The Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona is participating these days in Switzerland as a speaker at the 9th ICOYC European and South American Conference, the forum that the members of the prestigious ICOYC (International Council of Yacht Clubs) celebrate biannually in different European countries.
The commodore of the club, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui, and the manager, Tatiana Arias, were in charge of exposing this Thursday to the participants in the event, which is held until Saturday in the Swiss city of Gstaad, the work carried out by Monte Real with the J80 fleet.
They explained how 10 years ago the club decided to bet on this type of 8-meter monodesign, understanding that it was a more economical, safer, fun and technical boat, easier to handle for beginners and ideal for professionals to perfect themselves.
They also told how in a decade of work they managed to considerably increase the number of units, going from zero to more than twenty; Specific competitions were created for the J80 and their own categories for this fleet were included in the club’s most important trophies.
And they ended by narrating how the initiatives put in place and the great evolution registered allowed them to organize, in recent years, two Spanish Championships of the class; and to be chosen, in this 2023, to celebrate the J80 World Championship, becoming the first club in Galicia to achieve this milestone.
Another of the topics addressed at this biannual congress was the Club’s Adapted Sailing School, in which people with disabilities sail throughout the year in adapted boats and with specialized trainers.
9The ICOYC (International Council of Yacht Clubs) is an association that brings together the 45 main yacht clubs in the world with the aim of promoting sailing and improving the organization of activities and events. It includes, among others, the San Diego Yacht Club (USA), the Clube Naval de Cascais (Portugal), the Societe Nautique de Marseille (France), the Royal Yhames Yacht Club (London), the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (New Zealand), the Royal Natal Yacht Club (South Africa) or the Royal Canadian Yacht Club (Canada).
The Monte Real Club de Yates managed to be accepted into the ICOYC in 2021 and since then has been chosen twice as a speaker at the biannual congresses.
· The Galician J80 fleet will face each other again in Baiona after a lackluster first day in which only one test could be held
· Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto leads the classification followed by Castor Alonso’s Maija and Marga Cameselle’s Miudo
· The Portuguese Marías de Manel Cunha will try to get back on the provisional podium after having lost third position due to a penalty
The Galician J80 fleet that is taking part in the Baitra Winter League returns to the water this Saturday for the second round of a competition in which 26 sailboats from different parts of the community and also from the north of Portugal participate.
After a first day tarnished by the wind, in which only one test could be held, the crews aspire to be able to complete several more tasks and begin to move a classification led by Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto, which this Friday will receive at the Gala de la Vela Gallega the award for Best J80 of the year after his victory in the 2022 Spanish Championship.
They are followed in the ranking by Maija de Castor Alonso, a regular in this type of league organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates, and Miudo headed by the board of directors of the Baionese club Marga Cameselle, which made its debut in the competition a fortnight ago with a very good performance.
The Portuguese Marías, led by Manel Cunha, will try to get back on the provisional podium after having fallen from third to fifth position due to a penalty, for not showing up for the weigh-in control that the committee carried out once the first test was over.
For their part, the members of the committee aspire to be able to put into play the trapezoid-shaped routes that they failed to design on the opening day, in which the wind was not strong enough for this type of route.
For this second round, which will begin at two in the afternoon in the Vigo estuary, the weather forecasts announce a lot of clouds, some rain and neither the direction nor the intensity with which the wind will blow has yet to be clearly defined.

In recent days, Tatiana Arias, a multilingual Mexican expert in business management, public relations and international markets, has joined the club as the new General Manager .
Resident in Galicia for many years, she has a degree in International Commerce, a Master’s in International Business, a Master’s in Commerce and Sales; and has extensive experience and experience, of more than 20 years, in different international companies.
Since this month of February, she is also the new manager of the Monte Real Club de Yates. Welcome!
· The crew led by Juan Carlos Ameneiro and current Spanish champion of the class finished first in the opening of the J80 winter championship
· The increase in sailboats in the competition, the continuous improvements of the fleet and the incorporation of outstanding sailors increased the excitement on the water
· The wind was the one that least wanted it this Saturday in the Vigo estuary since it was very shifty and the few times it struck it blew with little intensity
El Alboroto was the leader this Saturday of the Baitra J80 Winter League, which premiered in the Vigo estuary with the participation of 26 armed sailboats manned by sailors from numerous points in Galicia, Asturias, Madrid and Portugal.
The team, led by Juan Carlos Ameneiro and current champion of Spain in the class, was victorious in the only test that could be held on a day of regattas marred by the wind, which was very shifty and the few times it started, it blew with little intensity.
