class B, the Club Marítimo de Canido managed to complete the podium. His sailors Mario Soares, Adriana Pérez and Paloma Pedrosa, all 12 years old, came in first, second and third position respectively.

There was more variety in the classification of class C, of sailors aged between 8 and 10 years. The provisional gold went to the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, led by Tiago Vecino. The silver is held by Andrés Barreiro, 10 years old, from the Monte Real Club de Yates; and Jorge Álvarez, from the Club Náutico de Ribeira, was in third position.

Boys and girls from Optimist School, who are just starting out in the world of competition, also sailed on today’s regatta day. As in class B, Canido once again dominated the positions of honor in this category. Waiting for what happens in the last tests, their sailors Antonio de Cominges, Rodrigo Pérez and Jorge Troncoso occupy the first, second and third place respectively.

The Baitra Children’s Sailing Championship continues tomorrow, Sunday, with the second and last day of tests, and the subsequent awards ceremony for the winners at the Monte Real Yacht Club facilities. An act that will be attended by the manager of Baitra, Juan Carlos González, as sponsor of the event. Also present will be the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal; the president of the Galician Sailing Federation, Manuel Villaverde; and several directors of Monte Real as organizing club.

Some 60 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 15 will compete next weekend in Baiona for the Baitra Children’s Sailing Championship, a competition organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales whose main objective is to promote children’s sailing in Galicia.

The trophy will bring together young promises of sailing from different Galician clubs and from the north of Portugal. Thus, we will see in the water, among others, boats from the Royal Nautical Club of Vigo, the Rodeira Nautical Club (Cangas), the Canido Maritime Club, the Viana do Castelo Sailing Club, the BBDouro Sailing School (Vila Nova de Galia) or the Yacht Clube do Porto, as well as the organizing club itself, the Monte Real Club de Yates (Baiona).

The competition will begin on Saturday 21 with the registration of participants and a meeting of committees and coaches. Once these procedures are completed, the sailors will go out to the regatta field, located in the bay of Baiona, to begin the tests, which will be held from half past two in the afternoon.

A day later, on Sunday 22, the second and last day of regattas will take place, starting at half past eleven in the morning; and in the afternoon, around half past four, the facilities of the Monte Real Yacht Club will host the award ceremony for the winners of the championship.

Sailors from the Optimist class will participate in the Baitra Children’s Sailing Championship, the most used boat to start in the world of sailing individually, given its simplicity, stability and easy handling. The young sailors will fight for victory in a maximum of 6 tests with trapeze-shaped routes and an average duration of about 40 minutes.

In the previous edition of the trophy, held in May 2015, the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Club Marítimo de Canido were the entities with the most sailors on the championship podium.

Santiago Moreno, a 15-year-old yachtsman from Vigo, won the Optimist class, winning three of the five contested races. In the Optimist School class, the gold went to the young sailor from Canido, Carla Estévez, barely 11 years old. And in the Cadet class, the team formed by Fereyot Simón and María Carneiro, aged 16 and 11, students of the regatta team of the Monte Real Club de Yates, won.

All those who want to enjoy the regatta and see the children competing in Baiona will be able to do so from the surroundings of the bay, in places such as the promenade that surrounds the Parador Nacional, América beach or Monte Lourido.
