· Three first places in the three races held this afternoon in the bay of Baiona gave victory to the boat skippered by the ocean sailor
Okofen thus leads the J80 Class Winter League of the Monte Real Yacht Club followed by Miguel Lago’s Virazón and Enrique Porto’s Ferralemes
· The one-design competition continues on the 28th of this month of January with the second of the six days scheduled until the end of March
Three victories in the three races held this afternoon in Baiona place Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen in the lead of the J80 Class Winter League, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates in the waters of the Bay of Baiona.
The competition opened today with ideal weather conditions, wrapped in a sunny and very cold day, but with good wind for the sailboats, since, with few exceptions, it blew above ten knots practically at all times.
At three in the afternoon, punctual according to the scheduled time, the members of the regatta committee started the first of the tests. The ten participating sailboats, all from the J80 class, had to complete a windward-leeward double loop course, which also included an offset. Almost three miles of distance per task that would give the crews enough margin to demonstrate their good work on the water.
And that was precisely what Javier de la Gándara’s Okofen did. The sailboat skippered by the historic ocean sailor and crewed by his son Jaime de la Gándara, Diego Fernández and Hugo Ferreiro, managed to overcome a couple of small problems that arose throughout the regatta, and always crossed the finish line first.
On certain occasions, Fernándo Yáñez’s Cansino and Tiago Roquete’s Miudo by Storax managed to overtake him, but Okofen very soon managed to regain their leadership position and take the lead again.
Thus, De la Gándara’s men lead a competition that leaves Miguel Lago’s Virazón with his usual crew, formed by Gerardo Alonso, Juan Lago and Javier Lago, on the second step of the provisional podium. On this first day they achieved three third places and are six points behind the leader.
In third position, three points behind the second and nine behind the first, is Ferralemes, skippered by Enrique Porto, and manned by Damián Puebla, Alberto Martín and Roberto Fontán.
Completing the classification after this inaugural stage are Cansino by Fernándo Yáñez, Miudo by Storax by Tiago Roquete, Namasté by Luis de Mira, Pazo de Cea by María Campos, Mondo by Bernardo Macedo, Luna Nueva by Juan Luis Tuero, and Willy Caamaño’s Alumisel.
The J80 Class Winter League will continue on the 28th with the second of the six competition days scheduled until the end of next March.