It did not allow the regatta committee to put into play the three tests it had planned, nor did it set up a trapezoid-shaped field, which was one of the objectives of the day to offer the fleet the possibility of training the type of route to which, Predictably, they will face each other in the World Cup in September.
The sports director of the Monte Real Club de Yates, Roy Alonso, explained at the end of the regatta day that “To ride this type of layout, the wind needs to be level and this day it was not achieved. Need Alonso said. that the wind is stable in much more area than what is needed for the poles, and that is why on this day, with these conditions, we opted for this model. But the objective is still to find that trapeze so that they can train for the world championship ”.
In the only race held in the Carallones area, Maija, Alboroto and Marías were the three outstanding boats, and not only for finishing on the provisional podium, but for their great performance during the race. El Maija, with Castor Alonso at the controls, made a very good start and kept up the fight until the end, although first place escaped him at the hands of Alboroto.
Those of Ameneiro, despite not starting in such a good position, were able to come back along the route and cross the finish line, leaving the rest of the fleet behind them, with which they will arrive at the head of the classification to the next day, scheduled for the 25th.
Another of the teams that staged a great comeback was the Portuguese Marías, led by Manel Cunha. The Portuguese crew saw almost a third of the fleet pass ahead during the first part of the tour, but in the second part they reminded the rest why they are one of the contenders for the title, passing almost all of them and finishing the test in third position.
The problem came to Marías when, once on land, the committee proceeded to weigh-in the crews and the team did not show up, with which the boat was penalized with two points, falling from third to fifth position.
And the Miudo rose from fourth to third place, in which two great sailors in Galicia made their debut in the league, Marga Cameselle and Víctor Mariño. Despite not being regulars in J80 competitions, both proved their worth and warned that they will fight in the coming days.
Before sending the fleet back to land and putting an end to the day, the race committee tried to start a second test but the wind did its thing again, with which the classification of the opening day was closed with a single score.

The Monte Real Club de Yates opens its 2023 sports calendar this Saturday with the Baitra J80 Winter League that will be held in 6 days until next May thanks to the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales
The Galician J80 fleet opens with this competition a year of racing that will be the protagonist with the celebration of the World Class Championship next September in Baiona
Among the novelties of this year: new schedules, new routes to train for the World Cup and the incorporation of prominent sailors such as Víctor Mariño, Alberto Viejo or Marga Cameselle, among others.
The one-design league is the first event in a sports calendar in which Monte Real once again includes its two great classics, the Prince of Asturias Trophy and the Conde de Gondomar Trophy
The Monte Real Club de Yates opens its 2023 sports calendar this Saturday in Baiona with the celebration of the first day of the Baitra J80 Winter League, which will be played in 6 stages until next May thanks to the sponsorship of Baitra Accesorios Navales .
In addition to this Saturday, there will be tests on February 25, March 11, 25 and 26 and May 27. Three regattas per day are scheduled, so that, if conditions permit and everything goes according to plan, the one-design fleet will compete in a total of 18 sleeves.
This year, the competition, which includes prominent sailors such as Víctor Mariño, Alberto Viejo or Marga Cameselle, among others; includes a couple of new features. The first is that the start time of the different phases is brought forward, which goes from three in the afternoon to two, with the aim of being able to take more advantage of the daylight time and not have the deadline time for the end of the tests, set to one hour before sunset.
The second novelty is that the usual double routes between buoys of the windward-leeward type are changed to layouts in the shape of an Olympic trapeze, a layout that will possibly be chosen for the world championships in September. What is sought with this change is that the fleet, which already knows the regatta field and the conditions of the Galician estuaries well, can now also get used to the type of World Cup route.
And it is that one of the aspirations of Monte Real as the organizing club of the world championship is that one of the more than 25 sailboats that will participate in the J80 winter league manages to sneak into the podium of the World Cup event, scheduled between the 18th and 24th of September.
Until then, many months ahead in which to train, not only in this competition but also in the rest of the trophies scheduled by the Bayonés club for this 2023, among which are its two great classics, the Conde de Gondomar Trophy (from July 22 to 25) and the Prince of Asturias Trophy (September 1 to 3), in which the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards will be presented again (September 2).
Before them will come the CdeC Trophy (April 22), the Repsol Trophy (April 29 – May 1), the Galician A Dos Championship – MRW Trophy (June 10) and then the J80 Autumn League (October 14 – December 16). There will also be room for non-competitive regattas, such as the III Ruta Rías Baixas (July 3-8), which was so well received in its first two calls.

