Complicated day for the second day of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Banco Sabadell Grand Prix, which was held this Sunday in the vicinity of the Cíes and Ons archipelagos. The absence of wind forced the start of the competition to be delayed an hour and a half and to modify the route, which was shortened by about seven miles with respect to what was foreseen in the competition programme.
After half past one in the afternoon, the wind picked up from the northwest, blowing with about 8-9 knots, and the regatta committee was able to start, in front of Cíes, the test of the big boats, of the ORC 1 classes , 2 and 3, which traveled almost 25 miles around Ons.
The Aceites Abril, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo, was the fastest to finish the test, which it completed in less than four hours. Skippered by Luis Pérez Canal, the crew of the Abril leads the ORC 1 class, and after their two victories in the Carrumeiro stage and in this Sunday’s test, they remain in first place in the provisional general classification.
In the ORC 2 class, the Santorum&Martinez Group, led by Javier Durán, from Club de Mar de Vilagarcía, is in the lead; and in ORC 3, Jean Claude Sarrade’s Fend la Bise, wearing a pendant from the Monte Real Club de Yates.
Just 5 minutes after the start of the ORC 1, 2 and 3 competition, the ORC 4 race began, together with the J80 and Figaro monotypes, with a slightly shorter course. They sailed some 22 miles from the starting point, in front of the Cíes, to the Camouco lighthouse, in Ons.
In the ORC 4 class, victory went to Pablo Conde’s Enxuto, from the Real Club de Mar de Aguete, who took four hours and forty minutes to complete the track. In J80, Okofen, by Javier de la Gándara, from the Monte Real Club de Yates, stood out; and in the Figaro class the victory went to Serralleiras, also from Monte Real, skippered by Víctor Calviño.
The podium of the 41st Conde de Gondomar Trophy will be decided tomorrow
After the long stage last Friday and the regattas this Sunday, the forty-first edition of the Conde de Gondomar Trophy – Banco Sabadell Grand Prix will be decided tomorrow, Monday, with the last races of the competition.
Starting at noon, at the anchorage of the Cíes Islands, the registered crews will dispute several windward-leeward routes that will determine the positions of honor of the regatta.
In the afternoon, starting at six o’clock, the award ceremony for the winners will be held at the Monte Real Club de Yates facilities, in an act in which several representatives of Banco Sabadell, sponsor of the competition, will be present.
