The twenty-ninth edition of the Prince of Asturias Trophy, which is being held these days in Baiona, under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Escuela Naval Militar de Marín, got off to a strong start.
The sailors went out on the water with the intention of giving everything and not even the light and shifting wind, which did not exceed 8 knots, was able to detract from a first day that was experienced with great intensity.
The tests began according to the planned schedule and were carried out without major incidents. It was only necessary to shorten the route of the ORCs at a time when the intensity of the wind began to drop.
In the ORC Class 1 the victory went to Aceites Abril, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, skippered by Luis Pérez Canal. In second and third position were Rui Ramada’s Fifty and a grímpola from MRCYB, and Porto de Aveiro from Club Náutico Bocadabarra, with Delmar Conde at the helm.
The Movistar of the RCN of Sanxenxo, skippered by Pablo Iglesias, firmly prevailed in the ORC 2 Class. He managed to get two minutes out of the second classified, the Solventis of the MRCYB; and four to Bosch Service Solutions of the Canido CM.
In the ORC 3 competition, the podium on this first day was divided between boats from Portosín, Ferrol and Vilagarcía. First place went to La Rabuda Uno, by Fernando González; the second for the GDiez, by José M. Naya; and the third for the Andarivel, by Emilio Patiño.
The J80s that came down to Baiona from A Coruña demonstrated their power among their class, completing a full podium finish. Luis Tourón’s Marina Coruña came first, Manuel Rego’s Biba second and Carlos López’s Miúdo third.
In the Ladies Cup the victory went to the Figaro 2, skippered by the Olympic medalist Sandra Azón, from the Catalan Federation. Amparo Mollá and her girls took second place aboard the Figaro 1, and the third position went to the Figaro 6 of María Campos.
The XXIX Trofeo Príncipe de Asturias continues tomorrow, Saturday, with new tests for the ORCs, J80s and Ladies Cup starting at 11:55. Tomorrow the Classics and Specials will also go out to sea, which will compete from 12:25.
In the afternoon, starting at 8:00 p.m., at the Monte Real Yacht Club in Bayonne, the National Sailing Awards will be presented, which this year will be collected by Movistar, Solventis, Desafío MAPFRE, A Contracorriente Films and Alex Lump.
