Starting tomorrow, the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona is running a new edition of the Repsol Trophy, which this year will also be the J80 Luso Galaica Cup and will be held for three days in the Vigo estuary, with various regattas inside of the Bay of Baiona and the anchorage of the Cíes Islands.

The Baiona club officially presented the competition this morning at a press conference attended by the mayor of Baiona, Ángel Rodal; the person in charge of Marine and Fishing of Repsol, Inés González; and the president and vice president of Monte Real, José Luis Álvarez and Alejandro Retolaza.

The event detailed the characteristics of what is considered one of the most important tests of the heavy sailing season in Galicia, and in which 25 crews from different parts of the country have already announced their participation.

In front of the starting line there will be boats such as the Santorum & Martinez Group of the Club Náutico Deportivo de Riveira, with Javier Durán at the wheel; Jean Claude Sarrade’s Fend la Bise, which will race once again at the Monte Real Club de Yates; Nahela from Club Deportivo Alagua de A Guarda, recent winner of the Comunica Trophy; or the Starfighter by Julio Rodríguez, from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo.

In addition, in 2019 the winners of the previous edition will repeat, which were Ramón Ojea’s Bosch Service Solutions, winner in the cruiser-regatta class and in the general classification; and the Balea Dous de Rodeira, with Luis Pérez at the controls, winner of the cruiser class. Elena Raga, from Madrid, who won the Figaro class in 2018, will also return to Baiona.

In the J80 class, the fleet of boats of the Monte Real Club de Yates will be, once again, the most outstanding, with the presence, among others, of the two monotypes that have won the most recent competitions held in Galicia: the Okofen de Javier de la Gándara and El Cansino by Fernando Yáñez.

Five races in three days of racing

The Repsol Trophy of this 2019 includes in its program five tests divided into the three days that the competition will last.

The first day, tomorrow, Wednesday, the May Day holiday, will include a coastal route starting in the interior of the Bay of Baiona and passing in front of different sandy areas to the Tofiño Lighthouse, in the vicinity of the Galician Sea Museum, turning in the area to return back to the interior of the bay, where the finish line will be placed.

The competition will continue on the weekend of Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May, with two stages that, although they will be completely defined based on the day’s weather forecasts, are expected to be a windward/leeward and a coastal route on Saturday , and two windward/leeward runs on Sunday. They will be the definitive tests in which the winners’ podiums will be defined and will be held in the vicinity of the Cíes Islands.

In dispute the J80 Luso Galaica Cup

After having been the Spanish J80 Championship in 2018, the 2019 Repsol Trophy will host the J80 Luso Galaica Cup, in which the different J80 participants will measure their strength. The cup will have as its program the same tests planned for the rest of the fleet, including two coastal tours of the Vigo estuary and several poles at the Cíes anchorage. The difference with the cruisers will be that, as usual, the J80, identical to each other, will compete in real time.