· Authorities of the Xunta de Galicia and directors of the Monte Real Club de Yates presented this Friday at FITUR the WORLD CUP J80 BAIONA 2023
· After passing through Denmark (2021) and the United States (2022), the J80 world championship arrives in Spain to be held for the first time in Galicia
· Scheduled for the week of September 18 to 24, it will be one of the most important nautical events to be held throughout this year
· The best J80 sailors in the world will compete in this great international event in 80 sailboats coming from different countries of the 5 continents
This Friday the most important nautical event to be held in Galicia and one of the most important in Spain throughout this year was presented at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR): the MUNDIAL J80 BAIONA 2023.
Under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates, the Galician Rías Baixas will bring together, from September 18 to 24, the best J80 sailors in the world, who will compete in this great international event in 80 sailboats from different countries of the 5 continents .
After passing through Denmark (2021) and the United States (2022), this will be the first time that the world championship of the class will come to Galicia, a community that has been betting on these one-designs for years, with one of the most important fleets of Spain.
In the presentation of the event, the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez, said he felt a mixture of pride and responsibility after having been chosen to organize “such a prestigious event, which will put the focus of the sailing world in Galicia he said . “We will once again demonstrate our club’s ability to organize major events and Galicia’s potential to host top-level sports competitions, offering visitors a unique environment,” he assured.
The second vice president of the Xunta de Galicia, Diego Calvo, highlighted in his speech the importance of Galicia having this competition for the first time. “Baiona will become the world epicenter of sailing next September and we will have a unique opportunity to project tourism in the community and the capacity of Galicia to host top-level sporting events,” said Diego Calvo. With regard to nautical tourism, he valued “the unbeatable conditions for navigation and to have competitions like this world championship” .
The tourist promotion of Galicia that will be carried out to the whole world through this event together with the deseasonalization of tourism and boosting the economy of the area were some of the aspects in which the Director of Tourism of Galicia, Nava Castro, had an impact. when talking about the J80 World Cup that will be held in Baiona.
“Our community is closely linked to the world of sailing, since we have been holding numerous competitions for many years, so holding a World Cup in our waters is the culmination of all the efforts made by both the Galician government and the yacht clubs. and the different actors in the sector”concluded Nava Castro.
The J80 Baiona 2023 World Cup arrives at the Monte Real Club de Yates just one year after hosting the prestigious 52 SUPER SERIES. “Despite the notable differences between one fleet and the other, and one competition and the other, there are several links between the two that we particularly like -says the MRCYB commodore, Ignacio Sánchez Otaegui-, and it is that they are one-designs that compete in real time and with short and intense tracks, in which the tests acquire great emotion and are disputed with great rivalry. The show is guaranteed”.
This morning’s staging at the Galicia FITUR stand included the projection of a promotional video for the event and the announcement of the launch of the specific website for the World Cup:
It was the starting signal for an appointment that will be presented shortly at the Monte Real Club de Yates, in a call in which all the details of this great nautical event will be announced.
In addition to the vice president of the Xunta de Galicia and the director of Tourism of Galicia, who took part in the presentation, numerous authorities were present at the event such as the mayor of Baiona, Carlos Gómez; and some athletes also attended, such as the Spanish champion of the J80 class, Javier Aguado.

Dear friends and friends, In the next few days the current year will end, and for this reason I wish to convey to you on behalf of the Board of Directors and all the Club’s workers, our best wishes for these Christmas days and next year 2023.
It has been a year with an extraordinary sporting activity that those of us who practice the sport of sailing have enjoyed. In addition to our complete regatta calendar, we managed to bring the third most important competition in the world to Galicia for the first time, the SUPER SERIES, an event that once again positioned MRCYB on international circuits. We also organize, at the proposal of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, three Spanish championships: one complete and two finals.
The good work and professionalism of the entire MRCYB team also made it possible for us to organize the J80 class World Championship in 2023, one more reason to feel proud and grateful to those who have worked hard to achieve it.
As the Board of Directors, I would also like to express our gratitude to the institutional and private sponsors for their commitment to the MRCYB. And to the media that, with their collaboration, allow our sailing sport to reach society with greater amplitude.
And finally, as always, the most endearing memory for those who have left us and for their families. They will always be part of our memory.
