The forty-first edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Banco Sabadell Grand Prix is loosened after its official presentation this Tuesday in Baiona. The regatta, held every year without interruption since its creation in 1976, is one of the most emblematic sailing competitions in Galicia.
Organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates with the sponsorship of Banco Sabadell, the 2016 Conde de Gondomar Trophy will be held from July 22 to 25, and will include tests at different points along the Galician coast, from Baiona to Fisterra.
The sports program, explained this morning by the commodore of the Baiona club, Fernándo Yáñez, will begin on Friday with the longest stage of the trophy, in which the sailboats must sail from Baiona to the Carrumeiro Chico lighthouse, in the Corcubión estuary , to turn it around and return to Baiona again. Almost 100 miles of travel reserved for the largest ships, ORC classes 0, 1, 2 and 3.
On Sunday, July 24, they will be joined by the ORC 4, and the one designs J80 and Fígaros. While the former compete in a 40-mile cross-country race around the Cíes and Ons archipelagos, a coastal regatta is scheduled for the rest.
The Banco Sabadell Grand Prix will end on Monday, July 25, the Santiago Apostol holiday, with several windward-leeward races in the Bay of Baiona starting at noon, and in the afternoon, prize giving to the winners at the Monte Real Club de yachts.
In the official presentation held this morning in Baiona, the president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez, thanked Banco Sabadell for its support in making this new edition of the competition possible, he said, for “Support the sport of sailing in general and one of our most beloved trophies in particular ”, he assured.
Next, on behalf of Banco Sabadell, Manuel Prol, Director of Institutional Relations of SabadellGallego, intervened, who expressed the wish of the entity to “being present in the lives of Galicians through sponsorships and collaborations that help make it even more visible -he said- initiatives as important and established in the sports calendar as the Conde de Gondomar Trophy”. For Banco Sabadell, he continued, “Sport is an important form of contribution to society, since through it values of respect, solidarity, collaboration, discipline and responsibility are instilled”.
The General Secretary for Sport of the Xunta de Galicia, José Ramón Lete, was another person who participated in the presentation of the regatta, which he defined as one of the most charismatic in Galicia. “That’s why ,” he assured. which has the support of the Xunta, not only because it complies with the sporting values of a competition of this type, but also due to environmental and tourist promotion criteria”. In addition to valuing the work of the Monte Real Yacht Club, Lete wanted to thank Banco Sabadell for its support of sailing in Galicia, a sport, he said, that is strategic for a community with more than 1,600 kilometers of coastline, more than 2,000 sailing licenses and 37 high-level athletes, 3 of whom will be present at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The presentation of the forty-first edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Banco Sabadell Grand Prix, held today at the Monte Real Club de Yates, was also attended by the first deputy mayor of Baiona, María Iglesias, and the president of the Galician Federation of Sailing, Manuel Villaverde.