· The J80 led by Juan Carlos Ameneiro managed to climb to the top of the Monte Real Club de Yates one-design league podium this Saturday, which has been taking place in Baiona since last October
This victory is the perfect finishing touch for the crew to a spectacular season in which they became Spanish J80 Champions and managed to win the Conde de Gondomar, Repsol and Comunica trophies
· The sights of the crew that under the leadership of Ameneiro complete Javier Aguado, Javier Lago and Juan Lago are already set on the J80 World Championship to be held next year in Baiona
· Bruno Gago’s Solventis Ribadeo and Chisco Catalán’s Bica won the silver and bronze medals of the Gestilar J80 Autumn League with which the MRCYB closes its 2022 sports calendar
Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto won this Saturday the Gestilar J80 Autumn League that had been taking place since last October in Baiona Bay under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates.
He did it, moreover, forcefully, achieving two victories in the two tests held and being, once again, the best of the stage, something he had already achieved in four of the five days that included the one-design group, having only escaped the triumph of the third phase at the hands of Solventis Ribadeo.
The team that under the leadership of Ameneiro completes Javier Aguado, Javier Lago and Juan Lago, was undoubtedly the best in the championship. He ended up with partial scores of 1-1-1-8-4-2-2-1-1 and 21 points in the final standings; and received his award from the delegate of Gestilar in Galicia, Alfonso López; and the president of the Monte Real Club de Yates, José Luis Álvarez.
The award was the perfect finishing touch to a spectacular season. El Alboroto began 2022 with the disappointment that the Winter League escaped them at the hands of Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen, but from second position, he made it very clear that this season he was going to wage war in the water. And so he did.
In April they won the Comunica Trophy, in May the Repsol Trophy, and in July the Conde de Gondomar Trophy. They were the appetizers of one of the key calls of the season for the J80 fleet, the Spanish Championship, in which they had all their sights set. They went all out and did not disappoint, becoming national class champions.
Now, with this new victory in the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, the Rampage closes 2022 with a more than positive annual balance. Its leader, Juan Carlos Ameneiro, was very satisfied for having more than met -he said- expectations. “We have been improving month by month and we have also done so within a fleet that is increasingly competitive. The truth is that it has been a very good year and we are very happy with the results”.
El Alboroto says goodbye to the year with the feeling of homework done, but already announces that, after the well-deserved rest from the impasse of the Christmas holidays, he will return with more enthusiasm if possible to the competitions. In their sights they have the great event of the 2023 J80 World Cup, which the Monte Real Club de Yates will organize in September in Baiona. It is the first world championship of the class to be held in Galicia and the Ameneiro crew hopes to achieve a great result.
“We have a very close team -says Ameneiro- with a very firm structure, which we have maintained and will continue to maintain without variations for the World Cup. The hard core is formed and now what interests us is to continue advancing in some aspect in which we can still give more of ourselves, such as sailing in stronger winds”.
Until then, Ameneiro’s men will continue to face off against the large J80 fleet that has been revealed in this latest edition of the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, one of the most competitive in recent years.
After five days and ten events held, and after first place for Alboroto (21 points), the winners’ podium was completed by Solventis Ribadeo led by Bruno Gago, César Conde, Sebastián Hermida and Manuel Javier Álvarez (33 points); and Bica de Chisco Catalán, Laureano and Jaime Wizner and Jesús González-Llanos (48 points). They hung the silver and bronze and received their trophies from the Sports deputy of the Pontevedra Provincial Council, Gorka Gómez; and the Councilor for Sports of Baiona, Andrea Pérez.
Fourth and fifth position went to Nano Yáñez’s Cansino (52 points) and Nicolás Ángel Álvarez’s Pezoas (77 points), the latter being the boat, together with Guillermo Blanco’s I3D Atlántico, in sixth position, the best Results were obtained from those who are not part of the Baiona J80 fleet, since they sail under the pennants of the Redes Maritime Club and the Real Club Náutico de A Coruña respectively.
Among the teams that failed to sneak into the podium or Top 5 positions, the Marías of the Portuguese Manel Cunha deserves special recognition, for which his late entry into the competition (he joined the league months after it started ), weighed him down to ninth position, despite having quasi-perfect partials of 1-1-1-1-2-2 in the tests he played.
Thus, with the closure of the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, the Monte Real Club de Yates also closes its 2022 sports calendar, in which having brought the TP52 SUPER SERIES to Galicia, and celebrated the Championships of España de J80, cruisers and women’s sailing, were some of the most outstanding events, along with the traditional Conde de Gondomar, Príncipe de Asturias (and National Sailing Awards), Comunica and Repsol Trophy, Galician Championship of A Dos and the non-competitive Rías Baixas Route.

· Several unexpected conditions made the third day of the Monte Real one-design championship one of the most exciting so far
· After not having participated in the first two stages, the Marías of the Portuguese Manel Cunha joined the competition this Saturday, beating the rest of the fleet in the two tests held
· An off-line in the second test of the day caused Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto to lose the leadership, which was relegated to second position behind Alberto García’s Solventis Ribadeo
· In addition to the arrival of Marías and the disqualifications for being out of line, the entry into play of a discard further adjusted the table of a league that announces excitement until the end
High tension in the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, with a very close table of results after the celebration, this Saturday in the Rías Baixas, of the penultimate round. Several unexpected conditions made the third of the five stages of the one-design championship organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates one of the most exciting to date.
One of the surprises of the day was given by the Marías of the Portuguese Manel Cunha, who after not having participated in the first two days, made a stellar entry into the competition, winning the two tests held this Saturday. The Portuguese crew was full of victories, but with its scarcity of races disputed it will be difficult to access the podium positions from the 18th position it currently occupies.
Less surprising was the climb to the top of the standings for Solventis Ribadeo, who after his great performance on the previous day with Malalo Bermúdez at the helm, this Saturday, with Alberto García leading the team, managed to maintain his good work and his streak in the results. He signed two second places that allow him to hang, temporarily, the gold of the competition.
Worse luck was experienced by one of the favorites to win the Gestilar J80 Autumn League, Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto. The current champion of Spain in the class made an out of line and lost the lead he had had since the first day, being relegated to second position behind Solventis.
After first place for Solventis with 13 points and second for Alboroto with 15 points, Bica de Chisco Catalán appears in third position with 17 points, which once again changed its crew, this time with Laureano. and Jaime Wizner on board, who were also joined by Jesús González-Llanos.
Fernando Yáñez’s El Cansino, in fourth position, is the boat that has the best chance of fighting for one of the honorary positions in the two days remaining before the end of the league. With two third places in the tests held this Saturday and after eliminating his worst result thanks to discarding, he is left with 22 points, quite close to the first three classified and far from the rest.
Below, a margin of just 5 points, between 32 and 36 points, are grouped by Andrés Gómez’s Waikiki; the Pezoas by Nicolás Ángel Álvarez; the I3D Atlántico by Guillermo Blanco and the Mondo by Bernardo Macedo.
These are the new figures in the boxes of a competition that is getting more and more exciting. The Gestilar J80 Autumn League returns to the waters of Baiona Bay on December 3 to put into play the fourth and penultimate of the five stages that the competition includes in this 2022. Three new tests on the program and three new opportunities for the crews to demonstrate their aspirations towards the achievement of the autumn title.

The J80 that this autumn will be played in the Rías Baixas in the Gestilar League of the Monte Real Club de Yates will live this Saturday a decisive day at the equator crossing of the competition, which will put into play, starting at three in the afternoon, the third of the five stages that make up the one-design championship.
Juan Carlos Ameneiro’s Alboroto and Francisco “Chisco” Catalán’s Bica lead the standings separated by just two points (they have 11 and 13 respectively). A little further down, in a range of seven points, are grouped together by Malalo Bermúdez’s Solventis Ribadeo (19 points), Real Club Náutico de A Coruña’s I3D Atlántico, led by Guillermo Blanco (24 points) and Fernando Yáñez’s Cansino ( 26 points).
Four crews from Baiona and one from A Coruña make up the Top 5 of a league in which 23 boats are playing for the title, most of them belonging to the J80 fleet of the Monte Real Club de Yates, and others from such diverse origins such as the Grupo Bazán Club (Ferrol), the We Do Sailing Club (Porto), the RCN A Coruña, the CN Portonovo or the Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas.
After holding three races on the first day and one on the second, the race committee, headed by Carlos Villar, is confident that they will be able to start three new rounds this Saturday, which would be the fifth, sixth and seventh of the competition. From the sixth, the long-awaited discard will come into play, which allows the crews to eliminate their worst result from the table.
If this happens, the teams that will benefit the most from the discard will be those that remained more or less constant in their positions, making very few mistakes. The clearest case is that of the first two classified: Alboroto and Bica, who finished all the previous tests in first and second position except on one occasion.
Those of Ameneiro arrive at this third stage with almost perfect partials of 1-1-1-8; and the Chisco Catalán crew has 2-2-7-2 on their markers. Both share a very weak result from which they will be able to get rid of in the discard and thus separate themselves from their most direct rivals, who did not manage to be so constant in their positions.
Another of the movements that usually occurs when a discard comes into play is the grouping, in the center of the table, of a good number of boats that are close in scores, offering greater excitement to the competition.
In principle, the weather forecasts for this Saturday are quite propitious, with a southerly component wind that will blow with sufficient intensity to allow the planned events to be held.
